Let me make sure I have this white elephant/gag gift thing straight.

With the white elephant I'm supposed to find something around my house I don't want anymore, take the time and trouble to wrap it and give it to somebody else...who will gift me with something equally worthless.

Call me crazy but when an object in my house falls into the "don't want it anymore" category I tend to either give it or sell it to somebody who does want it, or throw it away. It's always tough for me to come up with a gift in this category.

And then there's the always popular gag gift--where I'm supposed to take the time and money (both always at a premium) to go out and find a gift for somebody. A gift they actually don't want. And they'll do the same for me.

I don't care what the economy is doing. If Americans are actually still observing these traditions we have it far, far too easy.

A Scattershot Post On Guns, Part 1...

Talked about guns on this site every now and then, figure it's time to get into it a little more. The idea comes from the delightful Rightwing Sparkle, whose own decision to not become a victim I stumbled across over at Ace of Spades. I particularly loved this bit...

See what Obama has done? He has taken a pro-gun control Republican who never
liked guns at all and made me a gun owner, gun rights, and gun carrying anti-gun
control chick.

I'll bloviate on the entire phenomenon of the Magic Negro's election actually spurring gun sales tomorrow or the next day or when I feel like it--if I ever do. Tonight's post is more personal.

Growing up in the Ozarks I was surrounded by guns. My father kept a beat up old .22 rifle/410 gauge over-and-under long gun in his closet. Neither he nor I ever hunt deer but lots of people in my community did and still do (a nearby small town actually closes school during the first few days of regular rifle season). Guns were always around. During the mid '80s when I was in high school older students would drive to school with a rifle or shotgun in the gun rack in the back window of their trucks. The local FFA chapter had a gun safety and shooting course, kids (mostly, but not exclusively, boys) would walk around campus with rifles. The Brady Campaign would probably have a conniption, but those kids would no more think of firing those guns at another human being than they would think of flying to the moon.

I went to college, fell under the spell of the usual lefty professors. I followed the track of "if you're 20 and you're not a liberal you have no heart, but if you're 40 and you're still a liberal you have no brain." I become mildly, non-specifically in favor of gun control but mostly just spouted off some slogans and never gave it much thought.

As I got older I looked at things differently. I don't have much interest in deer hunting, no. Not because I'm afraid of killing Bambi but because getting up at 4 a.m. and going out to freeze my ass off in the woods isn't my idea of a good time. But some friends of mine--many part of my old D & D group--became interested in guns for other reasons. For self protection. For the sheer joy of target shooting and plinking. And out of the sheer, nasty, not-so-passive passive-aggressive joy of exercising a fundamental right that actually pisses of a lot of smug, arrogant socialists. You presume to tell me I can't have a gun? Fuck off, I'll go buy two just to annoy you!

Didn't buy a gun during my marriage, however. When you're married in general and married to a manic depressive alcoholic psycho particularly you to pick your battles, and this wasn't one of mine. Plus, we didn't have the money for most of our marriage. Finally--and this is a big one--the way my wife was the last year and a half or so of her life a gun was the LAST thing we needed in that apartment. I'm all for the idea that "ever law abiding man (or woman) should be armed," but I'd amend that to say "every law abiding sane man or woman."

But about six months after the wife assumed room temperature I began researching firearms, and not too long after I purchased my handgun--the Sig Sauer P229 (mine is the 9mm version, more rounded trigger guard than shown and no rail). Damn it was fun to shoot! You can feel the craftsmanship in it. Yeah, with my wife about six months dead it may have been a bit of "retail therapy"--buying something to distract myself from grief--but I've certainly never regretted it.

Next up--a shotgun, an FN 12 Guage pump action police shotgun (can't find a good picture on the internet, at least for the amount of time I'm willing to put into it). I like shooting skeet and because it's hard to miss at short range in an enclosed space a shotgun is in many ways your best bet for home defense. Plus, dear God, the type of ammo you can get for it! Tear gas, armor piercing, nonlethal, "piranha" ammo (shoots sharp little tacks, absolutely chews up anything in the blast path), FLAMETHROWER AMMO THAT SHOOTS OUT A HUGE FIREBALL....

