Neglecting it may make your skin age considerably faster. Deficiencies of certain nutrients, such as vitamins A, B-Complex, and essential fatty acids can impair the skin's ability to renew itself. In today's world, your skin is at risk from the accelerating number of free radicals in the environment. Harsh winters and too much sunlight in the summer add to the acceleration of aging.

Fortunately there are "superhero" nutrients-vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients-that come to the rescue and limit the amount of harm to skin cells caused by oxidative damage. The following Shaklee nutrition products will provide the nutrients to build healthy skin cells from the inside. Approaching skin from the inside through nutrition, and then outside by using products like our skin care system and our natural cosmetics will yield significantly younger, healthier TOTALLY BEAUTIFUL skin!!

Our Nutrition Program for Healthier, Younger Looking Skin:

a) Our Complete Supplements:

This revolutionary daily strip of vitamins doesn't just provide the clinically proven foundation for a longer, healthier life; the nutrients also do wonders for your skin. The multivitamin provides the proper balance of all nutrients, including important trace minerals. Your body cannot produce minerals, they must be provided in your diet. The B-COMPLEX in reduces stress reactions in the skin, like canker sores and shingles. Lip problems, especially cracks at the corners of lips, indicate B-complex deficiency. Is your skin too oily or to dry? B-Complex will help balance your skin. The VITAMIN C will help with collagen construction and tissue integrity. It helps your body resist infection. Sufficient vitamin C will help with skin resiliency. Environmental pollution and stress destroys vitamin C and a deficiency in vitamin C can increase allergies, contribute to wrinkles and sagginess and other skin problems The VITAMIN E delays the aging process, and de-activates free radicals. It tones muscles, improves elasticity, increases circulation-protects cell membranes, assists body in utilizing oils, and relieves itchiness. Leathery skin may also be improved by Vitamin E.The CAROTOMAX provides a complex of carotenoids, including Beta Carotene, which is the precursor for Vitamin A production---no one has healthy skin without sufficient Vitamin A. Beta Carotene is the best way to get Vitamin A because it is stored in all the cells in the body, not just in the liver. The OMEGA 3's help provide essential fatty acids. Your skin needs these oils to stay soft and supple, especially if you are on a low fat diet. Omega 3's have also been found to be very helpful with psoriasis and other skin inflammations. (with Psoriasis considering supplementing with our omega 3 supplement in addition to the complete vitamin strip). For starters, we live in a high-stress, high-toxic, highly-processed, fast-food, over-medicated, over-farmed, nutrient depleted modern world.

Today's refined high-fat, high-sugar diet alone contributes to major nutrient deficiencies that leads to irritability, stress, lethargy and sleep disorders. In addition, more than 80 million pounds of antibiotics are consumed each year in the U.S. and not just from prescription drugs! Residues of antibiotics are detected in livestock, farm-fed fish and commercial eggs. Antibiotics kill friendly bacteria in our intestines. We need these friendly bacteria help our bodies to absorb nutrients - especially B-vitamins. Such deficiencies can result in a variety of nervous and digestive conditions.

Our nation's soil is often nutrient depleted from over-farming and poor crop rotation. In one U.S. government survey, levels of essential nutrients in crops have declined up to 68% over a four-year period. And when you consider that over 90% of the population doesn't eat the way the Food Pyramid Guide suggests, the need to supplement one's diet with high-quality whole food supplements becomes obvious.

In determining a good nutrition program you'll want to factor in unique lifestyles and different age groups as everyone faces their own dietary and nutritional challenges. For instance...

Are you indoors most of the day? Invalids, shift workers and computer "nerds" often need more Vitamin-D. Most fair skinned people need at least 20 minutes of direct sunlight at noon on 25% of your total body surface each day to maintain adequate blood levels of Vitamin D. If you're mostly indoors, then our Vita-lea multivitamin which contains 100% of the RDA for Vitamin D, as well as 22 other essential vitamins and minerals at clinically proven levels, would be a good choice for you. For more information on the world's most complete multivitamin/multimineral go HERE

Are you an athlete or do you do physical labor? Athletes and those with highly physical jobs perspire more, leading to a loss of key minerals and nutrients. Plus, because of their activity levels, some folks need to consume larger amounts of nutrient-rich foods. Additional nutritional supplementation is usually required. For more information on Sports Nutrition and our sports nutrition products go HERE

