Magnesium will become the material of choice as designers strive to improve energy efficiency in transportation.

(Vocus) February 27, 2009 -- Magnesium and its alloys are being considered for structural applications in every type of vehicle because of their favorable combination of tensile strength, elastic modulus, and low density, according to ASM International (www.asminternational.org/amp), the materials information society.

In the article ''Magnesium in the 21st Century,'' Robert E. Brown of the Magnesium Assistance Group Inc., Prattville, Ala., describes magnesium alloys as having high strength-to-weight ratios and relatively good electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as high damping capacity.

"Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, and the third most plentiful element dissolved in seawater," Brown said. "Because magnesium is found in seawater, it is available in almost limitless quantities: A cubic mile of seawater contains six million tons of magnesium metal."

Two major magnesium alloy systems are available. The first includes alloys that contain 2 to 10% aluminum, combined with minor additions of zinc and manganese. These alloys are widely available at moderate cost, and their mechanical properties are good at temperatures up to 95 to 120°C (200 to 250°F). However, above these temperatures properties deteriorate rapidly.

The second group consists of magnesium alloyed with elements such as rare earths, zinc, thorium, silver, and silicon (but not aluminum), all containing a small but effective zirconium content that imparts a fine-grain structure (and thus improved mechanical properties). These alloys generally possess better elevated-temperature properties, but they are more expensive because of their more costly elemental additions and specialized manufacturing technology.

Aluminum metal, which is not easy to get from its ores, has become a 30 million ton per year business, while magnesium has struggled to reach about 800,000 tons per year. "Realistically, world production must grow to over one million metric tons per year if it is to be seriously considered for widespread applications," Brown said.

The largest amounts of magnesium will continue to be for aluminum alloying, but Brown expects that it will continue to be needed for desulfurization of steel ''if the price is competitive.'' Interest in magnesium is growing in technologies such as thixomolding, extrusions, sheet, and forgings. "Magnesium can also provide huge structural and economic advantages in automotive and aerospace applications, based on life cycle analysis," Brown said.

Report Concludes $315 Billion Needed in Next 22 Years

Austin (Vocus) February 26, 2009 -- The Texas Transportation Commission today adopted the 2030 Committee's Texas Transportation Needs Report, which concludes that meeting Texas' transportation needs between 2009 and 2030 will require $315 billion. The needs estimate focuses on the investment that will be necessary to maintain the pavements and bridges on Texas roadways; to prevent worsening traffic congestion in urban areas; and to ensure rural mobility and safety. The Committee based its estimates on several factors, including increased population growth and freight traffic between 2009 and 2030.

"This report demonstrates the tough transportation challenges facing the state of Texas through the next several decades," said Texas Transportation Commission Chair Deirdre Delisi. "TxDOT is ready to work with local and state governments to find innovative solutions that provide Texans with the transportation system they expect. I appreciate the efforts of the 2030 Committee and applaud their hard work and dedication in identifying transportation needs of the future."

The 2030 Committee is comprised of 12 Texas business and civic leaders appointed by Delisi in May 2008. She charged the Committee with independently determining the fiscal requirements for the state's future transportation needs. The Committee presented an executive summary of its draft findings to the Texas Transportation Commission in December and posted the draft report on the 2030 Committee website for public comment from Jan. 9 to Jan. 31 prior to finalizing the report.

"Data from communities of all sizes clearly show that transportation is one of the top concerns of Texans," said Dr. C. Michael Walton, chair of the Committee. "In a resource-constrained environment, our state's leaders must make tough financial decisions over the next two decades. Our report provides an independent estimate of the level of transportation need over the next 22 years and urges our leaders to consider the economic and quality of life enhancements that dollars spent on transportation improvements can provide."

The 2030 Committee report, provides a comprehensive analysis of estimated transportation needs, anticipated costs in 2008 dollars and resulting benefits from highway maintenance (pavements and bridges), urban mobility and rural mobility and safety. The recommendations do not address specific projects, solutions or funding sources. The analysis is used as a tool to estimate the level of investment needed, but the funding could be used on other transportation modes. The timeframe of the report did not permit an in-depth analysis of other transportation modes that could complement traditional highway capacity, such as public transportation, freight and intercity passenger rail, ports and waterways and airports. However, the report includes an overview of these modes, with the Committee's recommendation for further study.

