Fellow scouters and friends,

Some of you may have heard, others not. The trailer that belongs to Cub Scout Pack 392 was stolen from the Westminster Church parking lot. The lock was cut off and the trailer hauled off on Wednesday, 6 August between 4:00 and 5:00 am. The trailer contained most all of the Pack’s camping equipment.

The trailer is a 2000 Aven, 5 X 8, black with chrome trim. The VIN # is 4T6FB0810YM013374 and the license plate # is BL13643.

The Cub Scouts in Pack 392 have worked for several years to raise money for the trailer and the equipment. Please keep your eyes open as you go about your daily routine. If you have any information about the thieves or the trailer, please contact the Cubmaster, David Jones, at 252-523-2710, the church office, or the Kinston Police Dept.

First off, thank you all who attended the funeral service for Tommy Hatthaway. It was very nice, in my eyes at least, to see the scouts show their support, attending in their uniforms. I know that the family appreciated it.

Cub Scout Day at Camp Charles
December 1, 2007

This day will provide Cub Scouts the opportunity to shoot BB guns, bows, and do some crafts. The even is open to all registered Cub Scouts and Scouters. Tigers, Wolves, Bears, and Webelos are welcome.

The event will take place on Saturday, December 1st at Camp Charles Scout Reservation in Bailey, NC. Check in begins at 8:00 am from 9:00 am on Saturday. The event concludes at 5:00 pm.

The cost is $15.00 and includes lunch and patch. The even must have 30 Cub Scouts registered by November 23rd for the event to take place. One adult is free for every 8 Cub Scouts who participate; all other adults are $10.00.

Caswell District Annual Awards Banquet

The annual Awards and Recognition Banquet's purpose is to recognize and thank all the adult leaders in Caswell District who make scouting happen. All boys who have achieved the rank of Eagle and/or earned their God and Country Awards will are also recognized.

This year, the Banquet will be take place on Monday, November 5, 2007. Doors open at 6:30 PM; the program begins at 7:00 PM.
It will be held at King's Restaurant in Kinston, NC.

Any adult leader in Caswell District or supporters of Scouting attend the banquet. Boys and their families who have received their Eagle rank and/or God and Country award since October 2006 also attend.

The cost is $12.00 in advance- Price includes meal.
$20.00 after November 1st until November 4th.

Information Regarding the Cub Scout Product Recall by BSA Supplier
East Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America

A routine test of Boy Scouts of America products has shown that one component of the Cub Scout Immediate Recognition Kit, No. 01804, contains unacceptable amounts of lead.

The kit contains a decoration that is worn on a boy's uniform shirt, not typically placed in the mouth, ingested, or in contact with the skin. No illness or injury related to the product use has been reported to the BSA or the supplier, Kahoot Products, Inc.

The BSA has directed its Scout shops and retailers to remove the product from their shelves and immediately return it to National Supply.

Unit leaders should remove the product from the possession of Scouts and keep them until they are notified of the next steps. At this time, the totems should not be returned to the East Carolina Council; as soon as we know what the process is to replace the totem, we will inform leaders and parents.

The supplier, Kahoot, has called for a voluntary consumer recall of all kits and has urged those who have purchased the item, since the year 2000, to remove the recognition totem from their child's possession until the details of the recall have been worked out with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The BSA is posting this recall notice on its Web sites and will place consumer alerts in its member magazines.

The Boy Scouts of America's highest priority is the safety of its youth members and their families. We apologize for any concern this matter has caused and will continue to do everything possible to help ensure the health and safety of all those who participate in our programs.

Q1. How many of the recalled products have been purchased? How long have they been manufactured?

A1. The test sample was conducted on the most recent shipment. We do not know if previous lots had a similar problem, so the recall notice encompasses all kits, whenever purchased. The BSA has received no report of illness or injury regarding this item. This was the first product to show any problem, and similar tests of other products also have shown no such problems. The BSA and Kahoot Products are researching whether that one item, the entire lot, or the total manufacture of the kit was affected. We will respond appropriately depending on the distribution level of items that will be subject to recall. Some 20,000 kits containing 10 decorations per kit have been sold annually for the last seven years.

Q2. How was this problem discovered?

A2. This test was part of a routine inspection of a large group of BSA products and apparel.

Q3. How often are BSA products tested?

A3. We recently began requiring all BSA products to be tested for compliance with lead paint regulations. This product is the first of 94 items tested to show excessive lead content. Consumer safety concerns, not any report of illness or injury, prompted our testing initiative.

