The Bash Out Lectures with Dan Gusset and Friends

Dan Pope (aka Gusset) will be presenting an A/V performance of data bent versions of his urban exploring photos alongside a live drone/glitch soundtrack in room three of Bash Out at the Black Swan, Bristol on Sat 20th June (10pm – 6am).

Data bent images are intentionally corrupted digital images where the files have bits altered, cut around, have channels moved or filtered, and are otherwise bastardised to cause all forms of distortions and bizarre effects. Often the results are disappointing fields of black or images that refuse to open at all but persistence and luck can lead to intriguing results.

Like it's close relative circuit bending, where any electronic sound making device, usually a cheap children's toy, is dismantled and its circuitry randomly rewired, it's something that anyone can try. It may just be noise with occasional recognisable hints of what it once was, but there is a beauty to be found in there either by close study or by allowing it to wash over you.

Among the friends Dan has filled the rest of the line-up with will be a Dub Boy & Beavis - Inna Rootstyle, films from public space hijacker and Occasional Cinema organiser Badoni, and beatless soundscapes from Freq.

I've stared a net label. WEFT Records.

"Two sets of thread or yarn make up a piece of woven fabric. During the weaving process the warp threads are stretched from the back to the front of the loom. The weft threads are inserted across the loom at right angles to the warp; the weft threads going under and over the warp threads."

Already available for download are two old Gusset EPs, Silencio and Skidmark, and the great new Housewarming EP by Jilk. And lovely it is too. Just the thing when you are kicking through the 5mm of snow.

More releases are planned. Demos are welcome, please email odd tracks or, if you have a whole EP, a link to gusset at gmail.

In particular I'm looking for tracks for a compilation of world music influenced electronic music. If you have anything that fits that please let me know.

Occasional Cinema, Wed 17th December, Stokes Croft, Bristol

This will be my first proper photo exhibition (ie more than one shot! I've got 56 in there I think) so I'm really excited about this. I'll also be DJing my favourite ominous film scores as well as some of Gusset's lesser heard soundtrack work after Manufactured Landscapes to close the night. Can't wait!

I have had to cancel my appearance at the Oxjam gig tonight due to the technical failure of my laptop. I will be reinstalling my OS when I should be parting for charity, unfortunately.

This is the first time I've ever cancelled a gig and I feel terrible about it.

If you do still go along to the gig sorry I'm not there. I have left a box of free CDs at the venue for people who turn up. Please donate to Oxfam if you take one.

Abstract: From folk stories and fairy tales to science-fiction and fantasy, western literature has always used metaphor and simile as devices to put across an idea or philosophic argument removed from the prejudices that may otherwise surround it. This lecture will analyse “The Matrix” series of films from the perspective of a traditional British pantomime to draw parallels between the mediums and demonstrate how this abomination of poor story telling, worse acting, and designed-to-date special effects could be better enjoyed with cross-dressing, smut and audience interaction.

Toecutter (System Corrupt / V/VM) - Australia
All the way from Australia, Toecutter is the original breakcore mentalist. And it's been a long time since he was last in Bristol. Having shared a house with Candi Hank in 99 and taken his name from the character in Mad Max, the desert sun must have got to him as he became the most frightening and original thing to mash it's way across musical styles in memory. Or is it just "Progressive Progressive Progrsv House"? Either way, he's a long way ahead of the rest of the game. With releases on System Corrupt, V/Vm Test, Digital Vomit, Bruchstellen, Mutant Sniper, and Death$ucker you know this must be quality.

General Disarray (Blunderphonics / Laptop Battle)
Matt Jackson one of Bristol's most talented up-and-coming breakcore producers! He is also one half of the Blunderphonics crew, who have organised many a good night down at the legendary Black Swan. He beat Parasite in the first round of Laptop Battle 5 only to be knocked out in the final by house favorite Defazed. His music is raw and full of energy, and he has also been known to play his live set entirely from a game pad using Max/MSP! See for yourself:

Death$ucker Records releases the secret weapon of the Bristol underground music scene on an unsuspecting world. Gusset have been scaring friends and punters alike since 1996, unleashing aural assaults at breakcore, techno and hip-hop nights around the city. Not to mention anywhere else that will have them, from Brighton to Madrid. They don't fit comfortably into any nice little pigeon hole and have a sound all of their own, but strangely no imitators.

After a promising but stalled start as a low-fi Amiga 1200 toting indie band that made Portishead sound like the theme from My Little Pony they regrouped and concentrated on a purely electronic offering. Their break came in 2002 when Death$ucker head honcho Parasite booked them to support Fanny and Venetian Snares on board the good ship Thekla (the floating venue brought to Bristol by Vivian Stanshall as the Old Verity Showboat). Since then they have jumped at the opportunity to support any act their name sounds funny next to.

This remix compilation brings together remixes of their 2004 self-released Skidmark CDr. With remixes from the likes of Planet Mu's Shitmat and Teknoist, Cock Rock Disco's Jason Forrest (née Donna Summer), Manchester's king of mash-up Hoonboy, V/Vm's hardoff (aka M-Pi) and a collaboration with the Adverse Camber collective's DJ Spazmo. Further offerings include several of their own remanglings of the material, familiar to their live sets, and a track by Zod's Binray that claims to be a remix but neither he nor they can identify what was actually being remixed, it's all too long lost in time. Either that or he pulled an Aphex Twin on them.

