The color of the Universe

According to NASA's Astronomy Photo of the Day (APOD), this is the average color of the universe:

This is possibly the most amazing thing I've seen/read on the Internet in a long time. I think its really beautiful because the amount of darkness that must compose the universe is so vast I cannot even comprehend it.. yet the average color of the whole is unmistakably light.

More info on how two scientists at John Hopkins (Karl Glazebrook & Ivan Baldr) calculated the color is here.

Hi! Before I'm away from my blog for awhile, I want to make a short post about some cool shows and screenings I will be a part of this month. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to any of them because I'll be away on a trip of my own--but if you are around any of the respective cities, they should be worth stopping by.

First, on the 15th I will be part of a night of screenings at Penthouse Gallery in Baltimore curated by Andrew Laumann. More info and the complete list of artists is TBA but my Usernames video will be screened.

Then on the 16th, I will be part of a huge group collage show at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn. The title of the show is Cutters and it is curated by James Gallagher. The opening is from 7-10pm and the show will run through November 15th.

On the 17th, I am in a show that opens in Chicago at Golden Age curated by Milano Chow. I will have a drawing in a showcase of drawings and prints by the artists of Medium Rare. In addition to the artworks, books and other small editions will also be available for purchase. The show runs until November 17th.

Finally, on the 24th, I am in a group show opening in Tornoto at The Junction entitled Civilization and Its Discontents. I have a few photographs in it but the show will have all sorts of works on paper and some installation and performance, all curated by Conjunction Collective. The opening is set to run from 7pm to midnight and there will be a DJ. The works will be up until November 8th.

P.S. This may be old news, but I just got my copy of the Book of House Plants posters published by Miniature Garden last weekend at the bookfair. They are beautiful and Denise did a really great job!

Glance + NY Art Book Fair + more

New! Glance is a full-color offset tabloid zine / unbound set of posters of my photographs, published by mediabus. They came all the way from Seoul and have a table at the NY Art Book Fair which runs through the weekend here in NYC. I will be around Saturday so come by and say hello if you are around!

Glance was printed in an edition of 200, has an ISBN (my first!) and is available for a total steal at $10. Also available at the fair will be copies of my older zine of drawings, Some Thoughts, as well as my newest tumblr zine, Sensitive. More info on those can be found here.

Random Rules

So really, who was I kidding when I said I would blog less now that I don't have a job? Yea, that's what I thought. Lately I've just been reading and sleeping and watching movies and having the best conversations with friends. Too bad this can't last forever.

I have also been getting even more into tumblr. Above is a quick experiment in diptychs that I've been thinking about ever since I learned about tumblr's random function. If you are not familiar with this--just go to any tumblr and add "/random" and see what happens. It adds a whole new dimension to looking at images from the past..

Mary Amor

This post is dedicated to one of my favorite people: Mary Amor. I received the above friendship bracelet in the mail Friday, along with a swan and a small card in a gold foil box.

Mary and I have known each other since I was 17 and she was 18. We met in Oakland learning how to print color photographs together at CCA. Even though after that summer I returned to Texas and she to Orange County.. life has somehow brought us together multiple times over the years in surprising places. She is living proof to me that the people who really matter in your life never disappear, now matter how time and distance may separate.

Right now she has posted on her blog, I love you always, that she is giving away FREE friendship bracelets to anyone who emails her about it. All she asks is $1 for shipping or a S.A.S.E. Sounds like a pretty great deal to me, but I already have mine! :)

Busy

Hi! This is about as personal as this blog is going to get--but a lot has been going on lately..

First, I've quit my full-time office job and I'm traveling to London and Stockholm in October. I'm leaving right after the NY Art Book Fair, which I will be attending and having a new photo zine coming out published by Mediabus (complete with my first ISBN)! More on that later..

Second, a few weeks ago my camera was stolen from some of my good friends' loft. Its been really hard and on top of that I'm traveling--so I just put up some stuff I've been making recently for sale (cheap).

