S.N.I.P. Clinic Meets Goal of 6,000
Spay/Neuter Surgeries in First Year!

January 16, 2008 (Louisville, Ky.) The statistics are staggering -- for every human born, six kittens and puppies are born. The Kentucky Humane Society's (KHS) S.N.I.P. Clinic is striving to reduce that number and address the pet overpopulation crisis in our region. By January 31, the low-cost, public spay/neuter clinic will complete its 6,000th surgery during its first year of operation.

KHS opened the S.N.I.P. Clinic, the area's first full-time spay/neuter clinic, in February 2007, following analysis of local and national statistics that suggest adoptions alone cannot solve the overpopulation problem. Yet, the benefits of spaying and neutering a companion animal extend further than helping reduce the number of unwanted pets in our area. An altered pet leads a longer and healthier life, with fewer risks for contracting certain diseases and cancer.

In an effort to increase awareness of pet overpopulation in the community, the S.N.I.P. Clinic launched a controversial advertising campaign with a focus on encouraging individuals to spay or neuter their pet. Now, one year later, the S.N.I.P. Clinic has achieved its goal of performing 6,000 surgeries on owned canines and felines. That, coupled with over 5,400 adoptable pets who were altered in 2007, means KHS spayed and neutered more than 11,000 pets last year alone.

"We want to put an end to euthanizing adoptable pets in our area, so they each can find a permanent home," said Lori Kane Redmon, KHS President. "A high-volume spay/neuter program is the only way to accomplish that and prevent animals from suffering in the future."

KHS and the S.N.I.P. Clinic will continue its aggressive spay/neuter initiative by increasing its number of surgeries by 33%, with the goal of altering 8,000 owned pets in 2008. For more information on the S.N.I.P. Clinic, call (502) 636-FIX1 or visit www.kyhumane.org.

BEAT THE HEAT
In honor of its one-year anniversary, the S.N.I.P. Clinic is hosting a month-long special to "beat the heat" before kitten season begins this spring. During the month of February, pet owners can have their female cat spayed for only $20. Clinic appointments are required in advance and can be made by calling the S.N.I.P. Clinic at (502) 636-FIX1 [3491]. Surgery prices typically range from $35 to $65. Low-cost vaccinations are also available at the time of surgery.

The most critical issue facing pets in Louisville and surrounding counties today is finding enough permanent, loving homes for them all.
