France 09 Part 6

Wed. We where to travel to a new venue, this was chosen by Val Ras team, it was only half a mile away, but they all turned up to ferry us to the site...The local Riding school!! we were to play on the carpark, a mixture of sand, then a little grit, lorry tracks and grass and weeds. May we never complain about a piste in UK again.

Yes, even the zoo was there.

The match was a knockout mellee, some teams had two English and one French or visa a versa.We were warned before hand that there was no shade and it was very hot. The games lasted all afternoon with semi's being played around 5. We where all cheering on Hazel, Maggie and Jean Francois, he was quite a character. The sun burning so Jeff became the caddie for Hazel and supported the umbrella to keep her less hot. They won the semi's.

The final was against two french guys and Barbs and Hazel, Maggie and Jean Francois it was long and hot.

France 09 Part 5

Monday, again the morning was free but we all met up just after lunch to go to Serignan, this club was only a 15 min drive and we were all soon playing boule. Today was a triples knock out two French to one English. Carolyn's partner from last year popped in to say hello but didn't play. Pauline and Babs made it to the final on opposite teams, Babs team won.

Dinner was in 4 parts plus wine, lovely...Maccaroni and beef being the main course very tasty.

Tuesday.. To day was the doubles day at the site, it was very hot and a couple of teams dropped out but the final winners where Jan Price and Michell.

The evening was all our own so tonight is ABC plus Ray Bar B Q

We all prepare different starters, main courses and sweets. Margaretha, Benny and I made the trip into Val ras to buy the meats and fish and fresh veg.

We invited Jan and John for the evening which they accepted and arrived just as the food was ready. Cooked by your favorite chef.

Saturday we played on site. This was a triples mellee again lots of fun and quite hot.

Dinner followed at the site resturant. We were all asked to go watch the cabret spot which was to follow afte dinner. Surpize, Surprize, I think we all now know who the main preformers where.

Sunday was our day of rest, some went for walks and some made there way into Val Ras, either to see the major Rugby tornement on the beach or to have a light snack in one of the local resturants

France 09 Part 3

Day 3. This saw us on our way to Vendres, here we mixed with the locals in triples ie two of us and one of them. The competition was basically a knockout with a main and plate...Jan and I made it to the final of the main. Slight problem it was time to eat so cancel the final and let set up the tables on the piste instead.

The meal was a traditional cassollet cooked in a very large pot, alongside were metre long sausages grilled before your eyes.

Entertainment was provided by the local accordionist. He was very good.

Tuesday. Day 1.

Flight, and coach all on time and we arrived on site just after 4 on Tuesday. Nice of them to leave a drop of Rose' in the fridge.

We all met up a John and Jan for smally eats and drinks. We also met up will all of the other groups in our party. Except for the group from Lordswood, we all knew each other very well. Good start to the holiday

Wednesday Day 2.

Free morning, some of us took a dip in the loveley pool, others spent the morning walking along the beach or testing out the onsite terrain.

PM. our first trip away, We all went to Lespignan. This is a very tight terrain, no competition but some very good games against the locals.

Dinner was provided at The Peoples house, ( Village Hall) we all had a good meal, plus everyone was given a bottle of wine to take home.

This year Carolyn won the Raffle, a lovely new set of Black boule.

A couple of days to go before we all fly south for the second years trip to Valras Plage.
The weather forecast looks very good average temps around 24 - 26 no rain in sight.
Eight matches against our french friends, a couple of glasses of wine just to lubricate the joints. Enjoy yourselves even IF you get beaten. See you all at the airport early Tuesday morning.

Jane Langley is the co-ordinator for 'Talk', and was very delighted to come and collect the cheque, and have a go at Boules (with a fast learning curve!) and have lunch with us all. Thanks to Carolyn as well.

New boules club in Guildford

Benny and Margaretha, David and Hazel, spent a great afternoon at The Guildford Tup. This pub has just built its own three piste terrain at the back of the courtyard.
Today they held their first open sponsored by Ricard.
First they held a French market, followed by Ricard tasting and finally a boules tournament.
Although both teams played very well they where beaten by some very good French teams from the London region.
Francois the owner hopes to make this a regular venue.

It is with very great regret to announce the death of Enid.
She was a very charming lady, a great pointer and she always had a smile and nice word for everyone.
She will be greatly missed by us all, our sympathies go to John.

Amities Boules Club Charity Day 2009

Saturday saw the club holding their annual Charity Day, this years Charity it "Talk, Talk" and was sponsored by Val. The organisation helps stroke victims relearn to talk and help hold conversations.
We held a raffle and bring and buy stall, followed by a melee entry fee £1 donated to the Charity.

This years winner of the melee was Mike, closely followed by Jan and Benny equal 2nd place.
We raised just over £230.00 which will be handed over at a later date.

Easter Saturday

Margretha has just informed us that on Saturday, our friends from Jersey, Fred and Elaine Paisnel made a flying visit to the club. They are holidaying in the area and just dropped in for a couple of games and a quick chat.
They hope to be visiting Adur on Sunday.

Borden Triples

Hazel, Val and David went to Borden on Good Friday to take part in the Open Triples.
Val says they where all soaked to he skin, but it was an enjoyable day.
After a poor start, the intrepid trio won the plate consularge and came away with lots of wine between them.
David and Hazel will be on the move again on Easter Monday this time taking on the open doubles at Crondall. Best of Luck to both of them, and also any other of our club who will be making the trip.

SCPA Winter Doubles Finals
The Winter Doubles Finals was held at Burridge on Saturday, 28th March. The top team after the 5 winter rounds was Harrison & Ashley. Mike & Mary were unlucky not to qualify but were given a reprieve when Tomasz & Ben had to withdraw. These two teams met in the first match of the morning and Mike & Mary upset the form book by winning 13-12 (having led 12-5!). Harrison & Ashley recovered well to win their next two games and win their league. Steve & Karen won all three of their games to top the other league. In the semi-finals, Steve & Karen beat Mike & Mary and Harrison & Ashley comprehensively beat the Summer Doubles Champions Richard & Dave. After a very one-sided final Harrison & Ashley were worthy winners of this year’s title.

For all of you asked. Ian and I won our match last Saturday 3 games to 0.
Last night we played again we won this 2 games to 1, lost the last game 13 - 10.

We have now won 9 out of 12 games, this should get us into the finals, but we do have 3 more games to play at Hampshire Rose next Friday.

ABC played Lordswood PC this afternoon for a place in the quarter finals.
ABC started really well in winning the first two triples.
Ingrid and Tony lost the first doubles, David and Hazel won the next doubles, Ian and Jeff were 12 - 12 in the last double, Jeff had the shot for match but missed...
We then lost the next two triples.
Finally losing the match 4 - 3.
Thanks to Lordswood for giving us a great game.
I would also like to thank everyone who stayed and supported us, include Roz and Lynn who came all the way from Hampshire Rose to give their support.
Also thanks to all the team for a great run, you all deserve a BIG THANK YOU and WELL DONE.

Lamb open

Ian and I travelled down to Burridge on the Sunday after Christmas for the Lamb Open.
The weather was freezing all day, making the piste rock hard in the morning and late afternoon, around midmorning to early afternoon it was wet and sticky.
We didn't get to any of the finals, but it was nice to be in the open air all day.
Our best score was a win of 13 - 2 and our worst score was a loss of 13 - 10. Could have been a really good day if we had had a little piece of luck now and then.
