When you reach Sudder street ., get a room anywhere; choices may be limited depending on the

season. Put your bags down and recover from sensory overload. When you’re ready, scout out different locations, rooms, and prices. This guide has recommendations (see below), but guidebooks like the

Lonely Planet have more descriptions and maps. If you aren’t happy where you end up, you can always relocate.

Some good questions to keep in mind while trying to find shelter include:

How many people share the bathroom?
Can I receive phone calls?
Is there a commons area?
Is there a shared refrigerator?
Are the mosquito nets?
Do you get hot water for showers?
Is food nearby?
Can I store my belongings in a locker?
How quiet/noisy is it?
Keep in mind that rooms on the ground floor are more likely to have problems with rats and flooding, though they may be cheaper.

Although the mentioned establishments are around the Sudder St. area, you are not restricted to

stay there. It is possible to live in an apartment (flat) or in a room of someone’s house; usually you hear about these opportunities through word of mouth at the Mother House. The Sisters might also be able to help you.

An important thing to remember is that the place you stay can do a lot to affect your health and

happiness. If privacy is an issue, or if you like peace and quiet (especially when you are sick) you may want to avoid the dorm-style living.

• Monica House: This is managed by St. James Church. Its a great place to stay and is across the street from the Mother House. It has a family atmosphere, and breakfast is included with the room rate. Lunch and dinner are served on location for about 35 rupees each. The dorms have 5-6 beds per room; there is one men’s room with four beds. It’s clean and nice with boiled

drinking water (be careful though), mosquito nets, and weekly bed changes.

• Hotel Maria: This is located on Sudder St. and Stuart Lane. The grounds are better than most, with a small convenience store attached, and the rooms decent. Take a shower on the open roof and have parties on the roof. Rs 150 for a single Rs 350 for a triple. Phone 22520860

• Salvation Army: This is across from the Fairlawn Hotel on Sudder St. It is a popular tourist

hostel with international travelers. The dorm-style rooms do not offer much privacy, but the

common rooms are nice, there are also doubles and triples. They also have trustworthy water

filters, so you can save money there. A good way to meet other travelers from across the globe.

• Modern Lodge: This has been a long-time favorite for long term volunteers. Most rooms are

doubles or triples, with a few quads or singles. Not all rooms have attached bathroom (and toilets

are Indian style). The rooftop is a nice place to relax, and is frequented with nightly gatherings.

Remember to be nice to the doormen, Abdul. As low as Rs. 130 for a double Rs. 300 for a triple.

• Connie Catterjee House: This is just for women. The small, shared rooms can be cramped, but nice. It’s located north of Shishu. Bhavan on AJC Bose Road, so its far from most of the

volunteer activity. Good phone and laundry service. If interested, inquire at the Mother House.

• YMCA (42 S.N. Banerjee Rd.): This establishment is very different from the YMCA on

Chowringee Rd. They even have a basketball court. You may need roommates as well as a

referral from the Monica House (Fr. Manuel) to get in. Directions: go north on AJC Bose Rd.

(Lower Circular Rd.) To the big intersection with a turquoise mosque across the street. This is

Banerjee Rd.; turn left and walk 15 minutes paying attention to addresses. Look for the

triangular YMCA insignia. It is best to arrive before 5 pm. Most likely only open to men. Phone

• Paragon Hotel: Next to Hotel Maria, has same ownership, similar prices and lodging as Hotel

Maria and Modern Lodge. Has a large roof top (host to wednesday night gatherings of

volunteers) and a nice foyer on the ground floor. They have singles, doubles, triples, and dorms.

A favorite in 2001 and again in 2003, 2004, 2005. Phone 22522445.

OOTY
In Ooty we arrived late and headed straight for the Reflections Guest House - got a room for 500Rs and although it had a great view of the lake and nice bedding the room was infested with flies, the hot water was only available from 6am-9am, (no good if you sleep in!) anyway- the next day when we enquired at the:-

HOTEL CITY PALACE (North Lake Road) which was next door but one to Reflections, the building is painted a bright orange colour, for 500Rs we got a much nicer double room, TV, 24hr hot water, a fan and a v.decent restaurant.

