Starting from today, I am going to post a number of tutorials on the new search interface from Ovid known as "Ovid SP". In this first tutorial I am going to focus on the new features of Ovid SP compared with the current Ovid search interface. Ovid SP is scheduled to replace the current Ovid search interface soon.

Update (Feb 04, 2008): Ovid has switched from Ovid Gateway to Ovid SP today and has renamed the "Ovid Syntax" tab to "Advanced Ovid Search", which is also now the default tab.

Using Interlibrary Loan

If a book or a journal article you are looking for is not available at Yale, you can always request it from another library via our free interlibrary loan service. Just remember that there are faster ways to get the item you want: for books, try Borrow Direct first, and for journal articles, try requesting it via Yale Links first. If those do not work for you, this tutorial is for you. I will show you how to request books and journal articles by manually filling out our interlibrary forms. One question we get asked a lot is: "where does Quosa store the articles?" People want to know this for a variety of reasons, so I am going to show you how to find the Quosa data folder and how you can use that folder to back up and restore all your Quosa data.

Transferring Quosa Folders Between Two Computers

In my first Quosa tutorial, I mentioned that our license allows you to install Quosa on two computers. For example, you might have an office computer and a home computer. If you use Quosa to do research on both computers, you will probably need to constantly transfer data (downloaded articles and their metadata) back and forth between the two computers. In this tutorial, I am going to show you how to transfer all data in a specific Quosa folder to another computer.

And more importantly, you will not only have the citations of the new articles, but also have their full text. In this tutorial, I will show you how to configure your searches as alerts in Quosa. I am also going to show you how to use Quosa to manage your Ovid alerts.

Importing Existing PDF Collection to Quosa

If you already have a collection of full text articles in PDF, you can import them into Quosa, too. This will not only help you consolidate your collection, but also make your PDFs immensely more searchable as Quosa indexes your PDFs word for word. You can also import your own files, such as your Microsoft Word documents, your PowerPoint presentations into Quosa, too.
