Tattoos no longer hindrance to donating blood

SAN JUAN COUNTY — People who recently got a tattoo no longer have to wait a year to donate blood in New Mexico.

Would-be donors previously had to wait one year from the date of receiving their tattoo to give blood. As of Monday, people can donate as soon as their tattoo heals, which typically takes less than two weeks.

The amendment was mandated by the Food and Drug Administration. San Juan County's non-profit community blood provider, United Blood Services, willingly heeded the call.

"The FDA knows how hard it is to get the blood we need as it is, and I think they saw a way to help us out," said Heath Faulkner, manager of United Blood Services in Farmington.

The one-year deferral period was in place because it takes a year to find out if someone contracted

hepatitis while getting their tattoo. New licensing requirements in New Mexico have led to more sanitary practices, such as sterile needles and fresh ink, and the risk of being infected with hepatitis, HIV and other blood-borne diseases has significantly decreased.

Calls to several area tattoo parlors, many of which were not open for business Monday, went unreturned.

Lifting the tattoo ban should result in an increase in the amount of younger people donating blood. Blood drives at high schools and San Juan College are some of the most successful events United Blood Services organizes, but many students knew about the waiting period and were uninterested in donating.

Teenagers can give blood when they turn 17, or with parental consent at 16. They're not eligible to get a tattoo on their own until they turn 18, but can get one at a younger age with a parent's permission.

"With the growing popularity of tattoos, we were deferring more and more donors, most commonly the young adults we want to initiate as lifelong blood donors," said Cindy James, donor recruitment supervisor at United Blood Services.

The new rule goes into effect for people who get a tattoo after Monday. Someone who got a tattoo before the Monday amendment still has to wait a year before they can donate.

"If you had a tattoo on Oct. 26 you'd have to wait a year. If you got one today, then you wouldn't have to wait," James said Monday.

Officials at United Blood Services also screen for other factors, such as a potential donor's recent travel destinations and sexual history.

