Drills: Fighting Fire

I dressed up with all those personal protective clothing, 19 kgs breathing air cylinder (on my back) and ready for my fire fighting training in 4 Deck tinned house. All the 4 Decks were filled with pitch dark smoke and Type A Class fire .i.e. solid carbon contents products. We team of four were ready to go for the operation. No. 1, 2, 3and 4, No. 1 is a foreigner (as, he is a ex-British army) and no. 2 is my-self, 3 and 4 are my countrymen, who are also army. Well, the In-charge commander made a plan on the procedure. The plan was like we first move up to deck 4, put our oxygen masks. But, before putting the BA set(Breathing appratus), we have to check pressure gauge so that we won't run out of oxygen when we were middle of something important, face mask so that no skin should come in contact with the heat. Four of us were briefed to do direct search and indirect search. If the flat is narrow i.e. like a corridor, then we have to do direct search. In direct search, we have to make a line and move after our leader.
The leader will be the only one who was using both hands for the search and protection of oneself from the wall or some other obstacle. Both of his hands and legs must do as we told. If we were doing right hand search, then, left hand (with the PP Glove) should feel the hot wall and right hand should work as a wiper for anykind of protection. In case of feet, he has to move his leg making an arch, looking for any casualty. Then, we moved in as the instructor said. Before going down or up to any deck, the fire fighter have to check their gauge pressure. Now, as we were going down to deck 3 from 4, the gauge pressure shouldnot be less than 130 Bar, which will give 19 minutes complete. So, in this 19 minutes, we have to finish our search. No. 1 go down counting the number of steps (must), then, i followed him counting my with a lound annoying voice. If the stair still fits other to come down, then I have to kick the tin wall 3 times. All four of us was in deck 3, we then did our direct/ indirect search depending upon the space of the deck. Nozzles and hoses were dropped down from deck 4 to deck 3. Before fighting fire, we took a quick look of the room with the help of light from the fire. Then, extinguished it and now we are ready to move to deck 2 from 3. As usual we read our pressure gauge, till then it came to 100 Bar except No. 1's, being a giant his pressure gauge showed 90 Bar already. Then, we had to come down to deck 2 from 3 thru the hatch. Before touching the hatch, the No. 1 wet the metal handles and ladders, so that it cooled off. Similarly, we all one by one got down to deck 1 and fought the final fire. Since, deck 1 is the hottest place, we all sweat inside our personal protective clothing but before coming out of the tinned house, we luckily checked behind the door and we found our little dummy gal as a casualty.

There are four types of Breathing Apparatus and they are as follows by giving numbers:

ICABA stands for International compressed air breathing apparatus
SCBA stands for Self contained Breathing Apparatus

The main objective of the equipment is to supply fresh air to the wearer on demand i.e. where he/she is fighting with fires. Fulfilling the purpose is the necessarily for saving fire and property. The main function is to provide sufficient fresh air to the wearer on demand. Again, demand means when he/she i.e. the fire fighter is fighting fire. Its other function is to prevent the inhalation of toxic, poisonous gases and smoke.

Before using the BA, it should be tested. The main parts of BA are gauge test i.e. meter that test the pressure of oxygen in the cylinder and it should not be less that 150 bar. Warning whistle test can also be done, by the way it’s automatic. If the pressure is low, the warning whistle will give a whistle. But the above two tests are enough. Bhimsen Pandit of 28 years, Kathmandu, Sanjaya Shrestha of 32 years, Thankot, Kathmandu and Rohit Paliwal Agrawal of 27, Uttar Pradesh, India alliances such business. These people are succeeding their kidnapping smoothly. Rajendra Sharma was released with NRs. 8,00,000 ransom, Ganish Bihari was released for NRs. 8,50,000 ransom, both after four days of captivity. Likewise, Binod Sharma Neopane paid NRs. 7,60,000 ransom for his release, this was occurred a month ago. After the investigation, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sher Bahdur Basnet at Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) Hanuman Dhoka, Kathmandu informed that Rohit Paliwa Agrawal, an indian national masterminded the kidnapping, Bhimsen Pandit execute the planning and Sanjaya Shrestha, driver in Agriculture development Bank, New Road Branch, job was to drive the victim away and collect the ransom. To executes such planning they have rented three banglowfor NRs. 26,000 a month and to hold the kidnapped in captivity. The rented house ermain mostly unattended and lacks furniture. It has come to know that the group uses the bungalow for both kidnapping and partying said Senior Superintendent of Police Upendra Kanta Aryal Chief of MPCD. The Kidnappers used the victims own cell phone for negotiate ransom amounts. Police have seized four of their vehicles including Santro Car, Maruti Van, Mitsubishi Lancer and a Ford Icon including all of their weapons like pistols and bullets. Police also found five fake private number plates, adhesive tape, rope and various sharp weapons to seize the kidnapping.

