Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) 2010

We are delighted to announce that the eighth Oxford Internet Institute (OII) Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) will be held in Oxford from 5-16 July 2010.

Academic programme
The aim of the programme is to bring together advanced doctoral students engaged in dissertation research relating to the Internet and other ICTs. By sharing their work and learning from leading academics in the field, students can enhance the quality and significance of their thesis research and create a peer network of excellent young researchers.

The 2010 Summer Doctoral Programme will draw substantially upon the OII's research strengths and will involve participation from many of our faculty, together with colleagues from other partner institutions. It will emphasise methodological innovation and good practice in research design, and will expose students to the benefits of discussing their research in a multi-disciplinary teaching environment.

The well-established format of the SDP course structure will be continued with daily research seminars and discussions led by an international group of leading researchers. All students will be asked to present their research to their peers in informal seminars. The programme will facilitate deep discussion of both substantive and methodological research issues, and help students frame their research questions and direct their research. It will also seek to generate dialogue and debate between students from different disciplinary backgrounds on issues relating to the OII's broad research themes with a view to identifying topics for future collaborative research.

Research areas
We welcome applications from advanced doctoral students in any discipline whose work in the field of Internet research engages with the OII's research priorities of Everyday life, Governance and democracy, Science and Learning and Shaping the Internet. Reflecting the disciplinary base of the OII, most of the seminars will draw on Internet-related research in the social sciences, but some may also cover aspects of the department's projects in the humanities and computer science.

Fees and scholarships
The course cost of £1550 covers accommodation at Lady Margaret Hall from 4-16 July inclusive, and all course tuition fees. Travel to and from Oxford is not included in this fee. Lunch will be provided on week days at the OII, and several dinners and social events are also included.

We are currently looking for additional funding to provide support for student scholarships. Further information will be made available as such support is confirmed. Please note that students do not need to make a request for a scholarship at the application stage as this will be dealt with once the selection process has been completed.

How to apply
Up to 27 places are available and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to students at an advanced stage of their doctorate who have embarked on writing their thesis. All teaching will be in English, so all applicants should be able to demonstrate their competence in this language.

All student applications must be supported by one or more of the students' current doctoral programme advisors or dissertation supervisors. References will be requested for all students who are offered a place on the programme. Similarly, students should be able to clearly explain how their doctoral studies will benefit from the programme.

The Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Program "EuroSPIN" (European Study Programme in Neuroinformatics) is inviting applications from students having a solid background in mathematics, physics, computer sciences, biochemistry or neuroscience (on a master level or equivalent), in all cases with computer science skills. Documented interest in research like activities (e.g.demonstrated in the form of master thesis work, or participation in research related activities) is of large importance. Also fluency in English is requested.

Neuroinformatics combines neuroscience and informatics research to develop and apply computational tools and approaches that are essential for understanding the structure and function of the brain.Four partners participate in EuroSPIN:- KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden- University of Edinburgh (UoE), UK- National Centre for Biological Science (NCBS), India- Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg (ALUF), Germany

These four partners are all research leaders in the Neuroinformatics field, but they have complementary strengths. In addition, two associated partners, the Honda Research Institute and Nordita, participate.

Each student will spend most of the time at two of the partner universities, and also receive a joint (or double) PhD degree following a successful completion of the studies. The mobility periods, as well as the courses a student will follow, are tailored individually based on:

a) the PhD students background;

b) which constellations of partners that are involved, as well as

c) the specific research project. During the PhD period each student has one main supervisor from each of the two universities that grant the PhD degree.

During the application process, the students are asked to indicate their preferences with regard to constellations of partners, and also preferred project ideas/areas can be indicated and motivated.

There are excellent scholarship opportunities for students accepted to an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate programme. A stipend or employment contract will be given to all selected PhD students during the study time, which is between 3-4 years.

Modelling of droplet-droplet coalescence

Coalescence of droplets in two-phase reactors such as solvent extraction mixer-settlers is critical to their performance. Because coalescence depends on the thinning and rupture dynamics of a film separating the two droplets, it is a challenge to simulate. Novel numerical techniques will be developed to allow an improved understanding of the phenomenon, and the models will be backed up by detailed experiments.

