Boss Signs with Red Bulls

Boss Signs With MLS2008 USL-2 Keeper of the Year Signed by New York Red Bulls segments courtesy of New York Red Bull Media Relations: Secaucus, NJ - Red Bull New York has announced that it has signed goalkeeper Terry Boss to a senior contract. Per club and MLS regulations, specific terms of the deal were not disclosed. The 2008 USL-2 Goalkeeper of the Year helped the Charlotte Eagles claim the USL-2 Regular Season Title and to the Championship match where Charlotte was upset by Cleveland 2-1 in August. Boss was unable to play in the match due to a red card suspension. "Terry has been training with us over the past few weeks and we were impressed with what he brings to the table," said Sporting Director Jeff Agoos. "We want to take the remainder of the season to evaluate him as an option for next year." Boss could see his first action as a Red Bull as soon as September 18th when the Red Bulls take on the league leading Columbus Crew. While in Charlotte, Boss was not only known for his skills as a goalkeeper but also for his unmatched work-ethic and commitment to excellence on and off the field. They are traits that will undoubtedly be an advantage for him during his time with the Red Bulls. The move to New York also reunites Terry with his younger brother Kevin, a tight-end for the Super Champion New York Giants. The Charlotte Eagles are excited for Terry and the opportunity for another Eagle to play in our country's highest division! Good luck Terry!

Cleveland Wins USL-2 Championship
Stars Defeat Charlotte 2-1 for 1st USL-2 Title

Cleveland, OH - As predicted, the two best defenses in the league kept it a close game in a closely battled contest all the way to the final whistle. In the end, host Cleveland was one goal better. An own goal and a goal from Sallieu Bundu, plus an amazing performance from goalkeeper Eric Reed sealed the championship for Cleveland.

Both teams started attacking from the start in front an inspired crowd of 2,016 at Krenzler Stadium. Charlotte played their familiar style of possession and Jonah Long nearly took advantage of a great ball played back from Jorge Herrera. Long took the 20 yard shot that beat Eric Reed but was cleared off the line by a defender just before it crossed into the goal.

Just minutes later, Cleveland earned a corner kick in the 15th minute. Mark Shulte's dangerous corner was going toward Musa Otieno, and Steve Shak challenged the ball. Unfortunately, the ball deflected off of Shak's face and landed in Charlotte's net. Cleveland was on top 1-0.

Charlotte came right back on a breakaway as Robert Ssejjemba broke into the penalty box. Just as Ssejjemba went to take the shot, he was met with a sliding Jeremy Tolleson. The two collided and the ball deflected out of bounds. Ssejjemba badly hurt his knee on the play and was out of the game for the remainder of the night.

Patrick Daka entered the game for Ssejjemba and immediately let his impact be known on the field. After several fantastic saves by Cleveland's Eric Reed, Charlotte still trailed by a goal. Cleveland would extend their lead in the 39th minute when Sallieu Bundu ran on to a long ball. He was met by Eagles defender Steve Shak who appeared to have the ball in his control. Contact between the two caused Shak to fall as Bundu found himself alone with Eagles keeper Kevin Trapp. Bundu finished the shot to the far corner and the City Stars took a 2-0 lead into halftime.

The second half began with the Eagles bringing constant pressure to the City Stars, but Cleveland's Eric Reed denied the Eagles time and again. The City Stars tried to take advantage of the Eagles pressure through several counter attacks but Eagles keeper Kevin Trapp had several amazing plays that kept his team in the game.

The Eagles finally found the back of the net in the 87th minute when Danny Harvey played a cross to Joseph Kabwe who finished a great volley that beat Reed. The goal was not enough though as time ran out on the Eagles.

The Charlotte Eagles were left to reflect on an outstanding season with many accomplishments despite their loss tonight. Perhaps the most notable accomplishment was voiced through captain Dustin Swinehart following the game. "We are so thankful to be playing this match with a team that we view as our brothers," commented Swinehart to the Cleveland crowd during the ceremony.

Those relationships this weekend was something that the Eagles and City Stars cherished all weekend. It was a weekend where the teams shared chapels together, and remembered the real reason for them to be joyful in the exciting events of the weekend. The teams battled for 90 minutes, but when it was over Cleveland and Charlotte still found themselves embracing each other.

The Charlotte Eagles would like to thank Cleveland for their amazing hospitality and for their passion to team up with the community and serve the city and the USL in the way they do. The Eagles are excited to continue partnering with the City Stars in the future and playing them in the USL!

Top USL-2 Awards Announced

Charlotte's Swinehart Named Most Valuble Player

Tampa, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced the top USL Second Division honors for the 2008 season Friday during the USL-2 Championship luncheon at Cleveland's City Hall, honoring the Rookie of the Year, Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year and Most Valuable Player as voted on by the league's coaches and general managers.

