This Spring, I had a lot of fun transcribing it into a 2-minute orchestral piece. I bought the CD Van Halen, along with the transcriptions Van Halen Best Of, Volume I (Best of Van Halen). After analyzing the piece, I wrote the arrangement while paying a special attention to the orchestral playability. That's why I used very different time signatures than the ones in the guitar transcription book aforementioned.

An Orchestration Course at Harvard

This was my final project for a great orchestration class that I took this spring in the Music Department. Michael Gandolfi, Chair of the composition department at New England Conservatory, was teaching it as a special guest. With five other composers, we were lucky to study with this artist, very experienced and so enthusiastic with the orchestra as an instrument.

Michael Gandolfi and the Harvard Music Department invited BMOP, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, to read our final projects. Conductor Gil Rose and all the musicians did an awesome job.

I signed an agreement to not publish the recording, but I hope I will have the opportunity to share this music in the future. Indeed, this orchestral miniature may become an interlude of a larger piece mixing electric guitar and orchestra. I will have to get Eddie Van Halen's authorization in the first place, of course.

Jean-François Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02759320517868769672jf@jeanfrancoischarles.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307206084206274469.post-66460313217303931382009-05-24T07:05:00.001-04:002009-05-24T07:09:59.431-04:0001-05/60 - Live Saturation video starring Mario Caroli
One year after the premiere concert, here is the video of Live Saturation:

Live Saturation
for flute and electronic music
with Ruth Lepson's poetry

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 65px; height: 30px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SSYO-CqEejI/AAAAAAAAAg0/og2lau7Upms/s200/French.gif" border="0" alt="Version Francaise"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270916872911747634" /> This is the live recording of Mario Caroli's Harvard recital, that took place on May 24th, 2008, to the invitation of the Harvard Group for New Music.

Mario Caroli plays Ivan Fedele

I studied under Maestro Ivan Fedele during several years at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg. Mario Caroli is one of the best interprets of his music. For our 2004 tour “Spirales”, I composed Aqua for double bass solo, aquaphone, clarinet, and live electronics. The piece was played by the Ensemble New Flore in Strasbourg, Bouxwiller, and Geneva, and by the Ensemble de Musique Interactive in Montbéliard, and at the French Institute in Florence (see pictures of this performance, with the aquaphone, on http://www.flickr.com/jfcharles ). Aqua Solo is a set of two pieces for solo double bass. The first part, Prelude, is played arco, and reminds us that the double bass is a descendant of the viol. The second part is a Blues, played pizzicato.
During the coming months, I intend to turn it into Aqua Duo, a work for double bass solo accompanied by clarinet and live electronics.
Aqua is the fourth part of the Arc-en-ciel. After the concert, the conductor Theodore Antoniou invited all the composers to dinner. That was great to spend some time with this authentic music lover.

Gunther Schuller was excited about the piece and about the soloist Alan Lenarcic's playing. The first thing he told me was: "C'est une vraie composition du Troisième Courant!" ("It's a true Third Stream composition!") Then, he talked a lot with Alan about improvisation and saxophone players. Notably, he defended Charlie Parker's album Charlie Parker with Strings (result: I just ordered the CD).

Thank you Alan Lenarcic, Gunther Schuller, and Theodore Antoniou, for your enthusiasm for music!

Jean-François Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02759320517868769672jf@jeanfrancoischarles.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307206084206274469.post-63309582058084489692009-03-19T14:19:00.001-04:002009-03-19T14:21:41.226-04:00Viola palustris - Premiere with Alea III<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 280px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/ScJwejeD8-I/AAAAAAAAAj4/sC1kcZgexXc/s400/08-09-ALEA-poster.jpg" border="0" alt="Alea III 2008 2009 poster"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5314934180470322146" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 65px; height: 30px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SSYO-CqEejI/AAAAAAAAAg0/og2lau7Upms/s200/French.gif" border="0" alt="Version Francaise"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270916872911747634" />I'm happy to invite you to the premiere of Viola palustris, my most recent composition. Here they are:

Viola palustris was inspired by the Alpine Marsh Violet, a perennial forb of the genus Viola. This flower inhabits moist meadows and marshes. It is the feast of the Fritillary butterfly.
Viola palustris is a concerto for an improviser with a 14-instrument ensemble. Tonight's performance features Alan Lenarcic on tenor saxophone. I have played with Alan for several projects, including a live performance of a 70-minute score to the movie "The Man with the Movie Camera". For my part, I composed Lapalu, a new work for viola and live electronics. Last Saturday, I wrote program notes.

Program notes

Lapalu, for viola and live electronics, with interactive video art by Ean White

Lapalu was inspired by the Alpine Marsh Violet, a perennial forb of the genus Viola. This flower inhabits moist meadows and marshes. It is the feast of the Fritillary butterfly.
Lapalu is a chamber music work for Viola, Live Electronics, and Interactive Video Art. It has taken its present form after a fertile improvisation session with Garth Knox on October 13th, 2008, and several meetings with Ean White in the Fall. The interaction with both artists incited me to leave much freedom in the parts. I am glad that the work benefits from their talents for creation and improvisation.
Lapalu is based on a simple musical formula. To see sketches and excerpts from the score, visit my blog www.jeanfrancoischarles.com
Lapalu’s sister work is Viola palustris, a flugelhorn concerto. Alea III, a 15-instrument ensemble, will premiere the piece in the Tsai Performance Center, in Boston, on Monday, March 23rd.
Make sure you visit Ean White’s web site: www.incendiaryarts.org

Update

Feb. 12th. Well, the video won't be part of this first performance. But Ean and I will work on making that happen for another version of the piece. I'll let you know...

