Martin wins, Johnson finishes eight

Our own Jimmie Johnson finished eighth at the Chicagoland Speedway this last Saturday. Teammate Mark Martin won his series-best fourth race of the season and the 39th of his career. Martin gained two positions to 11th in the standings. Martin took the checkered flag a half second ahead of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon (one-two for Hendrick). Kasey Kahne was third, followed by Tony Stewart who still leads in the point’s standings of the Sprint Cup Championship.
“That was fun,” Martin said after the race. “That’s what life’s all about right there. These guys (Martin’s crew) deserved to win. We could have parked the car (Friday) with an hour left in practice. I knew it was awesome. But the best car doesn’t usually win. The double-file restarts are to mess the best car up so he doesn’t win, to make it good for the fans and it did, but luckily we pulled it off anyway.”
As the race neared its end, the action intensified and on lap 251 Jimmie Johnson led the field on the restart but the No. 48 Chevrolet was roughed up in traffic. Johnson, Hamlin and Vickers all were damaged as the cars were maneuvering for position during the next two laps.
“There was a lot of body-slamming out there, and guys were bump-drafting down the straightaways,” Johnson said. “I didn’t think we could do that at a mile-and-a-half track.”
So another exciting day in racing and even though the results were not as high as we would like to see for Jimmie, he is still in the hunt for a fourth straight Sprint Cup Championship. Jimmie Johnson congratulates San Diego Padre Adrian Gonzales

All of us here at Jimmie Johnson Chevrolet in Kearny Mesa would like to congratulate Adrian Gonzales from the San Diego Padres for making the All Star team and for being selected to the Home Run Derby. It is very interesting that four first basemen selected to the All Star Game are contestants in the Home Run Derby. We will be rooting Adrian on during the contest and hope that he does well.

Adrian is considered one of the finest all around first baseman in the major leagues but he gets very little national recognition because he plays here in San Diego. Heath Bell who was also selected to the All Star team as a closing pitcher had this to say about Adrian.

'It's a shame what everyone is missing, because what this guy is doing is amazing. He plays in San Diego, so he's never promoted. You run into people that say, San Diego, oh yeah, wasn't that the team Tony Gwynn played on?'

So again congratulations to both Adrian and Heath Bell and we will be watching them next Tuesday at the All Star game in St. Louis. You see we are not just race fans here at Jimmie Johnson Chevrolet but we do keep track of all sports especially our San Diego teams.

No change in Sprint Cup Points Standings

With a ninth place finish in the race Sunday afternoon at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, our Jimmie Johnson still remains in third place in the Sprint Cup points standings. As a matter of fact there were no major changes in standing of the 12 drivers eligible for the 10-race Chase for the Championship. With nine races remaining, the 12 are Stewart, Gordon, Johnson, Kurt Busch, Edwards, Hamlin, Newman, Kyle Busch, Biffle, Kenseth, Martin and Montoya. One point separates Kahne from Montoya and 12 points separate 14th-place Reutimann from Montoya for 12th spot.

We are starting to get down to the wire so let us keep cheering Jimmie onto another championship which will give him four in a row. Jimmie Johnson Gracious on and off the Race Track

Our own Jimmie Johnson dealt with a pit road speeding penalty and a brush with Kurt Busch to finish fourth at Infineon Raceway. Jimmie trails the top spot by 157 points. After the brush with Busch Jimmie apologized.

The contact with Busch was totally my fault," Johnson said, "and I quickly apologized. That's called a 'noble' gesture. 'Noble' not because it was morally the right thing to do, but 'noble' because it came from nobility, a three-time Sprint Cup champion. You could say I 'championed' the effort. Kurt graciously accepted my apology, although I believe he was a bit offended by my opening line, in which I said, 'Hey Kurt, let me bend your ear for a bit.'"

Kyle Busch’s comment was “I appreciate Jimmie's apology, It's not often a fellow competitor approaches me and says 'I'm sorry.' It's usually 'You're sorry.'"

The top four leaders in the Sprint Cup Standings are:

1. Tony Stewart — Stewart settled for the runner-up spot at the Toyota/Save Mart 350and extended his lead in the Sprint Cup point standings to 84 over Jeff Gordon, who finished ninth.

2. Jeff Gordon — Gordon remained second this week in the points, and now trails Tony Stewart by 84 points.

3. Jimmie Johnson — Our own Jimmie Johnson dealt with a pit road speeding penalty and a brush with Kurt Busch to finish fourth at Infineon Raceway. Jimmie trails the top spot by 157 points.

4. Kurt Busch — Busch did some great driving after the run in with Johnson and finished 15th which kept him fourth in the point standings.

Hendrick Motorsports Dominating

As I look at the standing this week for the Sprint Cup Championship I am amazed at the success that our company, Hendrick Motorsports, is having. Here at Jimmie Johnson Chevrolet in Kearny Mesa of San Diego we are proud to be a part of this fine organization. It is a top notch company from the very top with Rick Hendrick down to the many people who make up all the positions that make this organization work.