OK, little too excited there, but I've changed my pants. Back to my ramble.

And then? Hey, if you're gonna go, go all out...a Bushmaster AR-15. Sure, why not? With all the rails, lights, scopes, slings and lasers you can put on it it's like a Barbie Dream House for adult men. Easy to shoot, light recoil yet strikes like the mailed fist of God.

And then...life got in the way. Really sucks when work and family and other obligations interfere with your hobbies, doesn't it? I bought a house, I started dating...I barely touched a gun for about two years.

Then came mid-September of this year, and it started to look like the Magic Negro might actually ascend to the Cherry Blossom Throne. As I say we'll concentrate on the subject of Obama and gun sales another time, but suffice it to say that the idea of a president with such a record of opposition to Second Amendment rights (and, worse yet, possibly a like minded filibuster-proof Senate) was disturbing. In October I took the long delayed step of getting my concealed carry permit. The class was informative and fun, so much so that I took the NRA Intermediate Pistol Course from the same instructor. I was determined to be both a safe gun handler and an accurate shot. Purchased this nice concealed carry coat from Sig Sauer and I was off to the races (I'll invest in a decent gun belt and inside the waistband holster next year). I have a cheap pawn shop nylon holster that I occasionally carry with a longer coat. Probably buy a smaller, lighter pistol next year as well--the 229 is great but it's heavy and a little large.

Nowadays I carry more days than not. In a small farming town with a comparitively non-existent crime rate. Why? Because I don't know that it'll always be so peaceful and crime free. Because the day you feel safest is often the day you'll die or be robbed. Because I want to die in bed as an old man, and I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by six.

Because it's my right, and anybody who doesn't like it...from the President-Elect on down...can kiss my ass.

If you're a rich guy, remember: You're always being targetted. You're always being evaluated. Your strengths, your weaknesses, always being assessed. You're being sought after, yes, but it's in the same way a 12 point buck is sought after about this time of year in the Ozarks. And once you're caught...well, the buck may get better treatment.

I've made no bones about the fact that I hope someday to be wealthy--or at least a lot more comfortable than I am now--but articles like the one above almost make me grateful for my comparitively modest income and bank account. Whatever interest my current or any past girlfriend (or even my late wife) may have or has had in me, it's hasn't been because of my money.

Of course men are equally capable of pursuing women for shallow reasons. But compared to the artifice, the deception, the twisted morality and shaky self-justification that golddiggers use in pursuing rich men, the boorish, juvenile, "as-long-as-my-face-is-around-you'll-always-have-a-place-to-sit" approach of your average frat rat to the hottest chick in the bar seems downright sincere.

The Cowardice Of Aiming At Soft Targets...

I'm sure it gives you a wonderful outlet to bitch at religious people who voted yes on Prop. 8 in California, gets your panties partially untwisted. And if putting on some bad theater on some soundstage somewhere keeps you occupied and prevents you from ripping the cross out of some old woman's hands, well, so be it. Knock yourselves out.

But it seems to me you're hitting the soft targets. Christians (and particularly Mormons) voted yes on Proposition 8, but you know who really voted for it? By a supermajority? BLACKS. And having read a bit about the opinions of young black males, I'm betting that they're a demographic group that was especially represented in the yes-on-Prop-8-crowd.

So, here's what I suggest you do--grow a pair (and get them out of your partner's mouth) and go down to South Central L.A. Find a group of young black males, preferably wearing primarily blue or red or maybe even Raider's football colors. Go up to them and start getting in their faces about the issue.

Let me know how that turns out for you. Or if you're in no position to do so, at least have your next of kin send me a note about it.

OK, let's make this really simple. I'm introducing a proposal for a new federal program (because we certainly need one). I'm calling it T.A.R.P.--the Terrorist Appeasement Relocation Program.

