This two-day seminar covers the basics of lighting for portrait shots, a popular application in photography. This course aims to reduce the complexity of light and illumination to a learnable level, and show its application in photographing people as subjects.

The course allows participants to:
- Learn the fundamental principles of lighting and its importance in creating better portraits
- Master the primary controllable characteristics of light and see how they apply to portraiture
- Become familiar with the different in-studio lighting tools, both standard and improvised, in order to achieve desired lighting results
- Master the systematic way of setting up lighting for portrait shots using artificial light sources

Requirements
- Must have taken Primer on Lighting workshop or equivalent course
- Camera with manual exposure control, preferably digital
- Optional: exposure-flash meter, tripod

Jay Alonzo specializes in people photography. He has taken photos for the talents' portfolio of a local modeling agency, worked with movie production companies on their cinema posters and publicity photos, and done celebrity shoots for High Life magazine, a Business Day publication.

Emmanuel Santos was born in the Philippines in 1957 and migrated to Melbourne in 1982. A photo essayist specializing in areas of ethnology, spirituality and social documentary, Santos began his photographic career working for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Australia, Singapore, Japan, Belguim, France, the Ukraine, Israel and Brazil. His work is widely collected and published worldwide. In May 2008, his series of 38 photographs, The Passing of Light was sold at the Christie’s Southeast Asian Contemporary Auction, breaking records in Philippine photography.

In his workshop with slideshow and lectures, Santos will discuss the process of Passive (concept) and Active (realization) in creative image making through photography. In it, he will share his insights on inspiration and the whole creative process involved in creating bodies of works. There are no prerequisites to join the series but an interest in photography and image-making are necessary. Slots are limited.

The New Voice Company, fresh from the successful staging of its' VDay Manila 2008 benefit performance of THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES by Eve Ensler, back to back with VDay's newest work - A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT AND A PRAYER, announces its upcoming weekend season acting workshop.

From October 11 to December 1, every Saturday from 1 - 3pm, the company will hold its weekend season acting workshop. Classes offered this year are Acting for Teens and Adults (ages 13 and above). Classes will be held at the NVC Actors Studio in Makati.

The New Voice Company is known for its exceptionally high training standards, and uses a curriculum combining the very best of modern theatre. NVC Artistic Director and Founder Monique Wilson, is a graduate from the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA), and gained her MA in Applied Theatre from the Central School of Speech and Drama, London. She has taught at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London and is currently Course Director/ Head of MA-MFA Acting (for international students) at East 15 Drama School, one of the UK's leading acting schools. NVC Acting Workshops are based on the London/West End training she has brought to the company.

The course is aimed at students (13 years old and above) who wish to explore the exciting world of Theatre. The students will have classes in acting, movement and voice - which include acting technique and scene studies - combining various strands of performance arts. Particular emphasis is placed on combining a solid acting approach using the Stanislavski system, as devised by Uta Hagen. This includes sense memory, physical and psychological actions, animal work, relationship exercises, character work, obstacles and improvisations.

No previous experience is necessary, but all students are expected to participate fully in the course.

The New Voice Company has always been synonymous with mounting critically acclaimed productions with exceptional artistic standards, and the company's theatre training workshops reflects these standards.

New Voice Company Workshop teachers are all trained theatre professionals who are practicing professional theatre directors/ actors/ choreographers and teachers. What is the lecture about?

"Hidalgo, Bustamante and the Big Black Wolf" begins with Felix R.Hidalgo's painting "Assassination of Governor Bustamante", a bequest of the Locsin Family to the National Museum. From the painting, Prof. Ocampo traces the history of the story of Governor Bustamante from the bloody events of the 18th century and how it spawned the novel "La LobaNegra" (The Black Wolf) previously believed to have been written by Fr.Jose Burgos, and now proven to be a forgery.

The lecture will try and weave the various strands of the Bustamante story and relate them with other times, other works.