Typical comments include, "Why do such nice people made such horrible music?", "Stay away from my children", and "I had no idea you were so depressed/twisted/perverted*"

Even the great John Peel said of them, "Is there any word in the English language more exciting that the word Gusset?"

The crowning glory is the gusset flashing transsexual nurse neon artwork. If you thought "nu-rave" couldn't take any more irony, then you've yet to "Ask Dr Kim"!

Woo! The summer lull (also known as the festival season we didn't get booked to play in) has ended and the club nights are starting up with a vengeance. The illusive powers behind the GoatLab have been deliberating whether they want to carry on running the night, so I've stepped in as co-promoter and moved it to a new venue. It won't be restarting until December but will now have a regular slot on the last Friday of alternate months at The Croft. More news as and when.

In addition to this Gusset will be playing at the anti-war fundraiser Drop Beats Not Bombs at the Custard Factory in Birmingham on Saturday 10th November. The line-up will look something like this, although is still subject to change: Wrong Music Grott Bag Acid Experiment, STIG Noise, Mully(Acid/House), Demon Cabbage (Fill Room Full on Rave!), Teknoist, Vex Kiddy, Shitmat VS Shitnat, Gusset, Comp Winnder Set! and Wrong Music DJ's. All of this will be in the Medicine Bar and there will be loads of other stuff going on across the rest of the complex. Plus the Gusset set will include a rare live appearance by Spokesy!

The official website hasn’t been updated yet. I'll update as things come together.

In album news I had a chat with Death$ucker head honcho Parasite recently and we've finally slated a release date for the Gusset remix album that was now been THREE YEARS in the making. This September you will see a bargain priced CD of remixes from Gusset's Skidmark, CD-R release (last few left on dSWAT). Ask Dr Kim – clever anagram, see? – will feature remixes from The Teknoist, Shitmat, Jason Forrest, Parasite, Binary, Atki2, hard.off, m||m, Hoonboy, Twocsinak and more!

We gave up on the slutty nurse photoshoot idea due to budget restrictions (ie, £0). So instead we will be making a collage of gusset photos. Please send photos of your gusset to: gusset[at]gmail.com. You don't have to be wearing the item, just pose your pants and snap away. Photos will be used under a CC licence and you will get a credit in the artwork. You won't get paid mind, but you get the satisfaction of being able to point and say;

"Check this; that's my gusset on that album cover."
"Get away!" your friends will say.
"No really, look, my name’s on the 'thanks' inside, here," points.
"You magnificent bastard!" they will declare.

ASHTON COURT IS IN PERIL!

Not the estate itself, that’s fine. But the world famous Ashton Court festival is in grave danger! Rising costs have caused the festival organisers to desperate seek additional funds so that Bristol’s best (only!) community festival can go ahead as usual.

The quick version is that the festival is being forced to pay extra due to the various acts of wanton destruction that took place last year. Also, they lost their sponsor. So a cry for help went out to the city to help raise some much-needed cash. Ashton Court is a much loved institution of the Bristol music scene, a yearly demonstration of why this city is special and people all over town are rushing to help out.

Enter Hands Up For Ashton Court, one of a number of fundraising club nights taking place around the city over the next few weeks. Showcasing the best in Bristol’s urban music scene, Hands up holds a line up so good that it will actually make your head bleed.

This virtuoso display of unique and exciting music featuring the likes of Giant Robot, Leanpeople, Sober and Dribbla and First Degree Burn is happening at Timbuk2 on 15th June and we strongly recommend that you attend. The price is a mere six quid in advance or eight on the door, the profits of which will be wholeheartedly and unreservedly donated to Ashton Court Festival.

It’s a heady combination of live acts, DJing and VJing with confirmed appearances from Dub Boy of Ruffnek Diskotek, Drum and Bass from the King Kong Collective, the usual craziness from Gusset and a scratch hip hop set from DJ Rogue and Awkward. Also, we’ve got a couple of surprises up our sleeve, such as Lyricist Hobo, the Bonobo Hobos and First Degree Burn mixing it up a bit to produce a unique collaboration set. Visual treats will be provided by Digiscales, Bristol’s most sought after VJs.

If all goes well, weather permitting, we hope to raise around £1500 for the festival. Gusset have agreed to play at an Ashton Court Festival benefit gig at Timbuk2 in Bristol on 15.06.07. I've always been a fan of the festival (also known as the Bristol Community Festival), and thanks to my parents enthusiasm too I went from an early age. This photo is from 1977 I believe:

The festival has always struggled financially and are very open with their predicament, which seems to have them teetering on the verge of bankruptcy year on year. A whole bunch of people are campaigning to raise funds through various means to help ensure it's future.

The line up for the benefit gig is as yet uncertain but it looks like a highly varied line-up of exciting local talent ...and Gusset. More news as I get it.