Most Valuable Player - Dustin Swinehart (Charlotte Eagles)

The USL-2 MVP honor may arguably be the most long overdue honor in the league given Dustin Swinehart's 11-year career with the Eagles that includes seven overall All-League honors and numerous seasons among the statistical scoring tables.

The veteran has been overshadowed in recent years by teammate Jacob Coggins, who has captured numerous scoring titles as well as three MVP awards. But perhaps without Swinehart, those accolades would not have been attainable. Even with Coggins' departure to USL-1 Carolina, the Eagles still soared to the regular season title and Swinehart, stepping back into the role as striker, led the way, capturing the Scoring and Goal Scoring Championships with 39 points and 16 goals. He also finished second in assists with seven.

The scoring honors were not his first, having shared the Assist Leader award with Coggins in 2004, but they were slightly unexpected despite his history of finishing among the league leaders because of his previous role at midfield. Being up top for the first time since Charlotte's debut USL-1 campaign in 2001, allowed Swinehart to show that he still had the prowess that led him to second in points (39) and goals (18) that season, finishing behind then MVP Paul Conway.

Swinehart had made his debut in the top 10 in scoring the year before en route to the club's first USL-2 title, finishing tied for fourth in points, sixth in goals and fifth in assists. He would finish tied for 10th in points in USL-1 in 2002. Their final USL-1 season in 2003 would be the lone year he would not finish in the top 10 in any of the categories over the last nine years. In all, Swinehart has reached the top 10 in points eight times, in goals five times and in assists five times over that span.

And with statistical success also comes accolades from other teams in the league. Swinehart earned his seventh All-League recognition this season, sixth in the USL Second Division. Despite finishing sixth in points last year, he was surprisingly left off the honors list for the first time in eight USL Second Division seasons since his debut Eagles campaign in 1998. He earned his first honor as a forward in 1999 and repeated, as a midfielder, in 2000. His outstanding USL-1 campaign earned a spot on the First Team at forward in 2001. After two more unheralded campaigns in USL-1, he made his triumphant return to the USL Second Division in 2004 with All-League honors and a return to the final.

Rookie of the Year - Stanley Nyazamba (Richmond Kickers)

Nyazamba joined the Kickers upon graduating from Lee University of the NAIA Conference last spring. In his first professional season, Nyazamba quickly became one of the top scorers, tallying eight goals and two assists overall for 18 points. Good for third on the team in scoring, he also finished in the top 10 in goals and points in the USL-2. Two of his eight goals were also game-winners.

Defender of the Year - Mark Schulte (Cleveland City Stars)

In a historic feat, Schulte became the first player since the award was established in 1998 to repeat as the USL Second Division Defender of the Year. The USL veteran has guided the club to incredible back-to-back seasons of less than one goal allowed per game, finishing with just one more goal allowed than Charlotte this season (16) after being the best in the league last year with only 14 allowed. Schulte played in 18 games for the third place side and also chipped in offensively with two goals and three assists. He played in 20 games with two goals and four assists the year before.

Coach of the Year - Mark Steffens (Charlotte Eagles)

The longtime coach of the Eagles, Steffens became the first coach in league history to earn the USL Second Division Coach of the Year honor twice. He first garnered the honor in 2004, receiving recognition that may have been overdue because of the team's three-year stint in USL-1 following their championship in 2000. The 2008 campaign of 13-2-5 is arguably the best in the Steffen's tenure as the team's coach, marking the fewest losses in a season for Charlotte. Since taking on the position in 1997, Steffens has had only one losing season, the final year in the USL First Division, and has reached the final now six times, winning the 2000 and 2004 titles.

Eagles Prepared for Final Step on Eve of Championship Match

Eagles look on during drills Friday morning

Cleveland, OH - Friday could have been labeled many things based on the events that took place for the Charlotte Eagles. Despite that, there was only one thing that mattered to them at the end of the day; they were hours closer to the game they have waited for since March.

The Eagles' day began with their final training session and walk-through before tomorrow's game at Krenzler Field. The training session was light. Just hours before Head Coach Mark Steffens was announced the 2008 Coach of the Year, the hall of fame coach did not say much about tomorrow's game at this training session. He didn't need to. This was where his team expected to be. They were loose and focused, but not overconfident. That fact was evident at the media luncheon following their morning training session.

"Cleveland is a class organization, and they have played us well ever since they entered this league," remarked Steffens at the luncheon in City Hall. "We are looking forward to a great battle on the field, but more importantly, we hope this game can also be used to impact lives in an eternal way."