Are you a teenager? Teenagers experience rapid growth spurts that place high demands on nutritional resources. And the teenage diet, which often consists of fast foods and high-sugar sodas, doesn't offer the proper nutritional support. Data shows between 30% and 50% of adolescents aged 12 to 16 have dietary intakes below 2/3 of the recommend daily averages for Vitamins A, C, calcium and iron. For more information on teen health, including recommend supplementation programs for children of different ages, go HERE

Are you a woman of child-bearing age? Women who are pregnant have significantly higher demand for nutrients to ensure the healthy growth of their baby. And in non-pregnant women, research has shown that up to 60% of women suffering from symptoms of PMS such as headaches, bloating, irritability and lethargy can benefit from supplementing with B-Complex, GLA, Alfalfa, Soy Protein, Calcium and Magnesium. For more information on Women's Health and the supplements needed go HERE

Are you over fifty years old? As you age, your body loses its ability to fully absorb nutrients, particularly iron, calcium and zinc. Fiber intake is often lower and chances are, the older you get the more prescription drugs you are taking - all of which highlight the need for additional nutritional supplementation. We provide Vita-Lea Gold a specially formulated version of Vita-Lea that takes into consideration the nutritional needs of people over 50. For more information go HERE

Do you smoke? Chew tobacco? Drink Alcoholic beverages? Take Oral Contraceptives? Eat meals of microwaved food? All of these lifestyle factors dramatically increases your need for nutrients that diet alone just can't provide including a greater need for antioxidants. For a powerful anti-oxidant solution go HERE

Finally, there is simply YOU and your genetics, your unique lifestyle and environment. Who you are genetically, how you live your life and where you live your life can greatly impact the nutrients your body needs to maintain good health. Wide and significant fluctuations in individual nutrient requirements from the "official" Recommended Daily Allowances are common with each individual.

Why Us?There's a reason why we are the largest natural nutrition company in the United States. Our nutrition is bioavailable, which means that the products break down so that the nutrients can be absorbed in your body. And the products work, because no other company adheres to the same level of scientific and ethical standards as those that we demand of our self. Our products are guaranteed to contain the ingredients as stated on its labels, so you know what you are getting, each and every time!

There are other companies that manufacture good supplements. Few however, begin to approach the level of scientific proof of performance for their products or are as meticulous about quality control from the farm to the consumer as we do.

The result of such self-scrutiny can be seen in the groundbreaking Landmark Study, published in the peer-reviewed Nutrition Journal.

Over 300 long-time users (all using our prodicts for over 20 years) were randomly selected and thoroughly tested. Their results were then compared with national published data of studies done on those who take no supplements or who take other brands of multivitamins. Our users were healthier in 20 different categories. Benefits ranged from improved energy, enhanced immune function, better muscle function, better bone and nervous system health. Our users not only had a better overall perception of their health, they had higher blood nutrient levels and HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol), as well as lower C-reactive protein, homosysteines and triglycerides. Also of note was the fact that Our users over the age of 65 on average used less than one prescription drug, while the average 65 year old person is on ten prescriptions or more!

This Landmark Study is the first independent, clinical, peer-reviewed study of its kind to conclude that our users are healthier than any other identifiable group! No other company has put their products to this type of scrutiny - which clearly answers why choosing our vitamins, herbs and whole food supplements is the wisest choice you can make for the health of your future.

Why Now?Besides the fact that it's a new year and an ideal time to get started on developing healthier habits, now is a great time because we are living in a new golden era of nutrition. A new era that brings a shift to where specific functional foods, also called "nutraceuticals", are being proven for the prevention of chronic diseases and for providing health benefits beyond the traditional nutrients it contains.

From Our Alfalfa Complex as a diuretic, to CoQHeart as a cardiac function enhancer, Nutriferon for immune modulation, OmegaGuard for lowering cholesterol, and Glucose Regulation Complex (to name just a few) for hyperglycemia and as a regulator for Type 2 Diabetes, our functional food formulas have been designed to deliver health benefits that approach those of patented medications-without the side effects of medications.

This new golden age of nutrition is not in competition with traditional medical approaches, as they are in two separate fields of endeavor. The traditional medical establishment is trained to treat disease. Our company’s nutraceuticals, herbs and whole food supplements are all about building health.

