Help the HIMS Community Learning Center (CLC) paint a brighter future by donating to the YMCA Partner’s With Youth campaign. The HIMS CLC goal is to raise $7,000 so we can continue to provide high quality programs both during the school day and after school. All donations large and small are appreciated. Calling all Basketball players!

Attention all basketball players! Pivot Academy is a new HOST class on Tuesdays beginning February 24. This program deals with two activities; academic tutoring and basketball instruction. Each session will be split half between the two activities. For the academic tutoring, we will aim to boost student’s study habits, organization, and skills. We will also give them a chance to do some homework, if they have questions or concerns.

The second half of each session will be devoted to basketball. We will work with each student on basic skills and fundamentals of basketball. Our aim is to generate excitement about the sport and encourage the students. This session might involve drills, individual games; work on fundamentals, or team games. Sign up today!

Skate Barn Thursdays!

It’s that time of year again for Skate Barn Thursdays with the University YMCA. We will be heading down to Skate Barn West in Renton after school on Thursdays and return to the University YMCA at 6:00 p.m. Free transportation from Eckstein and Hamilton Middle Schools will be provided. The program cost is $50 and includes five two-hour skate sessions (Financial assistance is available). The dates for this session are as follows: Feb 26th, March 5th, March 12th, March 19th and March 26th. The next Next five-week session will start after spring break. Separate registration is required. To sign up either stop by or call the University YMCA at (206) 524-1400. Forms can also be obtained from Mr. Rossman in YMCA room 113. Space is LIMITED so sign up soon!

HOST bus added

Attention Northend HOST Bus Riders – A new after school activity bus route has been added to Hamilton International. Students that reside east of Interstate 5 are now assigned to route 3142. Assigned bus stops have not been changed. The previous route 3141 was simply split in half. Notices during school will be sent to the students assigned to the new route. Riders will also be given additional help during Hawk Out of School Time (HOST). Please contact Mr. Rossman at 206-252-5831 if you have questions.

After school activities, including HOST, will not begin until early October. Students will be given class sign-up information to bring home the last week of September. The sign-up forms and liability forms will be available to download as .pdf files.

Does your kid have a story to tell?

Space is still available in the 826 Writing Project (part of the HOST program). Ms. Smith will take students to 826 Seattle in Greenwood every Tuesday and Thursday after school where kids will have a chance to work on their creative writing skills. Students will return to Hamilton in time to use HOST transportation. Send your kid to room 124 for more information. Strong writing skills are fundamental to future success!

Can You Walk the Walk?

7th Grade Parent Mark Miller thanks you for your enthusiastic response to his email about establishing a HIMS hiking club and wonders - could there be any other parents who want to participate? The HIMS hiking club will be a non-competitive physical activity, with some social opportunity and a little field-trip-type education thrown into the mix. The program will be part of the HOST program. Each week the club will pack (or eat) snacks, then depart from Hamilton on 2-5 mile round-trip walk to a destination of interest, e.g. UW, zoo, SPU. The session may culminate in a weekend event, such as a day hike, if kids are interested and logistics are feasible. Please e-mail Mark or call him at 282-2530 if you would like to participate!

HOST Registrations Begin

HOST is the "Hawks Out of School Time" program which offers students a wide range of activities beginning after school and lasting until 4:15 PM. Snacks are provided. Transportation is available (bus tokens or school bus to some locations). Encourage your kid to take a look and choose a couple of activities. If more students sign up than there are opportunities, participation is determined by lottery. Registration forms will be distributed to students on Wednesday, September 12th. The first day for HOST programs is Monday September 24th. Hamilton PTSA hopes to have the registration forms available on this website by Wednesday September 12.

New Student Lounge is OPEN

Thanks to the Hamilton International Middle School YMCA team - the new student lounge opens its doors on Monday. Your kid can hang with his/her friends, play a board game..."whatever" ...in a supervised environment during the lunch period.

YMCA Mid-Winter Break snowboarding camp

Ms. Amy will be leading the 4th annual snowboarding camp trip to White Pass during mid-winter break (February 19 -23). The cost is $300, which includes lodging, transportation, meals, lift tickets, lessons for beginning snow boarders and lots of fun!!!!! Ms. Amy is accepting $100 deposits to reserve a spot, checks need to be made payable to the YMCA Space is limited, sign up today. We accept skiers too!!! Winter Quarter HOST – Instructors Needed

We are in the planning phase for our winter quarter of HOST and looking for new instructors. We love volunteers but we also have money to pay for staff time and materials. We are looking for instructors to lead the following classes:

1. Key boarding – basic instruction

2. Knitting – for beginners

3. Home work club – I would like to get 3-4 committed volunteers to run this and we can provide training.

We are aiming to have Winter HOST registration forms available and distributed shortly after return to classes in January. The Winter session of HOST will begin Monday, January 22.

HIMS YMCA Community Learning Center News

Have you heard? The YMCA CLC and Hamilton International ASB have teamed up to bring you a new and improved version of the Student Lounge. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays you can hang out, listen to music, and play some of your favorite games with friends. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the Lounge will provide students an opportunity to get help on schoolwork, receive tutoring and focus on academics. Be sure to drop in during lunchtime to see the changes!

Chess Club and YBOYs to start Friday Oct. 27

Many HOST classes are full or have waiting lists, but if you are looking for something fabulous to do there is still room in the following classes: Drama Club, Marimbas, Young Entrepreneurs, Hawk Newspaper, Public Speaking with Ms. Gerlitz's Dad, Improv Acting, Arts & Crafts, Afro Drumming, YBOYS and Girls Soccer Club. You need to turn in both the Schedule and the Liability form to register.

For students who have already turned in their HOST registrations – you can pick-up your HOST class confirmations on Thursday during all 3 lunches. Miss Amy will have a table set up in the lunchroom where you can pick them up.

HOST registrations are due by NEXT Monday, October 9th!

The HOST program (Hawks Out of School Time) will begin the next week on Monday October 16th. Students will receive confirmation of which programs they made it into – and which they have been waitlisted for in middle of next week. For more information please e-mail Ms. Amy or call her at 252-5831.

To register, your student will need to circle the classes s/he is interested in (one per day!) on the Fall Schedule and fill out the Registration Form and get a parent or guardian signature. If the registrations materials didn't come home in the backpack, they are available here.