Words cannot describe the crazy feelings we get here at Music Saves Lives when we see that what we are doing is changing lives. This I Care Update is about sharing at a time of the year that is known for doing just that. Happy Holidays and enjoy this amazing news. Adam Charles from the band Halifax SAVES A LIFE. It took a few days for some great new to sink in before I could send off this I Care Update and share it with you. After briefly speaking to Adam Charles of the band Halifax and hearing that out of the thousands we registered for the bone marrow program he was a match to save someone’s life, I was taken back to the recent news of Casey Calvert of Hawthorne Heights. These two stories are filled with emotion and they both involve hopeful and caring people reaching out. Music Saves Lives sends out their deepest sympathies to Hawthorne Heights, the fans and the families. I was amazed to see all the comments at our MySpace under the photos of Casey with MSL blood donors. I have to say hope comes in two forms: seeing the caring people reach out in times of loss and a single caring person reaching out to save someone’s life. Adam signed up just like the other 7000 that MSL registered this passed year, but he was called by DKMS and was told that he matched someone with a blood cancer. He was also informed that without him, the cancer patient would die. Adam shared with me on the phone, in pure humility, that he was asked to save someone and did. It was just a few days ago that we found out, but he donated at the City of Hope in California on September 4th, 2007. He kept to himself about this and only his family and the band knew. He is very excited to talk to us more about how easy it was. You will hear from Adam and the band Halifax in a future interview very soon. The band is very busy in the studio right now and we can’t wait hear the new album. The one thing that was revealed when speaking with Adam was something that I would have heard from anyone, the feeling that he was able to save a life. That feeling is indescribable to anyone until they reach out and have that feeling for themselves. It’s easy to have. That’s why we’re here. Music Saves Lives gives you the ability to save lives. They are also a part of the Music Saves Lives Digital Donation Tour in January 2008 with 4 other great MSL bands. Run Doris Run, Gillmor, After Midnight Project and Vogue in the Movement. Sherwood has toured a huge amount of dates and shared some great videos from Europe. MSL has known Sherwood from the days that they played parks in Los Alamitos with 10 people watching. Sherwood care a lot about what the music can do to influence you to do good things in life. They have posted many blogs to encourage their fans to be a part of MSL. Bad Religion has exceeded expectations once again with an amazing album and put their mark on a Gibson Guitar for Music Saves Lives. We had four bands be a part of the MSL Gibson Guitar Project: Coheed and Cambria, Meg and Dia, Pennywise and Bad Religion all took part in helping support Music Saves Lives. MSL has to thank Stacy Clark for her dedication to our program. Her fight with a blood disorder when she was just out of high school pressed a passion with her to reach out and always support. Note from Kevin Lyman about the VWT 2007 and Thanks to MSL kids! I am sitting in my living room thinking about what has happened this last summer, and wanted to give you my perspective of the "lucky 13th," addition of the Vans Warped tour. After last summer many people said that the Vans Warped tour was dead and that it was all over. I even wondered if we could remain relevant, and decided with Darryl that we should book a tour as diverse as possible without abandoning what the roots of the tour stood for. When I went public, saying that this years tour might not be for everybody, some people said I was bitching and whining. It might have been perfect timing or being in the right place but after an amazing first day in Pomona I was walking across the parking lot and someone yelled out " hey Kevin, if the warped tour is dead, then I just went to heaven." Whoever said that I owe you a big thanks, it stuck with me all summer. Each day we worked hard to make the show the best we possibly could, and I think it showed. Another amazing thing that sticks with me about this summer was how my crew had a term, "gone to warped tour," this meant that you were going out to see bands and maybe your radio may not work for an hour. I went to "Warped tour," many times this summer and had a lot of fun. Walking from stage to stage and seeing kids at each one, not all waiting for one band but enjoying everything the day had to offer. You could catch Big d walk a few hundred feet and see Killswitch Engage and make a left turn and see a bunch of people going crazy to MC Chris. It brought a smile to my face and will encourage us to work hard on the line-up for next year. Which leads me to next year, please post your ideas I have a lot but truly need your input on who you would like to see, we have already a lot of ideas and will not waste a lot of time before we start working on 08. Lets just say that we had a blast this summer and thank you for coming out and supporting the tour, the kids who helped with the recycling efforts, the fans in Houston, Miami and Cleveland who hung through the storms, and the crew who got this show up each and everyday so we could open doors on time, all the bands and crew that took one of their days off to clean beaches and re-store vegetation in Monterey. In closing, people were asking last week if I was happy the tour was over, honestly I can't say I am. It is nice to be home with the kids, but the pressure is on to bring you a show at least equal to this year's and I am ready to get started. all the best, kevin lyman PS.. Carrie and Xander Denke were married in January, 2002 and were excited to begin a family, having two beautiful children come into their lives. Usually, when a young couple expects children, it is a very happy moment. This was the case for Carrie and Xander, until Ethan was admitted to Tarzan Medical Center in February, 2007 with a distended abdomen and a fever of 103. "Even though our pediatrician suspected it might be a fatal auto-immune disease (HLH – Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis), both he and we hoped this wouldn't be the case," Xander said. Those hopes were shattered later that month when Ethan's bone marrow biopsy for HLH came out positive. The bad news didn't stop here. The Hematologist, Dr. Hofstra of CHLA, explained that 80% of HLH cases in children under 1 are genetic. Since Ethan and Keane are identical twins, this would mean that Keane would get sick too.

"I cannot put into words how Carrie and I felt that day – our world shattered from one moment to the next. We found out that Ethan has a deadly illness and that Keane would probably have this rare disease. We were such a happy family," states Xander. Keane's illness manifested itself in April, 2007.

The doctors explained to the parents that the only cure would be a BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT – another person's healthy cells giving Ethan and Keane a second chance at life. The sooner doctors find a match, the better, since then the twins don't have to go through countless rounds of chemotherapy. The search for a donor on the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) started immediately. The parent's prayers were answered when they received the news only a few months after that an almost perfect match (9 out of 10) was found. Then a few weeks later the terrifying news came that the donor was no longer available.