Coalescence of droplets in turbulent two-phase reactors such as solvent extraction mixer-settlers is critical to their performance. Collisional velocities, which play a critical role in the interaction, are determined by the response of droplets to turbulent eddies. Droplet and eddy velocities will be determined by laser techniques, and used to better understand the physics of the interaction. .

The Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Asia (JISPA) was first introduced in 1993. It is funded by the Government of Japan, administered by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and conducted at various graduate schools in Japan. Its objective is to contribute to institutional capacity building in economic policymaking to promote the sustainable growth of emerging and developing economies in Asia and the Pacific. By training future macroeconomic managers in these countries, the JISPA aims to enable them to better formulate sound economic and financial stability policies needed for sustainable growth and development.

The JISPA targets highly motivated government officials who may serve as future macroeconomic policy makers with the capacity and vision to contribute effectively to the economic development of their countries. Scholarship awards are made on the basis of the candidate`s academic record and work background, mathematical and statistics skills, English language proficiency, and potential for contributing to the macroeconomic and financial management and economic development of their country. The assessment also includes qualities such as the candidate`s commitment to public service, willingness to learn, and openness to new ideas.

Currently, the JISPA is open to qualified candidates from the following countries:
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Island Countries, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

The scholarship covers tuition-related costs and most living expenses for the scholar herself/himself. Officials who receive the JISPA scholarship cannot accept other scholarships. Scholars are expected to devote full time to their studies while in Japan.

The program comprises two tracks: the partnership track and the open track. Because of the strong competition for scholarships, the JISPA is highly selective. In 2010-2011, a total of 30 new scholarships are available to candidates for the partnership track. There is no fixed limit on new scholarships for the open track, but generally only a small number of scholarships are awarded.

Eligibility requirements
Target countries: Under current program guidelines, candidates must be a national of one of the following countries:

Work: Candidates should also currently work for one of the following or related agencies:

The program will also consider officials working in other areas of government that have a significant impact on the formulation or implementation of macroeconomic policy.

Education background: Candidates must have a Bachelor`s degree or an equivalent with at least 16 years of formal education. Names of schools and attending dates beginning from primary school must be listed in the application. In some cases, 15 years of formal education may be accepted if there is an official explanation (a country`s particular educational system or other exceptional circumstances).

English proficiency: Applicants must have an English language proficiency, which needs to be demonstrated as equivalent to or more than an official TOEFL score of 550, CBT213, or iBT79-80. If TOEFL scores are not available, then an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0 can be substituted.

Completed application form: The applicant for the partnership track is requested to apply through the online application system. (The on-line application will be made available by the mid-October, 2009.) The blank application form can be reviewed for reference only.

Official transcripts and official copies of diplomas or degree certificates from all undergraduate and graduate schools: An official copy means a certified copy of the original document with an official seal obtained from the administration office of the university attended. Copies attested by organizations/persons not having notarized/legal bearing will not be accepted.

Two reference letters: References should be from applicants` supervisor at work and/or an academic advisor or professor. TOEFL/IELTS certificate (if available): The TOEFL/IELTS test score must be from an examination taken after December 10, 2007. If a score is unavailable, the applicant will be requested to sit for a TOEFL/IELTS examination prior to receiving a final decision on the scholarship award.

All submitted application material must be presented in English or be accompanied by an official English translation. The material will be considered under the control of the IMF and provided to the relevant school(s) and the Government of Japan as it sees appropriate. Eligibility conditions

1.Scholarships will be awarded strictly on academic merit and only actual results can be used. Forecast results are not accepted for scholarship selection. Only complete applications will be considered, and only applicants who have met the University’s minimum English language requirement for direct entry to their intended program of study at the scholarship application deadline will be eligible for consideration. For Australian Year 12 students the basic TER will be used. Bonus points will not be counted.
2.The University reserves the right to vary the awards, or not to offer scholarships if the candidates have not achieved the level of academic achievement to merit the awards.
3.Applicants from education systems accepted by the University of Adelaide for direct entry to the first year of degree studies must apply before commencement of University studies whether in their home country or Australia. Those who have commenced tertiary studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
4.Applicants from education systems where one year of degree studies in their home countries is required for admission to the University of Adelaide first year degree studies must apply before commencement of their second year of studies. Those who have commenced second year studies at the time of application will not be eligible.
5.A scholarship may not be awarded to anyone already holding another scholarship funded by the University of Adelaide.

