Does anybody know how Father’s Day started and everything it went through just to have it made official. I myself think it’s good because of course if we have Mother’s Day then there should be Father’s Day. They too are very important in how we became what we are now. Let me give you an idea of how Father’s Day started.

Father's Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on the third Sunday of June in the USA and on various other days in many places around the world. It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers.

Father's Day is a celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.

Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church at Spokane, and she arranged a tribute for her father on June 19, 1910. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers.

Father's Day was met with laughter. The holiday was gathering attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons. It was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspaper. Many people saw it as just the first step in filling the calendar with mindless promotions like "Grandparents' Day", "Professional Secretaries' Day", etc., all the way down to "National Clean Your Desk Day."

A bill was introduced in 1913, US President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea in 1924 and a national committee was formed in the 1930s by trade groups in order to legitimize the holiday. It was made a federal holiday when President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966.

This is the day when we can show our Father how much we love them and appreciate them. We can do that by doing something special like taking them out for dinner or giving them precious gifts like jewelry. Let this be just a day for them.

“Collect”, an international fair for contemporary objects, which opens in London later this month, will show a number of artists who explore concepts of preciousness, value and beauty by subverting traditional materials and techniques. Some are German, Swiss and British, as well as Dutch. Otto Künzli famously made a rubber bracelet concealing a gold ball inside. Karl Fritsch ground gemstones into powder and reassembled them with glue. He is now experimenting with drilling holes in the gems and knotting them together in varying configurations. Gijs Bakker, co-founder of Droog, a design company, combines gemstones with costume pieces. Ulrich Reithofer combines gold and glass shards in a necklace.

This is jewelry offering a very different expression of identity. The wearer of such pieces challenges preconceived notions. It can include a whiff of intellectual snobbery, as the wearer can be seen as “buying a bit of the artist’s brain”.

Some of them might not be wearable but only for expression of art purposes but some of them are and they are very unique and very much modern. Be adventurous and have them, besides, everything is a work of art depending on how art is to each individual.

Blue Diamond Auctioned for Record $9.49 Million

A flawless vivid blue diamond weighing 7.03 carats sold for a record 10.5 million Swiss francs ($9.49 million), the highest price paid per carat for any gemstone at auction, Sotheby's said. The rectangular-shaped blue stone, the rarest to enter the international market this year, went to an anonymous buyer bidding by telephone after hectic bidding see-sawed between two callers for 15 minutes.

According to Petra’s CEO Johan Dippenaar, the price reflects how incredibly rare and collectable such a diamond is to the connoisseur. “The renowned Cullinan mine continues to captivate the world with spectacular diamonds, building on its legacy as the source of some of the world’s most famous gems.”

It was the centerpiece of its semi-annual sale in Geneva, conducted by David Bennett, chairman of Sotheby's jewelry department in Europe and the Middle East, who said the results showed the market's resilience despite the economic downturn.
"This is already a new world record price for a fancy vivid blue diamond and a new world record per carat for any gemstone (at auction)," Bennett told reporters.
The final price includes a commission paid by the buyer to the auction house. The stone sets a record price per carat for any gemstone sold at auction of $1,349,752, Sotheby's said.

The new owner will have the right to name the stone, which is mounted in a platinum ring.

Christians believe only Jesus can give eternal life, because He overcame death.

Oscar's Night 2009 Glitz and Glamour

Most of America was tuned into the 81st Academy Awards on Sunday night and watching E!'s red carpet coverage to get a thorough review of everyone's outfits! Since the Oscars are the pinnacle of the award show season, we expected the usual overflow of jaw-dropping ensembles. But surprisingly, a lot of artists decided to come out conservative with the Jewelries they wear. But ofcourse, there were some also that was a standout. Here is to name a few:

Sometimes all it takes to truly make waves on the red carpet is the perfect black dress. Angelina Jolie reminded us of this fashion fact in her floor-length raven Elie Saab Couture Dress. To finish, the actress punched up her already-untouchable status with a pair of 115-carat Lorraine Schwartz emerald teardrop earrings (plus a matching 65-carat ring) and a Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch. In short: she looked super luxurious and very villainess chic.

