Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma

The Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma - a well known luxury resort in the Bahamas - is shutting down for business May 26.

Just like our resort, resorts on paradise island Bahamas are struggling to keep the high end tourists coming. Like during any economical recession: high end tourists tie their belts and seek less expensive beach travel destinations like Malacca Beach in Malaysia.

We do have to point out that if you look around on the Internet, you can still find bargains to visit the high end resorts for a not so high end price!

US is struck the hardest though and Bahamas vacations are visibly on the decline. That's why the Four Seasons Resort Great Exuma at Emerald Bay, which only opened in 2003 and had troubles paying its debts in 2007, will close May 26.

This resort is part of a 500-acre (202-hectare) development that includes a marina and golf course.

The good news is that there already is new ownership in place and the government is helping the search for investment to acquire and reopen the hotel.

The bad news is that although there are plenty of cheap and good Bahamas vacation packages on offer, most big Bahamas resorts have announced layoffs as the world economic crisis slashes tourism across the Caribbean:

For example: In January, the Westin and Sheraton Grand Bahama Our Lucaya Resort laid off 181 employees, which is about 1 fifth of its beachfront work force.

Meanwhile the sprawling Atlantis Resort Paradise Island Bahamas has dismissed about 800 workers this season.

Baha Mar Resorts Ltd. however laid off only 80 employees at two Bahamas locations.

Reason why they are doing better is that they got fresh capital from Chinese investors, who are also bringing their workers over. Since traveling is a world wide business, no need to jump up and down when China brings over a Chinese workforce. Better that than no more resorts in the Bahamas.

If I am not busy, I try every morning to join the yoga positions for beginners session at our resort. It's free for every guest anyway :-)

It's fun, relaxing and one of the biggest benefits of yoga is that it wakes me up to start a great new day!

I have to admit the first time I joined in, the basic yoga poses were quite tiring and I managed to stretch muscles I never felt before... And it is more tiring than I expected for exercises that are done on 1 and the same spot. I mean, we are not running, not even jumping up and down, just stretching and "twisting" our bodies...

If you do yoga in the tropics, make sure you do it on a place in the shade like in the picture. Because even in the morning, it's never a good idea to be in the sun for more than an hour, let alone doing all the yoga exercises.

Also make sure to wear special yoga clothing... No need to buy yoga clothing from Lululemon : the most popular Yoga clothing brand that I know of. Just wear something not too warm and not to tight as like I said, you need to stretch in positions you never held possible. And no, they don't practice naked yoga here, so make sure to wear something :-)

Remember you are in for an eastern class of yoga to purify and strengthen your physical and spiritual body. You are not there for a western class of showing off the most fashionable commercialised clothes!

Make sure to bring a towel to wipe your face in case you start sweating (I see some people wearing headbands as well). Also don't plan an excursion that would start right after your yoga class, because you would love to take a shower first!

Again lots of Japanese tourists are taking up the yoga positions for beginners session, which means that our yoga instructor explains the moves both in English and Japanese.

Basic yoga poses

Don't panic when you can't do the basic yoga pose from the picture above. Remember you are on holiday and just do the yoga session for the fun of it. The instructor will make sure you are warmed up very well and you only stretch as far as you want or can do.

If all this would embarrass you, you can always sit down at the back where nobody will see you :-) But if you are as small as me, you will only sit at the back for 5 minutes and then quickly change position to the front row in order to see clearly how the instructor is performing his basic yoga poses. Nobody will be really paying attention to you unless some male tourists who are looking for a date ...

The above Malay bikini girl's mothers started wearing bikinis and swimsuits on the beach after they got introduced in the movies of the 80s.

Malaysian female top artists like Julia Rais started wearing a high cut one piece swimsuit in a local Malaysian movie. Other movies showing artists in swimwear soon followed like in Harry Boy, Boss and Driving School.

A bit later we not only saw Sofea Jane horse-riding in a one piece swimsuit, but also strutting her stuff in a bikini in a beach scene.

Although lots of Malaysian women do wear bikinis, equally a lot of women don't dress down at the beach. Like we saw this Malay girl still wearing her veil swimming in the water of a Malacca beach.

2. The hot sun

Most Malaysian women will wear a dress or a T-shirt over their bikini or bathing suit, simply to be protected against the hot sun.

Care for your Suit

Chlorine and Spandex have a very tenuous relationship.