Enrolment Conditions

1.Scholarship holders must commence study at The University of Adelaide in 2010. By negotiation, an applicant offered a scholarship scheduled to commence in Semester I, 2010 may defer until Semester II, 2010 if there is a Semester II commencement of their chosen program of study. If the applicant is not able to commence in Semester II the scholarship offer will lapse and will not be available to the applicant in 2011.
2.Candidates are required to enrol in The University of Adelaide as ‘international students’ and must maintain ‘international student’ status for the duration of their enrolment in the University. The scholarship will be terminated if a student changes their residency status.
3.Scholarship holders are expected to enrol in a full time load. A scholarship holder who is considering reducing his/her enrolment load must first consult with staff in the International Student Centre. International students are expected to complete their programs within the duration specified on their visa. The University may only extend the duration of study under compassionate or compelling circumstances.
4.Undergraduate scholarships are available for up to four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The University reserves the right to terminate scholarships of students who do not maintain satisfactory progress. Satisfactory progress is defined as the achievement of a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 5 (out of 7).
5.Where a student fails, or withdraws from courses in a given semester (or equivalent teaching period) such that the semester GPA (Grade Point Average) is less than 5.0 in two consecutive semesters, the student will be deemed to have failed to maintain satisfactory academic progress and the scholarship will be terminated unless the University is satisfied that exceptional circumstances exist.
6.If a student faces exceptional circumstances requiring him or her to return home, he/she may apply for a one year deferment of enrolment without loss of scholarship, provided this is approved under the student visa requirements.
7.In order to make a case for exceptional circumstances, a student will need to provide a detailed statement and independent supporting documentation e.g. a doctor’s certificate etc.
8.If a scholarship holder enrols in more than the standard load of 24 units per year, or in courses which increase the tuition fee beyond what is indicated in the scholarship offer letter, or enrols in courses at another institution, he or she shall be responsible for the payment of the additional tuition fees.
9.Students who complete a three-year degree may apply for an additional year, in an Honours program, but extension of the scholarship for the fourth year is subject to the decision of the relevant faculty.
10.The scholarships cover the amount of tuition fee indicated in the scholarship award letter for up to four years of study at the University of Adelaide. The scholarships do not cover the costs of visas, Overseas Student Health Cover, travel, accommodation, living expenses, books and study materials or any other expenses associated with living in Adelaide or study at the University of Adelaide.
Other Undergraduate Scholarships

For articulating students transferring into later years in Engineering and Computer Science

Up to 48 scholarships will be available for meritorious diploma holders from the University’s articulation partners in Singapore, China, Vietnam and Malaysia who enrol in Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Computer Science programs at the University of Adelaide.

The Adelaide Sarawak Alumni Scholarship

The scholarship is provided to support one student per annum who is enrolled in an undergraduate program of study at the University of Adelaide. To be eligible for consideration an applicant must be a Malaysian citizen who is currently enrolled as a full time undergraduate student in their second or subsequent year of study at the University of Adelaide. Applicants must have completed at least one year of study at the University of Adelaide.

The successful applicant will display outstanding academic ability as well as documented demonstrated commitment to community service. Academic merit will be assessed based on applicant’s cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) for the preceding year.
The Scholarship will provide an annual amount of $7,000AUD, payable in two instalments of $3,500AUD direct to the student following confirmation of enrolment at the census dates for a maximum of one year.

Introduction

The graduate program for international students of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Saitama University offers highly qualified individuals from overseas opportunities to pursue graduate studies and research in the field of civil and environmental engineering. The fields of study include Infrastructure Management, Transportation Planning, Environmental Engineering, Ecological Engineering, Coastal and Ocean Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, Concrete and Material Engineering, Structural and Wind Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, etc.

The graduate program includes courses specially designed for international students, in which class instruction and research supervision are given in English and/or Japanese. Master thesis and doctoral dissertation are accepted in English. Japanese language courses are also offered for foreign students and their spouses. Currently, the number of foreign students registered in this program is almost sixty comparable to that of Japanese graduate students in the Department.

