It's Christmas!

Ho, Ho,
Merry Christmas, its been a while!

There's change in the air here at freeloader.com. We started the year with a bang and introduced new features throughout the spring, unfortunately we got a bit lost in the winter of 2007 - projects delays and deadlines took their toll on the team and now the year is almost at an end.

But lessons have been learned. 2008 will see the introduction of tons of cool new functionality and I suspect a few surprises along the way too. I'll keep you informed with a monthly update and a catchup of all our new games. Don't forget to keep checking freeloader over the Christmas holidays too as we have loads of new releases scheduled for you!

All that's left to say for 2007 is have a very merry Christmas and keep it freeloader in 08!

You may of noticed that we're releasing tons of games at the moment; fun for you lots of work for us ;)

Its all good though.

There's a few new features on the site that you may of noticed, top being a keyword search... some may say long overdue. With all the new features that we're rolling our next year, (see my last post), everybody's busy with their specific projects and we'd kinda forgotten that most basic function. Our bad!

Anyway I think the search we've ended up with is cool, its a synch to find my fav games now, word is that your be able to search from the home page real soon, and head boffin tells me that it will be a boolean search real soon too.

Freeloader's move

I'm feeling guilty for not posting for a while, sorry but this month has been all about moving office. It would seem that relocating took longer than we thought it would!

Our move is almost complete and we're settling into our new home, we'd outgrown the old place and needed some new digs. The new place is cool, just down the road from our office.

Things in freeloader land are still a bit hectic - dev servers not setup, stuff to unpack and mess to tidy up, plus a new desk to get used to. I swear clearing my old desk was like journey through time I found things I thought I'd lost years back and half a ton of paper clips...?

In between moving boxes we've been trying to work, honest, we've been discussing and prototyping our new collaborative features, lots and lots. We want to get the right and give you guys something cool to play with.

We just don't want our competitors to know exactly what we up to... yet but are still on track to roll out the first new elements before the end of this year, so not long to wait! One feature I can share with you is a new aspect of the site that lets you share tips and comments regarding our games... hardly ground breaking and some would argue well overdue, but we're creating something more compelling than the usual 'review this game', fodder.

We want the our new 'comment' aspect of freeloader to be a place where users share tips on all our games. We not trying to produce a forum as such, more a collaborative help area. To that end we've created a Digg like comment area, where users are self regulated with the power to mark comments in terms of usefulness, those falling below a certain threshold being dismissed altogether.

Currently our designers are playing with different was of letting users view and post comments and testing their ideas within the office. This feature will be ready soon and probably be released before our new collaborative stuff goes live. As always as soon as we upload anything you'll hear about it here first.

On to the games, if you havent played V-Power Diesel Challenge yet why not? Its an exellent game, though you'll need a decent PC to get the most out of it, give it a try tho!

AGGGGGHHHHHhhhhh!

What a nightmare week its been!

Head boffin was rudely awakened early last Saturday with the news that one of our ads was making the site unusable. Simply put the problem was a symptom of an ad house's servers not being able to cope with the traffic it was trying to serve.

Now you would of thought the company in question would notice and put things right, these people aren't short of a couple of quid. Despite our best efforts we've had no luck on that front and reports from you guys hint that this problem is occurring more and more often.

The result is freeloader.com suffers the site is just not as responsive as we'd like, things look bad and its not our fault. Rather than ignore the issue or write a temporary hack, head boffin took the decision last Saturday morning to rework the way we serve ads - fun weekend, but that's why he's paid the bug bucks i guess ;)

I got to see what he did late last Sunday evening after he'd finished up, its all cool stuff. For a kick off freeloader's main menu no longer waits for a page to load before it becomes active - It makes the site feel so much snappier, the fading sections on the features bar to the right of a page are a nice touch too.

The main benefit is that any advert displayed by a page isn't loaded until the reset of the freeloader page has fully loaded and become active - meaning you no longer have to wait for all the blasted ads to load before you can use a page's features!

Hopefully all this will mean you enjoy a much more responsive freeloader.

So there we were on Monday happily showing off the sites improvements and going about our business when the support guys noticed a common thread to the emails they we're receiving, along the lines of; 'I've paid for a subscription but can't login, what gives, you guys suck, I'm gonna report you!', you get the idea.