It's almost 5 a.m. and I'm insomnia ridden and I frankly don't give that big a shit about this bogus program I just pulled out of my ass that will never actually happen, so I don't have the details, specifics or any numbers on the actual costs. What I do have is one central idea:

Everybody who opposes waterboarding, the internment program at Guantanamo Bay, "harsh interrogation techniques" or generally doing whatever it takes to get vital information out of captured terrorists should immediately be relocated to New York City or Washington D.C.

Seriously, we'll pay, oh, let's say, X amount of dollars of your moving expenses. But move to one of those two cities. Now.

That way, when the inevitable biological attack or dirty bomb detonation occurs, YOU PEOPLE can be the ones to absorb the germs or radiation.

Abject Humiliation For Most British Cops, Pure Heaven For The Handful Of Foot Fetishists...

I'm thankful we haven't reached this level of stupidity here in the U.S.--yet.

Yep, cops over in at least one British community will now be carrying flip-flops for women who go out nightclubbing and get too shitfaced to walk in their high heels. Had to check for a second to make sure this wasn't from "The Onion," but no, it's real. Comfortable footwear while drunk has become a British right.

Of course, I guess it could be argued that the Brits are damned either way they go. They can spend money on the flip flops or some drunken twit can sprain or break her ankle and go to an emergency room--where the national health care system will pay for her treatment. One of the dangers of nationalized health care: you end up subsidizing behaviors an otherwise sane society wouldn't.

And check out that picture of that police superintendent. Dignity surrenders. But then again, posing for that humiliating picture isn't going to be nearly as bad as his Friday and Saturday nights from here on in...helping sloppy drunk women out of their sweaty shoes and into flip-flops. You can almost hear the phrase "new personal low" echoing through his brainpan.

One last point. I've always wanted to visit Great Britain. I'd love to take the Jack The Ripper tour, visit Stonehenge, see all the sites and wonders of the land where at least some of my ancestors came from. Looking at this site, I think I'd better do it quick. If the Brits are facing an Islamic immigration invasion bent on Sharia law and yet they're focusing their attention on crap like the foot health of drunken sluts, well...I fully expect the country to be a Caliphate within a few generations.

A Few Thoughts On The New Front For The War On Terror.

1) First, let's play "Guess The Religion" of the terrorists who attacked India today (since the article doesn't actually say). Who could they have been? Whose followers of a peaceful religion could have done such a sick, twisted, cowardly thing?

Shintoists, I bet. Those Japanese monks are absolute demons when they get a hold of an automatic rifle or a hand grenade.

2) I heard on the radio a while ago that this was a Mujahedeen-style attack, meaning it wasn't a specific suicide attack, like strapping a bomb to yourself. Instead, the assailants simply picked a highly populated area, took in a lot of ammo and just kept firing until they were out of bullets or until the police finally took them down.

I'm grateful for a many things this Thanksgiving, but among the things I'm most grateful for is my CCW. I have to believe that if this sort of thing had happened in a country or state with several armed, law abiding citizens around the outcome might have been quite different, with considerably less innocent blood.

3) Pass the curry chicken. This is India's 9-11, or at least close enough. We all should stand with them. Today, we are all Indians.

Let's review here:

1) eharmony is a privately owned company. They are not a publicly owned utility, they are not a division of the government, it was started and maintained by private stockholders with private money. Used to be people running their own business were allowed to conduct it in a manner more or less as they saw fit.

2) I just put "gay dating sites" into the Google machine and literally came up with 1,010,000 hits. It's not as though those seeking such services have nowhere else to turn.

But no, a few idiots jump up and down and shout "me too! You have to let me in too!", get lawyered up and voila'...eharmony suddenly finds themselves being forced to conform to that agenda that doesn't exist..

FWIW, I too have been rejected by eharmony. In the early days of my internet dating phase, I tried their compatibility quiz. When they got around to questions about religion I answered quite honestly that I'm more or less an agnostic these days. Finished up the quiz, I got their boilerplate "sorry, we are unable to help you, good luck" message. A bit chagrining, frankly, but I didn't go run to a lawyer screaming "I'm telling! I'm telling! They're being mean to me!" over it.

