After selling on eBay for quite some time, I decided to close my eBay store a few weeks ago. I have my own website and besides, who needs eBay anyway? I've used the past few weeks to focus more on my handcrafted things, which has actually been a nice break and a lot of fun.

Earlier this week, after looking around my room full of vintage, I decided to reopen my eBay store. It's been less than 30 days and I did not lose any stored information. My unsold listings were still intact.

I hate to think of summer slipping away.... I love when it's light out when I get up at 5 a.m. and STILL light out at 8:30 p.m.! Having my coffee on the patio, the smell of freshly mown grass, and sweet, tiny grape tomatoes nibbled warm from the garden - these delights make it so hard to pull out the sweaters and coats. But, fortunately, I have these gorgeous wraps to stave off the fast approaching chill in the morning air~ Maybe autumn isn't quite so bad after all!

Project Runway - A Foreign Affair

This week's challenge took the designers to the office of Diane Von Furstenberg, where she made a dramatic entrance down a long set of white steps, and shook hands with what seemed like 30 or so people instead of the few designers that were actually there. She looks great, how old is she? Diane presented the challenge, which was to create an outfit that could go along with her 2008 Collection - 'Foreign Affair'. Her collection was inspired by the Marlene Dietrich film, which is set in Berlin, Shanghai and New York. The winning outfit would be offered for sale exclusively to American Express customers.

Probably the most exciting thing to happen so far this season, for me anyway, was that the designers got to go through Diane's fabric room and choose some of her fabrics to make their outfits! I loved that because I love fabrics, I love looking at them, touching them, drooling on them. Plus Diane Von F is so well known for her beautiful prints and drapey fabrics. Yummy. Fabric lust.

Anyway, someone please slap Blayne upside the head for whatever that thing was he had tied around his head, and for thinking that Diane was 'googling' him and his tan, and for thinking the Olsen twins are a 'fashion legend' Why is here still here?! Sadly Stella Leathuh was the one out. I know she had to go at some time, because this wasn't really her scene. She also didn't seem to be enjoying herself much anymore. But I liked Stella, she was fun. I loved her comment about the 'stylist in the oversized mu-mu'. Joe and Blayne could have gone before her. I liked the idea/look of her vest and pants, although the pants had 'the crotch that women have nightmares about' according to Mme. Kors. It just wasn't made very well, and the cape was wrong.

Leanimal won again this week with a super beautiful 1930s inspired bias cut gown. It had a surprise ruffle down the back. I didn't care much for the coat in the fabric that she used, it seemed kind of too casual. But you can see the dress for sale at $650.00 - with much better pictures than the crappy ones from Project Runway's site. Korto was in 2nd place with a super black and white gown with a splash of yellow. Her jacket doesn't look very good in the photo above, but it was really sharp on the runway. These two are my picks for being in the final 3!

My challenge this week, first I was going to find some Diane Von F dresses currently for sale, but I decided to find something vintage that could represent each city in the movie. Check out these choices and their sellers' listings.

I Can't Let Go of Summer...Not Yet!

I can't do it. I just can't. That is...letting go of summer. The Labor Day weekend is here in Canada which means the official end of summer vacation, kids back to school and fall fashions in the air.

We had such a rainy, cool summer that I refuse to let summer leave without taking in every moment of sunshine available. This weekend happens to be perfect weather.

As soon as the weather turns cold, I will be thinking of my next holiday. Spain was wonderful this year, and my niece wants me to take her to Hawaii next year. How can I refuse such a reasonable request! :-)

So to celebrate our trip to Hawaii, here is a gorgeous cotton maxi dress by Ui-Maikai. White cotton with stunning pink hibiscus flowers and an attached train at the back. When I found this dress, I just loved how perfect the flowers were and could easily see myself wearing it in Hawaii. Then.....

a month later found a matching gent's shirt! Lightening really can strike twice in the same place!

Sydney's Vintage Clothing Opens in Auburn

Sydney's Vintage clothing has opened the doors and expanded her business located in Auburn, AL. I decided that it was time to offer my collection of inventory to the public on a showroom floor and we re-located to Auburn, AL to bring hot vintage fashion to War Eagle Country! I am located at 420 S Gay Street just one block behind the presidents home of Auburn University, a few doors down from the spectacular Amsterdam Cafe. At the moment the tentative store hours are from Mon.-Fri. 11-9 and Sat. 11-10. Designer Spotlight - Emauel Ungaro

Born to Italian parents who had fled to France from Francavilla Fontana,Brindisi because of the fascist Italian government. As a young boy, Emanuel Ungaro took to sewing like his father, Cosimo.

At the age of 22, he moved to Paris and three years later, he began designing for the House of Cristobal Balenciaga for three years before quitting to work for Courrèges. Four years later, in 1965 with the assistance of Swiss artist Sonja Knapp, Emanuel Ungaro opened his own fashion house in Paris.