The media luncheon included complimentary remarks from both teams and USL Executive VP, Tim Holt. It also featured an appearance by the City of Cleveland's Mayor, Frank G. Jackson. There were also a few humorous moments brought on by the emcee of the event, Jon Loufman. As Loufman asked Eagles captain Dustin Swinehart to come up to the podium to say a few words, the Cleveland News personality admitted to not knowing very much about Swinehart. "As Dustin comes up here, I have to admit I don't know much about you but you are on the list and you are the Eagles' captain so you've got to be a pretty good player," said Loufman.

It didn't take long for Loufman to become familiar with the name Dustin Swinehart. He saw the Eagles' veteran forward several times after that as Swinehart collected four pieces of hardware, including the 2008 USL-2 MVP Award.

The Eagles were then lead to Mayor Jackson's office for a brief meeting with the Mayor and a team picture. The greetings weren't quite over yet for Charlotte as Fox Soccer Channel then conducted several interviews with the team. Soon after, the Eagles retreated to their team hotel before getting a late dinner and finishing the night watching some Olympic highlights.

With the interviews done, compliments traded and awards given out, the final step approaches. At 8pm on Krenzler Field, the Charlotte Eagles will get their chance to complete their season the way they had hoped. The City Stars await with their home crowd. The Eagles have faced challenges all season long. This will undoubtedly be the greatest challenge. Mark Steffens did not say much about that to his team. His team is ready.

The USL-2 Championship game will kick off at 8pm at Krenzler Field, and will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel at 10pm ET (tape delay).

Eagles Land in Cleveland

Charlotte Native Trapp Prepares for Start with Boss' Suspension

Cleveland, OH - After a ten and half hour trip up Interstate 77, the Charlotte Eagles arrived at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Cleveland just past 7pm Thursday evening. After a long bus ride the 2008 USL-2 Regular Season Champions were ready to stretch their legs and get some fresh air.

Not long after arriving at their hotel, the team took a walk around the city which included a brief tour of the Cleveland Indians' Progressive Field. Following the walk, the Eagles conducted a brief team pool workout and finished the night with a late dinner.

Friday will present a busy schedule for both the City Stars and the Eagles. Charlotte will begin their morning with breakfast and then head to Krenzler Field for a light training session and walk-through.

Following training, both teams plan to have a chapel together before attending the USL-2 Championship Media Luncheon and Awards Banquet. The banquet, held at Cleveland's City Hall, will reveal the winners of the Defensive MVP, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year and League Overall MVP. Charlotte features finalists in every category except Rookie of the Year. Those finalists include Steve Shak and Brady Bryant (Defensive MVP), Jorge Herrera and Dustin Swinehart (Overall MVP) and Head Coach Mark Steffens is a finalist for Coach of the Year.

Charlotte Eagles goalkeeper Terry Boss has already been announced Goalkeeper of the Year. Unfortunately, Boss will have to miss the Championship Final due to a controversial foul in the semi-final against Baltimore that resulted in a red card for Boss. Boss was ruled the last defender on a scoring opportunity and thus, by rule, given the red.

Boss' suspension results in an opportunity for Charlotte native and former James Madison University standout, Kevin Trapp. As much as the Eagles will miss having Boss in goal, Charlotte remains just as confident with Trapp between the posts. A starter for Western Mass. in 2007, Trapp started four games this year for Charlotte including a crucial victory over Richmond in June. Ironically, Trapp's last start was in Cleveland against the City Stars just weeks ago. Trapp played excellent in that match, and was on his way to a clean sheet until a controversial penalty kick was awarded to Cleveland in the last minute of the game. The converted PK resulted in a 1-0 win for Cleveland.

The USL-2 Championship Final will kick off at 8pm in Cleveland at Krenzler Field on Saturday, August 23rd. The game will be broadcast on tape delay at 10pm on Fox Soccer Channel.

All-League USL-2 honors announced
Finalists for top awards announced

TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced the USL Second Division All-League honors for the 2008 season, honoring 22 of the top players in the league and the Goalkeeper of the Year as voted on by the league's coaches and general managers. Also unveiled were the finalists for the league's marquee awards to be announced at the championship banquet Friday.

All-League First Team
Goalkeeper of the Year - Terry Boss (Charlotte Eagles)
Boss helped guide the Charlotte Eagles to the regular season championship, personally finishing in the top two of the three key goalkeeping categories. While Boss finished second to GAA Champion Eric Reed of Cleveland (0.583) for the statistical honor with an average of 0.691, he did finish first in wins (11) and shutouts (9), posting one more victory than Richmond's Ronnie Pascale and two more clean sheets than Reed.

