Lately, the computer industry has decided to shift its focus to a slightly younger demographic. No, it’s not those technology-loving college kids, or even those teenagers with infinite knowledge of the Internet. Instead it’s middle-school kids – ages six through 12.

The world’s largest PC manufacturer, HP, recently announced the release of its new Mini-Note PC laptop – a small, rugged, light and cheap computer designed primarily for children. More likely than not, HP’s decision to produce the Mini-Note is a direct result of the success of Asus’s Eee computer. Since its initial release last year, Asus’s Eee PC has become a top seller. The miniature device with a 7-inch screen (referred to by the company as a “super mobile Internet device” rather than laptop) carved its own niche by taking aim at middle-school children. But, as is the case with any invention that finds unexpected success, the crop of imitators are now beginning to trickle into the marketplace.

Still, HP is certainly the biggest company to jump into the mini-notebook market thus far. And their Mini-Note does offer more features than the Asus Eee. The Mini-Note has a larger (9-inch) screen and a sleek and sturdy anodized aluminum shell. It has a scratch-resistant display and the keys are coated with a protective finish. The HP Mini-Note keyboard is also bigger than the keyboard of the Asus Eee – making it easier for adults to use too. For additional durability, The Mini-Note incorporates HP 3D DriveGuard, which sends a signal to shut down the hard drive upon sudden movement or shock (like being dropped). Other advantages the Mini-Note has over the Asus machine include Wi-Fi capabilities and a USB drive. The Mini-Note is about $100 more than Eee on the lowest end however, with a retail price of $499 (and more advanced models priced at over $1,000).

Along with providing some competition for Asus, the Mini-Note is also an attempt by HP to crack the education market – one of the few markets the computer giant hasn’t cornered. Both Dell and Apple provide more computers to schools then HP, putting the company in a distant third. HP also recently announced the development of the Teacher Experience Exchange (www.hp.com/go/teacherexperience), an online resource where teachers can access tutorials for teaching technology in the classroom. Along with the Mini-Note, this initiative is intended to help put the HP name on the minds of educators.

By gearing the Mini-Note specifically to middle-school children, HP hopes to boost their share of the education market and, hopefully, experience the same success as Asus. For now, it’ll be interesting to see whether the more stylish Mini-Note is able to take a bite out of the Eee’s sales. Either way, both products will face stiff competition in the coming months as more companies attempt to cash-in on the mini-laptop craze. Intel (who actually beat Asus out of the gate with its Classmate mini-computer) will soon be releasing the next-generation Classmate, which has a 30GB hard drive and, like the Mini-Note, a 9-inch LCD screen. And, rumor has it that Acer will be next in line, releasing its own mini-computer with a lower price than the Eee.

The Toshiba Satellite R15-S822 ($1,549 direct) is not your typical tablet PC. Convertible tablets usually have 12-inch screens and small, lightweight frames. Not so with the R15-S822. This convertible has a 14-inch screen and weighs 6.1 pounds. It's meant to be someone's primary notebook first, and a tablet second—and there's nothing wrong with that.

The Satellite R15 looks a lot like the Toshiba Portégé M205-S809 convertible tablet—only bigger. The swivel screen has a 1,024-by-768 resolution and is large enough to handle spreadsheets comfortably. The screen is bright, making for an enjoyable movie-watching experience. The IBM ThinkPad X41 Tablet ($1,899), our Editors' Choice for tablets, is 3.5 pounds and a pleasure to carry. The R15-S822, at 6.1 pounds, is more likely to be on your lap or on your desk than in your arms.

Like other convertible tablets, the Toshiba Satellite R15 is two computers in one: it looks like a standard keyboard-based laptop, but its screen rotates 180 degrees and folds over the keyboard to allow for pen input. Unfortunately, the R15's single swivel hinge allows the screen to wobble and rock at the slightest touch when it's in laptop mode. The 14.1-inch XGA display is more than adequate, but it lacks the automatic brightness adjustments of the TravelMate C301XCi, and our test system had an annoying piece of dust below the surface of the display. Below the screen are three buttons for rotating the display orientation, calling up the Windows Task Manager, and scrolling horizontally or vertically.

Oddly, sound is central to the R15, with an integrated Analog Devices audio chip and SRS TruSurround XT technology that make the tablet's tiny speakers sound larger and more powerful. Though the speakers are partially covered when the display is folded flat, the sound is surprisingly good once you get the hang of the SRS adjustments. In addition, the machine features an array microphone with echo cancellation technology that makes it almost as good as a dedicated mike, letting you record meetings, dictate to a speech recognition program, and navigate menus by speaking simple commands such as "cut," "paste," and "undo" to the system. If there's a lot of background noise, however, you'll still need to use a headset microphone.