VELLORE
There didn't seem to be many options in the LP Guide for Vellore and the first rooms we went to see were far too expensive (800Rs+) - anyway quite near to the hospital we found VIMAL ANNEXE (No.48, Sukkaia Vathiya St. (in a side street opp CMC) it is newly opened, the v. clean room had a fan, tv, good shower and was 400Rs for 24 hours - we even got a part refund because we had the room less than 24 hours - for food don't miss the Hotel Arathy round the corner (restaurant not rooms!) it was one of our favourite places to eat in India.

Location and climate
Vellore is 200 metres above sea level, situated 140 km South West of Chennai (Madras) and 200 km East of Bangalore. Vellore is on the plains surrounded by low, rocky hills. Temperature ranges from 20°C in the winter months of December-February to 43°C in the summer months of April-June. It is essentially a dry climate, rainy and humid only at the times of the two monsoons: June-August and October-December. The temperature in November will be between 28-32°C.

Transportation to Vellore
The flight ticket is part of a group booking made already one year before departure. It cannot be changed and the seats are pre-booked. If for health reasons you need a special seat please do contact Birgitte Gantriis before the tickets are issued.

Insurance is included in the course fee. Please read the conditions thoroughly and note in particular that chronic diseases and diseases that have been treated within 2 months before departure are not covered.

The airport closest to Vellore is in Chennai. An airport bus will take you from the airport into the city from where you can take a taxi to either the Central Railway station, or to the Bus stand at Koyambedu Junction. Train and bus services to Vellore are frequent, cheap and quite satisfactory (Non AC). Either journey takes about 3 hours. If you choose to travel by train you should buy your ticket to Katpadi, which is the railway station that serves Vellore. Auto-Rickshaws, buses and taxis are available at the station for the 13km journey to the Christian Medical College Campus. Buses from Chennai (Madras) will bring you right into the centre of the town. The most convenient, but most expensive transport from the airport to Vellore is by taxi. Cost Rs 1500 (Non AC). However CMC will arrange to pick you up from Chennai.

Vellore town
Vellore is the headquarters town of the Vellore District. Its population is about 200,000. It is a marketing centre for a fairly prosperous agricultural area. The streets are lined with small shops and crowded with people, cyclists, buses, lorries, livestock and cars. There is an interesting and large Hindu temple and a 13th Century fort in the centre of town, which played an important part in Indian history especially during the British rule.

Language
Tamil is the language spoken by most of the people in the state of Tamil Nadu where Vellore is located. The other South Indian languages of Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada and the national language of Hindi are spoken by others. However, many south Indians including shopkeepers know English. Visitors, who speak English, should not have too much trouble making themselves understood.

Postal, telephone, telegrams
There are branch post offices on both the hospital and college campuses, which are open every day except Sundays, and national holidays. The main post office in the centre of Vellore provides 24-hr. service. Mail delivery is, by and large, reliable. The postal address is Community Health Training Centre (CHTC), CMC, Bagayam, Vellore 632002, India. Mail is delivered directly to the CHTC.

Clothing
Dress is casual. Suits and ties are not worn. Generally, men wear short-sleeved shirts, long pants and sandals. For women, dresses with or without sleeves, skirts and blouses, Punjabi pants and tunic (kurta and churidar) or sarees with sandals are appropriate. Cotton is cooler than synthetic clothing. Cloth shops and tailoring shops abound, and it is comparatively inexpensive and quick to have clothes stitched to size. Women who wish to buy the Kurta and churidar could buy good quality ones in Vellore.

What to bring
There are a few items that are not readily available here or are expensive, that you may wish to bring with you: suntan lotion, a deodorant, facial tissue. It is advisable to have a good torch / flashlight for night walking and for unannounced power cuts which may occur. All toilet articles such as soap, powder, shaving cream, blades, good mosquito repellent, shampoos, sanitary napkins and tampons, etc are ready available. Black and white film and colour films are available but it is good to bring whatever kind of colour film you use. The only medical instrument that needs to be brought is a stethoscope. Electricity is 220 volt, AC, 50 Hz.