In 1968, he created his first pret-a-porter collection, Parallèle and opened a boutique at 2, avenue Montaigne in Paris. During the next 30 years, the Emanuel Ungaro House expanded to include boutiques and licensing agreements worldwide.

This week, we are so very proud to able to offer 3 of his vintage dresses in our store! All 3 are exquisite examples of 80s style, Parisian quality, and Italian design!

Evolution of Women's Career Suits

With more women entering the work force during World War II, the clerical jobs formerly occupied by men were filled with women. Trying to maintain some status and not look frivolous in the serious world of commerce and industry, women adopted a Masculine Look with Wide padded shoulders and complete covering from neck to below the knee. But you will notice that they did manage to keep a semblance of femininity with a very fitted waistline and peplum jackets that emphasized their hips.

This lovely Gabardine suit, found on Babylon Mall, is completely dart fitted in front and back and the peplum jacket flares nicely over a pencil slim skirt.

After Johnny Came Marching Home, women we reluctant to give up their new found status in the professional world and some managed to keep their jobs and opened new employment opportunities for young women who wanted a career instead of a life of domestic bliss (notice that both was seldom an option at this time.)

The 50's ushered in a similar but softening look in career wear. These three suits have a less structured feel although in the first shoulder pads are still prominent but smaller. The waist is softened with velvet trim on the jacket and a velvet pocket. The Pumpkin Spice flecked suit is boxy over a still slim skirt. But the fabric flows and shows all those feminine curves within the box. And the 3rd in this series is Femininity Personified. Fitted waist, small peplum that is enhanced with ruched trim and a full flared skirt and don't forget the lower V neckline.

The 60's brought us a very new look with the influence of Jackie Kennedy. Her taste and particular figure requirements brought us the A line skirt and short boxy yet softer jackets. Less emphasis on the waistline and more emphasis on the Total LOOK!

These three beauties are all distinctly tailored for that Classic Chic Jackie Style.

The first is a pink brocade with glittery buttons. The 2nd is a blue shantung with heavily beaded collar and the last is a heavy slubbed silk in pink with cranberry trim and a ruffled cranberry collar.

Just prior to the British Invasion and the MOD era, swingy pleated skirts and lowered waistlines were not only casual and comfy but practical and just plain fun to wear. This fab suit from Donavan Galvani is a cranberry and wine combo. The skirt is pleated and the jacket is semi fitted in the waist with a belt. Shawl collar and ribbed sleeves finish off the look.

Project Runway - Cars

This week's challenge started on the roof of a parking garage with several cars, provided by advertiser Saturn of course. The cars were filled with materials that were used to make the cars, and the designers had to grab whatever they could out of the cars, and fill their little flea market carts (Those carts used to drive me crazy at the flea markets, shoppers use them as weapons and bulldozers to try to beat you to the good stuff, and it's impossible to get around them in a crowd) At first, I wasn't expecting much from this challenge because the materials were all tan and black with some shiny pieces here and there. But the resulting designs were actually quite good. Most of them anyway.
Leanne won this challenge with a dress sculpted from vinyl. Korto was in 2nd place with a jacket made from woven seatbelts, and Jerell was 3rd in a futuristic outfit made from vinyl and plastic silver trims - I didn't care for the model's make-up and hair though, it kind of took away from the outfit. Jerell is the only man who seems to occasionally do interesting designs this season. So far none of the men have really stood out or been consistant in their designs. My prediction is that the final 3/4 will be all gals. Korto has GOT to be in the finals because she usually provides a very good design.
Keith from the Utah Hood was out, finally. Did you feel sorry for all the mean things that you said about him after he cried at the end? No, neither did I. Next on my hit list - Blayne.

Of course I'm not going to be able to find any vintage clothing made from car materials to go with this week's post, so I took the easy route and found some cool items with car prints.

The Thrill of The Hunt...Now What?

Hi, everybody -

I almost feel like I should apologize for not advertising my wares here, but these days I've been far too busy to list anything. The apartment cleanout is almost done. The deceased was not only a hoarder, she hid her best things way in the backs of closets wrapped in paper bags. When I'm at home, I'm constantly doing hand laundry, but the results are worth it!

This kind of work immerses you in another family's history and traditions. There was a pre-World War One Singer Sewing Machine used as a computer table in the husband's combination ham radio station/office/workshop. Photographs dating back to before the turn of the century, when the family lived in Vienna. Many, many objects pertaining to Jewish traditions and rituals. And one of the coolest vintage bars I've ever seen in the entryway:

A group of college guys bought the bar, of course.

Among the clothes I came across, there was this beautiful mink ski jacket, lined in quilted blue:

And so much more! I'm going to take the Labor Day weekend off, float in the ocean, and luxuriate in time spent with my husband and my dog, Bucky.
