Sewing? Border Prints

I think I may want to learn to sew. I've been doing this b.vikki vintage thing for about a month now, to moderate success... and it seems like the next natural step.

I have a mild obsession with border prints now... or more specifically, graduated/ombré patterns - ones that go from nearly solid to more densely populated or vice versa. And I ALWAYS see great fabrics at thrift stores really cheap.

Also, I know I've neglected this blog, so I'll be posting more regularly in the future.

I finally saw the latest episode of Mad Men and it was terrific! And what's more, Pete Campbell was skimming through an issue of Ebony Magazine from 1963! Amazing!

For readers who don't watch Mad Men: Pete Campbell is a young advertising executive in 1963 Manhattan. His job is to please the clients; he's an account man. He's also, most often, a weasel and generally unlikeable character driven by bald ambition. In recent episodes he suggested to a client that advertising to African-American (potential) costumers may be beneficial, only to be shot down by not only the client, but his higher ups.

In the pitch meeting, he pulled out copies of Ebony and Jet as well, and describes them as publications "for Negroes, by Negroes" in which ad space is available for much cheaper than in mainstream publications for "pennies on the dollar".

By George! Pete's on to something!

But, don't get too excited. This character is nothing if not persistent, but I wouldn't attribute that to any overwhelming progressiveness on his part. Peter Campbell would do ANYTHING to get ahead, including trying to blackmail his coworkers/boss.

Still, what a timely reference. If the writers allow this to progress, Pete has just moseyed into a gold mine. More than likely, it's another impotent attempt on his part to scratch at the rungs of the ladder of success.

Sometime, it's impossible not to feel bad for the guy. After all, he DID invent direct marketing:

Like I need another show to watch. I'm already watching Mad Men and Fringe... I've completely disavowed True Blood (no Season 3 for me)... I suppose Thursday night television is where it's at. And I love Sci-Fi, so FlashForward has me by the balls. #proverbialtesticles (This isn't Twitter, I know, but there's never a bad time for a hashtag).

You can watch episodes on Hulu. Hopefully, this won't get cancelled, becasue I'm already into it. I'll never forgive the network television powers that be for what they did to Kings.

I watch a lot of CNN. And Democratic strategist James Carville is BY FAR my favorite political consultant. His southern witticisms and Louisiana accent along with his pithy insights make him television GOLD. Apparently, SNL and Bill Hader agree:

A Single Man

I've never read Isherwood's A Single Man, but the trailer for the Tom Ford (Yes. THAT Tom Ford, the fashion designer with the amazing/shocking ad campaigns) directed movie adaptation is gripping:

Mad Men's production design team was as the helm for the film's set and Tom Ford's sartorial point of view seems the perfect fit.

The movie is garnering warm reviews from the Venice Film Festival.

From the Associated Press:

"A Single Man" is based on the book by the same name by Christopher Isherwood. Ford, a former Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent designer, said the film is "the most personal thing" he has ever done.

He said the film is not "about being gay" but rather touches on universal themes.
"It's really a film about love and isolation that I think all of us feel, so it is very universal," Ford said at a news conference. "When I see someone who sees the film and says, ' It's a gay story,' I don't even know what they are thinking, it just seems to me a human story."

From Variety:

Ford's largely delicate touch reps a pleasant surprise, especially given his only filmmaking experience hitherto has been overseeing advertising campaigns for Gucci and his own current, self-named line of fashion products. Clearly this is material close to his heart, and the empathy shines through. What's more impressive is the skill he shows at evoking quietly sensual details, conjuring how, for instance, sniffing a stranger's dog brings back memories of George's beloved pet.

Less surprising, given Ford's background, is the just-so exquisiteness of the overall look, not just in the men's clothes (Ford designed Firth's and Hoult's figure-hugging suits and casual outfits himself), but in the interiors and femme costumes, too, for which production designer Dan Bishop and costume designer Arianne Phillips respectively deserve co-credit. The way Charley's pink-and-gold parlor harmonizes not just with her sweeping monochrome dress but also her pink Sobranie cigarettes will evoke swoons of delight in auds for whom magazines like Wallpaper and Architectural Digest are holy writ.

