This is for everybody out there with a dream, and of course, I have to dedicate it to our new president.”

That was Mariah’s dedication to U.S. President Barack Obama last night (January 20, 2008) as she took the stage at the first ever Neighborhood Inaugural Ball at the Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. Mariah proceeded to sing her inspirational 1994 # 1 platinum selling song “Hero” in front of millions of attendees and TV viewers of the historic event. – Source: Mariah Carey Facebook page

Honestly, I don’t know if she was having a bad day, her once known “powerful” voice isn’t as “powerful” as 15 years ago when she first perform the song. Life in general is all about decisions, comforts and being practical. It's exactly like being in your favorite shoe store. If you're a person that likes shoes (like me), and if you see that taboo 4-letter word "S-A-L-E" on the shoe store display, you can feel moment you enter the store, you know you're fucked. It's because of the temptation of buying a pair that comes with it upon entering the store. Yes, you have the option of not going in, but come on....that don't usually happen now does it? You would still want to step in and look around to see if there is anything that you fancy. It's called giving in to temptation, and I know everyone as humans are guilty of it.

Firstly, there are decision to be made to pick one (or two), since almost every pair of shoes are on sale at the store. Life too is about making choices. Decisions are made based on the pros and cons of each choice. Choosing a pair of shoes is not rocket science, but choosing a decent pair that suits you well and that is long lasting is pretty much the same as deciding on a long term investment plan. In life, there are so many decisions to be made like which job, which insurance policy, which house to buy...the list is endless. When you choose a pair of shoes, you would also want it to last as long as they can and not have the soles come off just a week after purchasing it. You wouldn't want to hesitant into making a decision just because it looks nice, but the quality is lousy. You'll regret it later if you do that.

"Why I always have to choose? Can't I have all?...Arrgh!"

Now, when you see a pair of shoes that you like, you would want to try it on first. Pretty much like starting a relationship with someone. You would want to try out to see if it fits and if they are comfortable. Always remember, if fits well, it's not always necessarily comfortable. Most shoes has to be seasoned to feel extra comfortable. So before you go get married or something, it is necessary for both parties to feel comfortable with each other which requires time.

"Yes it fits perfectly!...but not really comfortable leh!"

Now lastly, it's about being practical. If you already have those pair of shoes in similar design or color, it's not really necessary to be getting another...unless it is a replacement for the worn out pair. Life is the same. It's all about being practical and not being spendthrift. Certain things are "nice to haves" while others are "must haves". Everyone one can do without the former unless they have a little bit more saved up and would like to reward themselves. People need to know the clear distinction of the two especially with the slowdown of the global economy.

So, the next time you walk into a shoe store, just remember these things. Who would have thought that shoe shopping and life can have so many things in common huh? I bet you would see things a little differently now.

Note: Pictures from GettyImages.com

The 2008 NYE Party @ Lanson Place

I know I know, this post is waaay overdue. Some of you have asked what I did for NYE this year and wondered why there isn't any photos up on my blog or even Facebook. Well, the reason is simple. I didn't post up anything sooner is because I didn't have the photos to begin with. Since there will be an ample amount of cameras there that night, I resulted to be the "superstar" for once and let others take the photos. I only got the photos today when I went back to the office as I was on a long leave since 27th of December last year (are you jealous?).

Anyway, this year my friends and I all rented a 3 bedroom service apartment, Lanson Place, in the heart of KL City. The booze was flowing like water and there was even 2 sheesha units which was really cool! I think the room had about 20+ people at one point as friends brought friends, which was great.

These are just a few sample shots or rather the more decent ones taken that night...

that's strawberry flavored sheesha...yumm!

"Haaapy Neeww Yeeeaarrr!!"

Since we're up on the 10th floor in a prime location, we could see the fireworks display from KLCC up close as well as from Jalan Bukit Bintang area. We partied until the next morning where we then had complimentary breakfast before heading home. There were a couple of casualties that night, some incidences and some photos which cannot be posted online even! But the main thing is everyone had fun...what a night it was!

