His writing is focused on stark imagery, an ever increasing diction that strives to find the balance of layman's entertainment and the expression of a globalized metaphysical framework. Known for thoughtful, humorous writing, Hampton has read and performed his poetry locally at a number of venues, including Magdalena's Tea House in Lansing.

Born to a Mexican-American mother and Nigerian father, from birth poet Tiya Kunaiyi was in a world made of worlds. Raised in Rivers State, Nigeria, Kunaiyi spent her childhood exposed to the largely diverse culture that existed in the oil-rich state. It is that unique state of cultural complexity that has shaped the voice of her work. Alumna of Michigan State University’s Black Poets Society and a long time member of the NuPoet Collective, Kunaiyi has helped to organize and perform at a number of regional events and festivals.

(SCENE) Metrospace is East Lansing’s City-funded contemporary art gallery and performance space. Both sprout from the land itself. Our community’s need for healthy food and local music has never been more apparent in this current economic downturn. Please come celebrate our local culture and stimulate our local economy at SCENE Metrospace in East Lansing and think spring thoughts on your way here.

Artist Bios

Joe Reilly has been a singer, songwriter, and guitarist for over twelve years and has had extensive performance and touring experience, bringing messages of hope and peace in his songs to audiences in the Midwest and across the United States.

Both of his parents are singers and guitarists and Joe grew up listening to their classical and liturgical music in his home and church, learning that music can be prayerful, healing, and celebratory. With their help he began to teach himself to play guitar and sing. In addition to self-instruction he has also studied voice and guitar privately and at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

Joe is Italian, Irish, and Native American (Cherokee). His background in the study and performance of many different musical styles, including Native American music, folk, blues, jazz, liturgical, and classical, as well as his academic studies of environmental justice and racism and spiritual roots in Catholicism and Native American religions has led to a writing style that incorporates these diverse influences into a unique and powerful voice.

After more than two years of writing songs with and for children, singer songwriter Joe Reilly is ready to release a full-length album of environmental songs for kids of all ages. Titled Children of the Earth, the album includes a chorus of kids’ voices singing with Joe and his guitar on several of the twenty-three fun and educational tunes. The songs teach environmental science and ecological stewardship while entertaining kids and adults alike.

Rachael Davis has been singing on-stage since she was two years old. Being born to parents who never intended to keep her very far from music for very long seems to have made all the difference in the world. Before she was mobile, Rachael would be set in a car seat and placed in the middle of a song circle, and with silver bells on her ankles she would shake her feet to the rhythm. At one-and-a-half Rachael was singing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" to anyone who asked, and at two she started performing with her parents on stage.

In the span of her 6 year solo career Rachael has shared the stage with Boston based singer/songwriter Vance Gilbert, folk divas Claudia Schmidt and Sally Rogers, Prairie Home Companion regulars Robin and Linda Williams, Greg Brown, Taj Mahal, Robert Earl Keen, Fred Eaglesmith, Josh Ritter, jazz legends Marcus Belgrave and Winston Walls -- amongst others. She has opened for Dar Williams, David Lindley, Dr. Ralph Stanley, Little Feat, Garnet Rogers, Chris Smither, Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer, Richard Shindell, Susan Werner, Peter Mulvey, Eddie From Ohio, , Clive Gregson, Willy Porter and many more.

In September of 2001, Rachael moved from Michigan to Boston and within the span of seven months was awarded a Boston Music Award for Best New Singer-Songwriter. In 2002, Rachael contributed "Lonely When You're Gone" to the Respond II compilation (which can be found at http://respondproject.org), which also includes such luminaries as Joan Baez, Dolly Parton, Ani DiFranco and the Indigo Girls (amongst many others). And in 2003 Rachael took home the grand prize in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s Troubadour Contest.

Film Bio’s

The Greenhorns is a documentary film that explores the lives of America’s young farming community—its spirit, practices, and needs. As the nation experiences a groundswell of interest in sustainable lifestyles, we see the promising beginnings of an agricultural revival. Young farmers’ efforts feed us safe food, conserve valuable land, and reconstitute communities split apart by strip malls. It is the filmmaker’s hope that by broadcasting the stories and voices of these young farmers, we can build the case for those considering a career in agriculture—to embolden them, to entice them, and to recruit them into farming.

Our mission, as small grass-roots nonprofit based in the Hudson Valley of New York, is to support, promote and recruit young farmers in America.

www.thegreenhorns.net for more info

Homegrown: Earth, Work, Music is a twelve minute video documentary about a new generation of farmers and musicians working together to build vibrant communities and economies in Michigan. The film highlights Michigan State University's Student Organic Farm as a training ground for progressive young farmers, and the collective

Earthwork Music which combines the talents of many of Michigan's most exciting folk musicians, artists and activists to promote Michigan culture and sustainable livelihoods through concerts, festivals, fundraisers and original music throughout the state. Profiled in the film are MSU's Organic Farming Certificate Program Coordinator Corie Pierce and her partner folk musician Chris Dorman, along with the musical duo Seth Bernard and Daisy May, co-founders of the Earthwork Music collective. The boxes served as the boundaries for the “Think Inside the Box” project, but did not limit students in the amount or types of materials that they were able to use to create their unique works of art.

