Sad to say, but, the fundraiser for JRB has been canceled. Swine Flu is the reason.
No, JRB members don't have the flu, but Japanese officials decided they did not want to risk anyone bringing the flu into Japan, so the invitation to play at their summer festival was tacken back.

We are looking for groups to play -- if you have any suggestions, drop us a line, or call us!

KUBB @ the Winery

What is KUBB? It is a game that came from Sweden-- it began at a time when every family had a woodpile. With some logs, sticks and an imagination, a new game was invented. Everyone can enjoy it, young or old, strong or weak; whether you have lots of players or only a few--you will enjoy it.
Here are some pictures I took as Brian teaches visitors how to play the game.

JRB fundraiser to go to Isesaki, Japan

The JRB Band is a three-piece band with a broad repertoire of party Jazz, Rock, and Blues from the 60s to the present.

Drummer Jim Coombs has played and sung blues and rock with several bands in many venues from Springfield to Memphis, including last year’s Memphis Blues festival.

Guitar player Ric Haegg is a well known jazz, rock, and classical guitar player with credits warming up the likes of BB King.

Bassist Bob Jones is from Chicago, where he made a living for a few years as a bass player and vocalist before turning into a University Professor. with a broad repertoire of party Jazz, Rock, and Blues from the 60s, 70’s, 80’s, 2000s.

We play for fun, not profit, but appreciate any help we can get to fund our trip to our sister city. We hope you get a chance to enjoy our shows!

We will be playing at the Isesaki Japan summer festival on August 8th and 9^th.

Nooner @ the Winery

The first "Nooner" of 2009 will be Saturday May 30, 20090 from noon until 4 pm.
Bring a chair or a blanket, a picnic or a snack and a friend or two.
Enjoy Springfield's own band-(back by popular demand) as you sample our new wine!

Last weekend, April 25, and 26, OOVVDA Winery went to Chateau on the Lake, Branson Missouri for the first annual MoWineFest. Not only did we have a great time meeting new people, but we sampled wonderful foods!
If you missed it this year, you will have to go next year! We are looking forward to next year in Branson. (April 24 and 25)

Our next event will be Saturday May 30 from Noon until 4, and back by popular demand, the group Thin Line will play.

Here at the Winery, we not only carry our fine wines, but select beers as well.

At this time, we are busy bottling wines for club members and preparing for next weekend in Branson: the first annual Missouri Wine Fest. The cherry trees are starting to bloom--and the weather is finally starting to act like spring.

Featuring Missouri Wines and Artisan Cheeses, The Missouri Wine Festival is a two day celebration of the National and Inter-National recognition of wines produced in the state of Missouri. Saturday and Sunday, April 25 & 26, at The Chateau on the Lake Resort in Branson, Missouri. The exhibit hall will open for tastings of Missouri Wines from many of the nearly 80 wineries located in the Show Me State. Exhibitors also include artisan cheese makers, chocolatiers, gourmet foods, and fine cigars for the aficionado.

Raspberry Wine

Here is a video I took of the raspberry wine. It looks like the wine is simmering, but it is the yeast causing this action.

It is amazing to watch this, and since many can't be here to see it in person, this is the next best thing.

Fall has arrived, and that means….grape harvest!!

The first two pictures are vingnoles. We processed them on Saturday.

Check the pictures of the process of crushing the grapes—look at those Chambourcins!!

The grapes are absolutely beautiful, and very tasty too. Those were processed Sunday.

Sometime this weekend (Sept 27) we will de-stem and crush the Norton Grapes---

Labor of Love

It’s Labor Day (and this year’ fruit availability is keeping me laboring – a good thing for us all)! Our primary tank has been on two to three week production cycles since early June and we are getting many nice size batches into production for next year’s enjoyment!

Within the next couple of years, we will have a very large selection.

For those of you that missed it, we had a good turnout (and no rain for a change!) for our August 30, 2008 NOONER @ The Winery. The Carney and Guinn Trio was fabulous! All of the musicians we have had perform at the winery have been wonderful!
Everyone had a great time and many chose to make new acquaintances. I noticed many were enjoying our new American Traminette Grape wine. We were marginal on help, so we didn’t get a chance to take any pictures for posting. We are looking forward to our NOONER September 6, 2008 for another great day of listening enjoyment and wine sipping!