Finally, new scientific discoveries are happening every year that advance the field of nutritional supplementation. Discoveries resulting from the human genome project are leading to greater individualized nutrition supplemental choices. And breakthrough scientific advances, like the development of our new Vitalizer with its multi-patented S.M.A.R.T delivery system that produces 200% better absorption of ingredients compared to any previous formulas, are completely redefining the power of nutritional supplementation.

So there's never been a better time to get started building optimum health and there's never been a better daily nutrition program than our Vitalizer, with 80 bio-optimized nutrients clinically proven to create a foundation for a longer, healthier life.

Vitalizer comes in a convenient daily nutrition strip you take once a day and provides a full month of energy and vitality, and just as important, the building blocks for good, lifelong health. For more information on Vitalizer or to order it online go HERE

And if you place Vitalizer on a standing AutoShip order you'll save an additional 10% off the member price. There are a total of nine essential amino acids that the body can’t make and must get from eating foods high in dietary protein. And once consumed digestive enzymes breakdown proteins into amino acids so they can be absorbed. Once absorbed amino acids travel to the liver and the liver then can determine whether or not amino acids are needed to make new body proteins (like muscle tissue), converted to glucose for needed energy or if not needed by the body converted to fat and stored for later use.

However, leucine is unique in that once absorbed it travels directly to muscle tissue where it acts as a signal for protein synthesis. How does it signal protein synthesis? Well, without getting too technical, leucine activates a special component of a muscle building metabolic pathway, called mTOR. Try to think of mTOR as the amino acid sensor in cells and know that it is sensitive to the presence of leucine. As leucine concentrations increase in muscle cells, mTOR knows there is sufficient protein available to make new muscle protein. Another way to better understand this process is with an analogy. You want build a brand new home and mTOR is the contracting company you hired to do the job. Your new home is like the protein your body is trying to make, the machines (bulldozers, cranes etc) you use to make the building are components of the protein synthesis pathway and leucine is the cash you need to make the project work. When enough cash is available (increased leucine concentrations in muscle tissue) the contracting company (mTOR) can not only start building your new home (new muscle protein) but can also purchase more machines (increased muscle building components) to increase the capacity and speed at which they construct your new home (the muscle protein being made).

So now that you understand how leucine works to signal muscle protein synthesis - let's discuss why this is important for weight loss. Well, to start it's important to know that your body’s muscle like many other tissues of the body, it is constantly being broken down and built back up again. When the rate of muscle breakdown is equal to the rate of muscle building, the result is maintenance of muscle protein tissue. However, the problem is that when you restrict calories in attempt to lose weight, your body still needs to supply energy for every day functions (the beating of your heart, breathing, etc.) and to accomplish that it will used stored energy in your muscles and liver, start to break down stored body fat but it also breaks down muscle and other body proteins to amino acids, which can be further metabolized to produce energy.

However, you don’t want to break down your muscle tissue for energy because muscle is metabolically active tissue. It burns calories. So where leucine helps is by stimulating muscle protein synthesis, thereby offsetting the breakdown that naturally occurs when you cut calories to lose weight. The payoff - leucine helps your body preserve muscle mass while you lose weight from fat. In turn holding on your muscle mass while you lose weight also helps protect you from the drop in metabolism that typically occurs in most diets. And keeping your metabolic rate from dropping is key to successful long term weight management.

Click HERE to learn more and start on your own program for weight loss and management!MKnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876453762765956686.post-30226135091119388772007-09-09T18:08:00.000-04:002007-09-09T18:13:19.604-04:00Leonardo DiCaprio's Movie, The 11th HourAwesome interview from 11th Hour Action website with Roger Barnett, Shaklee CEO

Where to go see this movie? Some furniture manufacturers even donate a certain percentage of their profits to organizations like the Forest Stewardship Council that work to fight against deforestation, global warming, and logging, so it’s always a good idea to see if your purchase will in some way help in the battle of saving the environment.

Furniture from websites such as Eco-Furniture.com offer many environmentally friendly furnishing alternatives, along with advice and quick tips on how to green out your home. Offering furniture that is only made from recyclable materials and sustainably harvested wood, consumers are ensured that the making of their furniture did not harm the environment. Sustainably harvested wood means that the wood used in making a particular product was taken from a certified wood harvesting site and not unsustainably logged, which can have an adverse effect on the environment.