The 2008 campaign was the first as the Eagles' starting keeper for Boss, having served as a back-up to Daniel Benton last year and current USL-1 Carolina RailHawks goalkeeper Chris McClellan in 2005. In 2006, he was the reserve netminder for Josh Saunders with the USL-1 Puerto Rico Islanders, seeing action for just 98 minutes in two games. Boss joined the Eagles in 2005 after two brief seasons in the PDL, where he played for the Cascade Surge in 2003 and two games each with Fort Wayne and Vermont in 2004.

Defender - Brady Bryant (Charlotte Eagles)
A newcomer having played arena football last year, Bryant was surprise to not only Charlotte, but their opposition, finishing the year as the team leader in minutes played. He was the lone player on the squad to see action in every game as the team finished the season with the fewest goals allowed at 15.

Defender - Sascha Gorres (Richmond Kickers)
Gorres helped lead Richmond to second in the table and the league's third lowest goals allowed total at 20 on the season. He also contributed in the attack with two goals and three assists in 19 games played this season.

Defender - Mark Schulte (Cleveland City Stars)
Winner of the Defender of the Year honor last season, it is no surprise to see Schulte honored again following a season in which Cleveland allowed just 16 goals, only one more than league-leading Charlotte. Schulte played in 18 games for the third place side and also chipped in offensively with two goals and three assists.

Defender - Steve Shak (Charlotte Eagles)
A veteran from the USL First Division, Shak played a more defensive role for the club this season after earning All-League honors at midfield last year. Shak played in 18 games this season and had one goal on the campaign as he helped guide Charlotte to the regular season title.

Midfielder - Mike Burke (Richmond Kickers)
The 2007 league MVP was basically a shoe-in for the honor again after repeating as the Assist Leader. Burke helped guide Richmond to a third straight top two finish in the table with seven goals and eight assists, ranking fourth in the league in points.

Midfielder - Floyd Franks (Cleveland City Stars)
Franks joined Cleveland after a year with the Chicago Fire Major League Soccer reserve squad and proved to be an instant fit, helping guide the team to third with 1322 minutes over the course of 17 games. He also tallied two goals and an assist on the campaign.

Midfielder - Shintaro Harada (Crystal Palace Baltimore)
One of the most consistent players on the squad, the 2007 All-League Second Team honoree Harada saw action in 19 games with the second most minutes played at 1,637. He helped lead the squad to fourth in the table and scored one goal.

Forward - Jorge Herrera (Charlotte Eagles)
The second-year Eagle made his debut last year as primarily a set-up man for Charlotte, but was part of a dynamic duo with Dustin Swinehart that led to both finishing in the top three of the scoring categories. Herrera finished third in all three with nine goals and six assists for 24 points on the year as Charlotte won the regular season title.

Forward - Boyzzz Khumalo (Pittsburgh Riverhounds)
Despite being on the bottom of the table most of the year, the Riverhounds made a late push for the postseason courtesy of Khumalo's efforts. Khumalo played in all 20 games this season, registering six goals and three assists to finish tied for sixth in points in the league.

Forward - Dustin Swinehart (Charlotte Eagles)
Despite being a veteran star in the USL First and Second Divisions over the years, Dustin's top honor came as the Assist Leader in 2004, and even then he had to share the honor with teammate Jacob Coggins, who swept the scoring awards and MVP honor. With Coggins departing for USL-1 Carolina, Swinehart assumed the role as the primary scorer and did not disappoint, tallying a league leading 16 goals and 39 points while also finishing second in assists with seven.

Championship Bound!
Charlotte Wins 2-1; Advances to USL-2 National Championship against Cleveland

Charlotte, NC: The Charlotte Eagles erased an early deficit to defeat Crystal Palace Baltimore 2-1 tonight at Restart Field. Jorge Herrera and Dustin Swinehart tallied the two Charlotte goals. The win puts Charlotte in the National Championship Match.

With Charlotte's win and Cleveland's 1-0 overtime victory over Richmond off a goal from former Eagle Adam Ruud, Cleveland will host the Eagles at Krenzler Stadium on Saturday, August 23rd at 8pm. The match will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel on tape delay at 10pm August 23rd. This will be Charlotte's 7th Championship Final in 16 years and 4th appearance in the last five years.

Tonight's semifinal match started with both teams pressuring the opposition's defense immediately. The pressure paid off early in the 5th minute for Baltimore as a clearance from the back found Val Teixeira streaking down the left flank. Eagles' defender Ben Johnson went up in the air to challenge Teixeira for the ball and was whistled for a foul just outside the corner of the penalty box. Teixeira lined the kick up and quickly sent a pass across the top of the box for Shintaro Harada. Harada fired a bullet from 20 yards out into the right corner, beating Eagles keeper Terry Boss for an early 1-0 lead.

