Funny Surveillance System - but Setup's a Pain

The USB 2.0 DVR four-channel Guardian Monitoring and Surveillance System lets you view and record cameras on your desktop or notebook computer from almost anywhere in the world. It is ideal for home or office , and can be a good alternative to more expensive commercial VCR systems -- but only if you have the computer system that runs the software.

The Guardian USB device, one of Swann's newest products, does not run on Windows Vista. Considering that TechNewsWorld waited several months for a test unit after one delay befell another, the lack of Windows Vista support is a big disappointment. Both the package markings and the Swann Web site clearly state that the product only runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

I had expected the included installation DVD to include updated drivers. It didn't. I also felt sure that I could find updated Vista drivers on the manufacturer's Web site or elsewhere online. I couldn't. In fact, the troubleshooting pages on the Swann Web site had no information about the product or the availability of Vista drivers.

In recent years, the IP PBX market has been booming. The advantages of an IP phone system are so obvious that the number of companies equipping themselves with IP PBXs is stupendous. Is T-Mobile's $10 Home-Phone Service Right for You?

It sounds like the deal of the decade: T-Mobile USA Inc.'s @Home service offers unlimited North American calling for $10 per month. After a two-city trial, the service is now available nationwide for T-Mobile users with "qualifying" subscriptions. But there are a lot of factors to consider before you sign up. However great it sounds, the service may not be the bargain it appears to be.
To use the service, you must buy a special home router, which costs $49.99 with a two-year service agreement. You'll also have to have a mobile subscription of at least $39.99 per month for a single line or $49.99 per month for a family plan. You plug the router into your broadband Internet connection, then plug a landline phone into the router. You can port your existing home-phone number to the new service if you wish to do so.

Of course, you'll still be paying for your broadband connection. If you're currently getting that as part of a bundle that includes home-phone service, the price will go up. Some providers offer home broadband for $33 per month with phone service, but if you drop the latter, the cost for the former could rise to $45 or more per month.
