Hopefully some of you NY folks can make it.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1119247951244156292005-06-19T23:12:00.000-07:002005-06-19T23:12:31.246-07:00sword in stoneI've got an audition Thursday for a show with the 13th street repertory company. Great news. Was recommended for one role by someone in a class but the director is interested in me for another role after hearing my voice. I do that announcer voice thing. I am a natural bass baritone after all.

Tracers audition next Sunday, will have to go see if I can find a copy of the play. My personal library can always use another volume in it.

The writing group off shoot of the Masters class is off to a nice start. I think it's definitely energized us.

Yesterday was the reading of Jon Crefeld's The Sword Politik a well-written interesting play set in early Christian Germany. Nice bits of humor throughout. You're never sure exactly how it's going to end as the main characters arc could easily go almost any way. It was an interesting experience and I'll definitely have to go check it out once it's put up in August. I read a role in the play but I'm not exactly right for any of the roles in it.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1118865242092132212005-06-15T12:54:00.000-07:002005-06-15T12:54:02.136-07:00frustratedYesterday I had an audition with TROMA studios for a new film called Poultrygeist. You may know TROMA from the Toxic Avenger series. Went okay I suppose. I had to sing a song and though it was only my second singing audition I already am starting to feel like an old hand at it.

I've already run into several casting agents as shills trying to sell you their services. It's a part of the business I know. One is affiliated with the guy who ran my acting on film class. The less said about him the better. It was a costly mistake. I sensed it going, in especially after the first class but as I'd committed to him previously I stayed with him and bailed on the film school. Lesson? Trust your instincts even if it means sometimes bailing on a commitment.

8 Minute Madness festival uptown tonight. Sining lessons tomorrow. Tracers audition at the end of the month. I had another audition prospect pop up for Monday but I would have to dance for them... I'm just not quite there yet. Again I should have followed my instincts and found a dance school earlier. I knew this situation would pop-up. Those same instincts are telling me now to find a Stage Combat class. I know I'm going to need it as well.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1118068093579259422005-06-06T07:28:00.000-07:002005-06-06T07:28:13.626-07:00go team, ME!Just got another email about the Tracers audition. The play served as the (supposed) basis for Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors. I've never done Shakespeare let alone plays that inspired him so it was all kind of interesting. I actually think I have a pretty good shot at getting it. I'm also supposed to hear about an audition for a revival of a play called Tracers this next week. We shall see, we shall see.

Finished another revision on the little one-act I'm writing. Waiting on feedback on that and working on two scenes for class. I guess I'm busy but it still feels as though I'm mired in molasses. Time just lopes slowly along and no one is returning my calls this weekend. Shucks.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1117661292668044942005-06-01T14:28:00.000-07:002005-06-01T14:28:12.716-07:00just A FEWActing class went very well yesterday; one scene partner and I put up our scene from A FEW GOOD MEN and another partner and I put up a scene from P.S. YOUR CAT IS DEAD. Both went very well, esp., A Few Good Men. Got a new scene to work on as well. Heavy on the dialogue for me, which is neither good nor bad, just is.

Learned a lot from A FEW GOOD MEN. The scene is short so I thought would be over and done... easy breezy but it wasn't. Many layers to it very interesting. Lesson? Don't judge a piece by its length. *heh, heh*

Writing a scene/play hopefully for the next showcase. Wrote a draft and sent it to my acting coach and now working from his notes. It's already become something I didn't start out with. Which is good. I like the process.

Acting class again tonight. Jon C and I are putting up A FEW GOOD MEN complete with uniforms... well near-uniforms anyway. I did finally watch the Tom Cruise movie version as well as the extras. They really are two different animals, two stories based on the same incident. I think I prefer the stage version but I really enjoyed the movie. I think I like my smilin' Jack Ross over Kevin Bacon's almost weaselly pratt but both serve the storyline.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1117255475092167112005-05-27T21:44:00.000-07:002005-05-27T21:44:35.146-07:00Ain't Misbehavin'The audition Tuesday went well, or at least I felt good about it. Some days that is all you can hope for. Haven't heard back from them and I really don't expect to and that's okay. Really it is. I swear.

Had to pass on another audition, my work schedule would not have worked with their rehearsal schedule at all. I can make some adjustments but I'm not going to quit a paying job for a non-paying acting gig. Jus' don't make sense, eh?