It makes me very optimistic that there has been a trend toward converting skin drying, swimsuit destroying chlorine pools into saline which is way less harmful to swimwear.

If you are using your suit in a pool, be sure to wash it out with a mild detergent and hang it to dry.

I have heard stories that if the chlorine is strong enough (like you can smell it - yuck!) and a suit has been left in a ball un-rinsed, a suit will literally disintegrate in days.

How to choose a bikini Tip #4

Try a Tankini rather than a One Piece

I am sensitive to these feelings and that is a big part of why I created my line and when designing my Portland Swimwear Store I took great lengths to try to make it a fun and comfortable place to try on Swimsuits.

Kristin Davis Yoga

Kristin Davis enjoys yoga so much that her abdomen is to die for. (Reminds me on Gwen Stefani's abdomen...)

Just to show you a well known example of Sex and the City Kristen Davis doing yoga to keep her body and mind in shape. The main thing to remember when doing yoga is doing warm up exercises! After knowing how to warm up, yoga is your ideal exercise to do in the comfort of your house.

Again, you don't need any sophisticated clothes nor sportgear to practice yoga. A yoga mat is practical but my thick carpet at home does the trick as well. And as you can see in the picture of our previous Yoga positions for beginners post, some yoga exercises are done without a mat.

Why yoga? Because it's not only good for your body, but for your spirits as well! If you learn anything about traditional Asian culture it should be how we connect our body and souls to that of our ancestors and the world around us. Yoga results not only in a stronger, more flexible body but also in a calmer nervous system, a quieter mind, and a connection to one's true nature.

For those coming to Phuket for the Phuket girls, nightlife and massages, yoga also improves your sex life! Not only because you can twist and turn your body in positions you never imagined before, but again because your spirit will be more grounded to what you are doing...

Hatha yoga teacher training

If you need some extra income in 2009 and you are a hatha yoga fanatic like me, then consider going for a hatha yoga teacher training program. You learn more about yoga, get certified during the proces and end up earning money teaching others yoga poses in stead of doing it on your own.

I know you can take 200 hours hatha yoga teacher training courses in Thailand. But we all know since the Thai government is changing like we change our underwear, Thailand is not really an option. I know because I am still stationed in Bali this new year...

What's hatha yoga teacher training all about?

Yoga teacher training usually consists out of courses in between 200 and 500 hours to give the new teacher knowledge,

skills, and confidence:

about movements, breathing, sounds, concentration, meditation and prayer

to begin teaching hatha yoga safely, mindfully and profitably.

As you can see: it's a bit more than just learning how to teach a particular asana exercise or pose :-)

Amazingly but true, there even exist home study hatha yoga teacher training programs! But since part of the course is to have confidence interacting with yoga students, make sure you choose a course that has some way of interaction between teachers and students.

Why hatha yoga?

Of course you need to go for the yoga style your prefer: gaiam yoga, kripalu yoga, bikram yoga or namaste yoga...

It just happens that the first time I did yoga, I found out it was hatha yoga. Not surprisingly, as hatha yoga is one of the most common yoga styles taught in the USA.

How to know you enroll in a good hatha yoga teacher training?

As usual, do your homework :-) Google is a great place to find out what others have experienced in their yoga teacher certification.

Ask around whether the 3 topics listed above are part of the yoga teacher course you want to enroll in. Make sure you learn about how to manage your own yoga school if you don't want to be a yoga instructor like the one we have in our resorts.

How to fool the locals?

If you want to have some extra income fast, you could sign up for those weekend yoga training courses, but in the end you will be fooling yourself because bad karma attracts bad karma!

And don't fool yourself too much either: use good yoga mats or pilates mats. I started off using a thick carpet, but I do feel the difference since I am carrying my own real yoga mat with me :-)

Hatha yoga teacher training summarized

If you are into yoga and you love to teach, then consider following a hatha yoga teacher training course to earn some extra income in these gloomy economical days.

If you never did any yoga before, get youself a power yoga dvd. Or tune in on the Health Channel as they have a daily broadcast of namaste yoga (except for during the weekends, when working people do have the time to do some exercises in the morning...).

Where is Bali

Bali is where I will spend my next 2 weeks holiday. Actually, it's way too quite for comfort here in our Phuket Spa resort, so I am voluntarily taking my vacation and return to my home-base in one of the Spa resorts in Bali.

No, I am not going to enjoy massages and la 'dolce far niente', I am just going to continue working there.

