Campers need to bring a packed lunch every day and a white t-shirt for decorating on the first day of camp.

This camp is an integrated experience for children who are interested in exploring the world of the arts. Each day will include instruction in dance, music, art and theater--all as part of a rehearsal for the musical theater production “Star Search!” We will learn songs and dances, rehearse lines and make our own costumes! An art, music and dance component plus a short snack break will be included each day. Teachers will work on group skills such as socialization, following instructions, taking turns, playing fair and respecting others. These skills will be encouraged in a creative atmosphere that encourages success and self-confidence. The music component will introduce: songs, finger play, rhymes, counting, organized rhythm, beginning instruments and using the voice. The dance component will introduce: controlling gross motor skills, coordination, stories & movement, balance, relating movement to music and imagination exercises. The art component will introduce: colors, numbers, cutting, gluing, painting, drawing, sculpture, relating art to a story and proper use and care of materials. Limited to 10 children per class! Arts Center Music Students headed for Interlochen!

It may not be what most teens think about when they think about summer vacation, but Arts Center music students Logan Mueller and Jacob Crislip are both hoping to spend their summer studying--music.

Each year, thousands of students from around the world apply for admission into the prestigious six-week summer program at the Interlochen School of the Arts in Michigan.

This year, both Logan and Jacob were awarded admission into the program. Jacob was awarded admission into the Intermiediate Boys Piano Division. During this time, he will be among the top 2,500 music, drama and dance students from around the world selected to partcipate.

Logan was not only accepted into the program, but he placed 5th in the entire nation

Logan, age 15, is a sophomore at Edgewood Senior High School. Currently, he is 1st chair in both Symphonic Band and the Jazz Ensemble. On the weekends he spends his time in Cleveland where he participates in Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and Cleveland Youth Wind Symphony.

Jacob is an 8th grade student at Wallace Braden Jr. High School where he maintains a 4.0 grade point average. He has studied piano for 7 years under Natella Askerova and trumpet for 4 years under James Fuller. Jacob was one of 14 junior and senior high school students selected to participate in The Kent State University Piano Institute in 2008 with a final solo performance at Severance Hall in Cleveland. He will also soon audition for the Cleveland Institute of Music Summer Sonata.
We are excited to have not just one, but two such talented and hardworking students in our music program! Congratulations!

Although accepted, both boys need sponsors to help them raise the Interlochen tuition fee if they are going to participate. If you would be willing to make a contribution to one or both boys, please call the Arts Center at 964-3396.

Winter Print Shop

No School - January 19

Come to the Arts Center and explore the world of printmaking. Students will create their own linoleum block design, try their hand at Japanese woodcut style printing, use a silk screen, print with rubber stamps, stencil a design and even print with a fish. Kitchen Cupboard Concoctions

Do you like mixing up things you find in the kitchen cabinets? Spend a whole day at the Arts Center trying out tested recipes for cool mixtures you can make from things you have at home in the cupboards. We will make: Scratch-n-Sniff Watercolors, Funny Putty, Paper Clay, Instant Cocoa Mix,Shaving Cream Marbling, Fruity Lip Gloss, Tubtime Crayons, Snow Paint, Frozen Bubbles and more! Space is limited. AYC Regatta Raises $4000 for the Arts!

The 21st annual Regatta for the Arts sailed beneath sunny skies on Sunday, June 15th. Held by Ashtabula Yacht Club, this year's Regatta featured 18 boats on a course started by the United States Coast Guard--an Ashtabula first! The Regatta is the only fundraiser conducted by the AYC. Area businesses and individuals generously made monetary pledges to sponsor boats in the race with the proceeds wholly benefiting the Arts Center. This year, approximately $4000 was raised. A party for sponsors, skippers and crew was sponsored by Scot Sinkler and Janney Montgomery Scott at the Ashtabula Yacht Club following the race.