Q4. Is it true that lead was in the paint?

A4. Yes. Lead was detected in yellow and blue paint used in the manufacture.

Q5. What will be the process for replacing the kits?

A5. Further instructions will be provided when the recall is announced. For now, parents should ensure that the totems are removed from their children's possession. At this time, our efforts are concentrating on the safety of Scouts and their families.

Q6. How many BSA products have been tested?

A6. All other products sourced directly to the BSA from offshore have been tested and have passed inspection. Our domestic suppliers are responsible for testing the products they have sourced.

Q7. Will there be more recalls?

A7. We can promise only that we will remain vigilant in maintaining product quality and safety. Again, we are not aware of any illness or injury resulting from the use of this product.

Cub Scout Immediate Recognition Kit, Item 01804

Here is the letter from Chuck Kelderhouse, President of Kahoot Products, Inc., regarding the Cub Scout Immediate Recognition Kit. Sorry I'm a little late posting this.

Dear Sirs:
We have been advised that product safety testing for the Cub Scout Immediate Recognition Kit, Item 01804, that we supply to the Boy Scouts of America may contain lead levels in excess of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission standards in the paint on one component of the kit, the totem badge. In light of this development, we have decided to initiate a voluntary recall without delay.

Pending formalization of the details of the recall, we urge all consumers to remove the Cub Scout Recognition totem badge from the children's possession and be kept in a safe place where only adults will have access to them. Detailed instructions for returning the product for replacement will be provided when the recall is announced.

We have received no reports on any injuries resulting from us of the kits. Nevertheless, we urge that this action be taken as a precautionary measure, and as a reflection of our commitment- shared by Boy Scouts of America- to sell only products of the highest quality.

Hey all,
Once again, you all (Caswell District) helped make this year's advance-o-ree a great success. Without your help and participation the event could not have gone as smoothly as possible. A total of 13 troops was represented with around 129-130 boys and around 40 or more adult leaders and parents in attendance. We are in the process of making individual troop rosters with the actual classes attended, completed, and any unfinished requirements noted on these rosters. I will get them completed as quickly as possible and try to have them available through myself or LaMarr. Any classes that were not completed, if the requirements are not noted on these rosters, the scouts should have (somewhere in their vast array of scout stuff) how, when , and where to meet with the merit badge counselor or scout master to complete these badges.
Again, thanks for all you do for scouting. Please remember the District Banquet and submit nominations for those scouters that go above and beyond the " hour per week " to make scouting scouting. -Tom Cavenaugh

COPE/Climbing Instructor Weekend

November 9-11, 2007

What is it? This weekend will provide Scouts or Scouters the opportunity to earn COPE and

Climbing Instructor certification. All scouts must be 16 years old to participate. Open to all Venture Crews (female also).

When? Check-in is Friday from 6-7 and the even concludes Sunday at 12:00 noon.

Where? Herbert C. Bonner Scout Reservation, Blount’s Creek near Chocowinity, NC.

Cost? The weekend cost $45.00 and includes meals. The event must have 6 Scouts or Scouters registered by October 26^th for the event to take place.

Housing? Participants will be sleeping in the staff cabins.

October 5, 6, & 7 2007

Lenoir Community College

This weekend will provide Scouts the opportunity to earn a variety of Merit Badges including: Aviation, Electricity, Electronics, Environmental Science, Family Life, Fingerprinting, Forestry, Horsemanship, Orienteering, Personal Management, Space Exploration, and possibly Traffic Safety. Some badges may be partials.

The Advance-O-Ree will take place at Lenoir Community College, on Hwy. 70 West, Kinston, NC, on Friday, October 5^th through Sunday, October 7^th. Check in begins at 4:00 PM Friday with activities concluding Sunday at 12:00 Noon. The cost will be $8.00 per participant which will include an event patch and a troop/patrol ribbon. A cost of $6.00 for those Scouts taking Electronics will be required.

Troops will register on a first come, first serve basis. If a Merit Badge class fills up Friday night by the 8:00 PM leaders’ meeting, the Scouts should seek an alternative class to take. Please use the attached registration form for alternate classes.

Troops are to provide their own tents and cooking/food preparation equipment while maintaining a “LEAVE NO TRACE” camp site. Campfires permitted in “fire barrels” only! Each Troop should prepare a skit for the Saturday night campfire.

Magazine Derby

Unit Leaders,
The Magazine Derby is a simple and easy fundraiser for your unit! It is risk free, provides a great prize program and your unit will earn 35% commission on sales.