The programs start either in April or October and require an average residency of two years for a Master of Engineering candidate and three years for a Doctor of Engineering/Doctor of Philosophy candidate. Most of the students are financially supported by the scholarships from Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japanese Government and the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship Scheme. Other international organizations such as World Bank and some private and public agencies also offer some scholarships for graduate studies in our program.

So far, 265 students from different countries have already graduated from our program and they are engaged in academic and professional activities in different parts of the world. We take pride that many of our graduates have established themselves very well in their respective careers.

Master of Engineering Program

To qualify for the Master of Engineering Degree, the student must comply with the following requirements:-

* The period of full time attendance to fulfill the requirement of the degree is minimum two years.
* A minimum of 30 credits beyond the bachelor degree is required, including 10 credits awarded for a thesis.
* A thesis based on the research carried out under the supervision of his/her thesis advisor must be completed and satisfactorily presented.

Doctor of Engineering/Doctor of Philosophy Program

To qualify for the Degree of Doctor of Engineering/Doctor of Philosophy, the candidate must have a broad knowledge of his/her field of study and demonstrate distinguished accomplishment and substantial contributions to the advancement of that field through profound knowledge and original ideas. The candidate must comply more specifically with the following requirements:-

* The period of full time attendance to the degree is minimum three years beyond a Master's degree.
* A minimum of 12 credits from course and laboratory works beyond Master's degree is required.
* The student must satisfactorily present his/her dissertation proposal, approximately one and a half years from his/ her enrollment in the program.
* As the most important requirement for the doctoral degree, a dissertation based on original research carried out at Saitama University under the supervision of his/her advisor and with the assistance of the candidate supervising committee must be completed and presented. The candidate must pass a final examination on the dissertation and a comprehensive examination in his/her specific field of study.
* At least one international journal publication (accepted or published) based on the doctoral research is required.

Scholarships

The program is highly competitive and admits only twenty to twenty-five students each year, out of which about seven to ten candidates are awarded the prestigious Monbukagakusho Scholarship administered by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Government of Japan. Another ten to fifteen outstanding candidates are awarded the ADB-JSP Scholarship administered by the Asian Development Bank, JJ/WB GSP Scholarship administered by the World Bank and SPJU Scholarship administered by the Inter-American Development Bank. All scholarships cover tuition and academic fees, a monthly allowance of about 175,000 Yen, and a round-trip air ticket to the awardee's home country. Some grants are available for books and research travel within Japan. The Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Doctoral Course is granted for up to three years based on satisfactory performance of the student. The Master's Degree scholarships are granted for two years. Both scholarships are not extendable beyond three and two years, respectively. The Master's Degree scholarships require the awardees to return to their home countries upon completion of study to contribute to their country's development.

RESEARCH TOPIC

The ESRs will pursue research on the general area of concurrent
computing and in particular on the theoretical
foundations of transactional memory.

Multicore architectures have come to stay; yet multicore is useless
without concurrent programming. The
current parallel programming approach of employing locks is widely
considered to be too difficult for any but
a few experts. Transactional Memory (TM) is a new programming
paradigm which is considered by many
researchers as the future of parallel programming. To understand
properly TM systems as well as be able to
assess them and improve them, a rigorous theoretical study of the
approach, its challenges and its benefits is
badly needed.

This is the challenging research goal to be undertaken by the recruited ESRs.

Terms and conditions

The scholarship covers the entire duration of the PhD programme (3 years) provided that every year the scholar demonstrates satisfactory progress as determined by the University.

If the scholarship is terminated prematurely by the scholar himself, then the scholar shall be responsible for his travel expenses back to his home country.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of competition among eligible candidates. Candidates should be academically outstanding, interested and able to pursue higher education research of relevance to UBD, and able to demonstrate an appreciation of South East Asian culture, particularly of Brunei Darussalam's Malay Islamic culture.

The minimum admission requirements for the scholarship is an Upper Second Class undergraduate degree and a competent or distinction achievement at the Masters degree. Both stated awards should be obtained at an institution recognized by UBD.

