Howdy,

Taproot's roving reporter from Austin, the mysteriously single-named Phil, is in charge of scoping out the hippest acts from 6th Street and surrounding environs. His most recent discovery is Uncle Lucius who is billed as "the next Black Crowes." When Phil told me about this band, my iniital reaction was "Sacriledge!" But now I'm willing to accept that the Mt Olympus of southern rock may have room for two bands.

The other pleasant discovery this week is a band called the Mayflies. They have a couple or three CDs out, the latest is called A Thousand Small Things. I guess I'd call their music a country rock sorta thing, but it's got a positive energy to it kinda like a jam band.

Lastly, Shelley King's CD, Welcome Home had been sitting on my slush pile for way to long and when I started sampling the tracks I was kicking myself for ot getting it into rotation much much sooner. I guess I'd call it hill country music with a gospel influence and maybe there's a hint of Band of Heathens thrown in. There are folks from the subdudes in her latest line up which explains a lot of that. Very good listening.

Howdy,

We had a great but non-traditional Turkey day around here. Instead of cooking the same old turkey and stuffing, we smoked a brisket and had potato salad, ranch style beans, and Shiner Bock beer while we watched football. It was great. The day after, instead of fighting the crowds at the stores, my Dad and I went to the local firing range and punched holes in paper targets. It was great!

The big news this week is that Heavy Trash has a new CD out, Midnight Soul Serenade. Actually, I think it's been out for a while but I just heard about it this week and I'm super psyched about it. They played at the Local 506 on Friday and I've put their show online here. They're digging deeper into their future-retro-psycho-spaced-out-rockabilly-punk vibe. This one's got top 10 written all over it from what I've heard so far.

Heavy Trash is back on the road pushing their latest CD, Midnight Soul Serenade. They continue their retro-future-psycho-rockabilly-punk vibe just like they did on their previous CDs, Going Way Out and their self-titled CD. This new CD moves into more of the spaced out psychadelic territory, but the roots rock base keeps it all together.

Howdy,

I had the pleasure of seeing Eilen Jewel's show at The Berkeley Cafe in Raleigh this past Friday. I don't think many folk singers can make a little black dress with pearls work with cowboy boots, but she does it with style and grace. And musically she's just as adept at making the music of Loretta Lynn and George Jones sound right at home with the music of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. Notes and recordings from her show are online at the web site.

Also this week I added three tracks from the Avett Brothers latest CD I And Love And You to rotation this week, I'm still getting used to the smoother sound from them on this CD. But I know lots of people are really getting into it. I hop we get to seem come back home to North Carolina for some live shows soon.

I had the great pleasure of attending Eilen Jewel's show at the Berkeley Cafe on Friday, November 13, 2009. Her show was largely the same material that she played at her recent Shakori Hills show, but this is a very good thing, given that her original material is so strong and her choice of cover material fits her style. Covering everyone from George Jones to Billie Holiday to Loretta Lynn to Bessie Smith, Eilen Jewel has an amazing knack for making lots of different styles go together

I had the opportunity to record her show which I've posted here. All of Eilen Jewel's here CDs are available on iTunes and while I recommend all of them, her latest CD Sea of Tears is a must buy and it will be making lots of "Best of 2009" lists this year.

FAR Chart #123

The Freeform American Roots Chart #123 has just come out. Arty Hill continues to be a favorite among FAR reporters. But what really makes me happy is to see Jo Serrapere tie for second. Her CD, Love Going South, is not the usual fare for FAR Chart CDs. It's much more sultry, and edgy than a lot of CDs we get. On the other hand, Lyle Lovett's CD debuted at #9 with just a few weeks out. So that's a very good showing from the Texas Troubador. I was a little surprised that Band of Heathens did not fare better. Maybe next month they'll move up the charts.

I'm happy to report CD adds this week for two local artists into Taproot Radio. Joe Swank and the Zen Pirates have released their long-awaited and much anticipated CD, Hank Williams Died For My Sins, which is destined to be an alt.country classic. Also this week, Jon Shain's latest CD, Times Right Now hits the airwaves. Known for his Piedmont Blues style, Jon Shain mixes in some New Orleans influences in this CD. Look for both at your local live music venues and check them out when you can.

This week, I've also got new music from two popular acts on Taproot Radio. Lyle Lovett has released a new collection of Texas folk songs, called Natural Forces and (finally!) we have a new rockabilly CD from The Rev. Horton Heat!

Howdy,

Been doing a lot of cleaning out around the house. My version of spring cleaning I guess, abut the usual amount of lateness. And I've also been doing some spring cleaning on the hard drive and found a album from Vince Mira coverng a bunch of Cash songs and lord they're good. So even though the CDs' been out for a while, I'm throwing it into heavy rotation because its so dang good. There's a couple of novelty songs on the CD, spanish versions of "I Walk The Line" and "Ring of Fire." But the tracks that blew me away were the covers of "Cold Hearted Woman" and "Blistered."

The other notable CD this week was from Doug and Telisha Williams. Their latest CD, Ghost of the Knoxville Girl" reminds me of an acoustic version of Trailer Bride. Also this week I added new Brian Seztzer and rockabilly from Quarter Mile Combo, so the next few weeks are gonna swing on Taproot Radio....