* Click here for more less decent pictures from that night

Note: All photos are courtesy of Jek Tan. I wasn't prepared for it. It was a rainy night, and I was traveling back with her after a night out with some friends when it happened. She began to act weirdly, as though she is trying to tell me something. I just ignored and carried on. She reacted even more violently....choking, shaking, gasping for air...as though it was a sign that her time is up. Yet I pushed her to go even further, thinking that she was just being emotional and will come to her senses soon. Then it happened...the next day...she didn't respond to me calling. There wasn't a sound...not even a whisper. Is she dead?! I panicked and called for help. A friend came over to help me try "resurrect" her but to no avail. I called for the professionals and they came and took her away in hopes of reviving her. I pray that she will be well and that everything will be ok again...and that it doesn't cost me a bomb to fix my car!

My Little Hideaway

Have you ever got that special feeling when you were a kid, that whenever you are in a place, say a toy shop or a candy store, your eyes lit up...you feel like you're in wonderland, never wanting to leave...and that nothing else in the world matters? Well, for me, I have one such particular hideaway that has always been dear to me. It's not a toy shop nor is it a candy store...my hideaway has always been this particular record shop in Subang Parade. Yup, it always brings back so many memories, simply because I spent hours there after classes during my college days just listening to stacks and stacks of CDs without actually having to purchase any! Each time I'm there makes me feel like a kid in a toy store...never wanting to leave and I'll be so happy!

You see, this particular record shop used to be known as Pennylane. Back then, it was the only record shop I know that would actually allow you to listen to CDs without you purchasing it. Pennylane is small, simple and provides a very cozy environment for listening. Think of it like your local neighborhood pub. Not too commercialized, yet it draws back the loyal customers because of its simplicity and friendly customer service. Come to think of it, I used to frequent there so often that the owners always ask me how I am whenever I came by for a visit. Can you also imagine, how much I have spent purchasing CDs from there over the years? (yes I buy a lot...and I mean A LOT of original CDs....you won't even imagine!)

Fast forward 7 years later, Pennylane is no longer there, but it has been bought over by Rock Corner, a music store chain owned by Eastern Records. But even when Rock Corner took over the outlet in Subang Parade, they never expanded the size of the store, which kept the small cozy feeling I still like, unlike other Rock Corner outlets. Yes, even though it's now a place of a different name and interior, the feeling is very much the same each time I go there. It's funny because I don't get the same feeling for any other Rock Corner outlets I visit....maybe it's just nostalgic to me.

my little hideaway..

So today, I was in Subang Parade to meet a friend up. I was early by an hour, so I went to my favorite hideaway....and guess what?...I end up purchasing 3 CDs! Sigh!...I can't help it! It's the one place in Malaysia that I can spend like the whole day there if time permits.

The 3 CDs I purchased..."An Evening of Jazz with Cat", "Eriko Ishihara" & "Julia Duncan"

Oh...there is also another place which has a similar effect on me each time I visit Singapore too. This place called That CD Shop situated at Pacific Plaza on Scotts Road...the added bonus of this outlet is maybe because the promoters are cute and hot! Hehe!

So now you know if I'm feeling a little under the weather...you know where to find me. ;)

Chowtut Nights

The term "Chowtut" is frequently used amongst my group of drinking buddies from work. It simply means an overdose or the state of becoming super high on a certain substance. For example, you can say "That fella got really super chowtut yesterday!" which simply means he was fucking high yesterday. The substance can be of any sort...alcohol, drugs, sex, food...the list goes on!

Having said that, during the pass week, my friends and I had 2 chowtut sessions. The first was last Saturday night at Tao Modesto's at Plaza TTDI. You see, it's been a long while since we had one of these big drinking sessions. Actually, it was ever since that my colleague Jek had twins. Last Saturday was one of the few "passport" moments for him where he can get to go out drinking with us so we just have to utilize the moment. That night, we started off with 2 bottles of whiskey and ended up doing shots of different sorts. The night started off quiet as there were only a couple of us there at first. Then, as more people came, and the alcohol began to flow...things became more fun!