Today, Keane and Ethan have still not found a donor. That's why we ask YOU to help save these two precious lives and the lives of all the other children, who need a bone marrow transplant. Blood cancers, such as leukemia, are the most common disease children in the U.S. die of. For a lot of them there is a cure, but only 20% of those who need a transplant, find a match. A bone marrow test consists of four cheek swabs or drawing a teaspoon of blood to determine the DNA tissue characteristics. The results will be placed, anonymously in the National Marrow Donor Program's (NMDP) registry.

The first day was a sell out and with so many VIP blood donors had a great time it made the first day very special. If you were out at the tour and you had your VIP, I’m sure you had a great time. Some of you at first had some issues on access and by 1 pm we had them all worked out. Many of the smaller backstage areas were non-accessible due to the crew learning the first day. But the VIP access by the buses and media areas was great!! I saw some of you taking pictures with Steven from FuseTV, some with the Matches, I saw Anberlin chatting with many of the VIPs. The list goes on. I need to see some pictures posted. Some of you found out that we were letting you come to the Backstage BBQ… Yes you could have gone. For those that are coming out to the next few shows. Be aware that we have a lot of security training each day. Please stop by our booth and find out all the news for the day before freaking out!! MUSIC SAVES LIVES, the trusted conduit between music, entertainment and important life-saving causes, is teaming up with the world famous Vans Warped Tour, and blood banks across the nation, to rally thousands of concert goers to give blood and sign up for the national bone marrow registry program. During the summer, when school is not in session, many areas in the nation suffer from a low blood supply. A low blood supply can result in postponed surgeries, and can be life threatening in critical trauma situations and to cancer patients after treatments. The American Red Cross and many other blood banks are participating in hope to encourage young blood donors to save as many as three lives by donating just one pint of blood. By reaching out to concertgoers each day of the tour, MUSIC SAVES LIVES ultimately strives to register 4,000 new bone marrow donors. Registration only takes about 10 minutes using a simple and painless cheek swab, used for type matching of possible donors with leukemia patients waiting to be saved. Music Saves Lives and DKMS are part of one of the largest blood drives in the US. The University of Missouri-Columbia and the American Red Cross have teamed up for this 2 day event, April 4th and 5th collecting over 3000 units of blood. The drive is part of the MU's Greek Week, and is themed "All We Need is Blood" based on the hit Beatles song from the 1960's. To add to this amazing life saving event, bone marrow registration brought in over 1100 new registers to the bone marrow donor list today alone, which is by far one of the largest registrations to date for DKMS and Music Saves Lives!

Bands and production staff on the 2007 Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour will be registering for the DKMS Americas bone marrow list to save the lives of leukemia patients. The San Diego date of the tour will be a special one as each one will take a moment out of their crazy day to be a part of history. Music Saves Lives has been hosting a booth on the tour and have registered over 100 donors in only 3 tour dates. Music Saves Lives is on track to have the largest number of donors under the age of 25 to register for the bone marrow program ever in history. Music Saves Lives and the Rockstar Taste of Chaos join up to benefit those with leukemia and other blood diseases. A simple booth on tour will register over 3000 tour goers. Los Angeles, CA / January 3, 2007 -- Music Saves Lives, DKMS Americas, and the Rockstar Taste of Chaos tour fight leukemia by hosting an on-site bone marrow donor registry at every US concert date. Music Saves Lives will reach out to 100+ concertgoers each night of the tour. Registration only takes about 10 minutes and a simple buccal swab of the mouth used for bone marrow type matching of possible donors with leukemia patients waiting to be saved. All donors who register with DKMS Americas also become part of the WMDA (World Marrow Donor Association) and the NMDP (National Marrow Donor Program). You must be in good general health and between the ages of 18 and 55 years old to register on the bone marrow donor lists.