Many ready to assemble (RTA) furniture items are also made from recyclable materials and sustainably harvested wood. The reason being is that many RTA furniture manufacturers are hell-bent on reducing waste, cutting out excess chemicals and unnecessary bells and whistles. Usually constructed from medium density fiberboard and sustainably harvested plywood, consumers can rest assured knowing that their RTA investments are affordable, durable and recyclable. As a consumer, it’s not impossible to do your part in greening your home. Paying attention and asking where your furniture was manufactured, whether the wood was harvested from a certified wood harvesting site, and whether any harmful chemicals were used in the making of your product are among a list of questions you should always ask before making a furniture purchase.

Whether or not you’re an environmental skeptic, it’s never alright to harm the planet we live on. As humans, there are necessary factors that need to be met in order to live as comfortably as possible; however our decisions impact the planet and we should consider how we can reduce waste and give back to the environment while achieving an acceptable standard of comfortable living.

Article Source: http://www.eco-furniture.com/MKnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876453762765956686.post-59139072926709798142007-08-24T09:53:00.000-04:002007-08-24T09:56:11.359-04:00Shaklee PhilanthropyShaklee Members and the public can help provide much needed supplies and assistance to the victims of this disaster through the nonprofit charitable organization, Shaklee Cares®. Driving in cars, flying in planes, engaging in recreational activities, and being exposed to environmental pollutants all pose varying degrees of risk. Some risks are simply unavoidable. Some we choose to accept because to do otherwise would restrict our ability to lead our lives the way we want. And some are risks we might decide to avoid if we had the opportunity to make informed choices. Indoor air pollution is one risk that you can do something about.

For products to help improve your indoor air click HERE

Indoor Air Topics

Asthma - Asthma afflicts about 20 million Americans, including 6.3 million children. In 2000 there were nearly 2 million emergency room visits and nearly half a million hospitalizations due to asthma, at a cost of almost $2 billion, and causing 14 million school days missed each year. Read More...

Read about this year's National Environmental Leadership Awards in Asthma Management
IAQ Tools for Schools (TfS) Program - Twenty percent of the U.S. population, nearly 55 million people, spend their days in our elementary and secondary schools. Sorry to spoil it, but you may have just made your home dirtier.

Think of it this way. You wouldn’t let your kids play with toxic chemicals, so why would you let the baby crawl over a floor that’s just been wiped with them? That’s much more dangerous than the orange juice that was just there.

How dangerous? Just take a look at these statistics.

• Over 90% of poison exposures happen at home.

• Common chlorine bleach is the #1 household chemical involved in poisoning.

• Organic pollutants, found in many common cleaners and even air fresheners, are found at levels 2 to 5 times higher inside your home than out.

• A person who spends 15 minutes cleaning scale off shower walls could inhale three times the “acute one-hour exposure limit” for glycol ether-containing products set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

• Common cleaners give off fumes that can potentially increase the risk of kids developing asthma, the most common chronic childhood disease.

• 1 in 13 school-aged children has asthma. Rates in children under five have increased more than 160% from 1980 – 1994.

• Children are highly vulnerable to chemical toxicants. Pound for pound of body weight, children drink more water, eat more food, and breathe more air than adults. The implication of this is that children will have substantially heavier exposures than adults to any toxicants that are present in water, food, or air.

• If your home is anything like the average U.S. home, you generate more than 20 pounds of household hazardous waste each year (the EPA designates toilet cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, oven cleaners, and bleach as hazardous waste).

To find out what’s lurking on your shelves, go to the National Institutes of Health Library of Medicine Household Products Database. You can search almost any brand of cleaner you use, find out what’s in it, and uncover its links to health effects. Or search by chemical ingredients (see list below for some examples) and discover what brands contain it.

The information may shock you.