To be honest, after the drinking session, we went for supper at a nearby mamak but what happen after that was a total blur to both Jek and I. We didn't really remember much after that and I for one didn't know how I got home. Sound really scary actually. It's as though we were teleported back to our respective houses.

Click here for more pictures from Tao Modesto's

Then last Wednesday night, Jek wanted to clear his old wines and liquor to make way for a new stash which he bought recently. If you ask me, it's a darn good excuse for drinking. LOL. This time, I decided to play host and get people to come by my condo to wreck havoc. Again we started off slow with wines and then moved to whiskey. I whipped out a bottle of tequila from my stash and it was hit! I decided to down everyone with tequila shots. It's a new bottle mind you and by the night is done, there was only 1/4 of it left...and all these only through shots and no mixers! Imagine that!

the ammunition..

tequila shots

chowtut??

Anyway, it was a blast and I bet everyone had fun. No one really got chowtut that night actually, but Rabin was talking a lot of cock and we all were laughing non stop till wee hours in the morning.

Until then...click here to view more pictures from that night.

Absolut Masquerade

Look what I got all the way from London...

It's this year's holiday gift pack, and boy is it sexy. No, not because I'm happening, but because there are some really good Jazz acts that are really worth going to. On Wednesday, some colleagues and I decided to go to Sevenatenine for their Bar Night, which featured their international mixologist and also it's our excuse to finish up our bottle which was "parking" there since September. Also featured was a quartet group called G-String. Kinky as it might sound, they are actually quite good. Thanks Jolene for getting us a table right in front of the stage. We were later joined by my friend Michelle and Joshua to what was a nice night out.

Rabin & I

Chui & Sonia

Our bestest best friend, Mr. Johnny Walker

Rabin and his "Around the World" drink...he was gone after that

Michelle & I

G-String!

On Friday night, I was at Alexis Ampang together with Elisa and her friends for Ida Mariana. This is my first time listening to her perform and I must say, she is really good. Sorry about the blur images below though. Didn't have my camera with me then, so have to resort to using my mobile's camera which is practically useless for night shots. Us sitting quite a distance away didn't help either.

Ida Mariana

Then last night, I was at No Black Tie for another performance. This time it was Albert Sirimal (guitar/vocals), Badar (percussions/vocals) and a special guest saxophonist. They don't have an official name for their band though but they were really really good. They did really good Bossanova renditions of Carol King's I Can't Hear You No More, Lionel Richie's Stuck On You and even Michael Jackson's Human Nature which I thought was absolutely brilliant!

The unnamed band...which was really good

So there, my quiet and chilled out week filled with Jazz. I'm starting to believe that I am getting a bit too old for clubbing nights already. Don't get me wrong, It's not that I don't enjoy clubbing, I still do...it's just that going for a Jazz night out is simply more fulfilling.

New Zealand Natural Turns 5

Last Tuesday, New Zealand Natural celebrated their 5th year in Malaysia. Now with 12 outlets in total, it seems they only can become bigger in years to come. Being their interactive agency, we were invited to attend their anniversary celebration held at the Waterfront of Desa Parkcity. There was a jazz band, celebrities, good food...and of course UNLIMITED ICE CREAM!

There were games and prizes to be won as well. Integricity seemed to "clean house" when it came to the question and answer sessions (we should right? Since we did their stuff). Either that or no one really wanted to participate. There was also a treasure hunt to find hidden ice cream cups, a "guess the flavor" competition, as well as a New Zealand Haka war dance competition.

There was quite a turn out considering it was a work day..

The jazz band

Terence being fed ice-cream by a celebrity in "Guess the flavor" contest.

Can you spot the ninja? hehe..

Warren & Alex does the Haka war dance

"...to 5 great years!" - Yao Han, Kevin & Paul

The cake

NZN's latest Christmas Sundae creation

CONGRATS NEW ZEALAND NATURAL!!

