Spend Valentines Day At Home

Many people under-estimate spending St Valentine's Day at home as they feel that their other half won't appreciate not going out. But this is a massive miss-understanding. If you're a bloke, most women would appreciate a night that's taken a lot of thought and planning and really looks at what she likes and her interests.

Think about what excites or interests her, think flowers, good drink, making the mood, and above all, make her feel special.

So here's a run down of how to (hopefully) create the perfect St Valentine's Day at home:

Great Food
Here you really need to work out if you're up to the task. If you're an average to excellent cook then give it a go. Your other half would appreciate a home-cooked meal. If it turns out burnt and crispy then you've got something to laugh about - and don't forget that laughter is the greatest aphrodisiac!

If you really are a disaster in the kitchen and you think that you don't want to take the risk then there are plenty good-quality meals that you simply have to put in the oven - just make sure you read the instructions.

A good tip is to avoid highly flavoursome foods like curries and food that has loads of Garlic. Another tip is to make sure you don't cook too much. It's a good idea to leave room for some "nibbles" later - you can always build that into some fun games when the TV is off and you're in the mood to round the night off.

Think about small meals, maybe canape's and food you can feed each other.

create A Romantic Atmosphere
If you're living room or dining room is a mess, tidy it up. Move all distractions out of the room and turn the TV off. Get some nice relaxing music in but don't have it so loud you can't here each other speak. Dim the lights if you can, or get some table lamps with 40 watt bulbs. Make sure the room is at the right temperature, you don't want it too cold or too hot.

Make sure you're close enough so you can hold hands and think of the finishing touches. Rose petals go down very well so sprinkle some of them around.

Not So Small Talk
You can't just get you're head down and munch away! ;-) You've got to have things to talk about, think about what you're other half is interested in and make an effort.

Continue With A Romantic Movie
At this stage we'd probably have gone to bed to watch a film. But it's up to you how you do this. But it's up to you. You could pick an all-time classic like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Brief Encounter or you could go for a recent one like Love Actually or Sleepless in Seattle. Just don't go for a gruesome or depressing one. Think about what sort of mood you'd like to set.

Creating The Mood
If you wanted to continue with a different sort of mood you could try something like doing a couple of rooms into a theme like having a cocktail party for the two of you. Get some groove going, some nice drinks and light food.

Think about stuff like balloons, feathers, sprinkles, chocolates etc.

Weather To Or Not
Depending on what's going on outdoors you could get one of those outdoor heaters and sit out there and look at the stars. If it's a tad chilly get some hot chocolate and some soft tunes.

If it's too wet outside get wet inside. Get some small candles and put them around the bathroom and share a nice hot bath, rubbing oil into each other. This is a sure fire winner.

Escape on a Romantic Getaway
The most popular destination is Paris, but you could think of other places like Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, Rome, Nice, Amsterdam, Dublin or if you're feeling flush you could try New York. But it's not neccarily where you go to, it's how you are. Think of the little things, plan out what you're going to do, but don't try and fit in too much. It's supposed to be a lazy couple of days, so think, nice meal, a bit of shopping and lye-ins. So check what time you have to leave the room when you check-out.

Think Local
There's loads of Country houses or castles you can stay at in this country. Not all are hideously expensive. The best advice is to shop around and start early. If you're on a tight budget try and find somewhere where you don't have to pay until you've had your time away.

If You Want you Stay Closer To Home
You may want to make a special night of it, hire a limo, get some champagne and find a nice restaurant. Don't book anything like a curry or Chinese as these can leave you bloated and unsuitable for an amorous evening. Find somewhere like a French or Italian restaurant, but be careful of the garlic.

If You're In A Pampering Mood
How about you indulge each other in a special spa weekend? This will help you feel relaxed and comfortable. You'll enjoy jacussi's together and get steamy in a sauna - pure bliss.

Interesting Facts about St. Valentines Day

These days people send cards with the traditional love symbols of hearts, flowers and Cupid. However, the cards themselves, have changed radically in the past hundred years. Today we rarely send bespoke, hand-written cards in favour of mass-produced, printed cards.

The Greeting Card Association estimates that a staggering one billion valentines cards are sent each year around the world. And quite interestingly, women account for about 85% of the purchasers.

The commercialism of this day has meant that many joke that February 14th is really a "Hallmark Holiday".

An intersting fact is that the Catholic Church actually recognised seven St. Valentine's days: January 7, February 14, May 2, July 16, August 31, September 2, October 25, November 1 and November 3, November 11, November 13, and December 16, but in 1969 the Roman Catholic Calendar of Saints was amended and the days were dropped. February 14th is now a day for Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius.

The History of St. Valentine's Day

The day is thought to be named after two Christian Martyrs named Valentine who died on February 14th. These two Valentines are valentine of Rome who was martyrdom and buried on the Via Flaminia and was noted for curing the blindness of a young girl. Also there was Valentine of Terni who became a Bishop of Intermna in about AD 197 and was killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. There is talk that the first "Valentine's note" sent was from his jailers daughter where it is alleged to have said "From your Valentine" which could have been because that during the ban of Roman soldiers marrying by Emperor Claudius II St. Valentine secretly helped arrange their marriages.

The actual Valentine that has a day named after him is still not clear. However, some say the two Valentines are in actual the same person.

The day started to become an event in the Middle Ages when the Courts became popular and the name Valentine comes from the word "valor" which means "worthy".

There is, however, another individual that could be the focus of the annual celebrations and that is valentine's of Alexandria (c. 100 - c. 153) who was an influential Gnostic leader and was close to becoming the Bishop of Rome. valentine's preached a version of Christianity where the marriage bed played an important role. Perhaps Valetinius is the source of this festival?

The association between love and February may also come from the historic link between the month and fertility. In ancient Athens the period between our mid-January and mid-February was known as Gameliion and was dedicated to the marriage of Zeus and Hera.

However, the first recorded link between St. Valentine's Day and romantic love, as opposed to solely for sexual union was in 1382 in "parliament of Foules" by Geoffrey Chaucer. Where he remarked that on this day people choose their mates (romantic and sexual partner rather than someone to go down the pub with). However, Chaucer used the context of birds mating and it was unlikely that in the Middle Ages birds would be doing this in mid-Febuary, he could have meant the Saint's day for Valentine of Genoa which as May 2nd.

The oldest surviving Valentine's note was written in 1415 and was from Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife and was written from the Tower of London.