Jewelry was big at the Oscars this year, but nothing was as big as the 19th Century Diamond Flower Necklaces from Fred Leighton, seen above on Taraji P. Henson.

So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Scientists are reporting that diamonds could have created chemical reactions billions of years ago that were believed to have caused life on Earth.

Diamonds may have been life's best friend. Billions of years ago, the surface of these gems may have provided just the right conditions to foster the chemical reactions believed to have given rise to life on Earth, researchers in Germany reports.

In the new study conducted, Andrei Sommer, Dan Zhu, and Hans-Joerg Fecht point out that scientists have theorized for years that the chemical precursors of life gradually evolved from a so-called "primordial soup" of simpler molecules. But the details of how these simpler amino acid molecules, the building blocks of life, were assembled into complex polymers, remains one of science's long standing mysteries.

To find out, the research team studied diamonds, crystallized forms of carbon which are older than the earliest forms of life on Earth. In a series of laboratory experiments, the scientists showed that after treatment with hydrogen, natural diamond forms crystalline layers of water on its surface, essential for the development of life, and involved in electrical conductivity.

When primitive molecules landed on the surface of these hydrogenated diamonds in the atmosphere of early Earth, the resulting reaction may have been sufficient enough to generate more complex organic molecules that eventually gave rise to life, researchers say.

The first formally declared Day of Thanksgiving was June 29, 1676, and President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving Day. How about that!

Thanksgiving is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in America. All across the country, millions of Americans stuff turkeys, decorate the dinner table, and give thanks to God for a variety of things. Of particular interest to non-Americans and native Americans alike, is its history.Now celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, Thanksgiving was officially declared this date of celebration by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939. However it wasn't until a year later, that President Roosevelt signed this declaration into US law.

Today, Thanksgiving is also known as Turkey Day (from the traditional Thanksgiving dinner), T-Day (abbreviation for "Thanksgiving" or "Turkey"), or Macy's Day (in reference to Macy's Thanksgiving day parade). T-Day from its very conception began way back in the 1600s when Pilgrims held a three-day feast to celebrate their survival and harvest of their first winter in North America. From its conception, Thanksgiving has always been a family ordeal, celebrated with a feast of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce. For dessert, pumpkin pie and/or pecan pie is usually enjoyed. Of course, variations of how these dishes are served are found in secular parts of the country and within each culture. Some people like to include oysters in their Thanksgiving stuffing, for example, while others like to eat duck instead of turkey. In Louisiana, some people likes to cook a stuffed duck inside of a stuffed turkey! Vegetarians may eat tofurkey (healthy healthy), which is a creative way of serving tofu - a strategy that may or may not contribute the to the fact that over forty-four millions turkeys are eaten every year!

The internet is a shopping destination of choice for the rich -- and the one most preferred by the very rich, according to a study from Google. The study, which looked at wealthy shoppers ages 25 to 64, bucks the conventional wisdom that luxury shoppers prefer the in-store experience. It finds that while both segments shop online, millionaires vastly prefer online shopping to in-store and are much more likely to use the internet than their not-quite-as-wealthy brethren.

Nothing against stick figures, but our logo designs have become rather more varied since then. Today you'll see a special design that commemorates our 10th birthday. Jewelry And Skin Allergy - Precautions & Care

The allergy that occurs by wearing fine jewelry or costume jewelry is referred as Nickel dermatitis or Contact dermatitis or Nickel allergy. It is basically a contact allergy. It can happen anytime at any age. Every single human body reacts to different degree with nickel depending upon the tolerance and susceptibility level.

Jewelry is treasured all over the universe. It is but true, that many people cannot wear jewelry in spite of their deep desire to wear it. Jewelry allergy is a common complaint from many people. Few even mention that they are allergic to gold and silver. The main cause of these allergies is the nickel content present in the gold and silver jewelry. Pure gold and silver metal are too soft to be mounted or finish into any form of jewelry, therefore jeweler mix nickel, zinc and copper into the pure metal to make it little hard enabling to give the desired shape to the metal. Zinc and copper do not harm the skin but skin is always sensitive to nickel. People complaining wearing jewelry are allergic to nickel and not with the jewelry.