Jean-François Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02759320517868769672jf@jeanfrancoischarles.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4307206084206274469.post-46188393264807619642009-02-04T16:25:00.001-05:002009-02-04T16:26:16.880-05:00David Fiuczynski at Harvard<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 65px; height: 30px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SSYO-CqEejI/AAAAAAAAAg0/og2lau7Upms/s200/French.gif" border="0" alt="Version Francaise"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5270916872911747634" />
I am thrilled to announce that the next guest of the Harvard Group for New Music Colloquium Series is Dave Fiuczynski. He is not only a virtuoso guitar player, but also a professor, a composer, a producer, and more.

I wanted him to be invited because he is a true creator of new music. He has been playing fretless and microtonal guitars for years. More importantly, he has incorporated microtonality in a contemporary music context, both in melodic and harmonic ways. For instance, listen to Moonring Bacchanal on this page: KiF Express. I strongly encourage you to listen to his most recent album, Kif Express on amazon. It is called 6-melody-to-harmony and free to download on this page: Jean-François Charles' Max MSP Jitter patches.

A multiple freeze

With this patch, you can freeze a note, then add other notes, thus creating a frozen chord. There is no limit on the number of notes that you can freeze: it doesn't take more resources to freeze 100 notes than 2. By freezing successive notes of a melody, you transform it into harmony, in real time.
This patch uses the Max MSP FFT capabilities, while spectral data is stored and computed within Jitter matrices.

Max 4 version of the patch?

Antonio commented "pity some patches are for version 5 only" ; that's right, some of the most recent patches are only compatible with Max 5 and later. For this "melody to harmony" patch, you can click and enlarge the picture below. You will see the whole patch and the [pfft~] sub-patch. You can make a new Max 4 patch by patching the objects you see in the image. All are standard objects are available in Max/MSP 4.6 and Jitter. Nothing is hidden. The black rectangles are [jit.pwindow] objects.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 156px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SVbk7OiZhVI/AAAAAAAAAhE/QnGEPzASzKo/s400/6-melody-to-harmony.jpg" border="0" alt="Max MSP Jitter patch melody to harmony FFT"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5284662918931645778" />
This is the Max 5 version. In the duet Play Along 3, I use the most common root pitch for split tones on the Bb clarinet: the lowest note of the instrument, a written E. The first time I played this particular multiphonic in concert was during the première of Javier Torres Maldonado's great piece Hemisferios Artificiales.
We created this work for flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, and violoncello in February 2002 in Strasbourg. Ivan Fedele was the composition professor, and Armand Angster was leading the rehearsals. First, I had a hard time figuring out how to play this multiphonic sound, but in the end, the concert was great.

One breath

If you use this study in your teaching, it may be fun to play it in one breath. In this composition, I used the musical formula technique.

Lapalu musical formula

Here is the manuscript of the Lapalu formula. You can read the four limbs of the formula, each inhabited by a particular musical character. I composed part of this formula after recording Garth Knox. I could then incorporate elements of his musical language. For instance, he ended the improvisation session with circular bowing, that he seemed to enjoy quite a lot: this is why I use this nice sound quality in the last bar.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 173px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SXATfgy_aqI/AAAAAAAAAhM/AqCJu_FVmqc/s400/1-lapalu-formula-manus.jpg" border="0" alt="Lapalu musical formula score"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291750994261011106" />

First projection of the formula

On the next picture, you can see the how the Lapalu formula unfolds over the first section of the piece. In formula composition, musical material is not developed, but rather spread, unfolded. Each limb of the formula contaminates its character to the corresponding section. Each section contains one or more projection of the whole formula. Here, the first projection (first half of the "red" section) is not transposed, the subsequent ones are transposed.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 274px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SXATqI-zx8I/AAAAAAAAAhU/btp0z3_ptBQ/s400/2-lapalu-formula-unfolding.jpg" border="0" alt="Lapalu formula unfolding projection"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291751176846690242" />

The formula as a model for the large-scale form

At a larger scale, the formula is projected over several minutes. The "bend note" becomes a "Fall" section, that happens to be a "live electronics" solo.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 212px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SXAT6rUbUWI/AAAAAAAAAhc/7GhpqUqFWZs/s400/3-lapalu-formula-form.jpg" border="0" alt="Lapalu formula composition large-scale form"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291751460942074210" />

Melody and harmony

In Lapalu, the harmony is directly derived from the melody. Or was the formula composed after the harmonic progression?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 215px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9MIKk1_hhYQ/SXAUFGlMVgI/AAAAAAAAAhk/F5SdUW7jCko/s400/4-lapalu-melody-harmony.jpg" border="0" alt="Lapalu melodic formula harmonic progression"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5291751640058844674" />

For more insight into formula composition, I recommend reading Karlheinz Stockhausen's presentation and analysis of his own music, for instance his Texte zur Musik, volume 5. And you may become convinced that Formula composition is just another version of total serialism.

Jean-François Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02759320517868769672jf@jeanfrancoischarles.com0
