I've been writing my own comics for a few years now and guys like Steve Niles keep me doing it when nobody else seems to care. He wrote a little vampire comic called 30 Days Of Night, maybe you've heard of it? Steve was just another struggling comic geek before he made it big and now he's able to write his own ticket. Even being a big deal in Hollywood and on the comic scene Steve was kind enough to sit down with Our Worlds At War and do an interview!!

OUR WORLDS AT WAR: So what’s going on in the world of Steve Niles?

STEVE NILES: Work, work and more work. This weekend I’m working of Batman: Gotham After Midnight, Criminal Macabre: Cellblock 666 and a new Bernie Wrightson series for IDW called Dead She Said.

OWAW: This many years later does is still surprise you the impact of 30 Days Of Night? Why do you think that is?

SN: I’m constantly shocked. It was just a little vampire comic and then it exploded. I think people were just looking for a fresh approach and I guess they see that in 30 Days of Night. Works for me and Ben.

OWAW: So much of the book was cut out of the movie, why? Did it bum you out at all?

SN: Yeah, I was bummed at first, but then I learned that it’s all about compromise so I (and Slade) gave up some stuff like the opening of the comic to make sure we got the ending we wanted. In the end I know we got the best movie we could. There were a couple producers, one in particular, who wanted to change everything. I know you didn’t like the movie, but believe me, it took a lot of fighting to get what was up there.

OWAW: With all of the sequels and continuations, did you ever reach a point where you just wanted to put an end to the 30 Days story?

SN: I know the ending but I doubt I’ll ever reach it. In my mind the first three books 30 Days, Dark days and Return to Barrow are main stories. After that it’s more like the 30 Days soap opera which can go on forever as long as the excitement is there.

OWAW: How did Simon Dark come about?

SN: DC asked if I wanted to create something and I did. I came up with this weird Franken-kid who doesn’t have a clue who he is and lives in Gotham.

OWAW: Where did you get the idea for Simon Dark’s interesting look?

SN: The main sources were masked used to buffer the pian of burn victims. Everything else Scott came up with.

OWAW: As an old school Batman fan I must know, With Simon Dark existing in Gotham City, will he ever cross paths with the Dark Knight?

SN: Maybe, maybe not. The only way Simon Dark can survive on the book is by sales and sales are good for Simon (great in my mind) but DC wants it to do better or Simon Dark will be canceled. I’m sure if we chucked Bats in there, we’d sell more but I want to avoid that if I can. Batman is such a strong character. He tends to take over books. I put him in a Creeper series I did and he almost took that one over.

OWAW: The debate rages over paper comics vs online comics, where do you fall on the subject?

SN: I like holding a comic in my hand and I know I won’t pay to read a stinkin’ comic online, so my vote is no. Online is great for something. Reading a comic is not one of them. With that said, I’m sure we’ll wind up there because we are heading towards becoming a paperless, non-reading, illiterate society and online comics will fit right in. I hope I can have my food directly inserting into my stomach soon too. All this chewing is tiring me out.

OWAW:Name one comic book character you wish you had created.

SN: Create? Batman. Hands down.

OWAW: What titles are you reading now? Why those?

SN: Not a lot of titles I follow but I do follow creators like Charles Burns and Dan Clowes. I read anything my Mark Millar (he knows how to stir shit up) and Ed Brubaker (Best Crime Writer right now). I will also pick up the occasional Grant Morrison book.

OWAW: Tell us something about Steve Niles that would surprise people.

SN: I’ve answered this question many times before. No? Not a surprise? Okay, let me see…I’ll eat just about anything. I love Sushi and I’ll even eat the Sea Urchin.

OWAW: One literary character you’d like to have dinner with. Why?

SN: Tarzan, because he’s tear the shit out of the restaurant and I would laugh and laugh.

OWAW: Are you scripting any original films? Is that something that interests you?

SN: Working on one right now. With the writers strike over I can start hitting the bricks again so I might have something to announce soon.