As I look over the many blogs out there I see many people think the same way. One blog said that Hendrick seems poised for a new level of dominance. There could be five Hendrick related teams battling for the title as we get ready to go into the season finale. Three of those five are Hendrick drivers including our own Jimmie Johnson who is now third place in the standing. Teammate Jeff Gordon is in second and Mark Martin is in 8th. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is 18th and with changes made to his team he seems to be climbing in the standings.

Of course we want Jimmie Johnson to win his fourth championship this year because we are a part of his team. He feels good about his changes and how things are going right now.

"I think we're doing great," Johnson said. "I really do. I think that the new tire we've had at a lot of the tracks, we're still catching (up) a little bit on that. ... So I think we're understanding where we can be better, and we're addressing that and doing a good job of it."

The No. 80 HendrickCars.com race car was here this past Tuesday. Donnie Gillispie, Show car Representative, for Hendrick Motorsports was here with the No. 80 car that Tony Stewart drove to victory at the season opening Daytona Nationwide Race. The beauty of the car and the noise of the engine drew a crowd that came for a close up look at the Hendrick No. 80 car.

Donnie did an excellent job in presenting the car to the many who stopped by. He answered all of their questions and even posed for some pictures during the day. He says that he enjoys his job very much. The opportunity to travel the country while transporting some of the most popular race cars from the Hendrick Motorsports stable is just a great way to make a living. One of the greatest things about his job is meeting so many interesting people along the way.

Jimmie Johnson, Not enough Gas to Win at the Pocono 500

News from Jimmie Johnson Chevrolet in Kearny Mesa of San Diego; Our own Jimmie Johnson led part of the race at Sunday's Pocono 500 but in Turn three of lap 199 he ran out of gas and coasted across the finish line in seventh place.

"We had a great car," Johnson said. "We drove up through there into the top-5 and just ran out of gas there at the end trying to get by Carl for second."

Jimmie was also penalized for pitting to soon in lap 103 when he did not see any flags or lights showing that caution was on for the race.

"Hopefully we can look at putting better light systems in and flag men," Johnson said. "I didn't know the caution was out and I didn't see light or a flag man or anything. I came to the pits and unfortunately the pits were closed at that point and time."

So right now, Jimmie Johnson is in third place in the Sprint Cup Series points standings. He is just 32 points behind Jeff Gordon and 103 behind leader Tony Stewart.

Chad Knaus Honored

Congratulations to Chad Knaus, crew chief for the No. 48 Chevrolet driven by our own Jimmie Johnson. Chad was named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday's Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway.

After leading for a total of 298 laps Jimmie was called in by Knaus with 36 laps to go for a four-tire change. An unfortunate faulty exchange by the crew put Jimmie back on the track in ninth place. But with precision team work by Johnson and Knaus, the No. 48 Hendrick Chevrolet was able to regain the lead in the final two laps.

"I'm so proud of these guys and Chad," said Johnson, who is currently third in the Series standings. They built me an awesome car and overall we had a solid day on pit road," said Johnson.

Rain Postpones Fifth Annual Prelude to the Dream

HBO and True Speed Communication provided a press release about the postponement of last nights Prelude to the Dream race. It will be rescheduled to run on Sept. 9, 2009.

Rain forced officials at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, to postpone the fifth annual Prelude to the Dream. The all-star dirt race has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9. A decision regarding the broadcast of the event will be made at a later date.

The event that was slated to benefit four military-themed charities – Wounded Warrior Project, Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Operation Homefront and Fisher House.

“We worked really hard to make sure everything was right for the drivers, fans and viewers at home on HBO Pay-Per-View, but the weather was the one element we couldn’t control,” said Tony Stewart, two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and owner of Eldora Speedway.

Those who had already purchased the Prelude to the Dream on HBO Pay-Per-View, which was slated to begin last night, will be refunded.

Jimmie Johnson pulls another one out

In case you missed it… it was a great race this past Sunday at Dover. Our own Jimmie Johnson led 298 laps but the restart on lap 374 put him in eighth place because of a slow pit stop. Johnson was able to catch the leaders Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart to win his fourth Sprint Cup race at Dover, his second of the 2009 season and the 42nd of his career. The finish was very exciting with Jimmie finally finding room to the outside through Turns 1 and 2 and completed the winning pass through the final two corners to take the final lead. His comment after the race was:

"I wasn't going to give up. I had no idea what was going to happen, but I knew I had a great racecar. I knew there were some laps left, and it was just time to go--and I got it done. To have to run that hard to pass that many good cars to get the lead, that's a challenge. I really had to suck it up and get going. I thought I was going to pound the wall a couple of times on the top. I cooked it off in there too fast and slid right up to the crumbs, and I'm like, 'Please stay, please.' And it stuck, and I made it back around."