Yes, it is also difficult for me to write an official application letter on any kind of leave. Let’s take an example of sick leave or medical leave. Tried a lot and finally, I came up with something. Terrorism is defined in many ways in different notion. For me, terrorism is harmful, dangerous threat committed against civilian in the name of religion, politics and for other ideological goals. It can also be defined as the act of opposing the government with the help of weapons. It is a forceful attempt especially with weapons including IDE’s to Human bombs for the political change i.e. government. These people fight with the government using weapons, always on hunt for the important government official, are terrorist and such movement is known as terrorism. They call themselves Rebellions, Extremist. The main purpose of those so called Rebels are to wide spread arm conflict and to threat millions of civilians.

The incident of 9/11 and Al Quaida, Hijacking of lots of plane and asking for ransoms and freedom of their commander who got caught in action, RUF in Africa, Tamil Tigers in Sri-Lanka, Jammu – Kashmir and so many more. In case of Palestinian and Israel, one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. When a Palestinian terrorist was killed by the security in Israel, then the dead was honored as war hero and vice versa. Osama Bin Laden is a most wanted terrorist for USA but a hero for his kind, fighting for Jihad. For them this is a holy war against all the Christian i.e. devil in west (so called Islamic people gave this name to those white skin). He is known for crashing of two hijacked planes against the icon Twin Tower in Sept 11th, 2004. the day is remembered as 9/11. And again, the bitter war between India and Pakistan for over a very beautiful place called Kashmir. They call it a conflict between hindu and muslim. People from all around the world knows that this is some political issue but both of the country bring this fire out as hindu-muslim conflict. In Nepal, Maoist almost cracks out as terrorist due to the corrupt political status, a huge corruption. His Majesty’s government once declared them terrorist as they are causing threats to those remote villagers, using children for war against Nepal Army, Police. They were blamed that they used poor illiterate villagers as human shield in war and many more blames. Fortunately government of Nepal solved this problem by calling them for their participation in the election. The government gave them a chance to take part as a political party but not a terrorist group. In Sierra Leone, Africa, RUF (Revolutionary United Front) was first established due to the corrupted political status, in the name of helping the helpless civilians like providing free education, supporting poor family, jobs etc. They were like a social organization. But this group starts killing their own kinds; make them slaves for diamond mines. They use poor civilian from a child to a helpless old people. These helpless people purchased their life from them for another day or two by working for them. If they are not in condition of working, they got killed by these RUF. Such injustices, brutality, cruelty, anarchy was finally terminated by UN’s small but heavenly movement against these RUF.

The main conclusion is that how far the terrorism goes, one day it has to come to an end like they did in Sierra Leone, Nepal and many of other fortuned country. The brutality, anarchy won’t last forever because human cannot suffer injustice for that long period of time.

The valuation of population size and economic status has been the major study of man kind. Different philosophies were integrated on above assessment “Population Theories”. One of the philosophies is to link population size with economic level of the population. Since, then, the main source of income was agriculture. A famous contemporary of John Graunt (the pioneer of the population statistics) was William Petty. He developed a political arithmetic involving the measurement of the effect of population in Human affairs.

In the following generation, eminent persons of other fields like science took an interest in population study. Edmund Hally, an astroner was the first to attempt to construct a life table on the basis of recorded death statistics. The basis of his work was the assumption that birth and death rate of a population will always remains the same. But subsequently, he came to conclusion that it was difficult to maintain static or stationary population. Similarly, there came Richard Price, who constructed a reliable life table, but again in the belief that population was stationary. T.R. Malthus, who is considered as the father of modern population theory, observed that it is the natural tendency of population to increase in geometrical proportion unless other wise checked, where as food increases in arithmetical progression owing to the nature of land. Since then, lots of developments in population theories have been made and these theories have given the population studies a new dimension as Demography.The date relating to human population is called population statistics. Population statistics is the oldest of all statistics collected by nations for keeping good estimation of man-power to protect the king himself. In fact, the study of statistics was started as the study of population.

This system construct efficient employment management system for foreign workers, apply identical labor condition and human right as the native workers and prevent absurdity for workers once selected and invited by the government.

