A south-side neighborhood was evacuated for several hours Saturday because police mistakenly believed a suicidal man was inside his home.
Tucson police spent about five hours trying to persuade the man to leave the home, in the 3700 block of East Sun View Court, only to discover he was not inside, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

When I saw the results of Tuesday's school elections, I do not think I was alone in my surprise at the outcomes in a number of districts, especially those that traditionally have been successful in passing such budget initiatives.

When my son was a student at TUSD last year, there was "the food police", who were constantly telling parents that they couldn't send "unhealthy" food in their child's lunches and policing what was in kid's lunch bags and backpacks. Yet the school itself was serving white bread and other food that's not healthy.

Additionally, when my son was finished eating lunch (the lunch he brought from HOME), he wasn't allowed to simply get up and leave. He had to RAISE HIS HAND, and wait for the "monitor" to come and inspect his remains to determine if he'd eaten enough. If they felt he hadn't, he had to stay until he'd eaten enough to satisfy the monitor. These rules weren't specific to him--they were in effect for every child at his school.

To me, these are two glaring examples of waste in a TUSD school. They pay someone to make sure kids have eaten enough of their lunches? They pay someone to make sure my child doesn't have a cookie or a pudding cup stashed in the bottom of his lunch bag or backpack? And Fagen says the budget is cut to the bone? That's a joke!!

I am not looking for sex or female companionship. Those I can get. There is however one thing missing in my life of late. Ever since breaking up with my long distance girlfriend, the amount of unsolicited baked goods arriving in my mailbox has dropped precipitously. Given my relative lack of baking skills and my propensity to avoid paying for food, I figured the most rational solution was to find another long distance girlfriend who enjoys surprising her man with frequent care packages (chocolate chip cookies and rice krispies treats are by far the best).

The exchange is simple. You provide regular care package service and in return I provide emotional support, validation and the occasional, "You're right! They *are* just jealous!" I'll be the boyfriend that Disney's soulless corporate machine has convinced you you want. Your parents will be happy you finally found someone, your friends and coworkers will be jealous that you have a guy who doesn't routinely try to slip it in the "oops hole," and your stalkers (should you have any) will shake their fists in impotent rage. As long as you're not hung up on tangibility, it's a relationship with everything you could want or need.

Fatties, uggos and the horribly disfigured are encouraged to apply! I don't care what you look like because I'll never see what you look like. Tell me you're the most beautiful woman in the world if it makes you feel better, just don't send pictures.

Exclusivity is not part of the deal. I intend to date other women during our association and it would be hypocritical of me to deny you the same freedom. Go out clubbing every Saturday night and sleep with a different guy each time if you like, just remember to get the cookies in the mail by 5:00 because the post office isn't open on Sundays. I have no allergies, so feel free to extend your experimentation to recipes and ingredients as well.

Amid freeze, 4 execs with county get raises

In a year when most county employees will again see no raises and services are being cut, four department heads got increases of more than $6,000 each last month, for a total of nearly $25,000.
Other county employees haven't seen salary increases for years, and officials say they aren't likely to see them in the near future.
The four administrative support department heads who each received an extra $3 an hour are taking on more work as a countywide administrative reorganization continues, County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry said.

Fighting the speed camera's with humor

PHOENIX — Speed-camera photos of the man in the monkey and giraffe masks have generated lots of chuckles. But the cops aren't laughing.
Dave VonTesmar, 47, started getting the $181.50 tickets last year, but it took Department of Public Safety officials several months to realize the same driver was repeatedly triggering speed cameras and refusing to pay the fines. By the time they did, more than 50 of the tickets had become invalid because the deadline for prosecution had passed.
VonTesmar, who has now amassed $6,700 in fines, is fighting each citation by claiming he wasn't behind the wheel.

Ex-City Mgr. Hein suspected of DUI

Former City Manager Mike Hein was arrested early Saturday in Oro Valley on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
An Oro Valley DUI task force officer stopped Hein just after midnight near West Hardy Road and North Northern Avenue for a traffic violation, said Liz Wright, an Oro Valley Police Department spokeswoman.
The officer saw signs of DUI and conducted a blood test, Wright said. Hein was taken into custody but later released, she said. He could not be reached for comment Saturday.

A new study ranks Tucson among the 10 most expensive cities in the United States in which to do business.

The 15th annual Kosmont-Rose Institute Cost of Doing Business Survey released July 20 puts Tucson and Phoenix in an alphabetical list that also includes Akron, Ohio; Chicago; Jersey City, N.J.; Los Angeles; New York; Newark; Philadelphia; and San Francisco.

The survey, done by Claremont McKenna College, Claremont, Calif., ranked 411 cities in terms of their relative cost to do business. Categories include taxes, fees, economic incentives, transportation amenities, the existence of special enterprise zones, and public-private partnerships. Survey officials said two of the biggest determinants of a city’s cost of doing business tended to be business license fees and property taxes.

SWAT officers kill man after 7-hour standoff

A 62-year-old man was fatally shot by police Tuesday night during a standoff at a midtown home that lasted for more than seven hours.
One officer suffered minor injuries during the incident, which occurred in the 2900 block of East Third Street, near East Speedway and North Country Club Road, said Sgt. Diana Lopez, a Tucson police spokeswoman.
SWAT officers shot the man when he came out of the house and refused to put down his firearm, Lopez said.
The incident began when officers went to the home after receiving a request to check on the man's well-being.

So the cops went to go check on the old guys well being cuz he was making suicidal comments. They end up killing him after wasting 7 hours and untold amounts of money and trouble for the taxpayers. Good job TPD.