Despite the early deficit, Charlotte maintained possession and continued to put the pressure on the vastly improved Baltimore squad. Joseph Kabwe was a key factor in that pressure, and the forward's skill almost paid off in the 18th minute as he was fouled just outside the box giving Jorge Herrera a dangerous free kick. Unfortunately for Charlotte's Herrera, his shot sailed just over the crossbar and did not threaten Baltimore's keeper Rowland.

Charlotte continued to keep possession the remainder of the half as Kabwe again broke through the defense off a Dustin Swinehart feed. Kabwe's last touch before his shot with a rushing Rowland was too far ahead of him, and Rowland just got enough of it before Kabwe could get a clean shot off. The first half ended with Charlotte trailing 1-0.

In the second half, the Eagles took the field inspired by their home crowd and quickly attacked Crystal Palace from the whistle. The constant attack paid off soon thereafter in the 48th minute and the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick drawn by Robert Ssejjemba.

The Eagles played their entertaining style of two-touch soccer in the back and worked it up to Jorge Herrera who played a great ball into second half sub, Ssejjemba. The Ugandan forward took a great touch off his chest and turned toward goal, but was taken down in the box by a Baltimore defender. The referee quickly blew the whistle and pointed to the spot. Herrera, who played the great ball in to Ssejjemba, calmly stepped up and nailed a shot to the lower right corner, beating Rowland who dove to his left.

With the game being tied at one, Charlotte immediately continued the pressure and hit pay dirt just three minutes later in the 51st minute. This time, it was 2008 scoring champion Dustin Swinehart putting away the eventual game winner off a fantastic cross from Josh Rife. Rife made a great overlapping run to receive the ball from Joseph Kabwe. Rife, the former Indiana University standout put a left footed cross onto the head of a streaking Swinehart, who made no mistake, assuring the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles continued pressure for the next 20 minutes of the match, and almost extended their lead when Herrera put a header on goal but Rowland made an amazing save to keep the score 2-1.

Baltimore was not finished for the night, as they continued to get opportunities off several Eagles' uncharacteristic miscues including one shot off the post of a beaten Terry Boss.

The Eagles keeper continued to deny Palace several times late in the game until one mistake by his defense cost him the opportunity to play in the USL-2 Final. As the Eagles defense tried to play out the clock, Steve Shak took a pass from Ben Johnson. Shak, not knowing Palace's forward Gary Brooks was behind him, let the ball go back to Boss. Brooks immediately had a breakaway on Boss, and while attempting to make the save, the Eagles keeper made contact with Brooks outside the box. The disputed call led to Boss receiving a red card.

Kante's following free kick off the foul flew high over the crossbar. With seconds ticking off in stoppage time, Eagles back-up keeper Kevin Trapp made one last fantastic save to send the Charlotte Eagles into their 7th USL-2 Final. Although disappointed in the loss of Boss, the Eagles are happy to have another outstanding keeper like Trapp for the final.

Trapp, the Charlotte native and former Myers Park High School standout will lead his team into Krenzler Stadium in Cleveland, OH to take on the Cleveland City Stars for the USL-2 National Championship! Eagles Host Payoff Game Saturday

The Charlotte Eagles will host Crystal Palace Baltimore in USL-2 semifinal action this Saturday at 7pm at Restart Field at Charlotte Christian School.

With last weekends tie against Cleveland the Charlotte Eagles won the USL-2 regular season title. To the victor goes the spoils so the Eagles received a first round bye in Wednesday nights quarterfinal match in which CP Baltimore defeated Harrisburg in penalty kicks.

The Eagles enter Saturdays semifinal unbeaten at home and look to keep it that way. Charlotte defeated CP Baltimore in both meetings earlier this season. However, Baltimore was without leading scorer Gary Brooks in both matches. Crystal Palace has had some impressive results this season, namely their defeat of the New York Red Bull in Open Cup competition. Crystal Palace's momentum will likely be a task for Charlotte and will set up a very exciting USL-2 semifinal match.

Starting September 1, 2008, the Charlotte Eagles are excited to bring to you their new service to the community - The Charlotte Eagles Training Academy - focused on training aspiring young soccer players in technical and tactical skills.

We offer the following training services:

Individual (One on One) sessions - (1 hour)
Pairs and small groups up to 4 players per session - (1 hour)
We offer off-season group/teams sessions for groups of 8 or more - (1.5 hours)

All the sessions are run by professional soccer players who have gone through similar developmental programs in their home countries. The current trainers are:

Charlotte Clinches Regular Season Top Spot

Eagles Tie City Stars 1-1

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles played their 2008 season finale tonight, hosting the Cleveland City Stars at Restart Field. Dustin Swinehart added to his season scoring lead with another goal tonight in a 1-1 tie with the City Stars. The Eagles have a first round bye in the playoffs and return to action on Saturday, August 16th for a semi final match at Restart Field, 7:00 pm.

