Push Rods teamed up with the 7th Street's showing of American Graffiti on June 20. We had 350 attend Saturday's screening, and 35 Push Rods lined the street in front of the theatre. Johnny Ray performed from the bed of a '49 Chev flatbed. Good times! You can see pictures on our Picasa album.

The blower in the attic

Here's a picture of the original blower that circulated the heat through the theatre in its early days. It was reported in the local newspaper that air completely circulated every three minutes.

Preservation training and analysis

Jeff Greene of EverGreene Architectural Arts spent the day with some of the 7th Street volunteers on Sunday. Jeff was hired by the theatre to perform a survey of the theatre's historic finishes, provide input on preservaton and restoration of the historic murals discovered in November, and answer some questions about cleaning and restoration by volunteers. It was a wonderfully informative day. Jeff discovered that the front of the marquee (see picture) was created using a technique called scraffito, which is done by layering tinted plaster, and scraping away the top layer to expose the differently colored layer beneath. He found that one of the original colors was an intense blue. Unfortunately, we could not find a ladder truck to lift him up to the front wall niches to take samples.

Former projectionist photos

Here are some great photos we received from Ross Munro, who worked in the theatre in the early 1980s. The photos were taken in 1980, and he is in one of the pictures. He started out at the D&R, and then came to the 7th Street. One of these projectors is in the lobby --- they are the original E7 carbon arc projectors. Ross was projectionist and also theatre manager during this time. Ross, married with three beautiful kids, lives in North Carolina and is a Master Chief (SEAL) and has been in the Navy for 26 years. Thank you Ross!

Bike winner!

Here's 11-year-old Angelique, who won the bike Saturday night at our raffle. This awesome bike was refurbished by Stafford Creek Correctional Industries, who donated this along with two hand-made birdhouses and a crocheted afghan for our raffle. Congratulations Angelique!

Cool Hand Luke movie night

Things have been pretty crazy here at the 7th Street Theatre, and I decided we needed to have something new on our blog. This is a shot I took last night while Cool Hand Luke was playing. It's a nice thing to see this activity taking place again around downtown Hoquiam. There have been events every week since we reopened on January 25th after being closed for four months for renovations.

Some Like it Hot

Some Like it Hot, screened on Valentine's Day weekend this year, had a special opportunity to get your picture taken with Marilyn. The theatre volunteers are proud that our own Jamie is a Marilyn look-alike, and here she is with her sweetie, Joe (right).
The photo on the left shows faithful popcorn fans waiting for that perfect popcorn with REAL butter that can only be found at the 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam.

Reopening celebration

On January 25, 2009, our reopening celebration brought in over 500 people to see all the newly restored seats, backstage rigging and the curtains and to hear the Aberdeen Elks National Band and Dukes of Swing perform for this event. The rigging project is almost done! Just yesterday the "grand valance" and drapes were hung. This photo was taken before the drapes were installed, but I just needed to share this picture. We chose a drape design as close to the originals as possible. Having only black and white photos put a damper on the color scheme, but we are extremely pleased with the dark blue fabric. Boxes and boxes

This is the second (and last) pile of boxes -- we've already recycled one batch. Terri is unloading one of the last boxes of cushions. We're 90% done with this project thanks to the help of numerous volunteers.

Very old ticket stubs found

These ticket stubs were found during seat installation. We found some during the seat removal, which makes sense, but it's a mystery how these came to be found. After the seats were removed the entire seating area was cleaned, mopped, vacuumed and scrubbed, and then these just appeared last weekend. Through a little research on the Jones Photo Collection website we found that in 1947 Adult admission was 59 cents, Loge Seating - 70, students - 40 and children - 15. These must be from sometime between the time the theatre opened (1928) and the early 30's.

Seat installation begins

The seat installation is going amazingly well, considering there were about 450 seats delivered on Wednesday and about 40 boxes unloaded this weekend. About 10 people showed up over the weekend to help out. Work parties are scheduled at 9am from Wednesday January 7th through Sunday January 10th (or until they're done). The first shipment of seats has arrived!

The first shipment of seats were delivered by Washington Correctional Industries on December 31st. For those newbies -- these are the original seats, restored. I'm beyond excited to see these installed and offering patrons a comfortable place to sit. Wow. The big question is: "who is the mystery person in the yellow coat?" Interested in helping? Contact Lane Youmans -- we're starting installation the weekend of January 3rd.

Stage rigging pulleys & lines in place

Here are some shots of the rigging pulleys mounted on the west wall of the stage area. This will be so wonderful for our stage hands! You can see the original pinrail set still in place -- we kept it for historical purposes.

The armrests are back!

Here's a picture of the newly refinished armrests recently picked up from the Dept. of Corrections. Nice, aren't they!!!
We'll soon be getting the restored cushions and seat backs in two separate shipments and volunteers will begin installation soon thereafter. Interested in helping with this? Email Lane Youmans, and he'll get you on the list.

Fly floor grating

One of our brave board members (Lane), along with his trusty Kodak, headed up to the top-most newly constructed floor-- the fly floor. This is right up there at the top of the fly loft. Rognlin's installed this new metal grating over the top of the original wooden floor. One very cool thing is that there are now lights up here. I can't even imagine climbing up to the top of the flyloft with the old ladder and then on the old wooden boards as they "bent" while walking on them -- only to top it off with having to carry a flashlight. (shudder)