OWAW: People are really pissed about Marvel’s decision with Spider-Man and the whole erasing of his history. What’s your feeling on it?

SN: I feel the only way Marvel can get press is to make trouble in lieu of actually putting out good books. Spiderman unmasking, Captain America dying, now Cap with a gun, and so on. The only time we hear about Marvel is when they are “controversial”. How about just telling a good story? Marvel has some of the best talent in the industry in Bendis, Millar, Brubaker and don’t even get me started on the artists. So much great talent being used on cheap gimmicks. It’s really sad. Corporate and sad. As far as the Peter and Mary Jane thing….if you can’t tell a good story with them married, then you probably won’t be able to with them single.

SN: Nope. I love them.

OWAW: As somebody who’s made it, whats the best advice you can give somebody trying to make it?

SN: I always say the same thing, because it’s the only thing I did that seemed to have payed off…never give up. Just never, ever give up.

OWAW: When you pass on, what do you want your legacy to be?

SN: Even if it’s just a tiny bit, I’d like to think I had an effect on comics and horror. We’ll see. I still have a lot of time to do something crazy and blow the whole legacy thing completely.

KNIGHT RIDER REVIEW

*WANTED TO HAVE A PICTURE HERE BUT THE NBC SITE JUST WOULDN'T HAVE IT.

So I know me saying that the Knight Rider movie on NBC on Sunday sucked is a silly statement. Of course it sucked, the old Knight Rider wasn’t exactly the greatest thing to ever hit the airwaves, so the awfulness of it isn’t my problem. My problem is that it’s so badly written and so full of clichés that it doesn’t feel human. Instead it seems like somebody punched some ideas in a computer and it spit out every shitty action show cliché of the last 30 years. I won’t do a normal review I’ll just list the clichés.

The main bad guy is British with a snarky sense of humor.

His henchmen are all cool looking guys with guns. The main computer “whiz” looks like he should sing for Weezer

The scientist they are after is quirky with crazy white hair and brilliant but nobody says what he’s done.

The scientist has an equally brilliant but “estranged” daughter who is also hot.

KITT can change what he looks like on the outside and he rebuilds himself as soon as he gets damaged, the only explanation they give is “Nano technology”.

The hero of the piece is a superbuff all American looking guy named Michael who was once an army ranger in Iraq (yet ANOTHER media nudge nudge about the war). When we first meet him he’s in bed with two girls that look like playboy playmates. He also doesn’t want to get involved at first, the antihero strikes again. He had also been a bad kid.

Michael is an extreme-racer and his sidekick and mechanic is plucky, sarcastic and kooky. They owe money to a local mob guy (for reasons they don’t explain) but that all magically vanishes by the end.

There is of course some history between the daughter of the scientist and Michael

There is wacky banter between the alpha male Michael and the more cerebral KITT car.

You think the scientist father is dead at the beginning but of course he isn’t.

There is a cop who does nothing in the show but IS a female black lesbian. Yep, all PC counts have been hit.

It turns out Michael is the son of the original Michael Knight and his mother helped work on the original KITT car

Michael’s mom is killed, they had been estranged, thus giving him more of a brooding, tortured hero edge

Just when it seems everything will be ok something goes wrong and all seems lost until Michael hatches a crazy, last minute plan that couldn’t possibly work….BUT DOES!!!

At the end they ask Michael to head up the new one-man-and-car ideal, he refuses.

Michael and the daughter talk about how they love each other but can’t be together. He actually uses the term “two different worlds”.

The original Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) appears at his wife/Michael’s mother’s funeral and gives him a talk about how one man can make a difference. As soon as his speech is over, he walks away.

Michael agrees to be the new driver and heads off to his first mission. The cop is involved by working with the Knight foundation, the girl runs the technology with her father that she’s now down with and the plucky comic relief mechanic is also on board. Everybody is happy.

This list of clichés alongside the wooden dialogue and awful acting made this almost un-watchable. The only thing that was ok was the car looked cool and Val Kilmer did a good job with the voice. I really hope this doesn’t become a TV show.