Why do I have a feeling we'll be looking at a lot more of this sort of thing over the next four years?

Some Words To Think About In These Times...

OK, so conservatives got their clocks cleaned.

No doubt about it, we lost. Part of it was that the socialists ('cause at bottom, that's what they really are) ran an undeniably charismatic candidate. An empty suit but still, undeniably charismatic.

Part of it was Bush. I think he's largely done an unpleasant, thankless job the best anybody could when it comes to fighting terrorism but it's won him few friends and there's no denying he sucked on some other issues (the border and spending, particularly).

And part of it was McCain. Why vote for the faux democrat when there's a perfectly good real one right on the other side of the ballot?

So now we regroup. We rethink. We (hopefully, please God) rediscover who we are while the other side fucks up the economy, kisses foreign ass and makes the catastrophic blunder of trying to limit our gun rights. Trust me, it'll happen.

In the meantime, here's a speech from the greatest president of the 20th century that might help provide some direction. Not all of it is that relevant these days--we're a little past Vietnam and SALT accords--but that last bit, the last five or six paragraphs...well, I'll reproduce them here. Please forgive the goofy paragraph breaks blogger.com insists on putting in text when you put it in block quotes, if there's a way around that I haven't discovered it yet...

This speech came during an interesting time--March 1975. The prior autumn conservatives got their clocks cleaned, in part because the Republican party was in bad odor after Watergate. Reagan would run for President the next year but would lose to a moderate guy, basically decent but not an idealogue. Said decent non-idealogue in turn lost in the 1976 election. The Democrat who won fucked things up royally, with a presidency marked by a miserable economy and one humiliation from our enemies after another.

So Reagan came back in '80, beat that Democrat and ushered in a golden age, marked by low taxes, a stellar economy and winning the Cold War.

A former actor with real conservative values runs for the president once, fails, tries again four years later and knocks it out of the park.

I hope Fred Thompson is paying attention. I really do.

...California Gay Marriage. Or the lack thereof.

I live in Missouri and not California, a thing for which I thank whatever Gods there may be daily. But if I did live in Cali, truthfully, I'm not sure I would've bothered even voting on the damn thing. I don't care.

And gays o' California, I'm not sure why you do either. Assuming you are one of those who did marry during the brief window of opportunity, was anything really any different when you woke up on the morning of November 5th? You're presumably still with the man or woman you chose as your spouse, still living under the same roof, still just as happy (or not), still just as committed (or not). What's different?

Upset because you don't have the legal benefits rights of marriage? Spare me. You can go have a few minor changes to your will and fill out a power of attorney. It'll probably take the same amount of time as filling out a marriage license and you'll ultimately have the same privileges, the same bond to one another. Drop that straw man.

You can still live together. You can still love one another. You can still buy property together. If you've got any children from a previous hetero relationship I guess you can raise them together too. Hell, you can still call each other "husband and husband" or "wife and wife" for all I care.

You're not fighting for the right to any of that. You're fighting for one of the most elusive, the most difficult of all commodities and not a right at all--the approval of others. Think about it, that's what this is really about. You don't want a right limited to yourselves and your own behaviors and attitudes, like the right to speak your mind or carry a gun or be secure in your own person and property, true rights that don't require anybody else to do anything for you. You want everybody else in California to declare that they agree with you.

Good luck with that.

California...not just a judge or two, but ALL of California...has spoken. They're not going to play. Do what you want, but I'd recommend just dropping it now and tending to your own acre from this point forward.

And as for that brief, shining moment when the government did acknowledge your union, when you did have the HIGHLY overrated status of "marriage?" Consider the whole thing an object lesson. What the government gives you with one hand today it can take away with the other hand tomorrow. It's an object lesson that I suspect will be driven home to all of us, over and over again, during the next four years.

Myself, I have two salient points--on Bullets and Bullion--I think everybody should remember...

