Awesome and Beautful London skyline using fruit and veg Art

An artist has used 26 different types of fruit to recreate the London skyline.

Carl Warner and his team of five model-makers spent three weeks crafting the famous London landmarks out of foods ranging from melons and tomatoes to asparagus.

They carefully sculpted the buildings - while all the time fighting the challenge of how to keep the fresh and highly perishable fruit and vegetables looking their best for the final image.

After gluing it all together they then took this stunning image… before munching on the most impressive salad bar you have ever see.
In the image the face of BIG BEN is through slices of lemon while THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT is created with a mix of asparagus, green and runner beans subtly mixed with baby sweetcorn to depict the intricate stonework of the political landmark.

THE LONDON EYE has green beans as spokes and its pods carefully crafted out of baby plum tomatoes and the GHERKIN is manufactured from two types of melon and embedded with green beans - we can't help but think they missed a trick there.

NELSON'S COLUMN is made from a cucumber with baby courgettes and a carrot teamed with a monkey nut and almond while ST PAUL'S CATHEDRAL has been given a modern day food makeover, with the spire being created from roundels of carrot, yellow and green courgette and baby leeks. The famous dome designed by Christopher Wren in the 17th century, has been transformed through the use of a melon, while the impressive columns have been crafted out of baby sweetcorn.

TOWER BRIDGE has pineapple piers with celery and shredded wheat towers and the TOWER OF LONDON is comprised of a selection of breadsticks and spelt crackers while the intricate brickwork has been constructed from mini shredded wheat.

THE EMBANKMENT is depicted through panini encrusted walls, punctuated by the iconic Thameside lampposts which are constructed by onions wrapped in vanilla pods for the lamps, asparagus for the posts and mackerel for the ornate fish plinths.

This edible version of the London skyline was specially commissioned by the Good Food channel. Spokesperson Roopa Gulati said: "This is a stunning image which has quite literally transformed the London skyline through good food proving that fun with food in a creative and light-hearted way is the way forward."

Mixing the staggering beauty of pure art with a precision and dedication of great science.

It reads contradictory and conflicted: the art of science/science of art – the mixture of the logical and methodical with the imaginative and emotional.

But science and art – or, if you’d prefer, art and science – have held hands, if not as close friends, for a very long time. Greek and Roman artists followed often strict guidelines considering the correct mathematical proportions of the figures in their frescoes and sculptures, Japanese woodblocks were as much about mechanical precision as they were about the subject being printed, the Renaissance was all about using science to bring a literal new dimension to painting, and then you have the work of Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka.

Everything you see below is made from glass...
No, you haven’t heard of Leopold or Rudolf Blaschka – but you certainly should have. Unlike the Greeks and the Romans, the Japanese Ukiyo-e artists, Michangelo and Leonardo, Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka aren’t well-known outside of either esoteric or scientific circles.

Which is what makes them so remarkable: they mixed the staggering beauty of pure art with a precision and dedication worthy of great scientists.

Recreating Nature in Glass - Looking Through a Glass, Darkly

Leopold and Rudolf were glass artisans – possibly some of the greatest, ever. They weren’t concerned with platters and goblets, lampshades and windows. Nope, Leopold and Rudolf created nature.
Simplified, here’s the story: Harvard Professor George Lincoln Goodale wanted examples to help teach botany, but the problem was plants have a tendency to … well, die. Sure, you could preserve some specimens but lots of species just don’t look the same after being dried – the plant version of stuffed and mounted. Yes, you could try using paintings or even photography but plants are – and here’s a surprise -- three dimensional. So what Professor Goodale did was ask the Blaschkas to create detailed glass plants to help him teach his students about real ones.
What the Blaschkas did, was more than just recreate plants: they created astounding works of not only scientific accuracy but pure, brilliant, art. Even the simplest of their efforts is deceptively unencumbered… a sign of their genius as their reproductions don't resemble the botanical model – they look EXACTLY like them, created by hand, in fickle and fragile glass, and all in the period 1887 to 1936.
What’s even more impressive is how many they created - more than 3,000 models of some 850 species – many of which can be seen on display at Harvard while many others are being painstakingly restored. But the Blaschkas didn’t stop at mere plants. Plants are relatively simple subjects and there are much deeper challenges out there - creatures so rare and fragile that very few men have ever seen them in their delicate flesh (even more frail than the glass the Blaschkas used to recreate them).