The committee held public hearings in six Texas cities and solicited public comment via e-mail, postal mail and fax. In all, about 180 individuals offered suggestions and comments, including 91 who testified in person during the public hearings. The committee provided guidance and direction to a nationally renowned team of transportation experts who conducted the technical analysis. Team members are from the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University; the Center for Transportation Research at the University of Texas at Austin; and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

In the press release it issued today to announce the start of the plants operations, POET said in 2011, it will roll out a $200 million commercial-scale cellulosic plant in Iowa.

Todays announcement, of course, is a major development and a big leap to energy independence. More good news is that cellulosic ethanol utilizes non-food crops; so therell not be politicking that food security will be compromised. A lot of politics continues to dog food-crops-based ethanol. There are those who claim that diverting food crops, such as corn, to ethanol production is to blame for the current food shortages. There are others who dismiss such an argument as baseless and not supported by facts. Whatever the merits or demerits of using food-crops to make ethanol, POET is demonstrating that the journey to reliable and clean energy is unstoppable.

Theres every reason to cheer up POET, and of course the Federal government, which provided seed money for research. Renewable sources of energy, such as cellulosic ethanol, hold the key to energy independence. President-Elect Baraka Obama, for instance, has said as much on the issue. He has promised massive investments into the next generation of biofuels. POET and other companies in the biofuels business have no excuse of not doubling efforts to produce biofuels. Political will is already there; its up to them to exploit it.

The mix of attractions is why the Adrian Flux French Car Show appeals as much to families as to petrol heads. There are several changes to the 2009 show. Responding to visitor's feedback, the organisers have shifted the trade village and show cars from the centre of the circuit to the area at the front of the stadium. This means there's no need for visitors to walk through the Rockingham tunnel to get to the village. There's also a new, dedicated campsite for visitors about 20 minutes drive from Rockingham. Says Mark Dow: "The site has beautiful grounds with a lake and all sorts of features including a roller coaster, which should keep kids of all ages happy!"

Tickets for the Adrian Flux French Car Show cost £12.50 in advance, or £15 on the gate, and under-14s go free. Camping costs £15 per car of up to four people. Book in advance through www.frenchcarshow.co.uk and get priority car parking and a free window sticker.

Ford and Shelby combined their efforts and created a muscle car to rival any other. It was the first time since 1967 that the two had come together to design and create something that consumers would love to have - the 2007 Shelby Ford Cobra Mustang.

The original model that they worked on - the first Shelby Cobra GT500 edition Mustang - was built with a big block V8, 7 liter engine that had the ability to produce 360 horsepower. It was only around for two years when it was replaced by the GT-500 King of the Road in 1969. That hasnt stopped this from becoming one of the most valuable cars on the market.

The 2007 Ford Shelby Cobra was based on the redesign that was created and made the North American Car of the Year and the Canadian Car of the Year - the 2005 GT-500. Not only is this one of the most affordable Mustangs you will ever find it is also one of the fastest.

Underneath the hood of this 2007 model is a V8, 5.4 liter engine that has the ability tto push out 500 horsepower and 480 pound-ft of torque at 4,500 RPM. This engine is mated to a six speed manual transmission. Together they allow the Mustang to rev from 0 to 60 in 4.91 seconds.

It is available in two separate trims that include a coupe and powered soft top convertible. Standard to each model are leather seats, 500 watt sound system, and an in dash CD changer. It also comes with 18 machined aluminum wheels that have Goodyear F1 tires. Racing stripes run down the side of both models though customers have the option of removing these. But what would a Mustang be without these stripes?

As with every car that we look at one of the biggest things that we look for in a car is power, handling, and of course safety! Having power is great - but if it is not safe what good is it to us? The 2007 Ford Shelby Mustang Cobra received a five star rating for frontal crash test as well as a four star rating for side impact. These scores came from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
