Casey urges altruism as a dating strategy.

Dating service to pay $500K to settle suit

Mesa, Arizona - A Scottsdale-based dating service has agreed to pay half a million dollars in restitution and fines to settle a lawsuit filed by state Attorney General Terry Goddard.

The suit alleged the company - Sun West Video, doing business as Great Expectations for Singles - used coercive sales tactics and misrepresentations to sell expensive memberships to Arizona consumers, typically costing thousands of dollars.

Bradley Gardner, attorney for Great Expectations, said the company agreed to settle to avoid costly litigation and to avoid having to turn over confidential member's files to the attorney general's office.

He said the service has agreed to alter its business practices to meet the objections of the attorney general.

"We felt it would be better to be a good business neighbor and work with the attorney general," he said.

Gardner said the complaints involved about 174 members out of more than 8,000 members going back eight years.

Under the settlement, Great Expectations is required to pay $250,000 in restitution to eligible customers and $250,000 to the state of Arizona for consumer-fraud prevention programs, Goddard said.

The attorney general filed the suit in June 2008, alleging that Great Expectations violated the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act and the Arizona Dating Referral Services Act.

Named in the suit were Sun West Video President John Meriggi, Great Expectations Director Michael Buhler and sales representative Geri Schencker.

Among the deceptive and illegal practices alleged by the attorney general were that company executives misrepresented the number of participating members and number of new members joining each month.

Also, the attorney general said they falsely claimed to have conducted criminal background checks on all their members and claimed that two or three marriages occurred between members every month when they had no credible basis to back up such statements.

They also illegally extended initial memberships while misleading consumers into believing they had no right to cancel the agreements, the AG's office said.

And they obtained consumers' credit information as soon as they arrived at the Great Expectations office before they agreed to purchase a membership and subjected prospective customers to high-pressure sales tactics during hours long presentations, the attorney general said.

Program aims to cut teen dating violence

BOISE — Idaho high schools will focus on ways to reduce violence against teenagers in dating relationships this month.

Organizers point to a recent survey that found 13 percent of Idaho high school students reported being hit, slapped, or punched by their dating partners within the past 12 months. It also found that 11 percent of high schools girls said they had been forced to engage in unwanted sexual contact.

The Idaho Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Project, a partnership of the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, the Idaho Department of Education and other allied organizations, has developed an education and prevention strategy to eliminate the prevalence and cultural acceptance of teen dating violence in Idaho.

Posters and stickers that promote healthy teen relationships as part of the "No Means No" campaign have been distributed to all of Idaho's public and private secondary schools.

During February, high schools throughout the state will sponsor and hold awareness activities.

Dear Washington: Nah. But there still are the problems it always had, which are: forced circumstances, unrealistic expectations, more opportunities than usual for deception, suppressed consequences for bad behavior.

Not that any of these is unique to online dating, just that it seems to bring them all together in one place -- a place that also happens to attract people who are particularly awkward or vulnerable. Proceed with eyes open.

Dear Carolyn: I agree with all the caveats, but I think it's really important to distinguish the types of interactions one can have in that environment. My understanding is that the best strategy is to exchange two or three e-mails with a person before meeting up for coffee or something else informal, which closely approximates more traditional methods of meeting up.

When you're online, you're meeting someone outside the societal vetting process, so your histories are obscured, and you're meeting with your motives out in the open.

Under older-fashioned conditions, it's the exact opposite: Your histories are wide open but your motives are obscured. I haven't seen anything to budge me from my belief that this stark reversal needs to be accompanied by a just-as-stark adjustment in participants' expectations.

Dear Carolyn: Online dating has some vetting built in. It requires steady Internet access and usually a credit card. And you can Google just about anyone these days. That is, if they haven't already posted info voluntarily on social networking sites.

What spectacular, trustworthy "societal vetting process" is going on at bars and the gym? Even accepting a blind date from a friend doesn't mean your friend vetted the person very well.

I'm glad you brought up "bars and the gym" and blind dates. These represent the outer edge of "old-fashioned conditions." I meant meeting people through friends, at work or school, through common interests, daily life. That gives you an idea of someone's track record. Hardly foolproof, but useful.

But even, say, at the gym, you can pick up signs of preening or leering, rudeness to staff, bad situational manners, along with animal-

level information your senses pick up. Also not foolproof, but there's no denying its value. Not having these tools when you select someone is a dramatic departure from old-

Dating Defense Doomed; Baltimore Mayor Indicted

Apparently, the dating defense is dead.

Baltimore's popular mayor was indicted today on charges she illegally took gifts from a lobbyist ex-boyfriend, including plane tickets, fur coats and holiday gift items.

Sheila A. Dixon, a Democrat and and the basis for the shrewd and calculating character Naresse Campbell on HBO's "The Wire," was indicted by a grand jury on 12 counts, including four counts of perjury and two counts of theft over $500. She was also charged with theft under $500, fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary and misconduct in office.