Charlotte took the first lead of the match in the 18th minute of play. Joseph Kabwe got the ball on the left side and carried the ball into the middle and straight at the Cleveland defense toward goal. Kabwe danced through the defense with the ball and touched it on to Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart fired a shot on goal from ten yards out, beating goalkeeper Eric Reed to take the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for Charlotte the lead wouldn't last. Just seconds after the kick off following the Charlotte goal, Cleveland put the equalizer on the scoreboard. Cleveland played the ball through to the left side for Kwame Sarkodie. Sarkodie, inside the Charlotte 18 yard box put the ball to the far post. Ryan Steward was there on the right side to score off the volley.

The first half was a very even half, with opportunities at both sides of the pitch. Charlotte had a slight edge on attacking play, but shots were nearly even with seven for Charlotte and six for Cleveland. The first half ended in a 1-1 deadlock.

Petro Express was tongiht's game night sponsor. The first 500 fans to register at the game were give a free $10 gas card, and one lucky winner was drawn and awarded $4000 worth of FREE gas from Petro Express. Tonight was also Gifts for Gulu night. Eagles forwards Dustin Swinehart and Robert Ssejjemba shared a bit at halftime about the Eagles work in Gulu Uganda with Sports Outreach.

In the first minute of the second half Cleveland was celebrating what looked to be a goal to take the lead. Sallieu Bundu and Eagles goalkeep Terry Boss went up to make a play on a cross from the left side. The ball ended up in the back of the net and the center referee signaled a goal for Cleveland. The center referee then discussed with the sideline referee and the goal was call back for a hand ball by Bundu.

In the 75th minute Derek Potteiger had a great shot from the top of the box, but Terry Boss was there to make a beautiful diving save to keep the score even. Charlotte and Cleveland played a very physical second half with opportunities at both ends of the field. Both sides played tough defense to keep the second half scoreless and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The game shot statistic was close to even as well with a 12 shots for Charlotte and 11 for Cleveland.

Tonight's tie was enough for the Eagles to clinch the regular season championship. Cleveland will face the Wilmington Hammerheads tomorrow night, but Cleveland has already clinched its playoff qualification.

The Eagles have clinched a spot in the post season along with a bye to the semi finals. Charlotte will host the Eagles semi final match at Restart Field on Saturday, August 16th. Cleveland Defeats Charlotte with Late Penalty Kick Goal

(Cleveland, OH) - The Cleveland City Stars battled the Charlotte Eagles to a scoreless match for nearly a full 90 minutes before Floyd Franks deposited an 89th minute penalty kick to take the 1-0 Cleveland victory.

The Charlotte Eagles had already secured a playoff berth and first round bye, but tonight's loss put's the pressure back on Charlotte to win its regular season finale on Friday night to secure the top seed.

The City Stars defense were the Stars of tonight's game. Defender Anthony Stovall laid out the game plan before the match stating, "We of course want a shut out. For that to happen the back four need to be cohesive and we need to keep possession. If we can get comfortable then the outside backs will be able to attack and contribute." That is precisely the way it worked with both Stovall and Jeremy Tolleson having multiple opportunities to make runs and create chances.

Tonight's City Stars keeper, Eric Reed, also bought into the defense's motto of "Safe and Solid". Reed only had to work intermittently for his clean sheet, but he did have to come up big on several occasions most importantly in extra time after the second half of play when he made a diving save to secure the ball after it ricocheted off captain Mark Schulte who was guarding the near post. He was solid all night, keeping the net safe.

At the other end of the pitch, #00 Kevin Trapp for the Eagle's played a courageous and nearly flawless game as well. With the exception of the penalty kick he handled everything that came his way, many times coming off his line to intercept balls served across the box that otherwise may have developed into viable opportunities for the Stars.

Even though Charlotte had the first legitimate chance in the 5th minute, it was really the City Stars who controlled the pace of the game. The Stars worked hard to manufacture a goal, time and again working the ball into the box or earning free kicks as they battled for possession. Their first real opportunity came in the 44th minute when Sallieu Bundu received the ball in traffic, albeit mostly friendly, turned on it arcing the ball just over the crossbar.

Eleven minutes later the Stars were once again counter attacking when #17 Ryan Stewart from Trinidad eagerly tried to take advantage of the open space on the far post. Unfortunately he pushed the ball just wide. In the 69th minute, the Stars were able to put several passes together, moving the ball fluidly until Derek Potteiger lost possession. But by his own great individual effort he recovered the ball working it out of the corner and clear of his defender to set up the shot.