Avid fans of "Mad Men" will notice not only that those pink Sobranies featured in an episode a few weeks before "A Single Man" premiered in Venice, but also that "Mad Men" gets the occasional ugliness of the period's design better. An uncredited, voice-only appearance here by "Mad Men's" Jon Hamm further evokes the series.

The film stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Gennifer Goodwin, and Lee Pace. Great cast. Great look. Great clothes. Great director. Great aesthetic inspiration in Mad Men. I'll add the book to my reading list. Hopefully the movie is great as well. According to early reviews,"in the role of George, Colin Firth gives one of the finest, most affecting performances of his career."

Where should I start with Dita von Teese? I can't say I'm a fan of the bloodless skin and jet black hair, especially because von Teese is a natural blond and it's such a stark contrast to her sartorial feminity - WHICH I LOVE.

The look of vintage dresses and silhouettes - 50s and early 60s day dresses and party dresses, occassionally things from the late 40s, is so beautiful. Dita von Teese has my ideal wardrobe.

Marvel x Tim Gunn

I love Project Runway and I LOVE COMICS, especially Marvel Comics... so the melding of the two is awesome. From the Associated Press:

Tim Gunn is taking his fight against fashion crimes from the workrooms of "Project Runway" to the pages of a comic book. And, wow, does he get to wear a power suit.

The "Loaded Gunn" story line - to save an exhibit of extraordinary superhero clothes from a cadre of villains - is part of a book that reintroduces a group of Marvel's high-fashion "Models Inc." comic characters from the 1960s.

"It's a little `America's Next Top Model' - without Tyra (Banks) - and a little `Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,'" says Marvel editor Charlie Beckerman.

The Gunn project evolved on a whim, but it turned out Gunn was a childhood comic fan and a good sport, Beckerman says.

Gunn says the experience has been "the most bizarre thing."

"It's exciting and exhilarating, but bizarre. When they came to me, I said, `I'm about to turn 56 years old. Are they crazy?' But it kept revealing itself in layers and next thing, I'm wearing the `Iron Man' suit. I was dumbstruck."

Personally, Gunn says he always fancied himself more of a Batman type, but he's pleased with the result.

"Most superheroes are fighting the same thing - good vs. evil - but who's taking on crimes against fashion? Me!"

The biggest offense, hands down: clothes that don't fit properly, Gunn says. And, if he had the truly incredible power to remove one item from closets all around the world, no question it would be Crocs.

"It's the No. 1 fashion crime item - and I see it a lot," Gunn says.

I love Mad Men. That is no secret. So, of course, I wish I could have been in NYC for the Season 3 premier (btw, Season 3 is great, so far). The premier was aired live, outside in Times Square and people showed up in vintage suits and dresses - costumed as their favorite Mad Men chracters. Sounds like a darn good time.

Laura from Project Runway was there! Makes sense. She did love a vintage silhouette!

The guy who writes it, Gabe, is probably the funniest person on the entire internet. I send lots of tips to Videogum and hardly any of them get used. The Rachel Zoe Project is back! Awesome. Even though she wears fur (yuck!), I can't get enough Rachel Zoe. She has the world's best job and she talks in an LA robot voice. What's not to love? And she gets Brad Goreski as an employee. I want to put him in my back pocket, but he probably wouldn't fit.

Remembering Aaliyah

Aaliyah died the summer before I entered high school. For the first day, I pressed my hair, Aaliyah style, wore a tight shirt and baggy pants, and talked about Aaliyah all day. I knew the words to all of her songs, the moves to all of her dances, had posters, CDs, and recorded her videos on VHS whenever they came on TheBox (throwback!).

I loved her music sooo much and still do. If she were still alive, I'm sure she'd be the top female singer in the world.

Aaliyah died 8 years ago yesterday and would have been 30 years old if her light hadn't been prematurely dimmed.