Ashtabula Arts Center 5k Prediction Run/Walk

Come on out to the Arts Center on Saturday, July 19th and take part in the 5k prediction run/walk. Not just for athletes, this event is open to anyone and participants will run and/or walk at their own pace. Everyone has a chance to win!

Here is how it works. Before the race begins, participants will guess how long it will take them to complete the 5k distance. Then everyone runs and/or walks the route which winds through our scenic Ashtabula Harbor. Leave your watches at home! No timing devices will be allowed. Those that finish closest to their predicted time win! In addition to awards for the winners and door prizes, every entrant will receive a free ticket good for a G. B. Community Theatre show next season.

Registration begins at the Arts Center at 8 a.m. The race begins at 9 a.m. Registration fees are $10 adults and $6 students. Registration forms can also be picked up at the Arts Center’s front desk. All proceeds will benefit the Ashtabula Arts Center.

Show your support for the Arts Center and join the fun by grabbing your running shoes, grabbing a friend and coming out to compete in this annual fundraiser!

Nationally known and award winning watercolor artist, Frederick C. Graff will be traveling to Ashtabula this summer to present a watercolor workshop at the Ashtabula Arts Center. The workshop will be conducted “on location.” Students will paint at selected sites in the area, taking advantage of the local beauty of Ashtabula County’s shoreline, adjacent harbor views and other architectural subject matter.

Graff is one of today’s leading artists and educators in the field of watercolor painting. A “Signature Member” of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society and Transparent Watercolor Society, Graff has been conducting his informative and creative workshops for 37 years.

He has been accepted into numerous top national, state and regional exhibits and his diverse approach to painting continues to attract individual and corporate collectors including : Permanent Collection of the Governor’s Mansion of Ohio; Bank One; Wausau Insurance Co.; General Tire; Mobay Chemical; Union Carbide; Key Bank and many other corporate and private collections.

Each of Graff’s workshops is designed to meet the specific needs of the participants. Graff gives careful consideration to each group’s area of interest, level of ability and general knowledge of watercolor.

Graff’s workshops include a series of exercises, lectures and demonstrations that enable students to fully understand how to develop a painting that reinforces the principles and elements of design. The different concepts introduced will enlighten both traditional and contemporary watercolor artists.

“When an artist understands the basic principles and elements of design,” says Graff, “the subject matter becomes unlimited. The selection of my subject matter is determined by my immediate response to the subject and its surrounding environment. It is essential that I go beyond the level of just recording facts. It is my intent to convey a spontaneous response in an unrestricted yet semi-controlled manner. This approach to watercolor painting lends itself to a unique and unpredictable experience. This state of uncertainty compels me to further explore the world of watercolor.”

In addition to the Ashtabula workshop, Graff will be holding 2008 workshops in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Stonington, Maine. He will also be doing a European Watercolor Workshop in Puy L’Eveque, France next fall.

Women's Service League Awards Scholarships

Women’ Service League of Ashtabula County, Inc. has awarded college scholarships to three students at the Ashtabula Arts Center. Cara Seymour, Heather Helms and Carmen Sandella are this year’s scholarship recipients.

Heather Helms is a 2007 graduate of Madison High School and will be attending Kent State University in the fall She has a very long list of theatre credits, many of those with G. B. Community Theatre and Straw Hat Theatre including this past years, Kids On Broadway, Streakin’ a Flashback to the 70’s and Seussical the Musical.

Carmen Sandella is a 2007 graduate of Jefferson High School. He has studied keyboard for 10 years with Lyn Savarise and studied guitar with Randy Coutts. Carmen will be attending Kent State Ashtabula pursuing a career in Music Production.

Cara Seymour is a 2007 graduate of Lakeside High School. Cara has been dancing at the Arts Center for many years, ever since she first saw “Clara” dance across the stage in a production of Nutcracker. She will be one of only 12 dancers chosen to attend Julliard School of Dance this fall.

Women’s Service League and the Arts Center send best wishes and the best of luck to these bright and talented young students!