Just looking at the pictures above, you can tell we had a good time. Yes, I really needed the weekend to unwind...chilling out, catching up with friends and just not think of work basically. On Saturday night, I met up with some friends for Moonshine at The Apartment KL, where Mia Palencia and Reza Salleh was performing. I must say, whilst the music is good, the venue isn't really built to stage this kind of performances. The ambiance isn't as good as say...No Black Tie or maybe because the positioning speakers and setup was not good. Nevertheless it was a nice event.

Mia Palancia (center) feat. So we all decided to party at TwentyOne for a bit. We were joined by Richard who is the manager of The Apartment and a friend of Su Ann and Zelly.

Zelly, Su Ann & Richard

The next day, I met up with Rabin, Loong Heng and his wife to support Team Malaysia at the A1GP at the Sepang Circuit. We manage to get free tickets for the grand stand area but it was packed to the brim and we have to settle for the secondary grand stand (for all you non-motorheads, Sepang has a dual grand stand area). No complains of the seating arrangement, since it was free!

Go Team Malaysia!!

All of us @ Sepang

Well, Team Malaysia did finish in third for the feature race which sent roaring cheers from within the crowd. Malaysia Boleh!

Phew! I actually feel more tired now after the weekend instead of recuperating. But I guess, everyone has a different way of relaxing...mine is just all about having fun and doing the things you like doing...nothing else matters.

If Only This Actually Happened...

I had a dream last night. It was a rather weird one, because it really seemed something out of a Hollywood movie. I swear I'm not making any of this up, but here's how it went...

I found myself in a train station...and of all places somewhere in Canada. I knew it was Canada because there was a flag somewhere in the background. Anyway, I was at a cafe nearby, presumably to catch the next train to some place. While sipping on my cuppa, I was approached by this attractive young lady (think Kristin Kruek) who asked if she could join me because she didn't want to sit alone. She had the most gorgeous eyes I've ever seen, cute pouty lips and long black silky hair...of course without hesitation I offered her the seat opposite me. She then introduced herself to me simply as Patricia. She didn't give a last name, but she looked to be of mixed parentage, Canadian Chinese I presume.

Anyway, we then chatted away and she told me she works as an air stewardess and was there to catch a train to the airport. I can't really remember in detail the conversations that we had, but I do remember giving her my business card and asked her to keep in touch somehow. Then the announcement of her train's departure suddenly was broadcast through the station's PA system. She told me she had to leave and wrote her number on the back of my business card and returned it back to me. Later, we both stood up, and I gave her a hug and said our goodbyes. I think I had a tear in my eye at that point...and I watched her board her train.

Soon after, I got up only to realize that it was just a dream...DARN IT! Imagine what it could be if something like that did happen in real life. Anyway, the sad part is...I CAN'T REMEMBER THE NUMBERS on the back of the card...Haha! =(

TGIF

IT’S FRIDAY! Finally. I’ve been extremely busy of late that I don’t even have time to update the blog. Thank goodness for the existence of micro blogging via Twitter so that people can still know that I’m still alive. Anyway ever since I returned from my holiday, it has been somewhat short of being “crazy”. So many projects, so many meetings and so many deadlines to meet. You can’t imagine how I long for a relaxing time this weekend. Right about now, my body needs to be refuelled with alcohol and relax with some chill out music. I always lived by these words “Work hard, play harder”. So it’s time to PARTAY!

Livin' It Up @ Hong Kong & Shenzhen

I just got back from a holiday in Hong Kong and Shenzhen for a couple of days and I must say, it was really good to be back there. Well, first of all, my trip was supposed to be during end of November, but was brought forward so that I can meet up with May Lynn there when she "transits" for 5 days, from Korea before flying back to KL. I was also initially supposed to go alone, and was supposed to be a purely shopping trip, but then Mike, my colleague decides to tag along as well. It's a good thing too as he used to work in Hong Kong for 2 years back in 2002, so he knows where the best places to go are.

