Fashion Group Foundation of Houston Career Day!

On March 10th, Jasmine and I attended a career day sponsored by the Fashion Group Foundation of Houston at the University of Houston Hilton. The career day started with a welcome speech by Jim "Mattress Mac" McIngvale, and then you split into whichever workshops you picked. You could choose between:

Fashion Design/Interior Design
Retail Management
Fashion Marketing/Journalism/Special Events
Fashion Production/Modeling/Fashion Styling
Mapping your career path
Smart Money
Starting Your Own Fashion Business
Teacher Networking

I think that this was geared mostly towards high school students, but any one could attend. The Career Day ended with a presentation by the founder of Charming Charlie, and a fashion show that featured college and high school student's designs.

Jasmine and I picked Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing for our two workshops. (you know we had to stick together!) The Fashion Design Workshop featured Chloe Dao, owner of Lot 8 and Project Runway Season 2 Winner, Eva Prappas, Costume Designer/Fashion Consultant and Susan Fruit, a famed interior designer. The panel discussion was very informative, and I learned a lot as far as staying persistent, and just being grateful for any position you are given.(which we knew from the beginning!) Jasmine and I talked to Chloe Dao after her discussion about future opportunities, and we are hoping and crossing our fingers that something GREAT comes out of this!

Our next workshop was for Fashion Marketing/Journalism which featured a representative from Page Parkes, renaissance girl Dusty Gilbert (founder of Bare Communication), a professor from UH's Merchandising branch, and fashion/beauty writer Joy Sewing. Ms. Sewing couldn't stay for long but she sure did make an impact on the girls in the workshop. She said that she was a journalist first, and loved fashion second. I think that is incredibly important, especially if you are covering for a newspaper like the Houston Chronicle. The panel answered questions about taking our careers to the next level, and addressed our concerns about Houston and whether we should move to LA or NYC.

The thing that I really took away from the workshop is what the UH professor said. She advised us to be a change agent for Houston and to bring the opportunities to ourselves. I think she really inspired us to make a fashion scene really happen for Houston. It is way too easy to think "well Houston is nice, but it doesn't really have anything, as far as FASHION goes." It really made me think about getting out there and letting people know about COUGAR STYLE and what Jasmine and I really want to do. (start a store, fashion advertising/public relations)

We just have to get out there and make it happen!

In these dire economic times, people are looking for fashion that is functional, yet still makes a statement. One trend that I've noticed in fashion is Not So Basic Basics. That means t-shirts with little details, such as ruffles, or buckles. In other words, things that you don't really expect when it comes to everyday items like t-shirts, or jeans.

I was surfing on Net-A-Porter (one of my favorite sites for designer clothes that I can't afford... YET!) and I came across this gorgeous ruffle top from designer Rick Owens. At a staggering $700+, this is not for the frugal ladies. But I would buy this if I could. It serves as a better alternative for your regular, run of the mill American Apparel v-neck. (not that anything is wrong with that. I love a classic white shirt!)

I'm sure this blog has been around for a couple of years, but sometimes amazing things slip through the cracks and you randomly come across them and they change your life. Giovanna Battaglia = my hero

Giovanna Battaglia is amazing. She used to be a model, and now she is a freelance stylist and editor for L'Uomo Vogue. My first encounter with her was on The Sartorialist (a favorite of Jasmine and I's) a couple of years ago and she has such a great sense of style. She knows what works for her and she has such a quirky, yet classic sense of style. I aspire to be like this woman. Now if I could just be 7'0" feet tall like she is. I can't believe I am just getting around to talking about this woman.

Kept an eye on this one, because she will be the new fashion icon of our time... she wears clothes so well, there sexy yet classy at the same time. I would say Jessica is more trendy in the things that she wears, but she somehow makes it her own which ALOT of people can't do... they let the clothes wear them instead of the other way around.

Here at CougarStyle, our main objective is to let people know what other people are wearing. We also occassionally include influences, designers we are loving at the moment, and any other fashion news that we see fit.

Well, with the holidays around (whichever one you celebrate...), everyone should start thinking about what gifts they want. Giving someone a list, complete with the websites/store locations to purchase them can help save gas, time, and effort. So just in case you guys wanted to get ME something (jk... unless you're gonna do it!), here are my picks for Christmas 08!

I smelled this as I was passing one of those perfume ladies. I never shy away from someone trying to spray something on me. (that sounded kind of weird... PERFUME, people!) This has been dubbed by some magazines as a new "classic" and it smells really good. Ahhh.

I really want a good blazer, and so far the only ones that I think would look good on me, are blazers made the Olsens. At CougarStyle, we LOVE the Olsens, and from the looks of that blazer (and their other clothes), its not hard to see why!

This is a great business attire outfit, the navy blue top and payne's grey skirt compliment each other well.

Sifting through the thousands of images from the various Fashion Weeks can get a little daunting, so CougarStyle is going through the different designer shows and highlighting designers, new and old and updating you on the 2009 Spring trends.

I chose to highlight Carlos Miele, and Bryan Reyes. Both are relatively new to the fashion scene (as in... they are just establishing their voices when it comes to their own designs) and have gorgeous, wearable designs.

Even though fall just got here, I'm pretty much ready to spring forward. (get it?!)

Edit: (Vanessa's opinion) I love this outfit as well! Good choice Jasmine... but I'll have to disagree. I don't think wearing a tank with a mini like this is hoochie. You can wear a loose, blousy tank, and it won't look hoochie at all. If you top it off with a cardigan, it'll look even classier.

Style Icon: Lauren Conrad

You all know Lauren "LC" Conrad from Laguna Beach and The Hillz. But I mostly like her for her cool and classic style. Almost everything that Lauren wears, I would love to wear!
