As I understand it, Well Hall House was in very poor condition, the Nesbit/Blands not being very up on DIY; also not all that well off, compared with the equivalent leading children's authors of today. I think there was a fire in the house at one time. The council bought the house and grounds, creating the park which is now the Pleasaunce, renovating the Tudor Barn and demolishing the semi-derelict Well Hall House. The bell had been placed on the House during its short time as a prep school in the 1880s.