GEEK NEWS FOR 2/18/08

Hey guys, what's up? So here's the geek news for this week, Iann and I managed to dig up some cool shit, including tons of toy photos from Toyfare. So you guys dig in to the geek news, Iann was kind enough to leave me some blueberries I must attend to.

Apparently Star Trek has been moved from a Christmas 2008 release to May 2009. I don't really care but I thought some might.

The really super annoying vampire in 30 Days Of Night (Danny Houston) has been tapped to play Stryker in the Wolverine movie. This is him, along with a shot of Hugh Jackman.

In news that's made Iann so excited he almost peed himself (which I do so I don't see the issue), John Landis is doing a movie about William Gaines. Gaines put out Tales From The Crypt comic and Vault Of Horror back in the day. Not only did he put out those amazing books but he also was one of the only people to stand up to Fredrick Wertham when he attacked comics in the 40s. Iann can't wait for this.

The great HD-DVD Blu Ray war is over and Blu Ray has won. All you chumps that bought HD-DVD are fucked now. I'm investing in Apple TV plus my docs and 40s serials don't come on either format.

In "Oh brother kill me" news, the hacks that scribed the lame awful SAW movies have now been tapped for the Hellraiser remake. Once Clive Barker left they should have shut the whole thing down.

20 QUESTIONS WITH JADE JOLIE!!

The adult film world has been pushed back into the forefront of the American consciousness on a scale we haven't seen since the 80s. Part of that resurgence has been the "alt-porn" or "punk-porn" scene that has sprung up on the web and made it's fame by taking girls that might not be seen as typical or standard and creating full fledged sex symbols out of them. From that world comes Jade Jolie, a pretty, smart, exhibitionist with a penchant for nihilism and stinging sense of humor. Jade was kind enough to do an interview with Our Worlds At War and fill us in on her views of porn, music and life in general.

OUR WORLDS AT WAR: So, what's new in the world of Jade Jolie?

JADE JOLIE: Well starting off much more porn, my new website jadejolie.com (coming soon), and the Girls of Wolfpac vol. 2 with me doing a body suspension (not the pussy rope bondage bullshit), I’m talking 4 hooks through my back 10 ft in the air, deep throating, fucking, and uh more fucking!

OWAW: Between Burning Angel, Godsgirls, Suicide Girls, etc, the "Punk Porn" thing has really taken on a life of its own. Why do you think that is?

I just think that times are slowly but surely changing and you don’t have to be a blond with double D tits, fake tanned fake orgasm girl to be a hot porn star. The business still hates on tattooed girls but is slowly conforming to us freaks.

OWAW: On one side of the adult film argument you have women saying it empowers women, others say these films and websites exploit and demean women. Where to you fall? Do you think that both arguments have merit or is one simply insane?

JJ: Opinions are like assholes everyones got 'em and they all stink. If you aren't in the porn industry you have no room to say it's demeaning or anything cause the reality is they have no clue. If your doing something you think is demeaning, then your a dumb ass. I don’t care what people think or say as long as I’m ok with what I do then all is well.

OWAW: A lot of these "Punk Porn" sites are tied in with music. Does music play a huge part in your life? What types do you most enjoy? What bands are moving you right now?

JJ: It’s crazy how powerful music really is. It influences so many people its ridiculous. If it weren't for music, I wouldn’t be doing porn as stupid as that sounds. I started off at the ripe age of 18 touring with the band Wolfpac as part of their stage show stripping molesting female fans on stage, and just being an all around naughty girl. That slowly moved into me doing porn. I enjoy good ole dirty punk rock, old school rap (none of that trendy new talentless bullshit), 80s music, stoner music, mostly old stuff. The bands moving me now and for most of my life of course are Wolfpac, Insane Clown Posse, The Misfits, The Descendants, Face to Face, Green Day, Rancid, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, I liked System Of A Down (when their first album came out), The Cro Mags, and basically the songs I put on my myspace page will sum it up, when asked this question my mind draws a blank.

