Pivot Academy is a new HOST class on Tuesdays beginning February 24. This program deals with two activities; academic tutoring and basketball instruction. Each session will be split half between the two activities. For the academic tutoring, we will aim to boost student’s study habits, organization, and skills. We will also give them a chance to do some homework, if they have questions or concerns.<br /><br />The second half of each session will be devoted to basketball. We will work with each student on basic skills and fundamentals of basketball. Our aim is to generate excitement about the sport and encourage the students. We will be heading down to Skate Barn West in Renton after school on Thursdays and return to the University YMCA at 6:00 p.m. Free transportation from Eckstein and Hamilton Middle Schools will be provided. The program cost is $50 and includes five two-hour skate sessions (Financial assistance is available). The dates for this session are as follows: Feb 26th, March 5th, March 12th, March 19th and March 26th. The next Next five-week session will start after spring break. Students that reside east of Interstate 5 are now assigned to route 3142. Assigned bus stops have not been changed. The previous route 3141 was simply split in half. Notices during school will be sent to the students assigned to the new route. Riders will also be given additional help during Hawk Out of School Time (HOST). The HIMS hiking club will be a non-competitive physical activity, with some social opportunity and a little field-trip-type education thrown into the mix. The program will be part of the HOST program. Each week the club will pack (or eat) snacks, then depart from Hamilton on 2-5 mile round-trip walk to a destination of interest, e.g. UW, zoo, SPU. The session may culminate in a weekend event, such as a day hike, if kids are interested and logistics are feasible.
