Vivian Hall, opened in 1952 and named for Dean Alfred Vivian was home to the university’s dairy plant and agricultural/food science laboratories. Some of the first-floor laboratories and offices are still being used, but much of the building is vacant. Malcolm Cochran (Art) obtained permission for the building to be used for site-specific installations by undergraduate and graduate students. During winter quarter, they have been transforming most of the second floor and some of the larger spaces on the first floor into art installations, according to student Nicole Gibbs.

Each student has selected a room or space in which they are creating their work. “It is important to Professor Cochran that the installations respond to the history, physicality, conditions and/or prior use of the building,” Gibbs says. Materials used in the projects range from video, light and performance to mixed media, paper, plant material and wood construction. One student is making a documentary film about the project and artists.

The Vivian Hall installations will be spotlighted for the public during An Evening with Vivian Sunday, March 9, from 6 to 9 pm at Vivian Hall, 2121 Fyffe Rd on campus, free and open to all. The rankings come from the 2008 design “scorecard” posted by DesignIntelligence. Ohio State trails number-one ranked Art Center College of Design (Pasadena, Cal) and the University of Cincinnati. Last time rankings were compiled, the undergraduate industrial design program at Ohio State was not ranked in the top 10; the graduate program was ranked number 7. It is the ninth time rankings have been issued, based upon annual surveys of 270 professional firms and organizations that hire design graduates. In terms of the recruitment of its graduates Ohio State was highly ranked this year in all four regions of the US. In the DesignIntelligence report, several subcategories lead to the overall assessment of preparedness of graduates. The film tells the epic story of the Nazis' systematic theft of Europe's artistic heritage (it's estimated they stole one-fifth of all known artworks from the countries they conquered) and its miraculous survival. Based on Lynn Nicholas's groundbreaking study, the film shows that although the Allies restored some of the displaced art in the decade after WWII, much still remains unaccounted for.

The Arts Initiativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16651969191409639389noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3641056975134240445.post-12385075279492273912008-01-04T11:14:00.000-05:002008-01-07T10:08:02.382-05:00New Year, New Space!Photo of the Week

Roughly 40 College of the Arts faculty, staff and students braved a cold, wintry evening to have a first look at the new OSU Urban Arts Space downtown. The overall mood is one of quiet intensity and Borst Jones brings out every nuance and color with her delicate phrasing, limpid tone and floating legato tone. Her flute playing is just so open, lyrical, musical and technically sound. Harpist Norton is likewise a superb musician and performer. She is a sensitive and simpatico duo partner so that the two match their attacks, dymanic and tempos perfectly. Truly, this is the music of angels and comes to us from on high while both calming and lifting up our spirits."

The Arts Initiativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16651969191409639389noreply@blogger.com1
