This was the Club’s first time to enter this competition and once again, as happened to many of our teams this year, the overall match was decided on the extra tie holes in the deciding match. The match was played in driving rain and wind on the excellent Barrow links – some matches were suspended for a period to shelter from the weather. After four matches the score stood at Castlegregory 2, Ballybunion 2. Pat Doody and Mike Tangney had excellent wins while Con O’Connor and Jason Rowan had gone down fighting to top quality opponents. In the final match, Dan O’Connor was three down with five to play but had levelled the match after 18. It was then down the 19th – this was halved so the match went to the 20th where Ballybunion had the extra bit of luck to secure the win. An excellent display from our newcomers against very experienced opponents. Very well done to the team management and all panel members and congratulations to a very sporting Ballybunion team.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-30910135856820552472009-07-08T04:55:00.000-07:002009-07-08T05:00:07.139-07:00Some Images from Lady Captain Sandra's Prize Day

2009 Lady Captain Sandra Nyhan presents her Captain's Prize to the winner, Vice Captain Liz O'Carroll.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-63958770111861458052009-07-08T04:53:00.000-07:002009-07-08T04:55:23.790-07:00

Gorretti O'Connor takes the runner up prize.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-34286774715986989922009-07-08T04:52:00.000-07:002009-07-08T04:53:44.885-07:00

3rd prize goes to Mary Rose Binchy.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-6718543965286565082009-07-08T04:43:00.000-07:002009-07-08T04:51:40.935-07:00

Heather Stephenson takes 4th spot.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-57727971438352265102009-07-08T04:41:00.000-07:002009-07-08T04:43:03.185-07:00

Attentive family members at Sandra's Prize Presentation.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-21048604883224963262009-07-08T04:39:00.000-07:002009-07-08T04:40:45.773-07:00

At last a man appears on the scene. No great plunder here for the Vikings, although a few must have slipped through. Lean pickings also for the Normans who seem to have missed the Republic of Kerry altogether. ‘Castle’ survived for generations on the intransigence and the ‘webbed foot’ mentality of the indigenous population. One way or another a great day got off to a great start at the Castlegregory clubhouse. We all knew the lady captain, so her effusive welcome was expected. Her Vice, her secretary, her predecessor, the lady president and the whole shooting match of female members who welcomed us, defied description. Their attributes encompassed all those normally expected in Pigalle, Trinity College and the Tralee Dome. Wonderful women all. They welcomed us effusively and without reservation, and still, in some unfathomable way, we felt that it was we who owed them a debt of gratitude, as indeed the evening proved.

Males to Tomasins, females to Crutches: Fed and watered: Back to Crutches.

One who has lived a long time and who has experienced all kinds of rannygazoo can only describe what ensued as magical. The welcome, the lead in by the secretary, the homily of the Lady Captain, the acceptance of her vice (who happened to win) the obvious bond between the members, the like bond between the members and their guests, the warm feeling that pervaded the proceedings and the never to be forgotten down to earth attitude that obviously pervades this lovely club, made this writer, for one, envious.

Long may your beautiful course survive.

Long may your approach to golf survive.

Long may your “joy de vivre” survive.

Thank you.

A guest.

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-27526951589614000202009-07-07T01:48:00.001-07:002009-07-07T01:48:47.220-07:00Thank You from the Lady Captain

I am not normally stuck for words but on this occasion words fail me to describe what happened on Saturday last. A big thank you to all the members of both sections of the club who gave me a day and night that I will never, ever forget. For the cards, gifts, text messages, flowers, baking and just general goodwill, I thank you all.... well on Saturday p.m. our trusty troops took on Killorglin who had beaten their local rivals, Dooks in the morning sunshine. As the wind rose strongly over Lough Leane, the Men's club treasurer Sean and his personal health advisor Merlyn led us off with a perfect drive. Next off the t-box, Rebels Kieran and Anna, did likewise. Brian and Sandra, he of hurling repute and she being a neighbour of Thady Quill couln't be outdone and followed suit. The Chairman, accompanied by the newly wed Edel, had no choice but to match that & finally the two Vice Captains, Joe & Liz, took no notice & just hit straight out too.
The quality of golf was high from both teams but Castle always seemed to have the edge and the efforts of the moring match put Killorglin under extra pressure. Edel & Mike led from the start and finished on the 13th. The wily O'Connors were next in, winning 3 & 2. The Lady Captain & the "Hurler(!?!)" were comfortable, then stuttered (we'll be walking to the clubhouse anyway !) so finished on the 17th (2&1). Just ahead, taking inspiration from the Pairc Ui Chaoimh performance, Kieran & Anna, turned a deficit of 3 with 4 holes to go, into a win on the 18th.The Vice Captains were called in off the 17th fairway, 1up & looking good. 4.5 / 0.5
Sunday morning saw us pitted against Ross, who we beat last year in Killorglin. The Ross team is usually single figure young lads and high handicap 'more mature' ladies and this year was no different. Conditions were again warm with a stiff breeze.
First off the blocks were Jason "young JR" and " I'll be fine once I get going" Tina. Their study of the course on Saturday paid dividends and they came home 4 & 3. Edel & Mike went off second and had a ding-dong game, going 3 down, 2 up, 1 down and finally succumbed on the 19th (which ultimately decided the match). The O'Connors, as usual, finished early, 4 & 3. Sandra & Brian met a really 'hot' golfing couple and 'came second' 7& 6. The Shannons were also involved in a really tight battle and were pipped on the 18th. Both matches were played in a real sporting fashion as one would expect. Ross played Ceann Sibeal in the final and again won 3 / 2, that match also decided on the 19th.
Thanks to all those on the panel who gave of their time and effort to play and support. This is arguably the strongest team in the Club and success is not far away. The number of people willing to don the club colours in play and support is ever increasing and this also augers well. Those who did not play turned their task to caddying and the team spirit of Castlegregory was very much in evidence. To cut a long story short, we all played very well and with the first four matches secured we were able to call Joe Mulcahy and Liz O'Carroll in (just before they won on the 17th!). The harmonious husband and wife pairings of the O'Connors and Shannons added much to the team as did the selectors Edel/Mike and the thrown together Brian Neenan and myself (aided, might I say, by the faultless green reading skills of Eddie Hanafin). We were absolutely delighted and elated to win and much hilarity followed in the clubhouse.

