LAUGHTER greeted Peter Darby of the EDD Youth Employment Opportunity Program as he role-played in a mock interview workshop.

Fifteen eager job seekers learned how NOT to interview for a job. Darby, dressed in baggy shorts, a garish T-shirt, and dark sunglasses, came across as smug and arrogant. And he slouched in his chair in front of mock interviewers, Danise Gabriel and Lupe Bagley, EDD youth mentors.

Although the mock interview was humorous, Darby believed it drove home some important points: Be prepared and know how to conduct yourself in an interview.

Bagley agreed. Research the company, arrive 15 minutes early, bring a pen, and be aware that all eyes of the company follow your every move.

"The receptionist might be asked to watch and observe you, and take notes for the person conducting the interview," she said.

How Teens Make Money Selling Jewelry

Making things is only half the battle. Creativity in itself doesn't guarantee something will automatically "sell".

Selling what you make is the other half of the battle. But it's so important that, depending on the product, the sales person or sales and marketing channel may make most of the money from the transaction.

Selling also tells you what to make and what price to charge. So when the manufacturer and sales person are the same person, selling also provides valuable market intelligence.

Usually though the best creators are not the best marketers and a third person is needed to keep the books!

Flora Newton, 6, of the New Hope 4-H Club, was making jewelry and displaying it on a stand on top of her table.

Newton, a seasoned salesperson who has sold jewelry at Wells Elementary School where she attends classes, said business was pretty good Saturday.

"My mother is a jewelry maker, and it made me want to do it," Newton said.

Her mother, Julia, said the extravaganza was a good chance for her daughter and the other youths to learn about business and to show people how jewelry was made.

At a nearby booth, Anna Sullivan and her sister Grace were selling their handmade earrings and necklaces.

"This has been good," Anna said. "Better than I expected."

Her mother, Betsy, agreed.

"I think it is a good opportunity for them," she said. "It shows them the ups and downs of the business world."

20-year-old Phillip Tapia is the Founder and President of a new & unique company he calls, Tray Display Advertising Inc. This young man has transformed an ordinary 8 ½” x 11” regular piece of white paper and turned it into a full time business.
Phillip Tapia launched Tray Display Advertising Inc. into a business in 2004 from the basement of his home. Tapia designed and developed a new advertising concept that turned trash into cash. Tapia has agreed to sell advertising space on the tray liners (placemats) , that Wendy’s use to serve all dine-in customers.
Tapia prints hundreds of thousands of Wendy’s tray liners every month and for 15 to 30 minutes, while customers enjoy their meal, Tray Display Advertising goes to work. Beginning in May 2006, Tapia will begin Pizza Box Topper advertising by using Colorado Springs Little Caesars pizza boxes as a promotional vehicle to get an advertising message into homes and offices throughout the city.
