Millionaire Entrepreneur Awards were a BLAST!

My husband and I were blessed to be among the 60 entrepreneurs invited to the first annual David Neagle Million Dollar Entrepreneur Awards January 26 in Carlsbad, CA. WOW! I got to meet so many people that I previously knew only through Facebook...and be inspired by the success of the two award winners, Fabienne Fredrickson and Christine Kloser - with whom I had spent the past week at the Freedom Formula Event too!

One Thing You Must Do When You Read This …

Online marketing experts list blogging right up there near the top of the to-do list for successful marketing strategies and state that blogging is even more important to your business during downturns in the economy. But there are a lot of blogs out there – if everyone is busy writing them, who is reading them?

Do you have a favorite blog? There are blogs for all occasions – some are in bad taste and some are so funny that they're a must-read on a bad day! I like to think my blog is useful… so leave me some feedback and tell me what you think. Better still, tell me what you want to know so I can provide it for you in my blog!

Debunking the 5 Most Common Job Search Myths

As a career coach, my clients look to me for the "truth" of the job market – including the current climate of "belt-tightening." If you are also a Career Coach or consultant, it is important that neither you nor your clients buy into any of the myths below!

Myth 1: No one is hiring in this market. Any time we hear blanket statements from our clients starting with "no one" or "everyone," red flags go up. There is opportunity in any market – it just may be harder to find it sometimes. (If things are so tough, why have I just added an EXTRA VA and Manager to my team?!)

Myth 2: When times are tough, take the first job offer you get. Taking a job in which one is underemployed, dislikes the work, or otherwise is far afield from ideal, just to get a paycheck coming in, can have far-reaching implications. Remind your client that they will have to list that job on their resume for some time to come – is that what they want? Often people compromise out of fear or lack of clarity regarding what is really ideal for them.

Myth 3: If you haven't heard back from an employer to whom you applied, you can assume the job has been filled. Hiring professionals are busy just like your clients are – and they may not get back to a candidate as quickly as they would like. Sometimes, priorities shift, budgets change and filling job openings gets deferred. Job seekers SHOULD make a follow-up phone call if they have not heard back.

Myth 4: You should not apply for a job if you don't have all of the listed qualifications. Employers rarely find absolutely everything they are looking for in a candidate – so if a job seeker has even 75 percent of the listed attributes, they should apply.

Myth 5: You should not contact a company about working for them if they are not advertising open positions. Many job seekers are still unaware that 85 percent of the jobs filled each and every year are never advertised anywhere…this is called the "hidden job market."

I have always loved to learn... haven't you? Whether I was perfecting my piano skills as a child, discovering personal growth programs as a young adult, or learning - and constantly updating - my expertise as a trainer, thought leader and career coach now, there's no substitute for the "high" I get from learning something new!

But something has changed in the past two years: my goals have gotten higher - and so has my investment in learning!

Ari’s Tips for Those who Hate “Selling”

When people think sales, they often conjure up in their mind's eye visions of old fashioned sales people, like an old fashioned used car salesperson whose only technique is "hard sell" and who is willing to throw his grandmother into the bargain if you buy the car there and then, without the test drive!

People in sales are waking up to the fact that old fashioned sales techniques just don't work – if they ever did! We're dealing with real human beings with feelings and concerns and "brains" and nobody likes to feel intimidated into buying something they might not need or want. On the other hand, somebody with an excellent product to sell and who knows it really is what the customer is looking for has a challenge on their hands… too hard a sell and they lose the customer… and if they don't do it right, they'll still lose the customer.

6. When prospects offer objections, validate them and reopen the conversation.

7. Never defend yourself or what you have to offer. This only creates more sales pressure.

Does Public Speaking Make You Tongue Tied?

It takes courage to get up in front of a group of strangers, or anybody for that matter, and talk – and do it confidently! But with seminars, free or otherwise, being one of the best ways to establish your credentials as an expert, to give yourself credibility, to attract more business, you really do need to learn how to be a confident and effective public speaker.

You might not want to be a speaker at a seminar but there will come a time when you will have to stand up in front of an audience and say something! Even if it is to present an award, or say thank you for receiving an award, or just to introduce somebody or make an announcement… Even with teleseminars, when nobody is going to see you, if you aren't a good "speaker", it will come across to the audience.

I'm not going to bore you with lists of where to go to learn this – there are many places who teach public speaking and I urge you to seek them out. I realize public speaking requires you to get out of your comfort zone if you are not at ease in public situations like that and being the centre of attention but practice makes perfect and you CAN learn in small comfortable groups before taking the plunge into the "big time".

Should You Self Publish Your Book?

Last night I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and hearing self-publishing guru Dan Poynter of www.parapublishing.com speak to a combined meeting of the National Speakers Association - Oregon and the Northwest Association of Book Publishers. Wow!! Though he has been writing, publishing and teaching authors, speakers and publishers since 1969 - with 121 books to his credit! - he continues to be up to the moment, with great information and resources that use current technology and providers.

His "New Book Model" is worth emulating by any author, as his approach to leverage through "simultaneous publishing." I was amazed to learn that there are now 86,000 self-publishers now (including my company, High Flight Press!), and that they publish 78 percent of all books.

If you are considering writing and/or publishing your own book, I would recommend you do two things right away:

Is It Okay to Laugh While you’re Making Millions?

This conjures up laughing all the way to the bank, doesn't it… and the Jerry Seinfelds and Ray Romanos of the world are doing just that… but you wouldn't call them "entrepreneurs", would you!

People underestimate humor, although thanks to people like Dr Patch Adams, it has grown in both respectability and popularity – and yet, so many people in business just don't know how to harness its power! We're all so busy making millions… doing serious marketing, balancing our accounts, overseeing the daily running of our business, frowning – all this is quite serious, and unless we have a Robin Williams on our payroll, chances are there might not be much to laugh at on a daily basis!

But humor isn't just good for business – it's good for your health. So now I'm wondering how we can all take our work seriously and yet lighten up, have a laugh at the same time, AND harness this same humor to increase our profits! Hello?