About Prof. Ambeth R. Ocampo:
Ambeth R. Ocampo is the Chairman of the National Historical Institute (NHI) and Associate Professor, Department of History, Ateneo de Manila University. He is a public historian, and writes a widely-read opinion page column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer. He has published fourteen (14) books, mostly compilations of his historical essays. He is the recipient of numerous honours and awards.

IIFA PRESENTS NEW ROUND OF WORKSHOPS IN ACTING AND DIRECTING

The International Institute of Film and the Arts (IIFA) proudly announces its new round of workshops in acting and directing for the last quarter of 2008 to be handled by leading theater, film and television practitioners.

There are three courses in acting (Basic Acting, Acting for Musical Theater, and Acting for Film and TV) and one in directing (Introduction for TV Commercial Directing) which will be conducted at the IIFA home at Suite 315 , Evekal Building , 855 Arnaiz Avenue ( Pasay Road ), Makati City .

In Basic Acting, students will be introduced to the rudiments of acting, including voice, movement and characterization culminating in a workshop showcase. Course instructor is Dodos de la Cruz, currently a faculty member of the DLSU- College of St. Benilde. Classes will be held on Tuesdays-Thursdays-Saturdays, 6-10 P.M., from October 8- 29. No previous experience is required.

In Acting for Musical Theater, singing and movement classes complement acting exercises to prepare students for musical theater productions. Handled by Aliw Awardee Roeder Camanag, classes will be on Mondays-Wednesdays-Fridays, October 7-28.

Highly acclaimed actress and acting coach Irma Adlawan will handle a special course in Acting for Television and Film. To be held thru four Saturdays from October 4-25, from 9am to 5pm, the class is open to those who have had prior acting experience and want to improve and expand their craft.

Following its highly successful run earlier this year, Introduction to TV Commercial Directing will once again be offered under veteran director Cris Mojica, founder of the TV Commercial Directors Club and IIFA President. Those who wish to participate are required to have had prior production experience, whether school/amateur or professional, and will be tasked to produce a TV commercial during the workshop. Classes will be held daily from Tuesdays to Fridays, 1-5pm, from October 7 to 17.

Tuition for the classes are as follows: Basic Acting - P8.000; Acting for Musical Theater - P10,000; Acting for TV and Film and Introduction to TV Commercial Directing - P12,000.

In collaboration with Black Tent Theater of Japan (BTT) and Nottle Theater of Korea (NT) , PETA is staging an interpretation of Giacomo Puccini's TOSCA.

Directed by Soxie Topacio (PETA) and Kiritani Natsuko (BTT) this interpretation focuses on the issues of war, gender, art, politics, life and death while exhibiting elements that are true to the Asian culture, history and heritage.

Tosca runs from August 29-30, 2008 every 2:30 and 7:30 pm at the PETA-Phinma Theater, PETA Theater Center.

TANGHALANG PILIPINO'S 'MGA GERILYA SA POWELL STREET'

Mga Gerilya sa Powell Street, Benjamin Pimentel's novel about the plight of Filipino World War II veterans in America, will finally be given life on stage as Tanghalang Pilipino's second offering for its 22nd Theater Season, after the successful run of Golden Child. Adapted for the stage by Palanca Award - winning playwright Rody Vera, Mga Gerilya sa Powell Street is a timely story that is both funny and heartrending at the same time. It will be shown from November 7 to 30 at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute, with evening performances (8:00PM) every Friday and Saturday, and matinees (3:00PM) every Saturday and Sunday. The play will be directed by Chris Millado, the director of the mega-hit shows Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah and Insiang.

West Side Story Grand Launch..

If there is one word that would describe the 2008 staging of West Side Story, it would probably be serendipity. The different bits and pieces have been falling into place (most of them quite by accident) to come up with something wonderful.

We saw a glimpse of the magic a few days ago at the grand launch of West Side Story to the media and public at Trinoma.

So... why should you watch West Side Story? Here are just a few of the reasons why....