So what did we do in Hong Kong and Shenzhen? Well, for me...like intended, it was a shopping trip. For Mike, I think he just enjoys being back for the food and the city after such a long time. I also manage to catch up with old friends as well as meeting new ones.

Well, I won't be writing a whole report on everything, I will just sum it up with lots of pictures as they always seem to say more anyway...

THE CITY...

awesome skyline via the Star Ferry

THE FOOD...

Pork dumplings stuffed with celery and vegetables with noodles

Braised beef la mien

Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun

Click here for more food pictures...

THE COMPANY...

I met up with May Lynn, Penny, Su-Lin + her family, Melor, Michael and also Vicky. What's really interesting was because, I have never met Melor and Michael prior to this trip. I used to liaise with them only through phone and emails while working in my previous company. Melor was based in KL before, but strangely enough, we've never met at all and Michael is based in Singapore all the while. Now both of them are based in Hong Kong. We kept in touched through MSN and also Facebook all this while (don't you just love technology?) and finally met for the first time at Discovery Bay at a restaurant overlooking the sea!

Mike, Vicky, Michael, Melor & I @ Discovery Bay

Mike, May Lynn, Penny & I @ La Qube, Lan Kwai Fong

SHENZHEN...

Mike, May Lynn, Penny and I went for a day trip to Shenzhen for shopping. It's about a 45 minutes ride by train to Lo Wu station, which is the border town between Hong Kong and China. We managed to get on-the-spot visa which entitles you for a 5-day pass into China. We expected a long wait for our visa, but to our surprise, it took us less than 10 minutes! Maybe because it's a weekday that we went. The visa costs HKD150 (approx RM75) in case you want to know.

After the border, we took the subway to Laojie station. So what's good in Shenzhen? Well...shopping of course. It's the land of the knock-offs, land of the pirates...anything you want to call it. These places sell Grade-A fakes and you can't tell the difference really. Just to illustrate what I mean - I saw this pair of limited edition Nike Footscapes Woven which cost around HKG1900 (approx RM950) at Lane Crawford in Hong Kong, and by comparison...I got the same thing (just of a different color) at HKD290 (approx RM145). Cheap isn't it?

On the bad side, Shenzhen is also known for its snatch theft. My friends and I actually witnessed a guy snatching a girls mobile phone while she was about to board the train! Then, we saw some ruckus amongst a group of people and some policemen! Talk about a dangerous place to be in....but I would still recommend anyone to go there for a day trip....just to shop...but nothing more.

Yatttaa!! - Hiro Nakamura wannabe..

Click here for more photos of Shenzhen...

AND THE SO CALL HAPPENING BITS...

In the end, I would say it was a memorable and awesome trip. And mission accomplished (for me...didn't I say it was a shopping trip??) ...I got 3 pairs of limited edition shoes - 1 from Hong Kong, and the other 2 from Shenzhen, Tees from Esprit and Bossini ranging from HKD39 to HKD79 per piece, Polo Tees from HKD 20 per piece, an Armani Exchange bracelet and souvenirs. It was all good...but tiring as well....but would I do it again?....HELL YES!

Introducing...Sayuki Matsumoto (松本さゆき)

Ok, so I just ran out of ideas on what my next blog entry would be and then I thought...let me share with you about a secret "obsession" that I once had...let me tell you about my "love affair"....Sayuki Matsumoto. She is very big in Japan and has a cult following (duh!) and if you just do a Google search on her, and then view through her photos, I'm sure you'll understand why guys (including me) go ga-ga over her. Now, some people I know...don't even know who Josh Wink is...but after I asked them to Wikipedia / Google him or "Higher State Of Consciousness" then they go..."OHHH...SO THAT'S JOSH WINK!". It's sad that people only remember him for that, but he has a lot of other good mixes too which I think wasn't really promoted well. Special thanks to Jamie for putting me on the guest list, although my supposed group of "kampung" I promised her didn't show up that night...hehe

Josh Wink in action @ Poppy

Olivia & I

On Saturday morning, I got up at 6AM because one of my good friend Adrian is getting married and we (the "heng tais") have to be at his place by 7AM to be "briefed" and ready to battle the "chi muis". Now it's an honor to be part of someone's entourage but it can also be "suffering" to some extend. It's a tradition that all of us "heng tais" have to endure several stupid tasks setup by the "chi muis" before the groom can get to his bride. We were very lucky that some of the task didn't involve eating anything.