Master Scholarships in Computational Linguistics at the University of Zadar

We invite all enthusiastic and motivated B.A. graduates with a strong interest in linguistics, and all its theoretical, psychological, sociological, empirical, and computational aspects to enroll in the new M.A. Program in Linguistics.

Duration and contents: The program lasts four semesters (= 2 years) and comprises four obligatory core courses. Students choose from a large number of elective courses according to their personal interests and specialization area, including for example: theoretical, empirical, and computational linguistics, phonetics, phonology, psycholinguistics, and second language acquisition research.

The MA program complements the classical linguistic education with experimental and empirical research methods. It offers a strong computer and technology orientation, and thus practical and hands-on experience in modern linguistic research domains.

Creative thinking and advancement of teamwork are essential values conveyed throughout the program, accompanied by individual and intensive tutoring involving current research issues.

Acquired skills and knowledge:

The program imparts solid knowledge of linguistic theories and research methods, including:

Degree

To complete the M.A. program, students must collect a minimum of 120 ECTS points (30 points are granted for the M.A. thesis). The M.A. program is completed with a defense of the M.A. thesis.

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need for highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics.

Universities Involved
University groups on Animal Breeding and Genetics within Europe have a long tradition of collaboration. The consortium consists of:

* Wageningen University (WU) (the Netherlands) as co-ordinator
* University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria
* Christian-Albrechts-Universität (CAU), Kiel, Germany
* Agro ParisTech, France
* Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Uppsala, Sweden
* The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), Aas, Norway.

The partner universities together form a consortium with a high level of expertise in every core subject in animal breeding and genetics through which EU can provide leadership for the development of a global training program. Fees and Scholarships

The subscription fees are the same, irrespective of the chosen study track

* EU students: € 2,000 per academic year / € 4,000 for the whole master course
* Non-EU students: € 8,000 per academic year / € 16,000 for the whole master course

The subscription fees include the following costs:

* Costs of the orientation period and accommodation of the students during this event

The Graduate School of the John F. Kennedy-Institute for North American Studies invites applications for the academic year 2010/2011.

Six academic disciplines in the humanities and social sciences collaborate in offering a structured curriculum. The doctoral program is interdisciplinary in its approach and focuses on those social transformations impacting the United States and Canada at the beginning of the 21st century. Areas of emphasis include domestic and foreign policy, economic development, ethnic identity and relations, as well as recent transformations in media, art, literature, culture, and religion. The language of instruction is English.

Applicants interested in pursuing a doctorate with an emphasis in North American Studies must have a completed degree (M.A. or the equivalent) with above average marks in one of the following disciplines: American Cultural Studies, American Literature, History, Political Science, Sociology and Economics. Grants are awarded for a maximum of three years. Continued funding past the first year is based upon a positive annual evaluation of progress.

At the Department of Economics at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University, a PhD scholarship will be available from December 1, 2009 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The PhD scholarship is linked to a multidisciplinary research project entitled "Made in Denmark anno 2050 – The role of firms in globalisation", concerning the export success factors of Danish companies. The scholarship is in economics, but part of a larger multidisciplinary research project carried out in collaboration between the GlobID research group at the Department of Economics and the Centre for Design of Global Enterprise (DoGE) at the Department of Management. PhD students at Aarhus School of Business, Aarhus University (ASB), work under almost the same terms as other research staff, i.e. they have their own office space with a computer, incl. Internet access, email, phone etc., as well as access to secretarial assistance etc. Moreover, expenses in connection with the scientific work are covered, e.g. participation in research courses and academic conferences in Denmark and abroad.

There are also good and well-paid job opportunities in Denmark for people with a PhD degree, both within and outside the university sector.

A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the PhD scholarship the PhD student will be enrolled in the PhD programme comprising a number of courses within the relevant research area.

The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another – often foreign – research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences. In addition, it is expected that PhD students participate in and contribute to the other activities of the department.

Conditions of employment
The PhD scholarship has duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the scholarship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

Starting from September 2009, the Institute of Statistics of the Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, has a vacancy for a PhD student in Biostatistics in the topic of Survival Analysis.

