Otherwise, Barbie would've lost her identity.

On the other hand, Barbie herself has evolved from a fashion/model doll into a blank slate for almost any role a woman could assume. Maybe integrating these new forms wouldn't be that much of a stretch.Jeff Pidgeonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09480545918063778031noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37568007.post-46561985693028930052007-01-02T07:02:00.000-08:002007-01-02T07:02:00.000-08:00I had to do a lot of market research on the Bratz ...I had to do a lot of market research on the Bratz and Barbie lines while working for a game company a couple of years ago, and I came away from it thinking Mattel had really dropped the ball sometime in the late 80s. They've lost shelf space ever since that time.

Mattel had a vice grip on that market so they chose to flood the stores with meaningless pink product, instead of listening to trends and the greater pop culture. The Bratz dolls reflect the current interest in urban hip-hop culture, more accurately reflect the racial make up of the US, and are designed to make it harder to lose the parts (mentioned in the article). They've got a modern "extreme" look we see in a lot of collectible art toys.

They also tap into the fascination with that "Ghetto Fabulous" look that little girls are drawn to today. Compared to these macrocephalic club girls Barbie looks like a prairie schoolmarm.

And you just can't minimize the impact of something being new. Kids love new things. The Bratz will make their dough and be gone, like all super trendy toys, but Barbie had better have a plan for a comeback when the Bratz tide goes out again. That Pink aisle at TRU was a long time ago.Tom Doughertyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04957278460932227241noreply@blogger.com