Day two dawned and we gathered at day-break (nearly) in Killarney clubhouse for scones and coffee. Ross were to be the opponents and we had heard that they had young, low men and very able 20 ish women. The subs, supporters and caddies also showing their customary loyalty were there in force. Jason Rowan and Tina Moriarty got the call up and were quick to justify their position by taking the first blood. Brian and I (Eddie cannot be faulted in any way here!) fell by the wayside and were hammered by a very able, skillful and somewhat scary duo from Ross. One all. As we dejectedly made the long trip back towards the clubhouse we heard that Merlyn and Sean had come from 3 down to win the match and our hearts began to soar. 2 - 1 Castle. Mike and Edel were all square and the Shannons were up - hope sprang eternal. Liz and Helen were zipping by in a buggy calling encouragement to all and Mike Burrowes, George, Joe, Marian Kennedy and Marie (fresh from Martin and Teresa's daughter's wedding) were white in the face from concentration. It was not to be however as the Shannons, having played fabulous golf, were beaten on the 18th and the Keane/Randles pairing lost on the 19th hole having fought to the bitter end. All in all, it was a very positive experience and an indication of the strength of our club. The atmosphere and goodwill had to be seen to be believed and I think all who were involved learned a little more about the game of golf.

Many thanks to selectors, players, subs, caddies and supporters - you all played your part. On to the next .........

Free upgrade for your Windows Live Messenger! Click here!

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-77240462716936121782009-06-16T04:44:00.001-07:002009-06-16T04:44:28.190-07:00Ladies Team Update - Captain Sandra Writes

If a loss could be considered a triumph this is what last Saturday in Ballybunion turned out to be. Helen Besseling’s ladies minor team were full of grit and determination as they took on a very confident Limerick outfit. The rough on the Cashin course had to be seen to be believed and as a result the entire course clogged up as the early morning matches spent a lot of their time searching for lost balls. Added to this was an hour of driving sleet and hailstones which would have made the hardiest of golfers throw in the towel. The women in blue however made the turn, uncomplaining, all flat, one up, 4 down, 2 up and 1 up respectively. A very friendly group of Limerick supporters egged their team on and Liz O’Carroll and I did our best to do the same. Helen was the first to claim victory on the 14th hole having decided to be sensible and use iron play to avoid the rough altogether. Mary Sills met very tough opposition and although playing very well succumbed to her opponent. One all. Attention now turned to Tina Moriarty who, aided by her sister Ann (a tennis player) was exercising some really impressive shots on a very difficult course. It came down to the 18th hole and could have been anyone’s but Tina just lost out. 2 – 1 Limerick. Next up came Ger O’Brien and husband Pat who were supposed to be attending the wedding of a friend in Killarney. By this stage the hailstones had made sugar of Ger’s fake tan and her hair had that wild wind swept look that would be sure to cause comment at a later stage of the proceedings! Playing golf that would not look out of place in senior competitions, Ger and her opponent lay all flat at the 18th and headed off down the first fairway once again. Word reached us that Marilyn Spillane had triumphed on the 18th so all attention now focused on Ger once again. The pair halved the 19th moved on to the 20th where it came down to one long putt reaching its destination and the other not.

If I had to pick one day this summer that summed up the attitude and determination of Castlegregory golf – this would be it. The girls did not give up for one minute and did their very, very best for their club. Well done to all players, caddies and manager. We lost – but not really!

Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16431971181658185417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398346.post-63073877629518824382009-06-15T07:17:00.001-07:002009-06-15T07:17:18.536-07:00Ladies Advance in Irish Mail Fourball

Congratulations to Mary T Rael and Marian Kennedy who qualified for the last 16 in the Irish Mail Fourball on Sunday11th. The ladies travelled to the Kinsale Golf Club and played on the new Farrangalway Course. They had never played the course before and were taking on the fancied local ladies, however the Castlegregory Ladies were not in the least intimidated and held a 2 hole lead after 9, then followed a tense period where the Cork pairing had stroke advantage and the match was all square on 15. The Castlegregory Ladies showed their class winning the 16 with a par and Mary T Rael EAGLED the 348 yard 17th to send our Castlegregory pair into the next round in fantastic style. Where the next round takes place is not known yet but Mary T and Marian will take the best wishes of Management and all members of Castlegregory Golf and Fishing club with them.