Tuesday's audition was my first singing audition BTW. So, Yay ME! Another milestone. I've gone from never having sung in public to singing for people to auditioning for a musical in little over a month. Not too shabby.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1116715106220120152005-05-21T15:38:00.000-07:002005-05-21T15:38:26.226-07:00oySo the generally mild frustration and malaise I've been feeling with the acting thing has became a more acute in the last week. Specifically I've grown MORE frustrated with the scene from the Tuesday group for a number of reasons, not necessarily least among them being my work... oh well.

The frustration is hardly enough to make me quit. I do realize that how I feel this minute is not necessarily how I will feel forever. Doesn't make this moment any more fun though does it?? In all honesty I think it's all part of the process, you just have to keep trudging through.

Taking in the EX Caminos at The Knitting Factory 74 Leonard Street, between Broadway and Church St. (212-219-3132).. starring the one and only Michael Lengyel.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1116692762279109452005-05-21T09:26:00.000-07:002005-05-21T09:26:02.293-07:00one of THOSE daysTrying to get to the gym I swear... but all I really want to do is curl up with my Playstation2. ARRRRGH! Need a haircut too. It sucks having to take care of business and stuff some days. *grins*

Looks like I have an audition Tuesday, so yay me. Also I need to sit down and read the script for Reason for Waking, haven't done so yet because well it isn't all up yet. Not really up for reading it and trying to decide whether or not to commit to it until I see the whole script. Once I see it all I'll talk to the producer and see what the shooting schedule will be like. My job is a big factor in this... I won't just re-arrange the universe for every thing that comes along. I will definitely have to feel good about it and do some talking to people.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1116435192032890032005-05-18T09:53:00.000-07:002005-05-18T09:53:12.066-07:00Hell IS other people...Frustrated with the acting thing right now. Not necessarily with acting... it's hard to explain in a public forum like this, i.e. I don't want to get too specific at group level. I'm actually happy with my progress, getting enough nibbles to keep my happy, self-absorbed, ass spinning merrily along. I think I'll save the details for my more or less private blog.

later gators...

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1116168910348569472005-05-15T07:55:00.000-07:002005-05-15T11:20:49.026-07:00Action HeroWorking on four different scenes and a new monologue for acting class. There's The Jane Martin piece Connections, P.S. Your Cat is Dead, A Few Good Men and the new scene is from The Tiger. The scene from P.S. Your Cat is Dead is probably the biggest challenge if only because it requires I have a Brooklynese accent. The character is VERY Italian. Bought putty from the costume shop to change the shape of my very Irish nose. Yeah... I'm one of THOSE people.

Thinking of looking for a classical monologue later this month. Finally finished my first mass mailing. It took me a month to get it all out but I sent out at least 250 headshot/resume. We'll see what happens.

The singing class is going well, still working out the throat infection I had two weeks ago though. But overall I'm very happy with it. Working on a new up tempo song for auditions, Come Fly With Me. I went and picked up two of Josh Groban's song books... yeah , yeah I know. Most of his catalogue sounds like it belongs in a musical plus he is a baritone so I should be able to wrangle with his song choices.

Got an email from someone who saw my headshot/resume on NYCasting. Wants me to be in his indie film. It's kind of an action adventure with a lot of psychological drama. We talked for twenty minutes on the phone Friday night. He sent me a link to the script today so I can start reading it. I'll do the film if I can arrange work with the shooting schedule.

Caved in and bought my tickets for Revenge of the Sith Wednesday night... what the hell. It'll be much more fun with the <strike>geek squad</strike> faithful anyway.

I do feel a little bad for RoTS, Batman Begins has already supplanted it on the big marquee on the Toys-R-Us at Times Square.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1115787441507432852005-05-10T21:57:00.000-07:002005-05-10T21:57:21.566-07:00not so bad, bad news!Got a call tonight from the Assistant Director of the movie I was supposed to be an extra in tomorrow, The Picture of Dorian Grey. The shoot has been rewritten, specifically the characters they needed have extras have been written out. Not that I mind, AT ALL. He said they would have my resume/headshot and would call me if they need anything later in the shoot.

Honestly it's a blessing. I'm working on three different scenes for acting class and really need to get some work done. One of the scenes requires a brooklynese dialect and I really need to work on that as well. Also have a new monologue to learn and still need to work on the other two as well... wouldn't mind finding a classical piece either. I could use some singing rehearsal as well. Need to pick up laundry and make groceries and hit the gym as well.

I've already transferred it to DVD so as soon as I can Quicktime it I will post it.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1115486426135097762005-05-07T10:20:00.000-07:002005-05-07T10:20:26.140-07:00Buyer BewareThe call back went well. They have already cast the part with the guy from last year but it looks like I am their stand by should something happen. The casting director/producer gave me a copy of the script. He sent me an email that same night thanking me again and saying that he would like me to come to some rehearsals in the summer so I get to know the show and the cast.