The position is meant to conduct research on frailty models and their application in analysis of data from clinical trials. Despite the fact that frailty models became probably the most popular model to analyse clustered survival data, very little work has been done on the choice of the frailty density. In this project, we would like to investigate further the type of dependence induced by various choices of frailty density, the impact of misspecification of this density, and aim to develop diagnostics and goodness-of-fit tests. This research has direct application to the analysis of data from multicenter survival clinical trials.

Description of the position

As a research assistant (up to 4 years' tax-free monthly grant of about 1500 Euros) the doctoral student's main activity is working on his/her thesis under the supervision of Prof. Catherine Legrand. Apart from conducting research that leads to journal publications and a PhD. thesis, the candidate is expected to follow the program of the Graduate School in Statistics and Actuarial Sciences and he/she can be involved on a small scale into some teaching activities of the IS.

Description of the working environment

The Institute of Statistics is a renowned research centre of high international reputation which offers a very stimulating working environment. It is equipped with modern computing facilities, a statistics library, a vivid visitors' programme and ample funding for scientific travel. At the IS there are about 15-20 doctoral students working under the supervision of about 10 professors, in a variety of fields of methodological and applied statistics, including biostatistics and actuarial sciences. They are integrated into the Graduate School in Statistics and Actuarial Sciences which offers them an up-to-date training in their field via regular seminar series, short courses and workshops, all in English and often given by international short and long-term visitors. A high percentage of the PhD students graduate from the IS and succeed in starting a promising career, be it in academia or industry.
The IS is part of a large international research network. It has numerous academic contacts, including those to neighbouring fields (medicine, agronomy, social science, economy, finance and engineering) as well as collaborations with industry. It is placed in the heart of a modern, vivid and international university campus, in close proximity of Brussels and its international airport, and in short travel distance to other European capitals.

Required qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a degree on the master level in (Bio)Statistics or in related field. This diploma must be obtained with at least distinction or an equivalent grade.
Beside good background in statistics and mathematics, the candidate should have an interest for applied statistics in clinical settings; good programming skills and experience in the use of statistical software such as SAS and/or R is a plus.
The candidate should be highly motivated, think analytically and creatively and have a good command of French and/or English.

Research in the Department of Political Science and Research Methods focuses on the relationship between citizens and their government in multilevel political systems. The position

The European Social Survey (www.europeansocialsurvey.org) is an academically-driven social survey designed to chart and explain the interaction between Europe's changing institutions and the attitudes, beliefs and behavior patterns of its diverse populations. Now in its fourth round, the survey covers over 30 nations and employs the most rigorous methodologies.

The National Coordinators of the ESS are the link between the national survey operation and the central ESS organization. The National Coordinators are responsible for the preparation, conduct, delivery and dissemination of the ESS in their country. For Round 5 of the ESS prof. dr. Kees Aarts has been appointed as National Coordinator of the Netherlands. In the context of Round 5, a number of separately funded Development Projects are being prepared. The vacant position involves carrying out one of these projects, focusing on the effects of the choice of sampling frames on core survey variables. The successful candidate will be required to carry out the Development Project under supervision, and to complete a PhD thesis of which the Development Project will be part.

The position also entails participation in the local ESS team at the University of Twente. Some teaching duties will be involved.

Profile

You have a master degree in Political Science, European Studies, Public Administration or a related field in the social sciences. You have a thorough knowledge of the methodology and techniques of empirical social research, as evidenced in your master thesis. You are motivated and able to work independently as well as in collaborative projects. You are proficient in English as well as Dutch.

Innovation technologies – University of Picardie Jules Verne (LTI),
Amiens, France (www.u-picardie.fr), invites applications for a
full-time research assistantship of three years granted by the French
Ministry of Higher Education and Research (around 1400Euros per
month/12 months per year). The expected starting date is at the
maximum end of October 2009. The selected candidate will be register
as a graduate student with student status and social insurance
according the French law. Tuition fees are practically free (around
300Euros per year).

Applicants must hold a MSc in electrical
engineering (major power) not graduated earlier then one (1) year
prior to the start date. The candidate should be highly
self-motivated and have sound knowledge and research background in
electrical machines and drives. Additional requirements are skills in