The 55-year-old former Baltimore City councilwoman is accused of accepting gifts, including a $2,000 gift certificate at a Baltimore furrier and an airplane ticket, from her then-boyfriend, developer Ronald H. Lipscomb, whom she dated from 2003 to 2004 while he lobbied the city for millions in tax credits for development projects, the Baltimore Sun reported.

"I am being unfairly accused," Dixon said in a statement. "Time will prove that I have done nothing wrong, and I am confident that I will be found innocent of these charges."

Two of Dixon's business associates have already been indicted (Lipscomb has not been charged in connection with Dixon, but was indicted earlier this week on one count of bribery involving another Baltimore official, a council member, in the same public corruption probe.). Sun columnist Laura Vozzella noted in today's editions that "even if it was romance and not business, Dixon shouldn't have voted on her lover's projects, however awkward it might have been to announce: "Gotta recuse myself on this one; I'm sleeping with the developer."

Dixon and Lipscomb were both married, but separated from, other people at the time of their relationship. Dixon later divorced.

Trends in Dating and ‘Hooking Up’

Re “The Demise of Dating,” by Charles M. Blow (column, Dec. 13):

While “hooking up” and its implicit sexuality do not seem like the ideal way to start a relationship, it still sounds better than what I recall about dating.

Having dated extensively before settling down, I don’t recall ever having a meaningful relationship emanate from the classic dating scene. I hated the time, money and stress invested in this activity, which often led to boredom and disappointment.

True romances came through group interactions within meaningful contexts, including work and other activities. I guess these were “hookup” without yet having that title.

Given the poor success rate of marriages of past generations, I am happy to sit back and hope that my daughters find their life partners in a more meaningful way than we were trained our whole life to do. Once they remove the knots from the new hookup scene, it sounds as if it could be the way to go.

As a 23-year-old, I seem to be just outside the hookup culture as defined by Charles M. Blow. But while getting into relationships, I have reflected on the fact that I got into each of them without going on a single date. I didn’t need to; I already knew the people I was becoming romantically involved with and knew we were good matches.

So I was particularly intrigued by Prof. Kathleen Bogle’s quote — “Now we’ve lost that ability — the ability to just ask someone out and get to know them” — when I’ve found myself thinking just the opposite. Wasn’t it sad that men and women couldn’t get to know one another outside of the formal context set up solely to lead people to marriage?

I’m glad we have moved beyond that. And I am quite pleased with my dateless relationships.

I was disappointed to read “The Demise of Dating.” From using worn-out stereotypes best left to women’s magazines to the assumption that by engaging in hookups young people therefore no longer have the skills or the desire to get to know their peers, this latest effort to understand hookup culture brings little nuance to the discussion.

Though I may just be under Charles M. Blow’s 30-year-old age barrier and recently married, my experience with this world is not such a distant memory.

During my dating life, I knew men who were actively looking for long-term relationships and women who just wanted to have fun with a cute guy. It is no secret among my peers that a hookup often promises no more than a quick and fun sexual adventure and that to find a serious mate it’s going to take a lot more than a make-out session in the back room of a bar.

Hooking up does not signal the death of meaningful emotional or intellectual relationships. It simply is an opportunity for people to experiment while on the road to more serious relationships, whenever those may happen.

Dating expert helps women break out of midlife shell

Flirting is hard.

Certainly, the act of batting an eyelash or two, giving a wink or smiling sweetly is not challenging, per se, but for any single woman without the genetic blessings of Christie Brinkley, channeling the necessary self-confidence can be.

Doing those things after a divorce, a bad breakup or just midlife can be even harder.
That's where Joann Cohen comes in.

For nearly a year, the 51-year-old Scottsdale woman has worked as a dating and relationship coach, helping professionals, typically ages 35-55, figure out how to flirt, date and feel confident.

When she was 45, Cohen divorced, left her job in human resources and reinvented herself, researching dating techniques. She got good at it and went pro, backing up intuition and expert advice with scientific studies.

It's why on a recent Friday night, she was standing next to a long table at Scottsdale's Tapino Kitchen & Wine Bar, passing out materials marked "Advanced Flirting" to 15 wine- and martini-sipping women who had come to her for advice.

The Wild Boomer Women, a social organization for 40- to 60-something women, booked Cohen to teach this class, followed by in-field flirting at nearby Eli's American Grille.

Some were freshly divorced, off the dating scene for nearly two decades; others were crippled by shyness; and others just felt unsexy, unconfident.

"This is not the Mystery Method," Cohen said, referring to the game-playing strategy popularized on the recent VH1 show The Pick-Up Artist.

The class

It was, instead, an hour and a half of dating tips, supported by scientific studies and empowering talk, with chances to practice sprinkled throughout. The women were well-dressed, with glossed lips and tasteful hair. They came to meet men. But they had notebooks and pens. They came to do it right.