Chemical ingredients to look out for:
• Sodium hydroxide
• Hydrochloric acid
• Butyl cellosolve
(2-Butoxyethanol)
• Formaldehyde
• Bleach (sodium hypochlorite)
• Ammonia
• Sulfamic acid
• Petroleum distillates
• Sulfuric acid
• Lye (potassium hydroxide)
• Morpholine
www.householdproducts.nlm.nih.gov/ingredients.htm

Our products are safe and non toxic! MKnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3876453762765956686.post-62044468376493366152007-06-22T12:20:00.000-04:002007-07-05T07:27:54.858-04:00Have you gone GREEN yet? (Indoor Air Quality)According to the American Lung Association, indoor air quality is an issue we all need to be concerned about!

"Levels of air pollution inside the home can be two to five times higher (and occasionally 100 times higher) than outdoor levels. (Source: Environmental Protection Agency, 2002)"

To read more click HERE.

What can you do about it? In a booklet chapter written by Kathleen Parrott, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. ©2002 University of Wisconsin Extension, she explains why you should be concerned, things to look for in your home that are unsafe and things you can do to change your indoor air issues.

What is another step you can take? Using an indoor air purifier is an excellent way to help with indoor air pollutants.

Why Use an Air Purifier? Every day the average adult breathes in up to 900 cubic feet of air. And the Environmental Protection Agency states that “since most people spend a majority of their lives indoors, the quality of indoor air is a major area of concern….” In fact, the large surface area of the lungs and the sensitivity of the tissues make them particularly susceptible to air pollution. Pollen, dander, smoke, and mold enter our bodies through our large and vulnerable lungs.

Our air filter helps reduce all three of the major forms of air pollution: particles such as pollen, pet dander, dust, and cigarette smoke; microbes such as mold and bacteria; and gases and odors. That's especially critical since the Environmental Protection Agency consistently ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health.

Read HERE for testimonials about our air purification products!

Ready to purchase? This figure represents a 14% increase in the prevalence rate from NHANES III (1988-94) and a 36% increase from NHANES II (1976 -80). (Prevalence is the percentage of the population that falls into the designated category.)

The greatest increase took place in the obese group (Body Mass Index > 30), where the prevalence doubled from NHANES II (1976-80). Roughly 59 million American adults are in this group, which is at the greatest health risk. (Please note that NHANES data are based on weights and heights as actually measured by trained health professionals using standardized measuring equipment.)

Source: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/pubs/pubd/hestats/obese/obse99.htm

The maps below graphically depict this trend over a 16-year span. It is important to note that these figures are based on telephone interviews where weight and height are self-reported. Self reported data tend to underestimate weight and over-report height. Therefore, the prevalence rates are actually under-estimates compared to the NHANES data which originate from actual measurements.

to view the entire presentation go to: http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/trend/maps/index.htm

Obesity is associated with significantly increased risk of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, certain forms of cancer, sleep apnea, and osteoarthritis. In addition, the increasing prevalence of obesity and its associated complications places a tremendous burden on healthcare utilization and costs. This epidemic of obesity mandates prompt attention from the heath care and preventive health services in order to minimize the rise in the incidence of new case of diabetes, heart disease and other obesity-related complications.
Relationship of BMI to mortality riskThe risks of many medical complications increase with increasing body mass index. These medical complications lead to premature mortality in obese persons. In a prospective study of more than 1 million adults in the United States (457,785 men and 588,369 women), Calle et al studied the relation between body mass index and the risk of death from all causes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease (2). In people who had never smoked, the lowest point of the mortality curve occurred at a body mass index of 23.5 to 24.9 in men and 22.0 to 23.4 in women. Above those points, the relative risk of death increased linearly with increased body mass indices in both men and women.

Relationship of overweight and obesity to hypertensionBlood pressure is clearly strongly correlated with BMI. In the INTERSALT study (3), the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure was studied in over 10,000 men and women, between 20 and 59 years of age, sampled from 52 centers around the world. BMI was significantly associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, independent of age, alcohol intake, smoking habit, and sodium and potassium excretion. The precise prevalence of obesity-related hypertension associated with obesity varies with age, race, and sex of the population studied and with the criteria used for the definition of hypertension and obesity.(4) Roughly 30% of cases of hypertension may be attributable to obesity, and in men under 45 years of age, the figure may be as high as 60%.(5) In the Framingham Offspring Study, 78% of cases of hypertension in men and 64% in women were attributable to obesity.(6)

