St. Peter's Adult Christian Education 2009/10

Believe it or not it is not too soon to be thinking about our Christian Education offerings for the coming school year. The academic year will start with a five week discussion of "The Shack". The first session will be Sept. 17. This popular volume has a great deal to say about how we see the Trinity, suffering, and redemption.

"The Shack" will be followed by a six week exploration of the book titled "Listening to the Heartbeat of God." As we discuss this volume we will be introduced to several of the central tenets of Celtic Christianity. This introduction will go a long way toward explaining the unique nature of
Anglican theology, and how our church sees the world.

In January we will pick our study up again with the volume "The Lost History of Christianity". This book explores the 1,000 year flowering of Christianity in the Middle East and Asia, and its death around the year 1,000 AD. We will be introduced to the little told story of ancient Christianity in Iraq, Iran, Mongolia, and China.

Our monthly Wednesday evening group will meet each second Wednesday of the month at 7:00PM in the Undercroft. The first session will be September 9th. This year we will explore "Engaging the Word". The book is a volume in the "Episcopal Churhes Teaching Series". As we read and discuss we will be introduced to a way of reading and understanding scripture. Theses tools will help those who want to spend more time with their Bible and come away with more from their reading.

Let's Talk about Recycling

The ECW will host a gathering with speaker Norm Campbell from Recycle Sitka. This gathering will be on Saturday June 13 from 10 to noon. Everyone is welcome. Come with your ideas and thoughts on how St. Peter's can recycle as much as possible.

There will be a meeting of St. Peter's Episcopal Church Women this Friday, May 29, at noon in the
See House. Main agenda item is the June 13 gathering to discuss recycling.

Wednesday School Summer Activities

Wednesday School will be meeting during the summer on June 10, July 1, August 12 and August 19. The gatherings begin at 5:30 with a meal. On the 10th of June it will be Hot Dogs and Potluck. The children will be working on the stepping stones for the Fellowship Farm.
Everyone is invited to participate! We will need all the helping hands we can get!!

Rogation Sunday

St. Peter's will be celebrating Rogation Sunday on May 17.

In the ancient church's tradition, the rector and the people of a parish processed around the boundaries of the parish and asked God's blessings on the fields, streams and forests of that land. This procession took place the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before Ascension Day.

As our procession walks the boundaries of the church property, we are symbolically circumnavigating the boundaries of our parish. This includes the islands of Baranof, Biorka, Chichagof, and the water between.

The procession will take place immediately following the 11:00 Eucharist.

Aoril 25 and 26

The Southeast Deanery Convocation begins on Thursday April 23 and goes through Sunday the 26th.

At 5:00 pm Saturday evening there will a potluck and talent show. The talent may also be from our visiting Deanery guests as well as peices done by the many talented people from St. Peter's. If you can come, please bring a dish that will help feed our guests and come enjoy all the talents.

On Sunday the 26th there will be an 8am service but the 9:15 Family Service and the 11:00 Choral Eucharist will be combined at 10:00am. There will be a baptism, confirmations, installation of new ministries and a dedication of the new archives building in the Alan E. Johnstone Annex.

Holy Week at St. Peter's

Holy Week Schedule:

Palm Sunday;

Our 9:15am and 11:00am services will be combined and begin at 10:00am at the Crescent Harbor shelter. We will gather with our friends from Sitka Lutheran Church and many others for a joint liturgy of the blessing of palms.

Monday through Friday;

Stations of the Cross at 12:05

Wednesday;

Our 5:30pm celebration of the Holy Eucharist will be replaced with an observance of the Office of Tenebrae. This is a moving service of scripture readings and prayers.

Maundy Thursday;

This 5:30pm celebration of Holy Eucharist marks the events of the Last supper and Jesus' giving of a new commandment to his disciples. This is possibly the most intimate service of the Christian year. It is also the service that is most challenging to participate in without being changed.

Good Friday;

This 5:30pm liturgy commemorates the crucifixion and death of our Lord Jesus. We will listen once again to the events of The Passion of Christ.

Easter Sunday;

6:00am. The Queen of Feasts will begin with a sunrise Easter Vigil. This service begins with the lighting of the new Paschal fire in front of the Church building and then moves inside to hear the account of God's saving acts through sacred history. (There will not be an 8:00 am Worship service on Easter)

The 6:00 am Easter Vigil Service will be followed by a "mug up" and coffee cake (if anyone brings one).

The 9:15am and 11:00am services will be held at their regular times. Both these services will feature our traditional flowering of the Easter cross.

MDG Soup and Discussion

Lenten Soup and Discussion

This Lenten Season St. Peter's is joining with St. Gregory's, Sitka Lutheran Church, and the United Methodist in offering a Wednesday noon luncheon and discussion series. Each session will begin at 12:05pm We will begin with prayer, a bowl of soup and a sandwich. Wrapped around this repast will be an introduction to the Millennium Development Goals. Listed are the dates and places:
