I cant believe its been 15 years since I was in 8th grade and Kurt killed himself. I'll remember the day perfectly until the day I die. I cracked my head open that day and then went to my friends house after school and saw the headlines on MTV on the bottom of the screen. It was a fucked up day needless to say. It is weird that I kept all my newspaper clippings from that time, kinda cool and creepy at the same time.

I am only listening to Nirvana today. RIP

So after a LONG and crazy off season, spring training has started once again. Although the Padres are not expected to do much I am still stoked that Baseball is back. Some thoughts about this off season/upcoming season:

I SUPPORT:
- Peavy is still a Padre. Def cool as shit. I told many people that I'll believe it when I see it in regards to him being traded. Him and CY can potentially dangerous this season.

- Ken Griffey Jr being on the M's again, how can you not support this! I predict a 30 homerun season, knock in 85 RBIs, and a .280 average with a decent OB%. I also see him coming back the following season to play in Seattle again.

- New ownership beginning to take place in San Diego. Sandy Alderson making plans to leave also. Good Riddance mother fucker.

- Padres taking a chance on Prior again, I have faith that he can contribute still.

- Padres getting rid of Matt Bush... Good bye loser.

- Another season of the Gonzalez brother in SD. So rad.

- SD Signing Eckstein and Floyd. This can not hurt the team whatsoever. I believe SD has a great balance of veteran leaders and youth right now to lay the foundation for a team that can surprise some people. Re-signing Hairston and Giles was a great idea also...although some may debate the $ spent on Giles. The dude is worth so much more than that due to his on base percentage alone. People need to stop bitching.

- The A's signing Holiday and Giambi is fully supported. Get Holiday out of the NL west and over to my fav AL team. The A's may def turn some heads this season.

- Even though he is on a rival team of the Pads, I am seriously exited to watch Lincecum this season. Watching dudes like him and Peavy gets me so stoked.

-Dontrelle Willis coming back from his terrible season last season, def one of my fav dudes in baseball. Last season was such a downer. Supposedly he is ready to roll and very healthy

DO NOT SUPPORT
- Trevor Hoffman leaving the Padres. I seriously almost cried. I still hold out hope that he will finish with SD. Towers said he would like it to happen also so who knows?

- A-ROD and steroids....weak. I actually wish the other 103 people on the list names would get leaked also. In any case once again baseball takes a black eye to this shit.

- All the media coverage on A-Rod and Manny everyday. Jesus Christ, I cant handle it anymore.

-John Smoltz leaving Atlanta to go to Boston. WTF?

- The Angels letting Garrett Anderson go. I understand why but still, what the fuck? I am not stoked to see him in a diff uniform (ecsp the Braves).

I can go on and on but hey, I will shut up.

I found this online: Dj Quik revealed in an interview with Loud.com that Dr. Dre has recorded around 400 songs for the album, and he himself had heard about 60 of them. He also revealed that Dre has been getting piano lessons from Burt Bacharach and has been reinterpreting "symphony stuff" by Frederic Chopin for Detox.

Sounds fucking incredible, I think the 7 year wait will be worth it. Im saying record of 2009 already without a doubt.

This article is on the front page of the MLB page on espn.com today. It is my childhood all over again. I am mainly posting it on my blog so I can look back at it at some point and hopefully go "Man have things got a lot better since then for the Padres." Then again, I live in a fantasy world 99% of the time so who knows when the hell that will be.

Everything went downhill in a hurry in San Diego

Sometimes, Kevin Towers, the longtime general manager of the San Diego Padres, catches himself thinking about the most recent important game his team played and wondering: What if?

What if the Padres had been able to close out the Colorado Rockies in the National League wild-card play-in game at the end of the 2007 season? What if the Padres -- and not the streaking Rockies -- had moved on to meet the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL Division Series? What if the Padres had ridden the momentum of that 163rd game deep into the postseason, perhaps all the way to the World Series?

Would things somehow be different now?

All Towers knows is this: It's been all downhill for the franchise since then.

"That's when it all started," Towers said. "Nothing really good has happened since then. We might be in a completely different situation now than where we're at. There haven't been many bright spots since."

Towers is being diplomatic. Like a plummeting stock price, the Padres have been in free fall. The Padres lost 99 games this past season and finished last in arguably the worst division in baseball, the National League West. But it wasn't just about where the Padres finished, it also was about how they got there.

"I've had less-talented clubs than this," Towers said. "But everything went wrong. We just didn't perform well on the field. I don't think we had more than a week or 10 days where we played well. That [four-game] sweep of the Mets [in June] was probably the highlight of our season."

The Padres had to contend with injuries. Shortstop Khalil Greene punched out an equipment locker and broke his hand. Second baseman Tadahito Iguchi somehow separated his shoulder while trying to avoid being hit by a ball on the base paths. And pitcher Chris Young and catcher Josh Bard were injured by the same player in the same inning during a game in May. National League MVP Albert Pujols first hit a line drive off Young's face, breaking his nose. Later in the inning, Pujols collided with Bard at the plate, spraining the catcher's ankle.

It was that kind of season.

If the Padres had won that play-in game with the Rockies -- and remember, they took the lead after scoring two runs in the top of the 13th, only to have the Rockies rally for three of their own in the bottom of the inning -- they would have made three straight playoff appearances, the best stretch in franchise history.