Nepal Government is trying and succeeding in winning the South Korean Labor quota after a Korean commission led by Korean labor minister Lee Sang. Ramesh Lekhak, minister for labor and Transport Management discussed with Mr. Sang about this matter since January 2007. After the delegation, Korea is kind of satisfied over Nepal’s development in basic structure to win Employment Permit System (hereinafter referred to as EPS) of Korea. According to Uddhav Baskota, spokesperson at the Ministry said, “We have got positive signals from the delegates to include Nepal into EPS Korea and also quoted that “Mr. Sang is very satisfied with Nepal’s preparations to meet the basic requirements to send its labor force to Korea and Korea will decide it by the end of February. The Spoke Person also said, “If Korea decides to finalize it, then, Korea will invite us to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Korea.”

If this EPS works out between these two country, then it is assumed that more than ten thousand Nepalese will be working there in Korea with not less than Nrs. 1,00,000/- (more than US$ 15,000/-) of salary. As far as I know, Nepalese whoever wants to work there in Korea must have passed SLC exams, secure 60 percent marks in Korean Language test, which cost US$ 30 only and must have knowledge or basic training on the nature of his dream job. Under EPS, the employee must bear visa fees, medical check, air ticket and other like pre-departure arrangements. And the best part is that foreign employee will be equally treated as their Korean contemporaries. The foreigners will receive employment training within 15 days of their entry into the country. EPS allows foreign workers to work in areas of manufacturing, construction. Human Resources Development Service and other non-profit organization will organize training of basic computer knowledge and other educational stuffs.

Department of Foreign Employment Promotion, Nepal - Labour Department in Nepal

Just trying to give some information about this department like its definition, what is the main purpose of this place? how does it work? etc, etc.

Well, this department falls under the Ministry for Labor and Transport Management, Nepal. This Ministry is lead by Minister Ramesh Lekhak. The main purpose of this department is to provide security to those people going for foreign employment through any manning agent who holds the license from this ministry for human resource for foreign employment. Unfortunately, if somehow anything happened to the worker like loosing of hand, leg during his/her duty hour or even death then the victim’s family only hope will be this department. They should come and complain against the manning agent for their injustice.

The whole department is divided into 4 sectors. They are follows by giving numbers.
Sector where Manpower Company (hereinafter referred to as MC) must be registered: In nepali, its Sanstha Darta Sakha, where newly established company must be registered so they can work legally i.e. government license holder and running companies should be renewed every year. If not the company may get seized and they cannot try to employ. So, they should renew their company every year. A team of one section officer, four of junior staff (so called Na. Su. in Nepali), a government lawyer and a peon. But the final decision is always given by the Director General (hereinafter referred to as DG).
Sector where MC get permission to advertised for foreign employment publicly: In Nepali, this sector is known as Purba Sakha, where MC get government approval for public announcement of foreign employment, with their strong paperwork empowered by foreign employers. This permission can only obtain by MC if they are registered or renewed at given time. Public announcement is made through the media, newspaper. Like before a team of two section officer, four of their other desk staff (Na. Su.) and two peon. But as again the final decision is always given by the DG, after looked over by the director for this sector.

Sector where MC gets final approval to the employee for foreign employment: In Nepali, this sector is Antim Sakha, where MC provides every sufficient document of the individual with visa that is ready to go for their foreign employment. After their approval, the individual can easily pass through not only immigration office but also from the labor desk. Like in other sector, this sector also managed by a team of two section officer, four of their desk staff and two peon. DG doesn’t have to care about this sector but one of the two directors, director of this sector have to take care of any illegal movement.

This is the main agenda or streamline of this ministry. So, each of us knew, how this place runs and how important it is in our country. It’s all about saving life of people after all. Isn’t it?
But again, like every other government office, ministry, department and whatever, this is also super corrupt. The staffs from top to bottom are all blinded by bill. Those government staff doesn’t need any document for approval, they can do it for some bills. Whenever victim’s family claims their rights to MC through this department, they were/are/will be dismantled ever and each time by MC with the help of this department.There are still loads of loads of interesting stuff to tell but for right now, no more. It won’t finish within a year even.

In Nepal, most of ex British army start their second career opening manning agency for gulf countries, Europe, America and Asia. I mean human resource all over the world. This ex-soldiers established same discipline, working style in their new working place. In gulf, the most wanted workers are low class work like labor with low salary. So, most of the people who go for foreign employment are those, who are unable to earn Nepalese 10,000/- per month. And, still there are thousand of people go for foreign employment every year.

In Nepal, there are over 700 manning agencies till date. And most of the manpower or overseas or consultant are owned by ex-British Army and I am able to collect the name of the owner or so called Managing Director of only 50 manpower. They are as follows by given numbers.