Although the trend in creativity and education today is to "think outside the box," little attention is being paid to the benefits of "thinking inside the box." Thinking outside the box can be so open-ended that it is limiting to the creative process. Artists, in an attempt to let their minds wander, fail to fence in their thoughts long enough to follow a project through to the end product. They may generate more ideas, but the ideas are so disconnected that they have difficulty putting those ideas into a final work of art.

(SCENE) Metrospace is East Lansing’s City-funded contemporary art gallery and performance space. It is located at 110 Charles St. in the colorful Division Street parking structure, next door to Georgio’s Pizza. Other honorees to be recognized within the category include Macy’s of Minneapolis and Oakwood Healthcare System of Dearborn. The recipient in this award category will be announced and honored at the 23rd Annual Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture (The Guvvys), November 13, 2008 at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The award is traditionally presented each year to a Michigan business or business-related organization that has dedicated extraordinary support to artists, arts and cultural organizations, or arts educators in Michigan.

In total, 22 artists, arts and cultural organizations, arts educators and civic and business leaders from across the state of Michigan will be named as Guvvy honorees for their dedication to arts and culture, within 10 different categories, including: Arts Advocate; Civic Leader; Non Profit Arts and Cultural Leader; Arts and Cultural Organization (under and over $1 million); Exemplary Business; Michigan Artist Lifetime Achievement; Michigan Innovative Artist; Arts Education Organization; and Arts Educator. Also being honored, the 2008 International Achievement Award recipients: director/producer/writer/lyricist Jack O’Brien and musician Bob James.

“Michigan is home to a wealth of creative talents, and we are proud to honor these organizations and individuals,” said Jennifer Goulet, President of ArtServe Michigan. “All of our 2008 award recipients and honorees have helped to cultivate the creative potential of Michigan, its people and communities and express the vision of The Guvvys, rewarding exceptional artistic talent, creativity and innovation.”

CiesaDesign

As a staple to the mid-Michigan arts community for more than 20 years, CiesaDesign has worked with area organizations to share their knowledge in branding, design, production and visual arts services. Logging both paid and pro-bono hours, the staff also is committed to providing in-kind services and connecting nonprofit clients with low cost suppliers or partner donors. Their dedication has shown through notable design works with area festivals, including the East Lansing Art Festival, and significant assistance in initiating (SCENE) Metrospace in East Lansing.

“The firm’s corporate culture believes in giving back to the community and supporting the arts. They recognize that the arts add substantially to our area’s economic development, attraction and retention of young people, and vitality and creativity of community life,” said nominator Bonney Mayers, former director of the East Lansing Art Festival and former outreach coordinator of Kresge Art Museum.

Other honorees in the Exemplary Business category include Macy’s and Oakwood Healthcare System. Macy’s recently partnered with Detroit regional public libraries— through the Library of Michigan Foundation— and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan to introduce the Macy’s Museum Adventure Pass (MAP) designed to promote libraries and to provide free access to arts and cultural organizations and institutions. Oakwood Healthcare System helped promote the arts and supported the artistic aspirations of its community through its Arts for the Spirit initiative, a multi-dimensional program that acknowledges the profound impact of the arts in both healing and community.

In its 23rd year, the Governor’s Awards evolved from the Concerned Citizens for the Arts in Michigan’s Governors’ Arts Awards. Concerned Citizens for the Arts in Michigan was a non-profit, statewide citizens cultural advocacy organization, which later merged with three other art organizations, Arts Foundation, Business Volunteers for the Arts and Michigan Alliance for Arts Education, to form ArtServe Michigan in 1997. In 2006, ArtServe Michigan merged with the Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies to become the new ArtServe Michigan. More than 700 artists, legislators, business leaders, arts managers, board members and patrons from across the state attend the Guvvys each year.

The two-day celebration also includes the Student Event on November 14, 2008 where middle and high school students explore creative career options through a talk-back session with the International Award recipients and hands-on workshops.

About The Governor's Awards for Arts & Culture
Established in 1985 by Concerned Citizens for the Arts of Michigan, The Governor’s Awards for Arts & Culture is the longest running Michigan event recognizing statewide and international leaders in the arts and is Michigan's largest statewide celebration of arts, culture and creativity. Today, the Governor’s Awards is a two-day event celebrating and cultivating creativity in Michigan with an annual gala designed to honor distinguished achievement and meritorious work in arts and culture by individual artists, cultural and educational organizations, arts educators, businesses and individuals, and a Student Event designed to inspire young creative minds to explore creative career possibilities. This year's gala will take place on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at the Detroit Institute of Arts, 5200 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Mich.