The sale offers many popular magazines, including Sports Illustrated, Time, People, Southern Living, and Field & Stream- all at huge savings off the coverstand price.

There are two price options: $10 and $20 to make the sale easy and simple for your Scouts.
Once Scouts have made a sale, they pick up their vouchers on November 16 or 17 and return them to the customer who then fills it out and sends it in--it's simple and easy!

The timeline follows the same timeline as the popcorn sale, making it easy and simple for your unit. You can even participate in both the popcorn sale and the magazine sale--customers can choose magazines, popcorn, or both!

Pre-Camporee

March 30 – April 1, 2007
Kinston Battlefield Park at Rivermont

Registration will be Friday afternoon from 4:00 to 9:00. The cost will be $8.00 per scout and each scout will receive an event patch. Please copy the registration forms from the Camporee booklet and submit them when you arrive Friday afternoon. We will follow the Camporee booklet score cards including the Saturday campsite inspection, and the uniform inspection on Friday evening.

You may pre-register at the Scout Office, but there will not be a discount for early registration, only points on the score card.

Pre-Camporee events to be held Saturday include the knot tying relay, compass event, fire building event, and first aid event. Bring your own ropes, compasses, and triangular bandages. All materials will be provided for the fire building event except hatchets and knives.

We will have Measely road barricaded starting Friday afternoon. Please enter the camping area from Highway 258 at Fred Moody’s garage. You will be asked to set up camp on the right hand side of Measley road. We will be leaving the area on the left of Measley road for the event field.

Port-a-Johns will be provided. We ask that you and your scouts use the ones provided near the camping area, and leave the one at headquarters for the staff and judges use.

Saturday evening there will be a campfire for everyone so practice your skits.

We would like to invite all of the Webelos in Caswell District to come and campout with the Neusiok Chapter of the Order of the Arrow and join in a day full of Boy Scout fun. This will be a hands-on event where the Webelos participate in the events and not just watch.

Events for the day include a cooking demo, and a chariot race…Boy Scout style. There will also be stretcher race, first aid / bandage tying, & knot tying. Boys will participate in knife and axe handling classes, and participate in leadership games such as the Blind Puzzle and Blind Rope Course. All of these events are mirrored after Camporee events and OA Quest events as well as basic Boy Scout skills. This will give the Webelos an introduction to the fun things they will do in Boy Scouts. That evening there will be a campfire for everyone so practice your skits. If any unit would like a crossover ceremony for the Webelos during the campfire, please let us know ASAP. The OA will provide a ceremony complete with Indians in full regalia.

Registration will be Saturday morning from 7:00 to 9:00. The cost will be $8.00 per scout and each scout will receive an event patch. Scout challenges begin at 10:00. Lunch break will be 12:00 until 1:30, then events continue until 5:00. Each Cub Pack will be responsible for their meals and camping supplies. A trading post will be open during the day with drinks & snacks. If a pack would like to camp Friday night they may but there will be no scheduled events.

This will be a very good opportunity for Webelos to experience a part of Boy Scouting and hopefully inspire them to continue on. This event is being planned and conducted by the youth members of Caswell District’s Neusiok Chapter of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s honor society.

About the District Executive:

LaMarr M. Walker

LaMarr is a native of Kinston, North Carolina and attended East Carolina University majoring in Fine Art. She worked as an outside sales rep. in the cellular phone industry which was emerging in eastern NC. During her tenure, she was recognized for her outstanding customer service, utilized as a trainer for her knowledge of product, sales and service and received multiple sales awards.

In 1998, she received her NC Real Estate License and became a partner in a real estate company in Raleigh. She managed the sales and marketing for general brokerage, servicing the Raleigh and Durham areas. She trained and managed agents in a “team” atmosphere and was a million dollar producer.

In 2001, LaMarr went to work as the Sales Manager for a 48 seat telemarketing company in Goldsboro. Under her leadership, the company more than doubled its employment and experienced tremendous sales growth. Later she served as a management consultant and trainer when the firm opened another office.

She is a long standing member of Gordon St. Christian Church and serves as their Youth Director. She also sits on the church board, sings in the Sanctuary Choir and serves as a deacon.
LaMarr has been married to her husband Adger for 17 years and has two very active children; a son, Hiott, 13 and member of Troop 392 and daughter Charley who is 6 and a Girl Scout. She enjoys playing handbells, swimming, all forms of art, spending time on her family’s farm, watching movies and playing with her children.
