Singmaster, Fremont, CA USA
When will someone surprise us by recognizing that biofuels is only, at best, a carbon dioxide recycling process with no real reduction of carbon dioxide overload being achieved. Nature traps the carbon dioxide that gets converted to biofuel to be burned to send that gas back to the atmosphere: NO CARBON DIOXIDE GETS PERMANENTLY REMOVED FROM THE OVERLOAD.
And with fermentations, lots of that gas gets emitted before the fuel is at hand; probably two molecules of that gas for every molecule of ethanol obtained. The thinking here is based not on science but wishes, and little concern for the poor and hungry.
However, we may soon have hydrogen available as three different catalyst have recently been reported to use sunlight energy to split water to get hydrogen. One report is from a Chinese group so China may be surprising us very soon to take leadershiip.
A big misconception not being faced by all environmental groups and many scientists screaming for various emission controlling proposals is that just ends up being a slowing of the growth of the overload and the slowing of the worsening of GW effects. Proposals by a UK scientist and others for trapping that gas out of the air would actually be cutting into the overload but the mechanics of the system require using much energy and the trapping of gas requires large amounts of hazardous flammable chemicals.
And initial results posted recently in Science and Chemical and Engineering News indicated that efficiency of trapping was not going to be energy or cost effective.
I have in several blog posts in New Scientist outlined using pyrolysis of organic wastes to stop them from biodegrading to reemit GHGs needlessly as the charcoal formed is inert stopping the reemitting. PERHAPS----more importantly, pyrolysis will destroy all germs, toxics and drugs in the wastes greatly decreasing spreading of hazardous agents especially the polluting of water supplies. The never ending, ever expanding organic waste mess and attendant water pollution may become a bigger problem than global warming if health problems related to the wastes suddenly get out of hand. Sophia Loren was recently in the news bemoaning the piles of garbage in her beloved Naples.
We need to recognize that organic wastes are a resource that we need to take full advantage for real sustainability. Nature so kindly trapped carbon dioxide in plants that go into animals and come out in wastes. If we pyrolyze those wastes, we stop the reemitting process and destroy the hazardous materials in the wastes. A lot energy is needed but much can be recovered as hot charcoal can pass through a heat exchanger and the expelled gaseous distillate can pass through a turbocharger. After that, the condensed distillate can be refined to get chemicals for making drugs, cosmetics and disinfectants to make money out of the wastes, while also cutting some into foreign oil needs.
It is time to think beyond massive cropping for biofuels that are making a mess of world food supplies. Another worry never considered in biofuels thinking is a pathogen out break, like occurred with the Irish potato famine. With 25-50% of a biofuel crop lost in a similar plague where would our fuel supply be coming from?
Dr. James Singmaster, Fremont, CA

Ed Gallagher's report states we should not abandon...

Ed Gallagher's report states we should not abandon biofuels. The reports states significant carbon emission saving can be made- of the order of 350-400 million tonnes pa. This does not suggest a 'u-turn'. The USA is investing far more than the EC in cellulosic bioethanol (not using food feedstocks, see Fred's plan B article a week or two back). The 'u-turn' has surely already happened. I would think a nation's aspiration to become energy independent on a renewable fuels agenda to be commended.