Aahhh--fruit!

It has been a while since I posted anything to the blogs....but, we have been keeping busy........making wine, picking fruit, contacting local fruit growers.....

We picked over 500 pounds of cherries--and 450 pounds of Black Raspberries--the wines are now in the tanks settling----somewhere around December/January, these tasty wines will be available.

At this time we are now picking Red Raspberries--this will continue until a severe, killing frost occurs. (My favorite is Red Raspberry!)

Ken has crafted a hummingbird! You have to see it! It is absolutely beautiful.

We have now added art created by local oil painting artist Pam Britton---I sure do enjoy these---

Be sure to check our calendar of events--we have live music on the last Saturday of the month, and a few other events off site, just to keep us on our toes!

No promises on the next date of posting! But, I will TRY to keep blogs current.

Cherry Wine

We are pickin’ and grinning’ !!

North Star cherries make the BEST wine!! While it WASN’T raining, yesterday, we picked and processed 90 pounds, (picture) and then went out again and picked another 30 pounds! That means enough cherries to make 120 bottles of wine. And we are only about halfway through picking, and that doesn't include the cherries picked before yesterday.

After they are picked, we go through and toss the bad ones, then wash and freeze the good ones. This will continue as long as the cherries continue to ripen and we can keep the birds away.

The gift shop now carries BlackShire Gourmet Almonds. Here is what the distributor says:

These Gourmet flavored Almonds are shipped directly from the grower, The Almonds come from a family farm.The farm named, "S- B Ranch" is located Arbuckle, Ca.They are grown on a 10 acre parcel. The trees are hand planted and of the Butte and Padre varieties. The almonds are hand sorted, only grade A are utilized in the operation. Most companies ship grade A overseas! The operation is small in contrast to large commercial farms. They do most of the operation by hand. This assures very high quality, but a some what limited supply. Until recently, these Almonds were sold only by word of mouth in California.

After enjoying the product and believing these are some of the best Almonds ever tasted, I, Shawn Gordon decided to be thier national Distributor.

OOVVDA Winery offers unique items you can't find elsewhere! First we have the wine—the vintner takes care and pride in each and every wine he makes, and it is only available at OOVVDA Winery.

Second, we have added another artisan to our gift shop! Ken is my friend’s dad, and is skilled in the art of intarsia. My photos do NOT do these pieces of art justice—you really have to see them to appreciate the skill and time involved! Ken can do custom work—(we can put you in touch with him. The definition for intarsia is at the end of this blog.)

The Pheasant is about 19 inches wide and 14 inches tall

The Angel is about 9 inches wide by 12 inches tall

The Rooster is about 8 inches wide and 10 inches tall

(Intarsia is a mosaic of small pieces of wood glued together. Each piece is intricately cut using a scroll saw or band saw, painstakingly contoured to give a three dimensional look, then fitted together. Intarsia became popular in the
15th century in Italy. It was used to decorate scrolls, arabesques, architecture scenes, and flowers. The colors are the natural colors of the various varieties of the wood used. All of the woods used are domestic hardwoods. The darkest color is Black Walnut heartwood; Red Oak, Sycamore, and Cypress
tan colors; Cedar, Chinaberry, and Cherry provide the red tones; and Maple, provide the Poplar, Aspen and Ash are used for white.)

Nooner at the Winery April 26, 2008

April 26 was our first "Nooner" of 2008. Not only did we have absolutely beautiful weather, we had "Thin Line" performing classic rock and blues. All enjoyed the music. One couple drove from Kansas City just to hear them play again. I didn't take many pictures---I did manage to get one or two as the band was setting up, and just a couple more before things got going. Bocce, croquet and washers were just some of the ways the guests enjoyed the day.

I am looking forward to the next Nooner (last Saturday in June) as we hope to have some additional varieties of wine bottled for it.

Cherry Trees

It's spring time and the North Star Cherry Trees are in full bloom. These pictures were taken April 21--it is now May 19 and the bees did their job as there is quite a bit of fruit on the trees. Soon we will be picking these beauties for next year's wine!