Gold itself is reactive and causes allergy but, mostly nickel is the main reason. Gold of any karat would contain nickel like 14K, 18K etc. Less the karat value more shall be the nickel content and so more problems therefore, it is always better to wear high karat gold jewelry. Some people have very sensitive skin thus, as soon as the skin comes in direct contact with nickel it results in allergy. In the same way silver is also mixed with nickel and copper to attain hardness and durability required to make the jewelry items.

Nickel is also used in jewelry made up platinum and white gold. Metal used in artificial or costume jewelry contains nickel too. Moreover, another reason is platinum and white gold are hardened by palladium that do not cause any allergies. Palladium is more expensive than nickel. Nickel is commonly used for gold and silver jewelry as it costs less, gives better hardness and has strong lustrous effect.

The allergy is caused when the skin comes in contact with the metal like white gold, yellow gold, silver, platinum consisting nickel. Through the pierced nose or ear hole, nickel penetrates inside the bloodstream of the body where the cells react in opposition to the presence of nickel. Once the cells react negatively, every time the skin comes in contact with the jewelry it causes the skin to erupt. As a result body develops allergy. This entire process may happen within few months or even take couple of years. It is different for all.

Another reason for the allergy is sweat. During the sunny days, when jewelry item is worn for a longer duration, skin perspires under the jewelry item, this perspiration comes in the contact with the jewelry metal, dissolves the nickel present in the metal and form nickel salts. Salt reacts with the skin and leads to the allergy. Women suffer more with this allergy than men. The symptoms of these allergies are

Bleeding.
Pierced hole in ear or nose swells and yellow colored liquid known as pus comes out.
There is a constant itching and burning sensation around the area where the skin comes in direct contact with the jewelry item. For example Gold chain in the neck, earrings in the ear etc.
Few people get a blue colored patch in their finger, which is visible after the ring is removed. And also skin discoloration takes place.
Rashes or patchy red marks appear on the skin under the jewelry.

Precautions and Care:

It is a common practice to pierce nose and ears with a very thin gold wire. As the skin is tender and sensitive, it gets exposed to nickel present in gold and leads to allergy. In order to avoid the pain caused due to metal allergy, stainless steel needle must be used for piercing. And till the time entire healing of the pierced area takes place, only stainless steel jewelry should be worn. Stainless steel also contains nickel but as it is bound tightly, it seldom comes in direct contact with the skin.

Left over traces of soap and water under the jewelry breaks the protective shield of the skin and allows nickel to come into direct contact with the skin. Similarly, sweat of the body is responsible for the jewelry allergies. Earrings and finger rings are most likely to hold water after the bath. This is the reason why; some people experience awful smell in the earrings once it is removed from the ear. Being extra cautious while taking bath or washing hands can avoid these problems. Always ensure to wipe off the soap and water from the body fully.

While doing the household work, hands are washed countless times in a day. It is very obvious that detergent or other cleansing products and water are left under the ring and causes allergy. Mostly every person wears minimum one finger ring. To protect the fingers from the allergies, apply several coats of clear or transparent nail polish at the back of the ring. In same way nail polish can be applied to other jewelry items too. The problem of allergies will be solved.

Few other precautions that can be taken to avoid allergy are apply talcum powder before wearing the jewelry to prevent the moisture. Do not wear tight earrings or rings or chains, leave little space so that air passes through it. Change the jewelry items more often. Keep the jewelry clean and dry.

People who are highly sensitive to nickel should get their jewelry lacquered, coated or plated with palladium to protect the direct contact of nickel with the bare skin. Dermatologists offer some medical treatments to cure the allergy. These treatments are effective only for short term. After some time irrespective of the treatment the allergy reappears.

Jewelry enhances the beauty and makes the wearer more charming. Unfortunately, few people have to bear pain of becoming beautiful as they suffer from the allergy. But, with these precautions and care the allergy can be avoided and they can continue to look good by wearing the fascinating jewelry items.