Poppy day, 11th November and Paying Respect

This day was commemorated on 11th month, 11 hrs, 11 min every part of the world in the memory of those fallen soldiers of World War I and World War II. Soldiers, sailors, air force and even civilians who fought and died for their country. This poppy day is known by different names in different countries. In United Kingdom and Australia, it is know as Remembrance Day. Poppy day in Malta, South Africa, Nepal. Veterans Day in United States. Armistice Day in France, New Zealand.

This day was created by King George V on 7 November 1919 upon the suggestion of Edward George Honey. Some of the countries like UK, Canada, South Africa, it’s a tradition in which two minutes of silence at the 11th hr of the 11th day of 11th month as this is unforgettable time when armistice become effective. In some countries, it is a holiday for government employees.
There is a story behind wearing of poppy, which shows respect to those fallen soldiers of World War I and II and many other wars as well. The poppy’s importance to this commemoration day is due to the influence of Canadian military physician John McCrae’s poem “Flanders Fields”. The field, where poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefield of Flanders after the bloodshed. And, the red color of poppies symbolizes the bloodshed of the war.

There are variety of poppy like poppy curled at the petals with no leaf, white poppy and so on.
The white poppy is a symbol of peace, first produced by Co-operative wholesale Society (CWS) who after allied with Peace Pledge Union (PPU) and took over production and distribution. The wearing of white poppy brings a controversy as a disrespect to those war veteran’s remembrance indicating that those who wear red poppies are in favour of war. But, these are all political rhymes. They are unstoppable, they will keep coming like virus and uses all the source for their own good.

In Nepal, many people still don’t know about this extraordinary day. This even is well known in some of the field like Embassies, people working with ex-soldiers. The place where I work distribute this flower before 11th November every year to all those who work with us, who work through us and tell those stories to them who don’t know nothing about this. Collects funds from them which is then forwarded to British Embassy. The fund, then used for those fallen soldiers family and other helpless people by them.

Impotent Government and abducted Journalist

Nepal government and its seven political alliance shows its weakness when it comes to illegal activities of at least one political party. Birendra Shah, a journalist, was abducted for a month on 5 October 2007.

This incident highlights the insecurity in the country under which people have to rely on.
The disappearance/ abduction of Journalist named Birendra Kumar Shah shows the impotence of the government when it comes to handle the illegal activities of at least one political party CPN (Maoist). This journalist has been disappeared for a month from 5 of October 2007. When media fought against it, Home Minister, Prime minister and Maoist promised to bring out the fact of this unfortunate incident to public. A high-level probe committee formed by CPN (Maoist) take out the investigation. And found out that he was shot dead in Bara District. Lal Bahadur Chaudari, Ram Ekwal Satani and Kundan Phoujdar were involved in the killing of Sah. These Cadres abduct him and his colleague on the context of giving news on timber smuggling. These
Maoist Cadres opened fire at him and buried him somewhere near Sukhuwa.

This incident helps government to focus on the security situation in the country not only for Journalist but for the ordinary people trying to live their insecure life. This kind of incident points the growing sense of impunity that some of the so called political party is enjoying. This incident has drawn much needed attention as this is about a Journalist’s abduction and main reason for media to highlight this unfortunate incident. This incident highlights the insecurity under which people have to live. But, let us raise the question for other common people, too.

Conflict Diamond - Blood Diamond

Also called Blood Diamond, dirty and war diamond as mined in war zone. Civil war, financing insurgency, invading army war effort sort of civil war. It polices war activities. Countries like Angola, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, and Democratic Republic of Congo are diamond mined and still again forbidden countries. These are some of the countries under watch of United Nation. Diamonds in place of different kind of advanced gun, power, dictatorship causing the death of million innocent lives, famishment, insecurity and many more. Rebellion of ages from 8 who was brainwashed and use for destroying lives. These are some of the reason which alert UN to take action against such issue.

The first resolution of the UN is over Angola for mentioning diamonds in the context of raising funds for civil war. UN estimated report of about 20% of toal production in 90’s were sold for illegal purpose and other 15% were conflict in nature. But after UN’s action against such activity, world diamond council report that it is fallen to approximately 1%. Angola is a former colony of Portugal, gained independence in 1975. Too much of independency, unstable government brought civil war and again funded civil war by trading diamonds. Rebellions only source of getting strong. Popular movement for the liberation of Angalo (PMLA) and national union of the total Independence of Angola (UNITA) gave civil war. But, UN found out this source of funding those rebels and in 1998, UN banned other countries from buying those conflict diamond. Today, the country Angola is free from civil war and now holds a strong law for diamond trade. Similarly, President of Liberia Charles Taylor was accused by UN for fueling war between Government of Sierra Leone and Revolutionary United Front (RUF) with weapons & training in exchange for diamonds. And, again UN stopped Liberia from buying conflict diamonds.