If there was a big red button in the office someone would of pushed it! Turns out our payment system was happily charging users for subscriptions it wasn't setting up correctly - hence users weren't receiving their login details.

Late Wednesday the bug was found and patched, (a recent upgrade had broken some old legacy code), users refunded, humble pie eaten and massive apologies given to all... Calm in the freeloader office was once again restored... For about 3-4 hours.

At 1:40AM on Thursday morning our Database decided enough was enough and proceeded to die, taking with it a days worth of data - new accounts, logs etc, etc. Faulty hard-drives were the cause, (a bust raid rank controller for those that care). Bleary eyed engineers we called out at 2AM and fixed the problem in the small hours. We'd lost a good mornings worth of data but backups were used to restore as much info as we could, apologies to all affected users!

It could of been a whole lot worst, we're all just one database crash away from disaster!

All in all a fun packed week, NOT, ow did I mention that we're also trying to pack-up and move into a new office whist all this is going on? Thank God It's Friday, lets play some games!

New Home Page Finally Hits The Streets!

The new freeloader.com home page is live, so stop reading this and go check it out!

If you find any bugs, please, please do contact us via the site as we really appreciate the feedback.

We've been plugging tons of new stuff into freeloader.com for the first 6 months of 2007, our next big, big job is to introduce a whole new set of collaborative functions and features before the end of the year.

We've set ourselves some real big goals for the collaborative update and don't expect to have much to show until the winter but i promise you some real exciting changes to the site when we do start to roll out the new features.

I'll keep you up-to-date with progress and as soon as we release anything your obviously read about it here first.

Home Page Update... Delayed.

I really, really, really wanted to hold of with this posting until the new freeloader home page was ready, but I had a chat with the boffins on friday and the deadline seems to of slipped :(

Some of the bugs relating to old browsers have been causing some real headaches, they'd like me to tell all you folks out there using IE6 to, 'upgrade already' ;)

We decided at the beginning of the year to stop trying to support IE5 and older browsers it was just becoming too much of a headache - we were testing with so many different versions of different browsers it was madness - IE5 on a Mac, yuck, yuck, yuck! Anyone with a geriatric browser can of course view freeloader.com, we try to make the site usable in all conditions, we just cant guarantee the user experience.

The new generation of browsers, (Safari 2+, Firefox 1+, IE 7+ etc), allow the boffins to do all kinds of cool stuff using a common'ish development environment. Problem is there are an awful lot of peps using IE6 to view freeloader.com.

IE6 is a capable browser just not particular compliant with modern standards relating to web development, meaing a couple of lines of code that confirms to standards and works perfectly within most browsers may need heavy modification just to get it to play with IE6.

There's a growing number of 3rd party libraries available that try to solve this very problem and ease development, (Prototype, Google Web Toolkit, JQuery etc, etc), and very cool they are indeed but there's nothing like growing your own if you can.

Apparently the boffins had a look at what was available, 'off the shelf' and decided to make their own - it's not as mad as it sounds, they've developed a light weight library to a very specific set of requirements that they can slot into all our sites and build upon - expect a freeloader UI library soon ;)

Forgive me, I'm off on a techie tangent - the promised new home page. It will be ready ..late this week, early next.. along with a few other accessibility updates and standard compliancy fixes, got to tell you we've been using the new version in the office for a week now and it's great, worth the wait, promise.

For now your just have to content yourselves with a ton of lovely new games, sucks eh ;)

GUI Improvements

My inbox is currently full to busting, it seems that everyone wants something tested at the moment! LEAVE ME ALONE!

Just enough time to let you know that the freeloader GUI update named ‘Stella’ - the boffins like to give each big update a codename, geeks - was posted over the weekend, seen it yet I think it’s really improved things. There are tons of visible tweaks in there to aid usability, behind the scenes I’m told this was a major update.

Apologies to IE users apparently the sites layout went a bit mental during the upgrade process late last week – normal service now resumed :)

Remember a couple of weeks ago I was waffling on about home page improvements, (see AJAX home page), just to wet your appetite here’s some screen shots of two new elements your be seeing and using real soon.

Paper Pilot and Jelly Jumper

Sorry for not posting last week, I was seconded to the LEGO PC Games team, (legopcgames.com), testing a site update and Vista patches we’re finishing off for LEGO’s games.