It wasn't a 5 goal game tonight, and the numerous opportunities that went unrealized throughout both halves kept the 1871 fans on the edge of their bleacher seats. Nonetheless, after the battle, both teams came together to worship and share their personal testimonies which is just another reminder that victories are earned both on and off the field for these players.

Eagles Clinch First Round Bye in Playoffs
After 2-1 Win at Pittsburgh

(Pittsburgh, PA) - The Charlotte Eagles faced the Pittsburgh Riverhounds tonight in the first of a two game road trip. Jorge Herrera and Jonah Long each scored one to lead Charlotte to a 2-1 victory over the hounds. Charlotte's win clinches a first round bye in the playoffs to the semi-finals.

Charlotte tallied first when Jorge Herrera knocked in a goal from about 17-yards out. It was set up by some nice, quick touches by the Eagles' side. Robert Ssejjemba put it right to Herrera's boot. Herrera held it for what seemed to be an eternity before he jammed it past Pittsburgh's Zach Varga in the 37th minute.

The Pittsburgh Riverhounds' only goal came on a Justin Evans penalty kick in the 39th minute after John Robens Jerome was tackled by Charlotte Eagles goalkeeper Terry Boss on a Pittsburgh attack. Evans' off-speed shot to the lower right got by Boss to make it a 1-1 match, just two minutes after the Eagles scored.

The game-winner came on a long delivery, ironically by Jonah Long. He rocketed one above Varga from about 30-yards out, as Charlotte weaved its way up the pitch on an attack. The assist came from Patrick Daka in the 79th minute.

Charlotte strengthened its hold on first place in the United Soccer Leagues Second Division with the victory. Pittsburgh is still fighting for its playoff life, and will have to watch the rest of the USL-2 scoreboard to determine if they are still alive.

Eagles Shutout Crystal Palace, 3-0

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles hosted Crystal Palace Baltimore tonight at Restart Field. Steve Shak, Jorge Herrera and Dustin Swinehart all posted goals for Charlotte in the 3-0 victory. With tonight's victory the Eagles strengthen their position at the top of the USL-2 standings with a record of 12-1-4, for 40 points.

Charlotte scored the first goal of the match in the eighth minute of play. The Eagles won a throw in after attacking down the right side. Ben Johnson took the throw, putting it to the near post for Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart won the header and flicked it on to the far post. Veteran defender Steve Shak was unmarked at the far post for the easy finish, touching it in.

The Eagles extended the lead to two goals in the 17th minute. The play began with a long ball played down the left side for Robert Ssejjemba. Ssejjemba continued the attacked playing a one-two with Joseph Kabwe before sending a cross the right side for Jorge Herrera. Herrera controlled the ball and fired a well placed shot just inside the right post to beat Brian Rowland in the Crystal Palace goal.

The first half was all Charlotte, with some outstanding possession and build up on the attack. Charlotte out-shot Crystal Palace 13-5 in the half.

Crystal Palace made a better effort of it in the second half as Charlotte turned the pressure down a notch. Baltimore almost put one in the net in the 74th minute. Crystal Palace intercepted a pass from the Charlotte defense and a pass across for Pat Healy. Healy had an open goal chance to score, but he put the shot wide right.

Charltote extended its lead to 3-0 in the 80th minute of play. Darren Toby played a great through ball forward for Dustin Swinehart on the attacked. Swinehart manuvered wide right to get around goalkeeper Rowland. Swinehart beat Rowland and made a tough angle shot from the right side into the open net. It was Swinehart's 15th goal of the regular season, leading the league.

The match ended with a 3-0 victory for Charlotte. The Eagles out-shot Crystal Palace 11-4 in the second half and 24-9 for the whole match. It was Terry Boss's nineth shutout of the season. Boss was only forced to make one save in the match, but Brian Rowland had eight saves for Crystal Palace.

The Eagles have a two game road trip next weekend facing the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Friday, August 1st in Pittsburgh, then it is off to Cleveland on for a match on Saturday night against the Cleveland City Stars. The Eagles return to home field action at Restart Field on Friday, August 8th to host the Cleveland City Stars in the Eagles final regular season match. The Eagles have clinched a spot in the USL-2 post season, but final seeding will be determined by the remaining regular season matches.

Herrera Earns Five Assists in 8-0 Charlotte Win
Over Real Maryland

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Eagles hosted the Real Maryland Monarchs tonight at Restart Field. Jorge Herrera assisted on five goals while Swinehart, Kabwe and Ssejjemba scored two goals each in the 8-0 shutout of the Monarchs. The Eagles win strengthened their position at that top of the USL-2 standings for a record of 11-1-4 for 37 points.