Phoenix's Sue Barenholtz, 52, is the curvaceous, unofficial queen of the Wild Boomer Women. She had been married for nearly two decades and spoke for many in the class when she explained her flirting woes.

"I shrink up whenever I go to Eli's and no one ever notices me," Barenholtz said. "I want to go home as soon as I get there because I'm not flirting with anyone."

Julia French, 50, of Apache Junction, related a similar anxiety: "When there is a full room of people, I don't even want to cross into it."

Cohen said flirting could change all that.

"Women who display flirting behaviors are approached much more often than an attractive woman who doesn't flirt," Cohen said.

"I don't know if I can believe that," Barenholtz said.

But Cohen remained undaunted, pointing out that Barenholtz rarely attempts flirting. To remedy that, Cohen advises being universally charismatic, with both people you're interested in and people you're not.

"When you flirt with everyone, you look approachable, nice and you make other people feel special," she said.

A lawyer from Chandler, Janice Palmer, 56, said that after a few failed marriages, she wants to feel sexy again but has no idea how to dress.

So Cohen gave advice about what kind of clothes to buy, and even whom to shop with.

"A 20- or 30-something daughter will never give you good advice on clothes because they want you to dress like them," Cohen said.

Then it was time to practice. Cohen told the women that studies show women are "50 percent more attractive when they walk with a natural sway" in their hips.

"Also, stop telling yourself that you're not pretty enough or chesty enough," she said. "Replace those thoughts with 'I'm sexy and I'm sassy.' "

The women laughed and catcalled each other as they practiced their new walks, and some shot their waiter, Brandon, a flirty glance.

Then they practiced the classic "make eye contact, look away, look back and smile" routine, one of 52 techniques Cohen teaches. She told them about the "flirting triangle," where a woman looks into a man's eyes, looks down at his mouth, and back to his eyes during conversation.

"I can't believe that some of this stuff works," said Karen Kirby, 50, of Phoenix.

To prepare for Eli's, Cohen whipped out a layout of the bar and told them they were to work the room in groups of three without clustering.

"You will be the ones doing the approaching," Cohen said. "And don't just talk to one guy all night; really work the room and don't wait for them to ask you to dance. Ask them."

Some smiled nervously. Others dropped their jaws.

The challenge

At 9 p.m., the 15 women walked over to Eli's, and once inside, instantly clustered in the loud, crowded bar.

Divorced after 17 years of marriage, Beth Keller, 48, of Fountain Hills, has been single for a year and was nervous. She sat at the edge of the bar and looked down at her cocktail as though it might ask her to dance.

"I haven't really been out since I've been single," she said.

But others were bolder. The once-doubting Kirby strutted around the bar, swaying her hips purposefully.

French, who'd put on a jeweled crown as a flirting prop, smiled in all directions.

Finally, Keller inhaled deeply and approached a much younger man with a bald head and cute smile.

They talked for three songs, Keller channeling Cohen's advice, briefly touching his shoulder, smiling and maintaining eye contact.

Then she walked out to the dance floor and he followed.

By 9:45 p.m., nearly half of the women were on the dance floor with men.

The others chatted up men. Kirby gushed that she'd talked with two men already.

French sashayed nearby with a wide smile.

"I have been flirting with the youngest men tonight, and they are eating it up," she said. "I walked past a group of men, and when I looked back they were watching me. I have never had that happen and am honestly smiling from the inside out."

Dating and age: How low can you go?

I'm a newly single man in his late 30s with no kids and I was wondering about your views on age and dating. In my view, if I want a family of my own, I need to date younger women. But if I don't want a family or want to have stepkids, then dating same age or older is the way to go.

What are the pros and cons of older/younger? How young is too young?

Sounds as if you have only one problem in life - and that's deciding what you want. How can I tell you if you want to have kids or not?

I do find it rather cold when people, male or female, pick partners as breeding machines. Why don't you just date someone you really like and are attracted to - or is that me being naively romantic?
I have a feeling you are really curious about younger women, but worry that such a liaison would be unseemly. Have you ever heard the French maxim about suitable age differences? It's said (by arrogant and sexist old buggers) that the woman should be half the guy's age plus seven. That means the age difference will increase as you grow older. (If you're 20, she will be 17; if you're 60, she will be 37.) Hey, I'm not endorsing it; I'm just saying that large age differences are not abnormal.

I myself have only one rule: If you're over 30, then women under 25 are too young. Twenty-five is the youngest any civilized guy over 30 should go. Why is this? Because people of university age - male or female - are still teenagers. I find there is an enormous difference in maturity between a 23-year-old and a 27-year-old. It's quite unlike the difference between a 27-year-old and a 37-year-old (which is trivial). People over 25 are (almost) all adults, and they are all fascinating in different ways. Their ages aren't important.