It seems the freeloader boffins have been busy in my absence and are demanding some attention - I’ve a heavily modified version of the site to test at the end of this week. Gremlins permitting you should get your hands on it soon after.

I got head boffin to fill us in on the changes;

‘This update spiralled out of all control, it was meant to be finished early last month, we only intended to clean up some old code and standardise some GUI elements but once we got started we couldn’t stop tinkering.’

‘In the end we called a stop to the madness and got the core tasks finished. What remains unfinished we’ll release quietly over the end of May.’

‘I’m afraid most changes relate to our backend so don’t expect to see many website modifications aside from a re-designed toolbar.’

‘Now the backend spring clean is more-or-less done the priority for the coming months is to get back to working on new front end functionality!’

He’s fibbing slightly there, regular users of freeloader.com will notice loads of subtitle changes that make our pages easier to use than ever before.

A history of freeloader

It suddenly occurred to me that I might be preaching to the unconverted! Rudely I’ve never given a history of the gaming web site known as freeloader.com.

So make yourself a cup of tea, grab a biscuit and let me share with you what I know about how my employee came to exist.

Once upon-a-time a couple of people got together and thought that selling advertising around a web site could generate enough revenue to give away the latest retail games for free.

They went to the stock market, where some seemingly nice people in suits told them that they could raise a huge pile of money for their idea. Seeing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow the deal was done.

Unfortunately the early freeloaders weren’t too clever, once the lunatics had returned to the asylum it became crystal clear that the orignal business model made as much sense as a McDonald’s salad.

By the time the reality had set in the money was spent and freeloader was on a downward spiral leading to its temporary closure. Revenues were good but the running costs were obscene due to inept management.

As ‘luck’ would have it another group of equally clueless people in suits were in the market for a popular web site and happily picked up freeloader for a couple of quid.

Cleverly they reassembled the core group of people that had run and developed freeloader on a daily basis –ridding the company of its chaff and cutting costs.

Unfortunately that was where the cleverness stopped. Freeloader needed some love and a new direction at that stage but its new owners just wanted to milk the cash cow dry.

It quickly became clear that freeloaders reprieve was only temporary and its days were once again numbered.

Late one afternoon in a quiet meeting room freeloaders now illustrious leader, its head boffin and its top sales woman got together and hatched a plan to take over the company and rebuild it from scratch.

Its then owners were in all kinds of trouble and only too eager to sell the family silver. A fee was agreed and the 3 Amigos took ownership and control.

Apparently what followed were some tough years. Working silly hours in a small office, dealing with shady charters to get enough money to pay the rent.

Seeing the prospect of a born again freeloader the men in suits tried more that once to grab ownership by stealth, but the 3 managed to keep a step ahead, the site was redeveloped and the business rebuilt.

From the comfort of my chair I can tell you it looks worth the trouble and strife to me. I joined after the dark times, in the two years I’ve been at Freeloader I’ve only seen it grow from strength to strength and doesn’t show any sign of slowing.

Freeloaders not a huge company, there’s just over 10 core staff alongside a big network of freelancers who we call on daily. The company used to be based in London, England but just before I joined relocated to Brighton.

About two thirds of us work on the site on a daily basis - updating content looking after servers selling advertising and supporting users. The other half - the boffins - develop future aspects of the site, build games and other portals like LEGO PC Games.

Based close to the seafront our office is as fun and relaxed as any place I’ve ever worked. Everybody has clear roles but as long as you do your job well you’re left alone to come up with new projects and ideas of your own. It’s definitely not the normal 9-5 :)

That’s freeloader’s history in a nutshell, an interesting tale that I’m sure won’t end here. Thanks to the 3 Amigos for sitting down with me and imparting the tale.

I’m currently mourning the loss of the Easter holiday… Sitting on Brighton beach in the sun not touching a keyboard for 4 days, bliss :)

Don’t get me wrong work’s way cool but too much time in front of a monitor isn’t good for anyone.

But how can I be sad I’m on the home page! Official recognition of my devotion to the flag ;) Open the ‘Quick Links’ tab within the main toolbar to the right of a page of freeloader.com, see it? ‘Freeloader Blog’, direct link to yours truly. Check it out.

This does of course mean I have to make this page at least a little interesting, no pressure then. But my boss has given me a direct link to the boffins and asked them to notify me of new site features and updates well in time so I can give you folks a preview.