We all have our favorite Christmas Books like "The Night Before Christmas" or "The Polar Express." This holiday Kids Day Out will feature projects inspired by children's Christmas books. We will make ornaments and decorations featured in richly illustrated books like "Christmas Day in the Morning" and "Christmas in the Big Woods." We will bake cookies and make cocoa. It will be a day filled with activities and stories to put everyone in the spirit of Christmas. The children may even come home with a new favorite Christmas story and will certainly have many crafts to share.

Ashtabula Foundation Awards Grant to Arts Center

Over the next several weeks, visitors to the Arts Center will notice that things are a bit out of place. Canvas drapes pianos, students are moved to alternate classrooms, paint cans and buckets are tucked into corners and workmen are scattered throughout hallways and studios. We hope you will be patient with us during the many, much needed improvements which we are now able to make thanks to the generosity of the Ashtabula Foundation.

Early in August the Ashtabula Arts Center learned it has received a $35,980.00 grant from the Ashtabula Foundation to repaint and/or restore walls, ceilings, window surfaces and ductwork throughout the facility.

The original part of the Arts Center’s building was dedicated in 1973. This includes the main entrance, art rooms, former dance studio, galleries and offices. In 1975, a music wing was added. The only portions of that addition still in the original state are the music studios and the hallway to the backstage area. In 1987, the Center’s performing arts wing was added including the green room and the dressing rooms. A large portion of the 1975 addition was remodeled to add to this new wing. All of the above construction projects were funded in large part through the Civic Development Corporation.

None of these spaces have ever been professionally repainted and/or refinished. In fact, volunteers with huge assistance from our local Pepsi distributor were completely responsible for the painting of the performing arts wing. Areas of the Arts Center to be included in the Ashtabula Foundation’s grant will be all areas in our original building, music studios and hallways outside the theater and up to the dance wing doors, the green room, the kitchen and most offices. Hughes Roller Building Company is the successful bidder on this work. The project got underway late in August and we’re hoping work will be completed by mid-October. At the completion of the painting, the Arts Center will have new carpeting installed throughout the building. Funding for the carpeting will come from the Arts Center’s Asset Preservation Account, a fund set up specifically for this type of purpose. A final touch to our revitalization will be replacement of our exhibit panels. These panels were last replaced in 1987 and receive constant use due to our monthly rotating art exhibits.

Our facility is a very busy place. Fall classes will begin in September, as will our G.B. Community Theatre season. We thank you for understanding our need to preserve our building and for bearing with us during these hectic weeks.

Halloween Kids Day Out and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow!

Halloween Activities For Kids And Adults On Friday

The Ashtabula Arts Center at 2928 West 13th Street in Ashtabula, will once again hold their annual Halloween Kids Day Out on Friday, October 13 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. This day of stories, crafts and halloween fun for students in grades 1-6, is offered on NEOTA day—a day that area children have off from school. Parents need to drop their child off by 9 a.m. with a packed lunch. Cost per child is $30.

As a part of this activity day, Cleveland Opera on Tour, the educational and outreach wing of Cleveland Opera, will present a 50 minute children’s opera, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at 1:00 p.m. Children attending Halloween Kids Day Out will receive a ticket to this show.

The public is also invited to attend the production. It is not necessary to have a child enrolled in Kids Day Out. Tickets to just the performance of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” are $7 for adults and $5 for children. They can be purchased at the Arts Center or by calling (440) 964-3396.

Based on the famous Washington Irving story, this Halloween classic tale is brimming with special effects. Three eerie trees revolve to become a farmhouse, Ichabod’s classroom, and Katrina’s parlor. When Ichabod tries to return home through Sleepy Hollow, the set grows dark and the Headless Horseman appears from nowhere!

The opera has been scored for accompaniment by and travels with a Kurzweil electronic keyboard which can produce orchestral sounds. The result is a rich musical experience, much fuller than possible with piano alone.