Jorge Herrera was the spark in the Eagles engines during the first half of the match. Herrera set up Dustin Swinehart for both first half Charlotte goals. The Eagles first goal came in the 10th minute of play. Jorge Herrera attacked down the right side line and pushed through to the endline before sending a ball into the middle. Swinehart ran onto the cross from Herrera and beat Real Maryland goalkeeper Emilio Zelaya with a shot just inside the left post.

In the 24th minute Herrera nearly scored one himself off a cross from Swinehart. Herrera took a volley shot and sent the ball blistering off the crossbar.

Herrera and Swinehart combined on their second goal in the final minute of the half. Herrera in the midfield lifted a ball up over the defense and bending into the line of attack of Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart controlled with his chest and broke away toward goal. He fired off a shot to beat Zelaya on the left side of goal. The teams went to halftime with the Eagles up 2-0.

The flood gates opened for Charlotte in the second half, and Herrera continued to be a huge part of the Charlotte offensive throughout the half. The Eagles extended their lead to three in the opening minute with an unassisted goal by Josephy Kabwe. Kabwe collected the ball and rifled off a shot. His shot deflected off a Monarchs defender and continued into the net.

Six minutes later Joseph Kabwe assisted Robert Ssejjemba to put the Eagles up 4-0. Kabwe attacked on the left side and slotted a pass through for the finish by Ssejjemba who was loosely covered.

Joseph Kabwe scored his second goal of the match in the 55th minute. Jorge Herrera manuvered down the end line from the right side and served up a perfect ball for Kabwe who knocked it home to beat Zelaya in goal. It was Herrera's third assist on the night.

Robert Ssejjemba scored his second goal of the night in the 60th minute. Taurai Daka played the ball in for Robert Ssejjemba on the left side. Ssejjemba ran onto the ball and blasted inside the near post from 15 yards out. Ssejjemba's goal extended the Charlotte lead to 6-0.

Taurai Daka added a goal of his own in the the 78th minute. Real Maryland got caught off guard when the referee signaled to play on when the Monarchs were looking for a whistle. Daka and Herrera continued on toward goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. Herrera passed to Daka for the easy finish.

Charlotte got its final goal of the game in the 82nd minute. Jorge Herrera earned his fifth assist of the game, combining with Gustavo Bentos to wrap up the match 8-0.

The Charlotte Eagles return to home field action next Saturday night hosting Crystal Palace Baltimore at Restart Field. Fans can save $2.00 per ticket by purchasing them online by midnight Friday, July 25th. Tickets can also be purchased at the gate; $10 for adults, $7.00 for students (6-18), kids five and under get FREE admission.

Undefeated Atlanta Still Trouble for Lady Eagles

(Charlotte, NC) - The Charlotte Lady Eagles hosted the division leading Atlanta Silverbacks tonight at Restart Field. Despite scoring the opening goal, the Lady Eagles could not hand Atlanta. Christine Latham scored three goals to lead the Silverbacks Women to a 4-2 victory over the Lady Eagles.
Charlotte and Atlanta battled in the midfield for control of the match though much of the first half, but it was the Lady Eagles who took the first lead of the match. Defender Ashley Swinehart pushed up the right side into the midfield and played the ball forward for Schemedes on the run. Schmedes danced around the last Atlanta defender and beat Atlanta goalkeeper Allison Whitworth with a well-placed shot inside the left post.
Just as the Lady Eagles seemed to be heading to halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Silverbacks women scored in the 45th minute. Former Lady Eagles forward Sarah Steinmann connected with Christine Latham to split the Lady Eagles defense. Latham beat Lady Eagles goalkeeper Laura Armstrong to send the match to halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
The Lady Eagles started out the second half a bit flat and Atlanta took full advantage with another goal by Christine Latham in the 47th minute. This time Latham was played in by Molly Franklin, creating a fast break. Armstrong rushed out from the net in an attempt to suppress the attack, but Latham put a shot up over Armstrong and into the left side of the goal.
Christine Latham completed her hat trick in the 67th minute. Atlanta lofted a ball into the congested box toward Laura Armstrong. Armstrong got to the ball but it rebounded to Latham who poked it into the goal.
Jill Porto extended the Atlanta lead to 4-1 in the 68th minute off a penalty kick. Tamires Gomes was whistled for a hand ball just inside the Charlotte 18 yard box. Porto stepped up to take the penalty and beat Armstrong with a shot into the right side of the goal.
Charlotte cut the lead back to two goals in the 77th minute off a free kick from 50 yards out. Lydia Vandenbergh took the free kick, putting up for Ashley Swinehart in the box. Swinehart got up for a beautiful header, redirecting the serve and beating Whitworth inside the left post.