Anybody who feels strongly about the 2nd amendment...I cannot recommend strongly enough that you stock up now on ammo. I'm sure that Obambi will be as good as his word and he will "not come after our guns," which I'm betting he'll define strictly as"guns we already own." He'll refrain from doing this not out of any particular sense of honor or belief in the Second Amendment but because he knows that to do so would be a suicide mission for whatever "civilian national security force" he chose to send in. But he'll happily go after accessories (through another AWB) and I suspect he'll do everything he can to make ammunition more difficult and expensive to own. After all, if you've just shot your last bullet and can't find or afford any more...well, your gun has just become a glorified paperweight. Ammoman.com has great deals, I recommend grabbing while you can (and no, I am in no way affiliated with the site). If I may be allowed to plug another site, a good Missouri boy with whom I am also not affiliated, Mark at Summit Gun Broker is committed to arming America while it's still possible and he sells good guns as affordably as he can.

And bullion...I personally think it's a remarkable thing that you can still buy gold or silver bullion or coins with cash, hide them in your personal safe or some other secure place until you think the price has risen enough, and sell them--also for cash. No paper trail. Untraceable. Untaxable.

Of course, to do so without reporting the capital gains to the IRS would technically be tax evasion. And I could never condone or recommend such a thing.

Of course, if you'd rather not write out a check there are other ways to do it. Claim zero dependents and don't participate in your company's cafeteria plan. No IRA of any sort for you, invest in taxable securities. Don't claim medical deductions, daycare deductions, don't claim deductions for charitable contributions (not that pro-tax leftists are likely to contribute much to charity anyway). A little manipulating of your tax profile (manipulating that will, frankly, probably make for simpler bookkeeping anyway) and you'll be giving extra to Uncle Sucker in no time.

The problem is that the "tax me more" types don't really want to be taxed more themselves. They want that amporphous bunch of people classified as "the rich" taxed more. Should so-called progressives get into power you'll be amazed at how the definition of "rich" keeps getting defined downwards.

Item 3: Consumer alert! I cannot recommend Spaced: The Complete Series strongly enough. A BBC series that ran for two entirely too short seasons around the turn of the century, as the ads say it's sort of a combination of "The Simpons," "The X-Files" and "Northern Exposure," except with only the good parts of those series in the mix. Fast moving, funny, full of geek references and with great characterization. It does the "Moonlighting"/"Cheers" two-lead-characters-are-in-love-but-won't-admit-it-to-themselves-or-each-other thing better than any show I've ever seen. Go out and buy it now, and pick up a few copies for friends. And ad my name to the chorus begging for a third season some day, though truth be told I haven't started the second season yet. I'm afraid to set it going, because once I have it started I'll have to finish it and once it's completely over I'll be heartbroken. It's that good.

Now for my proposal for our next President, whoever he may be ('cause I know McAmnesty and the Magic Negro both hang on my every word). Call it the Steyn doctrine:

"No nation shall receive aid from the United States, whether that aid be financial or military, unless they maintain at least a replacement-level population growth, i.e., 2.1 babies for every woman. If a nation doesn't actually care enough about it's future to actually populate it, why should America care either?"

Note that per the second article, the now legendary "It's The Demography, Stupid," this knocks out foreign aid to most of Europe. Bye-bye to our Continental Betters. The savings to the U.S. budget will be enormous and within a few generations we won't have to listen to them telling the U.S. how we're supposed to vote. Paradise.

Let's take a fact that most people would consider to be unreservedly good news...say, 8000 soldiers are coming home from Iraq. Good news, right? Whether you think they should have been there in the first place or not, whether you think the objective of the mission was obtained or worth obtaining or not, any sane, rational person not consumed with hatred for all things American (and all things Iraqi, for that matter) would have to call a troop reduction of 8000 souls in Iraq a good thing. Anybody who has even the slightest affection for America would also have to call it a good thing that they're coming home in victory and not defeat, right?

OK, now you're the mainstream media. Take this unreservedly good news. Twist it. Turn it. Torture it. Shake it like a British nanny with a baby. Waterboard it. Take it out of context. Fold it. Bend it. Mutilate it. Make it endure the ultimate agony, a Michael Moore movie marathon.

Pretty soon, your unreservedly good news morphs into this.
