New Location

I am very excited to announce that DHP Home Delivery is now moved into our new location. For the past nine months we've been constructing a new warehouse and customer service facility that will allow us to better serve our customers. Our new facility is still located in Albertville, Alabama. We have increased our warehouse space which gives us the ability for larger inventory capacity and our customer service center is substanitally larger. I had an employee ask me today if Curafil Gel was similar to Neosporone. My answer of course was no and being of curious nature he asked me what the difference was. So, in my usual way of explaining things I shared some interesting documentation with him that cleared this up. I thought it would be a good idea to share this with our readers.

Curafil Gel is an Amorphous Hydrogel. Ok, what the heck does this mean?

Amorphous hydrogel is a viscous, clear, shapeless and conforming product that is slightly absorbent. It is composed of purified water, Glycerine (which acts as a humectant), glyceryl polymethacrylate (for mild absorption), carbomer sodium ( a gel forming agent) and Germaben ( a preservative to extend the gel's life).

Curafil Gel features a soft gel that comforms well to the wound and provides a moist wound healing environment. Because of its unique glycerine formulation, it will not dry out, which helps to reduce the frequency of any required dressing changes. When used with an occlusive dressing, Curafil Gel can help to promote autolysis. The preservative system (Gemaben II) does not allow bacteria to grow within the gel. This extends the life of the tube and helps to reduce costs when reused. The transparency of the gel allows a clear view of the wound and it remains clear even after extended use. Thermazene Cream...a product for every household

Several months ago I was barbecuing Boston butts (pork butts) with the men of my church to raise money for charity. Our goal was to cook and sell at least 100 butts (If I knew what else to call them I would). We set up three large smokers (grills that cook with smoke from wood fire and charcoal), seasoned the meat and got after it. It took us about 6 hours to get the meat close to being done. We then wrapped them (the butts) in aluminum foil to keep from scorching and placed them all back on the smokers for about another 2 hours. We checked the temperature of each piece of meat (that sounded better) and removed them one by one when they were ready. We had to be careful because the foil trapped in hot juices that could spill out. I put on my heavy duty work gloves and starting taking the meat off. I was almost done when I picked up one of the butts and the foil came loose and spilled piping hot juice all over my left arm. Without flinching, I put down the meat and made my way quickly over to the water hose. I soaked my arm down with cool water for several minutes but the burning sensation was still intense. One of my colleagues wanted to take me to the emergency room for treatment but I refused. I remembered I had plenty of Thermazene cream in stock at work so I headed to the office. It didn't take me long to put on the first application and incredibly the pain stopped instantly. I reapplied the cream a few times a day for the next couple of days and was pain free and without a scar. Though I never went to the doctor, I am convinced I had a second degree burn.

Since this incident, I have made sure that all of my friends and family bought a jar to keep in their medicine cabinet and I strongly recommend that everyone do the same.

I saw on the news this morning where Vice President Dick Cheney has a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)or blood clot in his leg. Apparently he had travelled some 65 hours via airplane in about a nine day period. What the Vice President experienced is called a Travel Thrombosis or Economy Class Syndrome (though I doubt he travels economy class).

Travel Thrombosis or Economy Class Syndrome is a blood clot that develops in the legs particularly during extended travel, when a lengthy period of immobility has resulted in poor circulation or placed undue stress on veins. When dehydration, high altitude and low cabin pressure are also factored in, the risk of clot formation increases. As mentioned here and in previous posts, another name for a blood clot that forms in the legs is DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis).

When a DVT forms and does not dissolve on its own, it can travel through the bloodstream and lodge in the lungs, resulting in a serious and often fatal condition called Pulmonary Embolism (PE). The incidence of both DVT and PE has been proven to significantly increase during extended periods of travel.

Anyone subjected to cramped conditions for extended period of time could be at risk for travel-related thrombosis. Factors that increase risk are:

1. Age of 40 or older
2. Recent travel
3. Excess weight or obesity
4. Recent surgery or trauma
5. Family history of DVT or prior DVT
6. Varicose veins
7. pregnancy
8. Oral contraceptives or hormone replacement
9. Malignant disease (cancer)
10. Existing heart disease

There are several common-sense precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk of Travel Thrombosis, including;

1. Walking frequently or regularly exercising your legs while in transit
2. Drinking plenty of fluids
3. Limiting consumption of alcohol
4. Wearing compression stocking or travel socks

What are travel socks and how can they help?

We now have TEN product lines available in our online store and coming soon we will be adding several more. In case you didn't know Kendall Healthcare manufactures thousands of different healthcare products that are found in hospitals and homes all over the world. We are Super Secure

I'm happy to announce that DHP Home Delivery Company is one of the first companies to implement the latest in security measures once products or services are purchased over the internet. We are now using Micosoft's Internet Explorer 7, which is one of the first Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption certificates with Extended Validation (EV).