I've been making these hand drawn tote bags based on knot imagery I was thinking of getting as a tattoo this past summer. I'm too much of a baby, though:

Prints

Today I went to Forest Object Fabrication and hung out with Breanne Trammell. I finally got a look at my IRL print and it was so nice to see them all laid out.

They are so beautiful and delicate--and will be available soon to order from FOF's website! The prints are 8x10" and are being sold sandwiched between plexi and glassine, so they are ready to hang in either a frame or with L-hooks (included).

Forest Object Fabrication print release

Forest Object Fabrication is Breanne Trammell and Peter Segerstrom. They run a print-shop and silkscreen workshop in downtown Brooklyn.

This Saturday, September 19th, they are having an open house and print release party for a new print of mine (based on this .gif). I feel pretty honored, because it is actually the first of their IRL (In Real Life) Guest Artist Publication Series! I'm going over to the shop later this week before the opening to sign all of the prints, so I'll post some photos soon.

On Saturday, doors open at 8pm. I will be there as well as the prints and a special music performance by Object Group. Come say hello if you are around!

Involved, Socially webcam tour

For the last two weekends I've been connected live to Triple Base in San Francisco doing improvised one-hour versions of FREE ADVICE with whoever would enter the gallery. The first Saturday was super busy and (of course) my computer couldn't handle it so I have little documentation. Last Saturday, however, was a bit slower so Joyce of Triple Base gave me a tour of the gallery and show:

Thank you to everyone at Triple Base for hosting the first live-webcam installment of FREE ADVICE yesterday. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first since I've never done that kind of performance--but it was a lot of fun because you all are amazing.

Sadly, my computer had some technical problems and I only got a few screenshots.. I'm looking forward to next week, though and I'll try to record some video then to post later!

Open Windows, Open Doors

Finally! The zine I made earlier this year is now available through Medium Rare.

I was going to try to explain what it is but I think Milano came up with the best description ever on the site: "A collection of photos, collages, and texts on coping with artist's block, among other life hurdles." Amen.

The zine itself is a sturdy 72 pages, 4.75 x 7.75", perfect bound b&w on stark white paper. They were made in an edition of 100 and hand-numbered. They are for sale here for $14.

Due to some technical difficulties the live webcam FREE ADVICE sessions are rescheduled to the next two Saturdays: August 22 and August 30, 2009 between 1-2pm PST.

FREE ADVICE (extended)

In conjunction with the show Involved, Socially at Triple Base (opening tomorrow!) I am going to extend the FREE ADVICE column. Instead of doing it via email, it will take the form of two live webcam sessions on two consecutive Saturdays starting a week from now. A computer will be set-up in the San Francisco gallery and I will be remotely connected on the following dates and times:

Saturday, August 15, 12-1pm PST
Saturday, August 22, 12-1pm PST

The same rules apply: I will try to answer any question regarding cats, love, or art. If I can't answer them myself I will consult Google for you!

I Don't Believe in Miracles / Everything is Possible

I'm in two group photography shows opening soon--both of which should be pretty good. I'm psyched.

The first is called "I Don't Believe in Miracles" curated by Alana Celii at SpaceWomb in Long Island City, Queens (right across from PS1).

The show will run for two weeks (August 14-31) and features work by Alexander Binder, Charlotte Bonjour, Amy Giese, Nicholas Gottlund, Jessica Hans, Jessica Williams, and Grant Willing.

The opening is August 14 from 6-8pm and I'll be there!

The second show is in Los Angeles at Space 15 Twenty. It's a group polaroid show called "Everything Is Possible" and is sponsored by Urban Outfitters and The Impossible Project. It runs from August 21-September 13 with a catalog available August 21st.

"Usernames" is a new video project (above, more info) I made that will be debuted in a new group show at Triple Base Gallery in San Francisco that opens August 7.

The show is called "Involved, Socially" and is curated by Michelle Blade. More info on the show can be found here. Also for the show, I will be doing a live improvised video chat version of FREE ADVICE during the opening as well as some other dates to be announced.