The R15-S822 has three USB ports and a FireWire port as well as an S-Video-out port, which is not typically seen on tablets. This is more proof that the R15-S822 is a notebook first. The system boasts good speakers and a control knob, so you can easily turn the volume up or down. It has a built-in DVD/RW combo drive, though we'd prefer a DVD burner. The R15-S822 also includes a hard drive sensor. The motion sensor parks the heads of the drive to the side once it senses any sudden movement, providing a nice sense of protection.

Lenovo launched the Lenovo 3000 C100, a stylish widescreen notebook combining popular features at an attractive price. The N100 will be available in 14.1-inch- and 15.4-inch- wide models. All Lenovo 3000 PCs include Lenovo CareSM, a software application that helps your computer recover from viruses at the touch of a button, update itself and enable it to easily connect to wireless networks.

Open things up and you really get a feel for how dated this notebook appears. If it wasn’t for the rounded corners, I’d have trouble telling the difference between this and a six year old machine. The 4:3 ratio, 1,024 x 768 screens is the first indication of this. The quality isn’t bad, but it actually feels like a panel from an old notebook, possibly due to the slightly poor contrast ratio. Perhaps panel manufacturers are only concentrating on the widescreen panels now and haven’t updated 1,024 panels in the past few years. 1,024 x 768 is fine if this is only a secondary machine, but if I was using this all day everyday, I would want a little more desktop real estate to play with - that said, many notebook manufacturers maintain that a large portion of the customer base still wants this resolution in a large physical screen.

The plastic used for the rest of the chassis is a finely pitted dark grey, much like you’d see on the inside of a budget mid-80’s car or on a canteen chair. Despite this apparent roughness, it’s actually fairly smooth to the touch. The optical drive is decorated to match. This is a contrast to the lid which has a smooth silver finish.

ThinkPad laptops generally have excellent keyboards. The C100 isn't a ThinkPad, and it doesn't have a ThinkPad keyboard, but what it does have is pretty good. The keyboard is a bit more cramped than those on comparable systems, such as the Pavilion dv4000, but the keys are firm, wide, and very comfortable to type on. The touch pad is a bit small, though, and the touch-pad buttons don't give as much as we'd like; alas, it lacks the ThinkPad's red, eraser-head pointing stick. Above the keyboard sits a lonely mute button--the extent of the C100's dedicated multimedia controls--and one other button, which summons Lenovo's useful system-management and help utility. Both the Inspiron E1505 and the Pavilion dv4000 have dedicated multimedia buttons and full external volume controls.

Lenovo 3000 C100 notebook also sports standard DVD/CD-RW combo optical drive and has integrated 802.11/b/g wireless network connection, a 10/100 Ethernet adapter, built-in 56 kbps fax/modem and 3-in-1 media card reader. Instant On feature of Lenovo 3000 C100 notebook allows playing MP3s, music CDs, and DVDs or look at digital photos without having to boot into Windows XP, and the Express Card 54 slot offering more ‘future-proof’ upgrades than a traditional PC Card slot or an Express 34 slot. The first commercially successful notebooks were from the SupersPort series from Zenith Data Systems (ZDS), which competed with several other companies such as IBM, Toshiba, Compaq and others to notch up a deal with the U.S. Air Force for a contract of supplying 200,000 notebooks in 1987. This made the laptop popular and penetrative to the business and affordable price ranges to the common consumers.

Even though the notebook might seem a powerful and mobile genius of this age, it has its fallacies too. The major ones may be listed below.

Standardizing and weaker parts:

Parts of the notebook are miniaturized parts of desktop computers themselves and hence are weaker in comparison. The miniaturization process also takes a toll on the prices of the notebooks, which are generally higher priced than their desktop counterparts. Also, notebooks count a lot on steady power supply, even though supposed to be mobile, for a decent performance. Though, today technology has improved this negative facet of notebooks.

Durability Issues:

The portability, make, integrated composite structure and design of the notebooks make them more liable to shock, wear and physical damage than desktop computers. And the worst part is that the purchase value of a new LCD screen or motherboard, if damaged, is more than the whole purchasing value of the notebook itself!

Performance Issues:

Desktop computers are generally high performing machines when compared to notebooks of the same price range. This even though is being abolished slowly by improving cutting edge technology, this will not hold true. As energy and portability are prioritized goals for a notebook than absolute performance.

All in all, notebooks are the rage of the new generation today. And slowly but surely, the era of desktop computers is fading into oblivion.