To that end I had a real brief meeting with chief boffin this morning, well in reality I was clutching my note pad annoying him in the AV room whilst he was trying to play UEFA on the 360, made me real popular.

Using my feminine charm and a blatant bit of flirting I did manage to get the following info tho – there will be 3 more big updates to freeloader before the autumn.

The first is due real soon, (they had hoped to have it finished by now but there have been problems), its not something you or I will notice, its to do with web accessibility and removing the last few remaining ‘tables’ freeloader uses in relation to its layout code and replacing with ‘divs’.

Apparently that’s quite a challenge due to freeloaders fluid layout and the way our editors can create a page with an arbitrary number of elements… Following that, good cos I had no idea what he meant, he kept waffling on about ‘vertical alignment’, negating CSS hacks, IE6 and complex floating layout, I was struggling to keep my eyes open at that point ;)

There’s exciting stuff tho promise! There’s a new AJAX home page that he showed me that looked so cool, (apparently the AJAX aspect means that the homepage updates in real time in front of your eyes), using this tech there’s a new section that lets you browse the 5 latest games within the home page and you’ll be able to scroll the charts displayed at the bottom of the home page to display the top 10 entries.

The version I saw was still early code but apparently it’s not far off and the next priority.

The third and final update due late summer, early autumn is a real biggie. The aim is to make the site a more collaborative experience – I promise more info and screen shots real soon.

At present tho the dev team is celebrating the release of their new code today, well over 250 individual changes to the site I’m told, check out the new 'view preferences', they rock.

New freeloader.com features, Ladbrokes Challenge and Wonderjock

Just been talking to the boffins and managed to get a screenshot showing cool new features coming to freeloader early next week.

Currently you can sort freeloader games you view by age, popularity and title – the games themselves are displayed in a list.

Starting from next week you'll be able to store a preference and sort competitions, wallpapers and screensavers by age, popularity and title too and scroll through all elements using the same toolbar.

There’s more - your also be able to display the elements your viewing in a grid not just a list, (see the screen shot below).

These global view and sort preferences are all configurable within your freeloader preferences as well as on the game, competition and web toys pages too. Nice eh, these are features your hopefully use to customise freeloader pages.

There’s slight graphical tweaks too, the freeloader login bar and areas of the site highlighting users eligibility to a game have had a touch-up, making them clearer to all.

Hopefully the boffins will share more screen shots with me in the coming months as this really is just the beginning, with of tons and tons of new stuff coming to the site in the summer.

Late with last weeks post!! Sorry, I have an excuse, I just got an AppleTV at home and have spent the last few nights discovering its delights!

There was of course another rather important release last week... The PS3, did you get one?

Have to say, apart from the fanboys, the reaction in the office has generally been that it just isn't worth the extra $. Once the curiosity of the new shiny black box in our AV room has passed, the 360 and its massive pile of games remains the office fav. Time will tell but for now I'm managing to avoid that 400 quid dent to my bank balance!

Another busy week here at freeloader HQ, the boffins are getting real excited about all our new features, just wish they’d let me seen em. One cool new feature was released last week tho, it allows users to upload their games to freeloader for us to publish, check it out here. Last weeks game is a gem 'Jonnys', already number 4 in our charts check it out below. CU.

Shiny new servers.... Turtle Power!

Got time for a quick posting, with the latest office happenings – freeloader had a massive speed boost today, the boffins upgraded and added some more servers to our rack …apparently… anyway things do seem to be whizzing along now. We were suffering a bit last week, a big increase in traffic was making our pages slow to load… mustn’t complain about an increase in traffic!

The Gaming News feeds got fixed too, everything came alive again this morning after a few tweaks, busy boffins ;)

We also just put a new game live ‘Turtle Power’, blast from the past there eh! Anyway check it out. CU!

Just ready to leave the office on Friday evening and someone spotted a problem with our Gaming News feeds :(

A pain, I like to catch up with the headlines on the way to the pub on Friday using me mob and freeloader mobile... Sad but true! Hopefully we'll be back to normal on Monday.

Was pulled into a meeting room last Tuesday and given a glimpse of the new features coming to feeloader.com over the next couple of months, tons of cool new functionality all based around sharing your freeloading! Cryptic i know but more here soon I promise!