JJ: All of it is really me. I am a dirty slut and I’m not afraid to show people who I am and what I really am about.

OWAW: With sexuality being so central to our lives and implied sex seemingly acceptable by the public, why do you think pornography has such a venomous taboo around it?

JJ: Because everyone is dumb and the majority of people are too worried about being politically correct. And most people wish they could be that open about sex.

OWAW: How did you get involved with the adult film world?

JJ: I’ve always wanted to be a porn star, its kinda odd. Daddy Long Legs my good friend from the band Wolfpac sent pics of me to Joanna Angel of Burning Angel and she asked if I’d like to be in her next feature called Porny Monster, a spoof of the movie Party Monster and I said fuck yea. It was with two guys in a bathroom and anal sex is definitely involved.

OWAW: Much to my surprise having been a nerd my whole life, being a nerd right now is very cool. Are you a nerd? What's the nerdiest thing about you?

JJ: I am a nerd, no one liked me in high school and even now I can count on one hand who my real friends are. Most people think its cool to say they were nerds, your so right. But I am the real deal, I ate lunch alone. and the kids all thought I worshiped Satan. The nerdiest thing about me, huh, well id rather sit at home on a Friday night and read a book than do what the cool kids do. I’ll never fit into the cool kids no matter what, I'm not programmed that way. Oh yea I loooooove star wars. If that doesn’t convince you then I don’t know what will!

OWAW: Give an example of the best and worst thing you've experienced being involved in the adult film world.

JJ: Well I haven't had a bad experience yet, just have had to deal with a lot of the “well we’d hire ya but that tattoo….” No one like ink in the adult industry. The best has been working with Joanna Angel, shes truly a great girl and shes really smart. She’s my favorite person in the business.

OWAW: Name one celebrity you'd like to slap and why

JJ: I’d like to slap all those rich whiny fucks. They all annoy me except for Edward Norton, I have a strange obsession with him.

OWAW: Favorite book? Why?

JJ: I read a lot, so it’d be hard to narrow down one favorite book so ill give you a couple. World War Z and The Zombie Survival Guide By Max Brooks are both two books that everyone needs because the zombies are coming and your ass better be ready for them!!!!

Well, a lot has come up and I've missed a lot of sleep because Iann keeps demanding I show this to you now. I hope you dig it because I am tired of staying up on nuts and water to bring it you!!!

First up it looks like the Watchmen maybe over before it even gets released. I don't know why it took this long but 20th Century Fox has filed a lawsuit against Warner Brothers claiming they have exclusive rights to do a film version of Watchman. It's apparently a cease and desist order so WB might have to shut Watchman down

In further lawsuit news, Bob Shaye of New Line just watches the ink on his settlement with Peter Jackson dry when the Tolkien Estate has filed a lawsuit. Apparently the money grubbers over at New Line owe Tolkien 7.5% of the back end of all three movies. Tolkien's estate is so pissed they want to discontinue and property development for film which may end the idea of a Hobbit movie.

The Cohen Brothers have been tapped to direct the film adaptation of Micharl Chibon's book The Yiddish Policeman's Union. Iann loved Chibon's book The Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay and he seems way amped on this.

Michael Bay has finished writing Transformers 2...must have been an exhausting 8 minutes.

Apparently David Murray has stepped out of the role of Destro for the GI Joe movie and has been replaced by Dr. Who's Christopher Ecclestonia. Here's a photo:

In further news that has Iann testing pipes to see if they're strong enough to support his hanging corpse: Lion King director Julie Taylor has cast Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess for the Spider-Man musical with music done by The Edge from U2. Yeah, I know, whatever.

Apparently not being happy with shitting all over the Star Wars legacy with episode I-III there will now be a full length animated movie that comes between Episode I & II all about Anakin. Here's a picture, drink in the suck.

In sad news Steve Gerber the creator of Howard The Duck has passed away.
