Once again my interest lies in the significant presence of humans in the landscape. This time I am more focused on division - here from there, us from them, privileged to enter or not. The more I have explored the Moab area looking for gates, the more I have discovered things about gates. They have a front and a back. They can be locked or not - or have a lock but not be locked. They are entrances, exits and barriers. They are used and not used. They are openings in the barriers that divide our common inheritance - land. - BP 05/13/08

Reviewed at 15 Bytes

marian boardleynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416711131683177372.post-16409118941898845992008-05-05T21:34:00.003-06:002008-05-14T22:49:32.137-06:00The Perfect Artist's Portfolio ReviewThis article is excerpted from a talk Brian Parkin gave at the Moab Photography Symposium in May 2008 called "Show Time"

Visit the gallery's website and familiarize yourself with the physical location of the gallery and the type of work it carries.

Call ahead to set up an appointment and confirm the day before.

Bring eight to twelve finished images ready-to-hang or frame-ready.

Works should form a complete series which has a title.

Title, number, and sign each work.

The work should be fresh, recently made, and in the case of prints and photographs, the whole edition should have been printed by the artist.

Artworks should be intriguing, have a feeling of being lit from within, and be market priced.

Offer derivative works (prints, note cards, posters, books etc.) at very reasonable prices.

Leave behind a resume and promotional materials with a space for the gallery stamp.

Want the gallery to be your sole regional representative.

marian boardleynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416711131683177372.post-12804248358577691842008-03-23T19:38:00.000-06:002008-05-14T21:38:13.819-06:00Bicycle prints available at the Moab Art Works web storeBrian Parkin's Bicycle series of contact prints can now be found at Moab Art Works Web Store.

These popular 2.25-inch square silver gelatin photographs are individually contact-printed by Brian and are shipped matted and framed to 8"x10". Born Bolton, England he is a graduate of the University of Reading (B.Sc. Chemistry), has worked as a high school science teacher in England and Belgium, and as a book editor at Oxford University Press. He studied art and photography at the Academy of Art University, San Francisco from which he graduated MFA in 1995. He subsequently taught technical lighting and portraiture to students at the Academy. Between 1995 and 2001 he worked as a camera assistant and location scout with commercial shooters in the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Brian moved to Utah in 2001 and photographs fine art for reference and reproduction in his Spanish Valley studio using both traditional and digital capture methods. Because of the continuing demand by artists for film images the studio is fully-equipped with an in-house film lab offering E6, C41 and B/W services. In October 2006 he founded Moab Art Works to better service the needs of local and visiting visual artists, and as a place to see original works of art in a gallery setting. Brian has exhibited in galleries and other venues and has work on permanent display at Moab City Hall. He has promoted more than fifteen exhibitions of photography, painting, and sculpture at his Main Street gallery and co-promoted two abstract art shows (MoabAbstracts). Brian's interests include instant-print portraiture, non-traditional landscapes, and lensless photography. In 2007 he became a US citizen.

marian boardleynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-416711131683177372.post-58427246305258586792006-07-01T16:57:00.000-06:002008-05-14T22:37:39.387-06:00recent developments"Recent Developments" was first shown in July 2006.

The town of Moab and its environs is presently in the midst of a boom in construction of housing and business premises for the use of full-time and part-time residents. As a photographer I am interested in the dynamic interaction of the environment and the people who use it. In my work I don't edit out the presence of humanity with the aim of revealing a pristine (but false) image of nature. Rather I wish to present to you the viewer the juxtaposition of local landscape and the changes that people make to it. Some of the changes are permanent but many of the intermediate stages are ephemeral, here for a short time before being incorporated or transformed.

Recent Developments is on display in Moab's City Hall at 217 East Center, Moab, UT.