All the "Heng tais"...ready for battle!!!

The "Chi Muis"...so ganas...got cane sommore!! =(

TASK 1: Wear underwear that spells out "WE R HERE 4 STELLA!"

This one reminded me of detention class back in high school!

TASK 2: All "Heng Tais" have to wax part of their leg

and this is the result of that, this morning...

can you see a square smooth patch on my leg?? =(

TASK 3: Sing a song and include words like "Stella", "Siew Yok" and "Por-por"

"Only Stellaaaa...."

After all that...they still didn't want to let us in...and still demanded more money. But well, like I said...we got it easy...so the groom paid up an undisclosed amount after all of us negotiated. We later went to church for mass, and to get the blessing from the church. At this point...all the "heng tais" was supposed to provide transportation to all the "chi muis" to church and back.

The bride and groom after church - CONGRATS ADRIAN & STELLA!

Church ended around noon and then there was lunch and also the tea ceremony. After that, everyone was tired and went back to rest for the dinner. I love wedding dinners. Not only you can get to eat good food, but it's also a good place to see the friends who have been missing in action for long periods. I got to catch up with my college buddies and also friends which I have not seen for such a long time.

The BFG Reunion with new members...

And of course how can a wedding dinner do without booze right? I for one was mixing red wine and whiskey all night. But well, there wasn't any major casualties but Kevin and Anthony (the best men) were definitely the "targets" of the night. All of us felt a bit short changed when the concert only lasted about 1 hour 30 mins. To make it worse, I think the venue was not made to hold acoustic events such as this as I personally feel the sound could have been better. Oh well, it certainly was an experience nevertheless.

After the concert, we adjourned across the street at Sevenatenine for drinks and to chill out.

Ee Lin, Suzanne & Evie

Zara & Evie

Evie & I

This last pic was purely for fun ya...so don't get any stupid ideas! After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me an assistant professor position in your department.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite Whitson's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at this time. Therefore, I will assume the position of assistant professor in your department this August. I look forward to seeing you then.

Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.

Sincerely,

Chris L.

I got to know Mei Yee about 5 years ago on the first day of work during my time at Wavex Technologies. It was both our first day at work then and I was a Senior Web Programmer and she was my Programmer. On our first day, we got to know each other as both our PC's weren't ready yet, and we were placed in a conference room together with 2 other new people. I best remember Mei Yee for taking sick leave just on the second day of work, and me and the 2 other people thought she quit because there was still nothing to do. But alas, she returned the next day, and since then a bond was formed. We kept in touch ever since, even after she left the company.

Ex colleagues: Chee Way & Mei Yee

I remembered my other colleagues (now ex colleagues) and I, used to tease and bully her on a daily basis because she was the only female in the team. We always joked about her switching boyfriends and never seem to settle down for one due to her high expectations (was it like 3 bfs??...lost count). Anyway, on Sunday, she finally found "the one" who meets all her expectations. I don't personally know William that well as I've only met him twice at most before they got married, but he seems to be a really nice guy and someone who can keep up with her high demands (hehe...kidding Mei Yee..). I'm really happy for you Mei Yee. So to the happy couple...CONGRATULATIONS WILLIAM & MEI YEE!!!

Cathy Nguyen

Who is she? Well, I just came across a video of hers by accident on YouTube today when I saw this cute girl performing a cover of Jason Mraz's "Lucky". The first thing that struck me was....she is cute! She performed it with another guy named Aj Rafael (Jason Mraz'z song is a duet with Colbie Caillat) in a bathroom because it supposedly gives them a "more acoustic" sound. And MY GOD...that voice!!! She is not only cute but this girl can also sing!....it was like a "love at first sight" moment!