EV SSL certificates are the latest efforts to counteract "phishing" scams online, in which fraudulent websites trick Internet users into divulging accoutn numbers and passwords by mimicking legitimate businesses. The new certificates require documentation and authentication to isure that the applicants are who they claim to be. Additionally, the certificates are only available to corporations and other traditionally larger businesses- sole proprietorships and general partnerships, for example, are ineligible.

The latest version of Internet Explorer is now updated with a new feature that changes the color of the address bar. For confirmed phishing sites, the bar turns red and for sites with the new EV SSL certificates, it turns green.

What is Deep Vein Thrombosis?

Deep vein thrombosis, commonly referred to as "DVT", occurs when a blood clot, or thrombosus develops in the large veins of the legs or pelvic area. Some DVT's may cause no pain, whereas others can be quite painful. With prompt diagnosis and treatment, the majority of DVT's are not life threatening. However, a blood clot that forms in the invisible "deep veins" can be an immediate threat to your life, as compared to a clot that forms in the visible "superficial" veins, the ones beneath your skin. A clot that forms in the large, deep veins is more likely to break free and travel through the skin. It is then called embolus. When an embolus travels from the legs or pelvic areas and lodges in a lung artery, the condition is known as a "pulmonary embolism", or PE, a potentially fatal condition if not immediately diagnoses and treated.

What are the causes of DVT?

Generally, a DVT is caused by a combination of two or three underlying conditions:

slow or sluggish blood flow through a deep vein
a tendency for a person's blood to clot quickly
irritation or inflammation of the inner lining of the vein

There are a variety of settings in which this clotting process can occur. First, individuals on bed rest (such as during or after surgical procedure or medical illness, such as heart attack or stroke), or confined and unable to walk (such as during prolonged air or car travel) are common settings. It can occur in certain families in whom there is a history of parents or siblings who have suffered from prior blood clots. It can also occur in individuals whom active cancer or its treatment may predispose the blood to clotting.

Having a recent major surgical procedure, especially a hip and knee orthopedic surgeries or those requiring prolonged bed rest, predispose the blood to clotting. Irritation or inflammation occurs when a leg vein is injured by a major accident or medical procedure.

Also, there are specific medical conditions that may increase your risk of developing a DVT via these three mechanisms, such as congestive heart failure, severe obesity, chronic respitory failure, a history of smoking, varicose veins, pregnancy and estrogen treatment. If you are concerned that you may be at risk due to any of these conditions , please consult with your physician.

Washcloths for the troops

I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to be in the hot deserts of Iraq for months and months. Our troops are really something else. Not only do they have to endure the conditions but they are at many times in harms way. About a year ago, I was contacted by the wife of a soldier serving in Iraq. She wanted to purchase our Wings personal cleansing washcloths for her husband. She mentioned to me that the troops sometimes go days without a shower and the wind, sand and heat really play havoc on her husband. We talked for a while and by the end of the conversation I donated a case to her with only one condition. She was to report back to me on how well the washcloths performed for her husband. Well about a month or so went by and indeed she called me back. She had a message from her husband to tell me how great our washcloths were and that he shared them with a few of his buddies. We get this question quite often and it's totally understandable. People want to know where they are calling or sending web orders to. It's also a quick ice breaker for conversation. We are located in Albertville, Alabama. Albertville is in the northeast part of the state about 50 miles south of Huntsville and 60 miles north of Birmingham. Albertville rests on Sand Mountain which is one the largest plateau's in the country. It is considered to be the "fire hydrant" capital of the world. This is becuase the Mueller Co. resides here and manufacturers fire hydrants. Even when I was living in Denver, CO. I always felt close to home because the fire hydrant in my front yard said Albertville, Alabama on it. Albertville is in a beautiful part of the state and offers many outdoor activities. Lake Guntersville is only a few miles away which is part of the Tennessee River. It's probably the biggest bass fishing lake in the south but, the best part about Albertville is the people. We strive to process and ship all orders the day we receive them. Of course, we are closed on the weekends so these orders will usually ship the following Monday. The only delay you may experience is if the product you ordered is on back order. This means that the manufacturer is currently out of stock. This issue is typically resolved in a few days. Otherwise it takes between one and five business days to receive your package. We use UPS ground as our carrier. We have found that they provide an excellent level of service. Over the past several months I've been working with our web developer Kinetic Communications to make improvements to our web-site and online store. The folks at Kinetic have done a fine job for us and I am sure this relationship will last for many years to come. Just last week they gave me a training session on how to add products to our store. In the past I had to sub this work out. You may or may not have noticed but not all of our products listings are in the online store. This is soon to change! In the upcoming weeks ahead I will be adding Kendall Thermometry products to the store.