I have many fond memories of bonding sessions with friends and family conducted over at Cafe by the Ruins. It has become a good friend, any trip to Baguio does not feel complete without passing by, if only for a cup of coffee. =)

"Laging Nagmamahal, Maririkit na Guhit para kay Susan Fernandez" Vargas Museum, University of the Philippines Top-notch painters bargain away works for a cause

Leading painters, whose works can be seen in the major galleries, recently banded together to sell their artworks at bargain prices in order to help a friend.

Composed of some forty leading names in Philippine art, "Artists for Susan" has mounted an exhibit called "Laging Nagmamahal, Isang Gabi ng Maririkit na Guhit para kay Susan Fernandez" at the Vargas Museum, University of the Philippines. The exhibit opened last August 12, 2008 and will run for 3 weeks.

Neil Doloricon, lead organizer of the group and former Dean of the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, said the show will pre-sell tickets to potential buyers of the artworks at a "friendly minimum rate" of P5,000.00.

During the exhibit closing on September 9, 2008, the artworks will be raffled off to the buyers, who will only then know whose work they will get. They can thus bring home the artwork that same day or pick it up later.

"Many of us are Susan's friends who have long worked with her on various cause-oriented projects, and in organizing concerts for friends who have been in a similar situation," Doloricon said.

A valued colleague in the arts, Susan Fernandez is one of the pioneers in Filipino alternative music and a singer of songs for socially oriented causes, Doloricon added. "Perhaps unknown to many, her fine voice, dulcet but full of conviction, can be heard in the original Metropop award-winning song and anthem of the feminist cause, 'Babae Ka'."

Fernandez has recently been stricken with cancer. Doloricon said it is in an early stage, and thus it is the best time for her artist-friends to get together and help her on her way back to health. "The financial resources her treatment will require are not unknown to us."

Fernandez has represented the Philippines in various international arts and music festivals, and has been acknowledged as having championed the cause of Filipino culture and music.

A list of the virtual who's who in Philippine art has committed to donate paintings to the exhibit for Fernandez. Among the artists are Adi Baen Santos, Biboy Delotavo, Egai Talusan Fernandez, Renato Habulan, Bogie Tence Ruiz, Brenda Fajardo, Gene de Loyola, Gig de Pio, Vincent de Pio, Boy Dominguez, Benjie Cabangis, Joey Tanedo, Mitsy Reyes, Totet de Jesus, Pandy Aviado, Paul Quiano, Bob Feleo, Ernie Enrique, Rico Lascano, Anna Fer, Cynthia Alexander, Sandra Torrijos, Ed Coronel, Jess Abrera, Benjie Cabrera, Allan Cosio, Ivi Avellana Cosio, Fred Liongoren, Julie Lluch, Aba Dalena, Kiri Dalena, Cap Reyes, Chitoy Zapata, Karen Flores, Lito Carating, Eghai Roxas, Rock Drilon, Gus Albor, Neil Doloricon, and National Artist BenCab.

The Philippine Opera Company and Cultural Center of the Philippines will stage Mozart’s fantasy opera, “The Magic Flute” starting September 19-27, 2008 at the CCP Little Theater.

“The Magic Flute” is a fantasy masterpiece, which combines animation, black theater, and puppetry performed by live artists. It will be directed by Kokoy Jimenez, the man behind the longest running children’s educational television program, “Batibot".

The story takes the audience into the magical adventures of a little girl named Ana who finds a magic flute. This mysterious musical instrument opens the door and carries her into a magical world. As she suddenly realizes that she has entered a different realm of reality, Ana finds herself entangled in the lives of various supernatural beings from a higher kingdom. With the powers of the magic flute in her possession, she encounters and victoriously conquers all sorts of tests and trials as she meets Prince Tamino, Princess Pamina, the bird man Papageno, the dragon, the High Priest Sarastro, and the Queen of the night. A magical adventure filled with exciting music, spectacular dances, amusingly strange characters and valuable lessons to learn makes The Magic Flute a must-see for the young and young at heart..