Had a call from a casting agent but it turned out to be a trick. After some asking around I found out that they are NOT a legitimate casting agency but instead invite people in to interview in order to sell them on their own school.

Did get a call from an independent feature that wants me to come in Wednesday to be an extra.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1115486369385037402005-05-02T10:16:00.000-07:002005-05-11T07:56:45.223-07:00Call back!I got a call back from the audition I went on Thursday night. A conditional one, anyway. There's a good chance the guy who played the role last year may reprise it this year but the producer wants to have a strong back-up so has asked me to come in a read with some of the actresses they are considering. There's also a possibility the actor may ONLY be able to do it for the festival in Philly, and the producer would like to take it to other cities.

Hey, it's something.

The also-impressive bit was I was actually able to get the night off from work in order to go! And didn't have to lie or call in sick! Yay me!
ALSO...

I just ran into SMALLVILLE's John Glover on the subway, here in NYC. I hesitated at first not wanting to disturb him but then decided to stop and say hullo. I told him I loved his work in 'Love, Valour, Compassion'. He was VERY gracious and asked if I was an actor, where I was from. We chatted about New Orleans for a minute when I mentioned I had moved from there to NYC. I mentioned knowing Craig of Kryptonsite, who he spoke very highly of, mentioning that C had come to his charity walk.

Very nice man, very gracious, a class act!

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1115486178594120322005-05-01T10:14:00.000-07:002005-05-07T10:16:18.600-07:00That Is The QuestionSorry for the lack of substantive entries of late. Very busy and I'm not really even doing anything yet.

The audition Thursday night went very well. The casting director actually interrupted me before I could finish my monologue. He gave me sides and have me go out and rehearse with one of the young ladies there. He auctioned for him, he gave us a little direction then we did it again. She was dismissed and I went out to work on more sides with two girls. We performed them for him then they switched roles and we did it again.

That was it for me. On the way out he made sure that I had read the particulars on the play and said they would be in touch. Obviously I feel really good about it. It would be part of the Philly Fringe Festival in September..

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1115485217957148222005-04-29T09:59:00.000-07:002005-05-11T07:57:36.473-07:00Where's the salt lick?Feeling much better, after a week in bed with a throat infection of some sort. Went to an audition Saturday for a play, and Monday for a print ad for MetLife. The latter was kind of a cattle call. Very easy. Walk in, they take your picture leave your headshot and then leave. The audition Saturday went very well. They liked the monologue and me so irregardless of how it ends up; It went well.

Went to acting class today. Most of my favorites were there! Very small class today it was way cool. We did some interesting personal exercises.

Got home to a Gmail. Invited to another audition Wednesday night. Moved it to Thursday. Now I have to come up with a two minute monologue. I think the Sweet Bird of Youth is too long and can't be cut easily.

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730405.post-1115486015163216212005-04-28T10:12:00.000-07:002005-05-07T10:13:35.170-07:00Holy Moly!Interesting night at the masters acting class. I had an audition pop up for tomorrow night so I spent all day working on a two minute monologue for it. Put it up in class, got the notes on it. All is good. Will work on it tomorrow before the audition.

At the end of class it was my turn to sing a song. As some of you who actually read this may know I totally bailed on the musical audition last week. I won't say out of fear... let's call it terror. I have actually never sung in front of anyone save my singing coach before. And while they say you sing well, you are also paying them so I tend to take it with a measure of salt. hey, I'm cynical.

Plus I was going to sing a number from the show I was trying out for and was scared I would destroy it and humiliate myself.

I put the same song up tonight at acting class. I figured what the hell. It was at the end of class so of course I had three hours for the terror to build. Did it once, trembling all the time. Then the coach had me do it a second time, focusing more on an imaginary person.

Much to my surprise they loved it. Both times. They did not know that I was terrified nor that I had never sung in public. I am amazed, still processing. My coach said that I have a beautiful voice. Several people were amazed that I do not have a son (the song is a father singing of his son). Everyone genuinely enjoyed it.

I'm all astonishment. This is no small thing for me. One of my biggest fears, stumbling blocks wiped away. I have always been terrified of singing in public, you know that I would suck! LOL Wow.

I told everyone that I had bailed on the audition because of this song, of my fear. My coach did not upbraid me for it but said the next time the audition comes around, don't be afraid to but it up. There were a lot of compliments but I'll let it alone...

the usual suspectsnoreply@blogger.com0
