Small but large enough to enjoy months of exploring all the historical places. Meet and chat to the locals and enjoy the Maltese cousine. From April to October the weather is close to perfect. Lots of sunshine. Three hot months to enjoy the beaches. Festas and fireworks on every weekend. Its a great place and a safe holiday destination.
So much history belongs to this place. It was a well fortified Fort during WW2 with batteries of coastal and anti aircraft guns. It was manned by the Maltese Army (R.M.A.)
I worked at this Fort during 1948-1951 with the British Army Engineers carrying out modifications on the coastal guns. It's a fairly large place with stairways dug in rock going down right to sea level.
The main Engine Room / Power Plant was situated below ground level, deep down and practically bomb proof. A place that one must visit when visiting Malta.
My maternal grandfather was a Naval diver and he was one of a team of about thirty divers that worked on the construction of the breakwater at Ricasoli and St Elmo side of the Harbour. Till 1615 Zabbar together with Marsaskala, still formed part of the parish of Zejtun.

650 people inhabited Zabbar and they rightly begged the bishop to establish Zabbar as a separate and independent parish. The bishop acceded to their request and Rev. Angelo Pontremoli was appointed parish priest of the new parish of Zabbar.

As was the practice, Bishop Cagliares established the limits of the young parish.
As a matter of fact, a section of modern Marsaskala remained within the limits of Zejtun, while another part, which included the area where the first parish church of Marsaskala was built, fell within the limits of Zabbar.

It is possible that the Three Crosses at Bidni were put up as an indication of the place where the limits of Zejtun and Zabbar met.

Guże' Muscat Azzopardi gives three traditional versions regarding the origin of these crosses: three monks were killed by the Turks and buried here; a man died of the plague and was buried by the people of Zejtun; an elderly hermit was for three times buried here after repeatedly arising from death. Undoubtedly this last version has not a grain of truth in it.

* berzy *noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3633976605166080816.post-7622165365005219312008-06-21T19:19:00.000-07:002008-06-21T19:35:34.535-07:00The Very Best of Malta - 2008<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_o7AsjCrD7Ro/SF220qEOKdI/AAAAAAAAAVU/bolW33s1Hmg/s400/aasquare.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5214524959326349778" />

ENTER * HERE *

Click on first photo and select PLAY

Photos by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech of Malta.

* berzy *noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3633976605166080816.post-87354245629237088052008-06-08T00:01:00.000-07:002008-06-08T00:08:22.586-07:00The Maltese ' Luzzu ' -<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_o7AsjCrD7Ro/SEuE1YfVh3I/AAAAAAAAAUc/xTl7PFyh03o/s400/mxlokk+boat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209403446625929074" />

* berzy *noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3633976605166080816.post-3027500573974060082008-06-01T01:32:00.000-07:002008-07-15T23:28:27.599-07:00The *BOAT* the *SEA* the *FORTS*<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_o7AsjCrD7Ro/SEJe_4362rI/AAAAAAAAAT8/i8X3I-4e77Q/s400/dghajsa.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5206828570885413554" />

The beautiful and popular Maltese 'dghajsa'.