If you bring a laptop it is on your own responsibility. It can be locked in a cupboard in your room. Bring or buy locally a lock for the cupboard. There is no Internet access in the guesthouse, however the department has arranged for Internet access in the CHTC, This facility will not be available during class hours. Due to safety reasons one cannot use floppy disc, CD ROM or flash drive.

Bring a calculator – or buy one locally. Eventually bring a small spiral heater in order to be able to fix a cup of tea or coffee in your room.

Banking
The State Bank of India has a branch across the road near the CHTC. Traveller’s cheques cannot be cashed in this Bank. One needs to go to other banks in Vellore town and it can be time consuming and frustrating at times. It is advisable to cash your travellers cheques in Madras before you leave the airport. Foreign cash (US dollars and pound sterling) can be converted in Vellore. (Not Danish Kroner). American Express traveller’s cheque can be cashed in Vellore. Indian rupees could be cashed from the ATM, Centurion Bank, Bagayam.

Few tips when travelling to the villages
Dress as for college campus. Greeting a person is with folded hands and not by shaking hands. Remove your shoes when entering a house. Sandals are convenient while travelling to the village. Villagers may offer food when you visit them. Avoid any cold drinks. Hot tea or coffee is safe. Coconut water is safe and nutritious. Community does not object to photos being taken but get their permission. Introduce yourself and indicate the purpose of your visit. They may enquire about your customs and practices. Women may be offered flowers to wear on the head. Accept them or request them to put it on for you.

Before you leave Copenhagen, please ensure that you are Epi-Info literate. This will be vital in the fieldwork during your stay in Vellore.

Getting to Yuks0m

To get to Yuksam, you must arrive at Siliguri, West Bengal via rail or air, before taking a jeep or taxi to Jorethang.

Via rail
The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (West Bengal), (140km). It is well connected with major cities of India such as Calcutta, New Delhi and Guwahati.

Via air
The nearest airport is Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal, (155km, approx 6 hours). There is a daily flight from Delhi and Calcutta.

Via road
Yuksam is well connected by road via a shared jeep or reserved taxi.The two main entry points to Yuksam and Khangchendzonga area is from Geyzing via Pelling (40km, approx 2 hours) and from Jorethang-Legship via Tashiding (65km, approx 2-3 hours).

Yuksam has a wide range of places to stay, ranging from the remarkably cheap (but very basic) trekkers hut to the top-end hotels. Most places are decent and spotless and have a shared or private attached bathroom. Prices range from 50 Rupees to 1400 Rupees per night (not inclusive of food). It is important to enquire about the reliability and cost of the hot water and heating, especially during winter.

For people looking for adventure, one can pitch a tent at the camping grounds available. Both camping grounds have shared bathrooms. You may need a tent, sleeping bag and cooking equipment (this might not be necessary as food is cheap and easily accessible).

Yumthang Valley tour
Almost all tour operators have 2 or 3 day package tours to Yumthang Valley starting at 10 am everyday from the city center. Mahindra Max with a 4-wheel drive is used for this travel. You can either book the whole Max or share it with other tourists. On a shared basis, Dreamland Tours and Travels (Sudeep – 9932893328 / 03592-204115) charged us Rs 700 per person for travel, accommodation in Lachung (very basic) and 4 basic meals (lunch and dinner on day 1 and breakfast and lunch on day 2).

The first day is spent traveling from Gangtok (10 am) to Lachung (6 pm). The second day is the actual trip to the Valley and back to Gangtok in a 2 day package. You need to pay extra to the driver to go to Zero Point (Rs 150 per person) and Katao (Rs 150 per person).

Tsongo lake and Nathula Pass
Again all tour operators have a one day package to these places. I don’t have much information as we didn’t do this part. But from what I heard, Nathula Pass is open only on Wed / Thu / Sat / Sun. And Tsongo lake is a must see (it is only 40 kms from Gangtok).