They narrowly avoided a 100-loss season, can't afford to re-sign the second-most popular player in franchise history (Trevor Hoffman) and have been forced into shopping staff ace Jake Peavy.

Is this all a bad dream?

"It's very, very frustrating," Towers conceded.

And thanks to matters beyond Towers' control, things could worsen before they improve. The Padres are bracing for a significant drop-off in attendance in 2009, thanks in equal parts to the economic downturn and their dismal performance this past season.

In 2007, the Padres drew 2.8 million visitors to Petco Park. Last year, that figure dipped to 2.4 million. It would surprise few if the Padres were to draw less than 2 million in attendance next season.

Then there is the soap opera surrounding the team's ownership. Owner John Moores, one of baseball commissioner Bud Selig's closest allies, is in the throes of a nasty divorce from his wife, Becky, and custody of the franchise -- like with a child -- is at stake.

To cut costs, Moores has ordered a slashing of the payroll. Hoffman, baseball's all-time saves leader and the face of the franchise, was angered when the Padres pulled back their $4 million offer for next year. He expects to finish his career elsewhere. Towers has been openly soliciting offers for Peavy.

The payroll, which was $73 million for the 2008 season, is likely to be sliced nearly in half for the 2009 season, forcing Towers' hand.

"It's kind of difficult to have one player eat up a quarter of your payroll," Towers said. "We lost 99 games with Jake, and we're not going to get better by keeping him and his salary."

Although talks with Atlanta and the Cubs have been on-again, off-again, the hope is that Towers can land three or four low-cost, high-ceiling players and begin the team's rebuilding. There's precedent: Before the 2006 season, he swapped pitchers Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka to Texas and got Young and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in return.

But beyond the payroll limits in place, there are constraints as Towers goes about the task of reshaping the Padres. Special assistant Paul DePodesta, the former Los Angeles Dodgers GM, reports not to Towers but directly to CEO Sandy Alderson and must sign off on player moves.

"It's a mess," an industry executive said about the situation. "That whole organization is totally dysfunctional."

It hasn't helped that the Padres haven't drafted well. Matt Bush, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 draft, was a bust at shortstop before being converted to pitcher, then underwent Tommy John surgery. Pitching prospect Cesar Carrillo, San Diego's top pick and the No. 18 overall selection in 2005, also has been derailed by arm problems.

There is some hope that outfielders Chase Headley and Will Venable, as well as other young players, will continue to develop and move the Padres in the direction of respectability.

It helps that the NL West, the division that the Padres had seemed on the verge of dominating just a few short years ago, is home to a few other teams that must share the Padres' blueprint and develop from within, which is to say, at modest cost.

"Other than the Dodgers, it's a winnable division," Towers said. "It really boils down to our young players. For us to have consistent success, we need them to come through."

The rest, Towers understands, is out of his control.

"It's a daunting task that lies in front of us," he said. "But we welcome the challenge. Hopefully, we'll make some good baseball trades and get back to where we want to be. Is it a tough sell? Definitely. But compared to 1993 and 1994, when we had that fire sale, we're in a much better position."

But the Padres are a long, long way from that night 13 months ago at Coors Field when they were three outs away from their third straight playoff spot.

Brian Giles vetoed a possible trade to play for the defending World Series champion Red Sox, choosing to remain with the last-place Padres. Giles discussed his decision Saturday with Union-Tribune staff writer Bill Center.

Q: What kept you here?

A: "I got an opportunity in my last contract to do what was best for me and my family. I gave my word when I signed. I want to fulfill that commitment. Some players might have jumped ship. I'm not that type of a player. I am here for a reason. I want to see it through."

Q: But you possibly turned down at least $2 million extra and a chance at the World Series to remain with the Padres.

A: "I have always played this game to compete as well as have fun. I want to win every day. I'd like to do that here. I don't play baseball because of the money. Money was not a factor."

Q: Do you feel an allegiance to the Padres?

A: "I was born and raised in El Cajon. I grew up a Padres and Chargers fan. During the football season, you'll find me and my family at Charger games. Even when I was back east with Cleveland and the Pirates, I followed the Padres. I'm glad I'm playing for my hometown team. That's very important to me. I think it's special when you've been part of a community your entire life. It's not like I want to be anywhere else."

Q: You are 37, how many more years do you think you'll play?

A: "I have not thought about that. I really want to see how my body feels at the end of this season. I feel close to 100 percent right now. But I had the knee surgery last year. You don't know. But I love playing."

Q: Is it safe to say this has been a tough year?

A: "It's been frustrating for the whole team. These are the same games we're used to playing with different outcomes. So many small things that went our way in the past went against us this year for one reason or another."

Q: Is this the most frustrating season you've had?

A: "I wouldn't say so. Remember, I played more than five seasons in Pittsburgh and we never had one winning season. How many straight losing seasons have the Pirates had (16), that's frustration."

Q: You commented yesterday that you think the Padres could become a contender again sooner than later. How?

A: "It's not my job to say what the club needs to do. But I think this division gives you optimism. It's a very inconsistent division. It's anyone's for the taking the next two or three seasons. You win the division and anything can happen. Look at the Rockies last year. I think if we had two or three different pieces this year, it might have been different. We could get the pieces."

Q: Do you want to finish your career as a Padre?

A: "That goes without saying. But it's a decision not in my hands. Things can change."