Then it will be up to the management in Phuket whether they have enough tourists to need me back or whether I can be more useful in our Bali spa resort.

So where is Bali Island?

Bali is in Indonesia. It's one of the 17,000 islands. Bali is 145 km (90 miles) long and 80 km (50 miles) wide. Bali is situated just east of the island of Java and west of Lombok.

Most of Bali's 3 million people are Hindu, which for me makes it an ideal spa destination. But that's just because I love the Hindu way of every day making small offerings to the Gods. It keeps you in sink with nature and the creation in a beautiful matter.

And it beats the Balinese dances and Gamelan orchestra performances that are so over the top made for the tourist. But hey, if you like that, then don't listen to my preferences :-)

Bali offers something for everybody, just hire a driver and a guide and get around the places you want to see.

The expensive Bali resorts and spas have a tide security, as Bali is where the Bali bombings took place years ago :-(

That's what Sutara Bahramia must have been thinking when she wore a bikini at the Miss Earth beauty pageant in Manila in 2005...

Or is it that only President Hamid Karzai can use tax payers money in order to perform his daily personal fashion show: his clothes can be fashionable, but what is he doing for the clothes of all Afghan women that are not living in his vicinity?

And how does Hamid Karzai expect Afghan women earn some pocket money?

Sutara Bahramia was the first Afghan woman to compete in an international beauty competition (Miss Earth, Manila, Philippines) in three years and sparked controversy in her native Islamic country.

Of course there is no controversy whatsoever when women in Afghanistan are not even allowed to go to school, let alone to get educated.

But goodness me when one Afghan woman get's spotted in a bikini...

Afghan hot or not? Very hot and they could show also to be very intelligent if only they were allowed to enroll themselves in schools.

Hatha Yoga

Which yoga style suits you best? For me it is hatha yoga because that's frankly the only yoga style I found with instructor :-)

Finding the right style of yoga practice can be as hard as finding the right handbag. Having said so, the way of finding your style of yoga is similar to finding your next new handbag: you need to look around, try and see.

I admit, it's easier to enter a shopping mall than to enter a yoga class. And especially after your first yoga sessions, you could think that maybe yoga isn't your thing. Why?

Because the yoga style is not your style or

because the yoga instructor is not your type.

Whatever the case: go and sign up for another yoga school to find out whether it's the yoga instructor or the yoga style that doesn't suit you! And you can always sign up for a hatha yoga teacher training yourself :-) For sure that's not something I am going to do ;-).

Which styles to choose from? The most popular yoga style taught is hatha. On the health channel you can have an idea what namaste yoga is all about.

Other styles are vinyasa yoga, bikram yoga, ashtanga yoga, iyengar yoga, kundalini yoga, Yin, kripalu yoga, integral yoga and viniyoga. With so many different yoga styles around surely there must be one that is written for you!

Hatha yoga definition

Hatha yoga is a traditional form of yoga which lies at the base of many modern yoga styles.

Hatha yoga is based on the union of body, mind and spirit and therefore includes the practice of :

physical postures called asanas

breathing exercises called pranayama and

meditation called dhyana.

I especially love the breathing exercises and meditation part, as during a normal working day in my Bali spa resort, I already encounter enough physical exercise ;-)

Other yoga styles in a nutshell

Ashtanga or power yoga as Madonna calls it, focuses on speed building strength and stamina.

Bikram is for experienced yogis with 26 postures performed in a heated room (or outside in tropical South East Asia)

Iyengar yoga focuses on alignment using props like straps, blocks and bolsters to hold poses longer. What I find the most appealing on this style of yoga is that you are encouraged to move at your own pace. Just that I don't feel much like carrying props around, I already find pilates mats to much to carry!

Vinyasa yoga is a style I don't understand quite well. It has to do with linking your breathing to your movements but every time I see a class of Vinyasa, it looks completely different.

The only way to truly know if a yoga style is for you is to try and see! The easiest way to start yoga is signing up for a hatha yoga class, as hatha yoga instructors are the most common.

Death of Sandra Cantu

Sandra Cantu was found death only being 8 years of age in a suitcase in Tracy California USA.

Sandra Cantu had gone missing on March 2009 wearing a pink Hello Kitty T-shirt and black leggings, the same clothes the missing child was wearing when Tracy dairy farm workers found her body in a suitcase in pond - only 2 miles away from where Sandra was seen last.