Prospective studies have shown that obesity increases the risk of developing hypertension.(6)(7) Moreover, weight gain in adulthood is in itself an important risk factor for the development of hypertension.(6)(8) In the long-term Nurses Health Study (8), BMIs at 18 years of age and at midlife were positively associated with the occurrence of hypertension. Weight gain after 18 years of age significantly increased the risk for hypertension. Compared with women who gained less than 2 kg (4.4 pounds), women who gained 5.0 to 9.9 kg (11-22 pounds) were 74% more likely to have hypertension, and those who gained more than 25 kg (55 pounds) were more than 5 times more likely to have hypertension. (7) Excess weight and even modest adult weight gain substantially increase risk for hypertension: each 1-kg increase in weight after age 18 was associated with a 5% increase in risk for hypertension.

Relationship of overweight and obesity to type 2 diabetesIt is likely that the 25% increase in the prevalence of diabetes in the last 20 years in the United States (9) is due to the marked increase in the prevalence of obesity. Body mass index, abdominal fat distribution, and weight gain are important risk factors for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data from NHANES III indicated that two-thirds of adult men and women in the United States diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have a BMI of 27 kg/m² or greater.(10) Moreover, the risk of diabetes increased with BMI; diabetes prevalence was 2%, 8% and 13% in those with BMI 25-29.9kg/m² (overweight), 30-34.9 kg/m² (class 1 obesity), and >35 kg/m² (class 2 and 3 obesity), respectively.(9) Data from the Nurses Health Study demonstrated that the risk of diabetes begins to increase in "normal" weight women when BMI exceeds 22 kg/m².(11)(12) Weight gain during adulthood also increases the risk of diabetes, even at relatively low levels of BMI in initially normal weight individuals.(12)(13) Compared with women who kept their weight within 5 kg (11 pounds) of their initial weight over a 14-year period, women who gained only 5 to 8 kg (11-17.6 pounds) were nearly twice as likely to develop diabetes over that period, even after adjusting for initial BMI. Those who gained 11 to 20 kg (about 24 to 44 pounds) were more than 5 times as likely to develop diabetes. It takes 2 to 3.5 tons of trees to make one ton of paper. Pulp and paper is the 5th largest industrial consumer of energy in the world, using as much power to produce a ton of product as the iron and steel industry. In some countries, including the United States, paper accounts for nearly 40 percent of all municipal solid waste. Making paper uses more water per ton than any other product in the world. Source: The Worldwatch Institute.

Over a ton of resources is saved for every ton of glass recycled -- 1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of feldspar. Also a ton of glass produced from raw materials creates 384 pounds of mining waste. Using 50% recycled glass cuts the waste by 75%.

Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for four hours.

It is because of these types of startling facts that Shaklee is committed to providing people highly concentrated products. It's the question food shoppers are asked every day — a simple choice that even environmentally conscious shoppers at Whole Foods in Chicago find confusing.

"I generally pick paper because it's more protective of the environment," one shopper tells us.
But all too often, convenience rules.

"You caught me on a plastic day," another shopper says. "Now I feel guilty."But should she?
Consumers find themselves between a rock and a hard place when it comes to paper or plastic. To find out what is best to do in the grocery store, we turned to Allen Hershkowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council.

"It depends on where you live," he says.

Plastic bags threaten wildlife along the coasts, so if that's where you call home, Hershkowitz says the choice should be paper. In the heartland, he says it's plastic.

"I just assumed paper was the better choice — more environmentally friendly choice," our guilty shopper says.

But people don't realize how big a footprint the paper industry has.

Here's how paper and plastic stack up side by side:
To make all the bags we use each year, it takes 14 million trees for paper and 12 million barrels of oil for plastic. The production of paper bags creates 70 percent more air pollution than plastic, but plastic bags create four times the solid waste — enough to fill two and a half times the space, and they can last up to a thousand years.

Plastic, because it's cheaper to produce, is the overwhelming choice of grocery stores across the nation — the average family of four uses almost 1,500 of these a year. San Francisco is limiting consumers' freedom of choice, allowing only biodegradable plastic bags, which break down over months rather than hundreds of years.

For both types of bags, the environmentalist mantra is the same — reuse and recycle. But the best choice, they say, is cloth or canvas, and BYOB — bring your own bags.

© 2007 MSNBC Interactive
URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18538484/
© 2007 MSNBC.com
MKnoreply@blogger.com