KIMBERLY PROCESS CERTIFICATION SCHEME (KPCS): It is a process designed to certify the origin of diamonds from sources of which are conflict free. Its main aim is to prevent rebel groups & their rivals from financing their war aims from diamond sales i.e. preventing these conflict diamonds form other non conflict diamonds. This process is originated from Southern African diamond producing state in Kimberly, Northern Cape, which was approved by UN in 2002 & finally established in 2003.

Love Hope Strength Foundation (hereinafter referred to as LHSF) is a non-profit organization. LHSF was established recently in Jan 2007. The main objective of this foundation is to help cancer victim spreading the message that cancer is curable and each and every victim has right to get cured of this disease.

LHSF perform concerts to collect funds. They achieved their aim of helping cancer victim with the huge amount of success. Their first ever concert was on the top of Empire State Building, then on Snowdon in Wales and then New Jersey and this time they came to choose Nepal and named their mission “Everest Rocks”. The group including 6 musicians led by Mike Peters targeted Kala Patthar, Everest Base Camp (5,545m) for the concert and performed it for half-an-hour. With such good intentions and effort, they collect about quarter of a million fund but still not including the sold CDs and DVDs. They also gave their last concert in Nepal on 30 October 2007 in Durbar Square, Basantpur, Kathmandu with other prominent Nepalese Artists including James Pradhan, Nhyoo Bajracharya and other.

The collected fund was provided to Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital. The fund will be used for the helpless cancer victims and for purchasing essential equipment like MRI, CT Scan, Mammography and so on. Not only us but the whole humanity should express our gratitude to LHSF for such good effort and hope they get every success in their upcoming mission of saving cancer victims.

Bowling

Really, I don’t know any rule of bowling, especially the points. But, it’s very very exciting to hit those tenpins. There is a special way to hold the ball, you will know when that ball come to your hand. Yes, it is heavy. The player has to roll the ball over the runway, called Lane. The lane is very slippery. You will get a special pair of shoes to play. It’s hard to throw the ball. There is a process of throwing the ball. Each player can roll the ball twice called a Frame. You have to first take 4 steps, swinging the ball simultaneous and leave the ball when you are in the flow not when you get hesitated. And guess what, it’s amazing when you take the strike. The strike is that call when you knock down the entire pin. Ten frames complete a game. If you hit all the remaining pins after your first hit, then it is called a spare. The highest possible score is 300.

Let’s talk about the score. If you hit the strike, you will get 14 point for 1st time. If you hit any 4 pins then you will get 4 point and similarly if you hit 6 pins, then you will get 6 points and so on. For first timer, it will be 45 to 65 and on and on and on….Well about me, I am falling for this game, kind of addicted to it. One should try it.

Bungee Jumping

Bungee Jumping was originated in the South pacific by daredevil rituals, where child of ages 8 to men perform a ritual leap known as Naghol to ensure bountiful harvest and as well as to enter the manhood on Pentecost Island, part of the South Pacific island group of Vanuatu. They first build up the tower for ritual land diving by intertwined branches, no nails are used. Thick liana veins are cut to precise length which is bind to the feet to make the jump. Then putting their faith to the vein they jumped from the higher level, head first to the platform. This is from where mind and soul thrilling adventure is born.

As we do not belong to such courageous tribe, we do not use those vines and such tower. Instead of that, we use high tech webbing worn by rock-climbers. Screw-sealed coupling-links protect the bungee rope to an ankle belt. The cable is made out of multilooped lengths of natural rubber bound together by the same material. Ropes are built to stand 2,000 jumps. Jumps are made from Bridges and other high structure and even from high flying helicopter and balloons. Our country Nepal also possesses the 2nd highest bungee jumping in Bhotekoshi. Many of the Nepalese have done this and many more are ready to go for.

Most of my friends are ready for anytime and I am the only one scared of height but this doesn’t mean I am not into adventures. Yes, I am into Rafting. I had raft for twice, once in Bhotekoshi and second time in Trishuli, such a soul thrilling adventure. Well, one day I will go for this jump too and won’t disappoint them. And, my third trip will be for camping and rafting for a week may be. Well, let’s see.