I was curious about popular views on this matter, so my online magazine, XYCanada.com, commissioned a survey to find out if our subscribers (about 30,000 across Canada, mostly guys, mostly single) agreed. We asked several questions: What is the optimal age difference in a relationship? What age difference is too great (if the guy is older and the woman is younger)? What is the greatest age difference in your own relationship history? And what is the most significant obstacle to dating a younger woman?

To my surprise, our hip, urban guys were markedly conservative on this issue. The most popular answer was that one to five years was the optimum age difference, and that a difference of more than 10 years was insurmountable. "Differences in life experience" was the reason most often selected for not doing it. And most of them had done it: 62 per cent of respondents have had relationships where the age difference was greater than 5 years, so they are speaking from experience.

So there you have it: many Canadian men disapprove of cradle robbing.

Lets face it, we all, at some level, dream of that perfect someone. We dream of that man or woman who will come into our lives and chase all those clouds of loneliness away. We want to be with that special person who understands us, adores us, loves us and is one with us.

The idea of soul mates is not a new one and could very safely be said to be as old as the history of man himself. There is something within men and women that makes them seek out that special relationship with that special someone; that someone that is supposedly made especially for them.

Unfortunately for too many though, the dream of finding their soul mate remains just that, a dream. These days, lots of people are starting to actually abandon this dream. However, the truth is that we really don't have to.

Finding our soul mates is a possible and attainable goal when we go about it the right way.

In my life as a single person I have had the privilege dating quite a number of wonderful ladies. In the course of all those dates I have come across some truly astounding women and some "ok" women.

One of the things that I have come to believe is that we don't really have one soul mate. On the contrary, we have soul mates. Sounds kind of bizarre I know but that has been my experience in life and with women.

That is why I don't believe that saying that says love comes only once in a persons life time. In my opinion, love comes more than once. In fact I would say that love comes many times in one's life.

Now here is the question. If love comes many times over is there any need to value the love you've found now (especially since they are not perfect) if you could toss it away and find love again (and maybe someone better too) just around the corner? Why not trade the love you've found now for a better one?

Well that's the catch. Each love experience is real and is unique. That's great to know actually but that's not the reason why you shouldn't be in a hurry to play around with the love you've found now. The real problem is that I have found that with most people, finding love takes time. In other words while you might always be able to find someone new to love and who loves you back in return, if you let go of your present love, chances are that it could take you anywhere from six months to three years or more to find a new love.

The bottom line is, take good care of the love you find because while you may always be able to find love if you wait long enough, finding true love takes time and too many times time is something we don't have enough of. If you doubt me ask a 55yr old man or woman who is looking for love. In my opinion they really don't have the luxury of dumping their old love in search for a new one just for the fun of it.

Now, enough of the blabbering. How really can one find ones soul mate? Below are outlined some steps that will definitely come in handy in your quest to locate you soul mate.

1. know who you are

It's essential that you know who you are, know what you want, and know what it would take to satisfy you. In order for you to be adequately able to know what it will take to satisfy you in a mate you have to first have a healthy understanding of who your are. If you do not understand yourself, you will find it difficult to recognize the sort of person who will give you the love and understanding that you seek.

Know your strengths and your weaknesses. When you know this, it becomes easy to be able to identify the sort of person who will compliment you. One of the characteristics of a soul mate is that they compliment you. In other words, they are strong in lots of places in which you are weak.

2. know what you want

Once you have gotten a good understanding of who you are, (your strengths, weaknesses and all), it becomes easier to recognize and identify the right man or woman for you. To really make this picture of who you want to be with clearer, I would suggest you took out some time to outline at least ten basic characteristics or behavioral and personality traits that your kind of person should have.

It's like creating a shopping list. With a well prepared list it becomes easier for you to stay focused when you go "spouse shopping" and not to waste your valuable resources of time, energy and emotions on non-suitable members of the opposite sex.

3. Become better

Too often we neglect to get on with our lives and to achieve our dreams in other areas of our lives because we are too busy waiting for our soul mates; waiting for love.

Unknowingly, too many people sabotage their chances of finding their soul mates and true love at that, by this very approach.

Everyone loves a winner and the more confident and developed our intellects and our minds are the more attractive we are likely to be to members of the opposite sex. In your search for through love you must resist the temptation to put your life on hold. Don't let go of your dreams because you are too busy waiting for love to find you. On the other hand, there have been other times when I have been out there seriously single and searching but while I managed to meet ten times as much women at such times I have never been able to find a special woman through this approach. What I got when I went all out aggressively searching and depending on my own ability to chat up women was quantity but not quality.

In my experience, while you should not neglect opportunities to prepare to find love or learn the best line or approaches for meeting men or women, it is necessary that you get God involved in your searching if you really want to get it right.