When the reproductions below were conjured in the late 19th century only a few marine explorers and a few lucky seaman had seen any of them. Octopi, urchins, sea cucumbers, anemones, jellyfish, cuttlefish – they were too rare, too fragile, to be seen outside of their briny homes. That is until the Blaschkas.

I wish there was some way to request a moment of silence. I wish there was some way to ask you to stop reading this and look at the pictures here and at other places of the web. I wish there was some way for you to have a nice glass of wine, put on some nice music – maybe Bach, who also mixed science and art – and just admire the care, the craft, and the pure art the Blaschkas created.

Other Astonishing Amalgams of Science and Art

The Blaschka brothers left an inspirational legacy. Josiah McElheny – a recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant – is a kindred spirit to the Blaschkas, another mind-blowing artist who works in the whimsical and temperamental medium of glass … and the disciplined domain of science.

McElheny’s works -- like that of the Blaschka brothers -- take inspiration from the universe around us, and there is no better example than the key moment seen below. In many ways this is a perfect place to stop: the Blaschka brothers created perfect artistic reproductions of nature to teach science, and McElheny created a sculptural interpretation of the ultimate act of creation, as discovered by science: the Big Bang.

Weirdness factor: High.
Todesfee has collected in this set a whimsical sculptures made from not so funny material: scrap military metal, left from the Yom Kippur War (Mount Bental was the site of large-scale tank battles in 1973)

She writes: "The Golan Heights is a plateau on the border of Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. The Syrians attacked the Golan with 1,500 tanks and 1,000 artillery pieces. Israel countered with only 160 tanks and 60 artillery pieces. The long stretch of valley in between Mount Bental and Mount Hermon became known as the Valley of Tears. The 100 Israeli tanks were reduced to seven under extreme enemy fire. However, the Israelis managed to take down 600 Syrian tanks in the process. The Syrians eventually retreated, but not without inflicting heavy casualties on Israel."

Kinetic Sculptures of Andrew Smith
Andrew Smith sculptures bubble, click, chime, make all kinds of highly sophisticated movements and endlessly entertain. And yes, they are made mostly out of metal - some found in military surpluss yard. Here is the "Bubbler":

We asked Andrew a few questions, and so he shares with us:

"People often ask me how I get the ideas for creating my Sculptures. The truth is, I usually don’t know what a sculpture will be until it is actually in the process of being built. I approach my work with a very wide expectation of what it may become, and I try to allow myself to let it go in the direction it wants to go.

Most of it is trial and error, a kind of "form follows function" construction process. If an element is not working or just doesn’t do what I had hoped, I will cut it off and try something else."

"I enjoy the raw creativity in this process. I am constantly observing the world around me seeing things that capture my attention. Sometimes I will try to incorporate these elements into my art somehow or it will spark an idea that leads to another idea and so on. My strongest pieces are usually the ones I had the most fun making. Art doesn’t always have to be serious, political or even emotional. Sometimes it can just be fun. "

"Sometimes when people look at my Kinetic or Rolling Ball Sculptures they will ask, “What does it do?”
I usually answer, “It’s doing it.”

"Grandfather Time" clock is an intricate "rolling ball" contraption. Every 15 minutes the ball is released into the track and as it reaches the bottom it strikes a single chime.

When Art and Knitting Needles Collide

Knit your way out of stress and anxiety - into a more ordered universe of sophisticated yarn, crochet and lace patterns. Here are the weirdest knitting projects we could find...

Word of advice: finish your projects! The unfinished knitting projects tend to increase entropy ten-fold and fill all the space allowed for them - these misshapen lumps of yarn can breed in the dark corners voraciously.
Let's start with the Biggest Knitted Sculpture - a pink bunny, big enough to be spotted from the Earth's orbit:
